>He switched back to using Neil Corlett's PSF/PSF2 engine, which is less legal (it includes a Sony BIOS) and less accurate, but more compatible with the many, many broken rips out there.

https://www.hcs64.com/mboard/forum.php?showthread=39&showpage=206
>by kode54 at 11:32 PM EST on November 18, 2015

>Stick with whichever makes your rips work for now. It's not exactly 100% a Sony BIOS.

>In fact, take a look at mkhebios.* from the ESP or from the HighlyExperimental package. Basically, a selection of pre-compiled replacement modules, some patches against Sony supplied modules, and what you end up with is a transformation.

>Input one PS2 BIOS, currently the North American variety. Input the replacement modules and patches, originally defined on disk, but in this case, defined in a header.

>Output one 512KB module, which contains roughly 100KB of code and data.

>The goal of AOPSF is to play without all that.

>There's another PSF player, too. PsfPlayer, based on the Play! emulator project, which happens to have superior compatibility compared to AOPSF, and is also fully HLE BIOS, with some assembled MIPS code written for the replacements as well.

>Unfortunately, PsfPlayer, and much of Play! itself, is a huge orchestration of C++11 code, with some Boost dependencies as well, and it doesn't even compile with my current choice of Win32 compiler, MSVC 2010 Pro, so there's that as well. Oh yeah, and it only supports a recompiling CPU for now, so it's totally useless for embedded targets, like ARM for foobar2000 Mobile.

More issues of devs not wanting to backwards compat. with old "dumps" in this case rips just because they think they're "broken"

Also devs bitching about new C++11 rather than using their favored ancient compiler of choice

When will they learn that they're doing exactly what we're doing and they're hypocrites for wanting to get rid of "broken" rips? I want them to get rid of their broken compilers.

and also

>muh catering to mobile
>>
>>155137047
C++11 is shit though.
>>
>>155136346
Glad I got a copy of HighlyExperimental before he took it down and replaced it with a choice between AO which plays virtually nothing because no one gives a fuck to rerip the music from every PS1 game again and the shitty Play! core that probably won't play everything because it's Play! and we all know what that's like.
>>
>>155137283
Why? Can it not do everything old vers of C and C++ could do and just adds a bunch of extra crap that you don't have to use?
>>
>>155137047
>More issues of devs not wanting to backwards compat. with old "dumps" in this case rips just because they think they're "broken"

They're broken if they don't function on a player running on real hardware or more accurate emulators. This is no different than the situation with ROM hacks, and the solution is to improve them to work on real world conditions instead of holding back emulation with hacks to make them work.
>>
>Adds decoding support for Sega Dreamcast Sound Format (.DSF/.MINIDSF) files and Sega Saturn Sound Format

Are there any Dreamcast or Saturn game osts that are worth listening to?
>>
>>155137479

It's just a bunch of syntactical sugar that's unnecessary. C99 and C++03 were good enough and would work on every compiler made in the last 15 years.
>>
Which emulator is the one you use the most?
>>
>>155137659
>They're broken if they don't function on a player running on real hardware or more accurate emulators.
Nah.

>This is no different than the situation with ROM hacks, and the solution is to improve them to work on real world conditions instead of holding back emulation with hacks to make them work.
That will never happen because hacks are released and support ends for them; you just leave the legacy core and if the psf doesn't work on the newer core you swap to the older one. you don't just say "sorry but ur rips r old, go dl them all again"

This is like instead of Windows 10 supporting games from say 2001 they just say "sorry, go tell the dev of this defunct game to update it so it works on W10"; it isn't feasible.
>>
>>155138106
>This is like instead of Windows 10 supporting games from say 2001 they just say "sorry, go tell the dev of this defunct game to update it so it works on W10"; it isn't feasible.

That's already happened for games that used deprecated functionality in the Windows API.

Next you are going to complain about 16-bit DOS games not working on modern Windows too.
>>
>>155138480
>That's already happened for games that used deprecated functionality in the Windows API.
Like what games? I have games from 1996 that work on W8.1
>>
>>155137864
can't make a list atm, but yeah especially on saturn
>>
>>155138106
>Nah.

Yes. If a Playstation game were released in 1997 that did not work on a real Playstation, it would have been considered broken because it would not work. It wouldn't magically become non-broken if some hackfest emulator from 5 years later could play it. No one cares if you are inconvenienced by this simple fact.
>>
So this is the accuracy vs hacks debate again
>>
>>155137352
Pretty sure foo_psf is still Highly Experimental
>>
>>155139521
Why did someone say it was based on the Play! core now?
>>
>>155138723
These aren't PS1 games though. They're rips of the audio intended to be played in a music player. If they can be then they aren't broken. The whole point of these rips is to play them, not to autistically update the rips every 5 years like MAME sets
>>
>>155139636
He was saying that there was another PSF player out there that he hasn't used because of the stated reasons regarding its code and lack of interpreter support.

He only offers Highly Experimental and AOPSF as foobar PSF decoder plugins as of this time.
>>

Oh ok. I just wasn't aware there were 3.
>>
>>155139772
>They're rips of the audio intended to be played in a music player. If they can be then they aren't broken

The plugins used to play them were based on inaccurate emulation.

>The whole point of these rips is to play them, not to autistically update the rips every 5 years like MAME sets

Then you should have gotten MP3 rips instead. Emulation is all about progress, not stagnation for some user's convenience.

It makes perfect sense from a code management standpoint. Accuracy improvements from home system emulators apply immediately to arcade systems, and the end users won't even notice if they're using a proper front end.

>It's stupid that they don't support old dumps.
See >>155138723
In MAME this is further compounded by the fact that people actually replace defective ROM chips in old arcade cabs using MAME's dumps, so inaccurate dumps are absolutely inadmissible.
>>
>>155152236
PocketSNES. Yeah, it was originally a SNES emu for the GBA.
>>
>>155152259
>if they're using a proper front end.
MAME has no proper front ends

> inaccurate dumps are absolutely inadmissible.
If it worked 2 years ago and yet suddenly doesn't work now due to some change you made in the code, it ain't an "inaccurate dump," it's your emu that isn't handling it properly.
>>
>>155152784
>MAME has no proper front ends
Nice True Scotsman.

>If it worked 2 years ago and yet suddenly doesn't work now due to some change you made in the code, it ain't an "inaccurate dump,"
Thousands of ZSNES 1.42 patches on romhacking.net say otherwise.
>>
>>155153214
Dumps of real games that ran on real hardware working on real MAME 2 years ago are different from rom hacks that arent real games and never ran on real hardware
>>
>>155152446
>SNES emu for the GBA
jesus fuck
even the psp and dreamcast have trouble emulating that shit
i need a vid. now.
guessing it can emulate smw at 30fps no sound
>>
>>155153849
They work for the same reasons. You can hack together an emulator that sort of works with a partial / corrupt / oversize dump, just like you can hack together a ROM file that only works with a simplified machine model. MAME has hundreds of playable dumps in their catalog that are marked as bad or incomplete.

A lot of times the people writing the code don't even have physical access to the arcade machine. They're huge and prohibitively expensive to transport.
>>
>>155132801

Is playing Bust a Groove for the PSX without the music and game losing sync possible?
>>
>>155154625
If MAME ever uses a workaround to make that game work on a simplified machine model then I propose it must always keep that simplified machine model in its code to support those old dumps that once worked. Either do it right the first time or support the hacky code forever.

Are you telling me that Mamedevs are writing an emulator to emulate a game that they have NEVER played on the REAL HARDWARE? How do they even know what is correct? Are they just going with what "looks" right?
>>
>>155157329
Since when do arcade games come on discs?
>>
>>155157774
Sometimes. It depends on the driver. They have scrapped a lot of 10~15 year old drivers for more accurate ones, which that article seems to insinuate isn't the case. It's not like PCSX2 where they basically acknowledge their code is shit and do nothing to fix it.

>>155157113
Just grab Emuloader or QMC2, MAME from mamedev.org, and get the ROMs (not software list) and Extras from PleasureDome. They're free; you don't need to have any ratio.
>>
>>155158110
The late 80s? LaserDisc was a thing.
>>
>>155158354
Did they really put laserdiscs inside arcade cabs?
>>
>>155158174
>They have scrapped a lot of 10~15 year old drivers for more accurate ones, which that article seems to insinuate isn't the case.
I think the guy being interviewed there is just kind of saying it isn't the rule; they don't go for perfect accuracy. He would probably acknowledge they will scrap inaccurate drivers but it takes some doing to coax people into making the more accurate ones and such. He is clearly an accuracy nut and thus for him MAME is no-go. Only the original will do because it isn't 100% accurate from release.

>>
>>155159190
>>155159919
Yeah, Dragon's Lair is literally a LaserDisc player in an arcade cab. Plus CHD+DIF images, which are hard drives with writes stored in a separate file.

>>155159371
I think they operate on a something is better than nothing principle. Like, Neo Geo and old Atari stuff is easily on par with SNES9x or Genesis GX Plus in terms of accuracy. 40 year old Soviet gambling machines maybe not so much, but nobody else is even willing to try.

I played through Wind Waker just fine on a significantly worse mobile CPU. I think it was an i3-4010U @ 1.70GHz. Just do not enable any bells and whistles beyond the original console, those will put some weight onto a GPU. Half the sob stories about Dolphin performance (in the decently-emulated games at least) seems to begin with some stupid fuck turning everything to max before even seeing if it runs a game NORMALLY. Demanding games like F-Zero GX might still be out of reach, but most stuff should be fine.

I don't know about that. ZSNES has noticably inaccurate sound in every game it plays. If you have a real DSP dump and use LLE DSP in the options, Dolphin's sound can be just as normal. Except with hiccups every time a shader needs to be made :^)

Yep. If your game ran well in Desmume a year ago though, nothing to be concerned about. Otherwise you may be nearly out of luck on PC.

I say nearly because I do remember that back in the eary days where no$gba DS was a thing, people would often use some kind of external 3rd-party software to 'zoom' in on the screen because it had no zooming of its own. No$gba is utter trash and I don't recommend using it, but you could investigate whatever that external software was, or things like it, since it likely wouldn't be limited to use with only no$gba.

I have a problem where every ISO I download is corrupt and will not extract properly. I can download the SAME ISO files from the SAME source (I get my downloads from emuparadise) on a different PC using the SAME internet connection and I know they work properly, but I can not get these same files to download properly on the PC I'm currently using. In other words, the files are legit, but they get messed up somewhere in the downloading process.

How do I get my computer to download the files properly? Should I disable my antivirus during downloads?

I'm running a Windows PC, using Google Chrome as the browser I'm downloading off of (with adblock), with Norton Anti-Virus. I've tried using WinRar, 7-zip, and Express Zip to extract the ISOs, but none of them work.

It's not the rips themselves, it's the downloading process. That's what I'm trying to say.

>>
>>155233585
OK, so I actually went through the source and looked at Wikipedia:

YM2612 has 14-bit resolution internally, which is truncated to 9-bit at output. The default Genesis GX Plus behavior is to dump the 14-bit output directly, which is probably "better" than real hardware. In the same way dumping NES VRAM produces a "better" picture than a real NES.

https://github.com/ekeeke/Genesis-Plus-GX/blob/f49980abede84c3e1e1eae918e1faac5e4b33760/core/sound/ym2612.c#L2109

Quantization enables 9 bit truncation with no output filter, which is going to produce uglier distortion than real hardware.

So yeah, neither one is necessarily more correct than the other. Just choose whatever sounds right.

Nobody said he was responsible for everything bad to ever happen, you are reading too much into it or maybe just being too much emotional once again towards anything being said about SP for some unknown reason.

Truth is he spends his time shitting on other devs (emudevs or others) for random reasons (but in the end its goal is probably just to make himself look as a better coder) and - despite his multiple resolutions - can't help getting involved in drama and creating it constantly.

>When you save, it keeps a number on the side of how many times you have saved
Where does it do this? I can't remember that being present at all, but regardless, it isn't taken into account at any point. You can save exactly as often as you want.

>Considering the nature of the game, I was wary and started to rely on save states more than in game saving
There is nothing that can go wrong. Worst case you fuck up a court room minigame, have to retry and get a worse score at the end of the case. Which just means you get a few less monocoins than if you hadn't fucked up. There's no reason to sweat it.

>It helps because it only saves at several intervals and I don't want to repeat investigations
You can bring up the menu and save at just about any point in the game.

Even if you made, say, a million. A million is not worth jack shit in Beverly Hills. youd be through that money in about a year. LOL, projecting again sad loser? Ultimately you are the sad loser invested in this whole 'emulators CAN make money, nyanyanya', while I just give you a reality check.

If you think Googles terms of policies are not subject to change, I can tell you have never used the Play Store as a developer then. because i continually get requested to re-agree to their newly updated TOS, and if you dont agree within a certain number of days, rhey remove you and your app from the play store. so, honestly, you are just playing in their sandbox and are their slave, they know they can slap you around and you will take it.

also look at the new rules youtube imposed on content creators, youtube being another google company. google does not need some pathetic smelly emudev nerds to make them some ad money, they have enough 'legitimate' developers who can do that for them. and I guess the realization of that makes you even more likely to attack the messenger.

What happened to RetroArch? I got my GPD XD back in January and installed the than latest stable version on it and it was working out of the box like fucking magic.
Sometime during this summer, I switched to the then latest nightly because I needed something, but got stuck in the extracting packages part (which I could bypass enough to play games). However, being annoyed with it, I've decided to delete it (I didn't just overwrote it previously) and install the latest nightly now and it's a mess. Won't recognize Xbox controller option, barely works, going back to RetroArch menu from game disables the controller until I touch close. Went to latest stable and the problems are literally the same.
What do I do now, how do I fix this?
Reason for all of this atm: saving wasn't working properly, got screwed near endgame in Link's Awakening DX. Save state worked, but save file (which I tested to see if worked) reverted back to older one.

Some releases of RA, including the latest "stable", randomly change the save directory back to default sometimes. It seems to come and go depending on the nightly release you're using. Check the directory you keep your ROMs in. The newer save should be there.

Unless you loaded a save state from before you made that save. Then you're fucked.

No, but I thought disabling it was for people with toasters having performance issues. I didn't realize it had an effect on latency.
>>
>>155289131
> there would be fundamental flaws in case of both the PS2 slim and PCSX2
Well, there are. PCSX2 is shit in general, and PS2 slim doesn't have 100% compatibility with the real PS2.

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_games_incompatible_with_PlayStation_2#PlayStation_2_games

I don't think many games actually call the PS1 specific parts on purpose. Jak X Combat Racing is the only one I remember hearing about, and I can't find a source on it now.

PS2 fat is the indisputable benchmark if you're going to build an accurate PS2 emulator though, and that necessarily includes PS1 bits.

Guys, I need a little feedback here.

I've put together a little bartop arcade of my own using a not too old laptop with a busted screed (which i'll remove soon, no need for that shit to exist inside) and now I'm a bit on the fence on what frontend should I use.

So what would you guys recommend? I've tried EmulationStation but it seems the only community this shit is relevant is on raspberry, their forum is flooded with spam and shit. There's HyperSpin too, although I don't know much about this project.

So, anyone can recommend something? Main objectives are CPSII and III, NeoGeo and PS1, with the occasional Snes and Genesis for shits and giggles.

>>
>>155289191
Desktop Composition forces extra latency in anything not running in exclusive fullscreen. Meaning having multimonitor setups and gaming in borderless fullscreen gets hosed. You cannot disable this "feature" in Win8 and Win10.

Anyway one last thing you can do is check on your graphics card's control panel, see if you're doing anything that introduces latency there, AND set the "maximum pre-rendered frames" value as low as you can go for the software. I doubt PCSX2 is asking to bank lots of extra frames but who knows, your GPU might be doing it anyway. There are a couple modern games I had to do this for so that their gameplay could actually become enjoyable, it's getting fucking absurd. Just Cause 3 had like a full quarter-second until I sorted that.
>>
>>155292436
That depends entirely on what CPU your laptop has.
Generally MAME for arcade games unless specified and you could set up Retroarch for other things.

You have less VRAM available for textures. You can see that if MGS used the same resolution all the textures at the top-right would have to be moved elsewhere or removed entirely.

Oh and I forgot to add that obviously a smaller framebuffer results in a faster rendering on the GPU since you have fewer pixels to draw on every frame. Maybe MGS would lag if you increased the resolution on the real console, although that's far from certain (most games seem rather CPU bound from what I've seen, hence why overclocking seems to do wonders with many games). I think the main factor really is the limited size of the VRAM.

HOW THE DEVELOPERS INTENDED IT
>>
I just stumbled upon this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_vlFQpCgyc

At first I thought they had bothered making a real PSX homebrew but it's obviously not PSX graphics, the quality is too good and it makes no sense to have a loading time for a video.

I really triggers my autism when people want to be all retro and shit and just use it as an excuse for making shitty looking stuff without bothering with any of the actual constraints of the real hardware.

Like indie devs who make "retro" graphics but use high resolution displays, infinite number of sprites (that they sometimes even rotate) and no palette restriction. You're not doing "retro" anything, you're just too lazy to make good looking assets.

And that's the end of this rant, you can now go back to shitposting about byuu.

Hello /emugen/
Any pcsxr-pgxp users? I'm loving how the game looks except I need a way to turn out the ugly sprite filtering. It's even worse because stationary sprites will not be filtered but if they are mobile they will. You can see this in the picture.

Oh god, that looks terrible. I believe you have to edit the ini file and set the filter to nearest, I think I read that in an other thread. I don't remember the specifics, sorry.

I don't understand why nearest isn't the default anyway, it's what the real console used.

Trying to run Front Mission 2 in Mednafen with the latest translation patch

Game boots fine and runs fine
The untranslated bin/cue plays the opening FMV audio correctly
The patched bin/cue doesn't play any audio in the FMV

I used the correct patch on the correct version of the game, and the file size and md5 check out. Missing audio is not a feature or a common problem with the patch.

Any idea what's causing the audio to not play? My first guess would've been the cue sheet but I renamed the bin, the cue, and the cue's contents appropriately, and it's a standard single track PS1 disc.

Hi y'all.
Sorry if this is a common Q or if it's been answered somewhere I haven't notice before but, in PCSXR running Resident Evil 2, NA, cinematics have this weird affect on the letterboxing and I'm not sure what causes it. It's no game-breaker, but it is certainly noteworthy when it pops up and I'm just curious.

Also, the horizontal line I'm not certain about. I imagine it's something to do with my rendering dimensions, or my aspect ratio settings but again I'm not sure. If anyone knows the solution or has a suggestion to either of these issues I'd appreciate them if you shared.

that's something that happens to 2D art assets in lots of 3D games when you up the rendering resolution
the game isn't meant to run at a resolution that high so the game doesn't have any instructions to realign the artwork
not just PS1 either, it's pretty much universal across all emulators and even PC ports of console games

as for the bug:
>PCSXR
>>
>>155345207
Yeah I thought the explanation would be something like that. People have suggested PCSXR quite a bit from what I've heard lately. Plus, RE2 doesn't seem to be playable on epsxe for me on the newest v.

It was a CLI program to begin with, so it still behaves that way. It probably could send ERROR to the OSD or something.

I'm not sure what this means. Mouse works fine as far as I can tell with the few cores that use it.

> hilariously complicated update procedure

Downloading cores through the updater is so hard. So is copying retroarch.exe over the old one. So complicated...

> randomly resets or ignores config

This does not happen. I've been using the same config for nearly two years now, it is still around right now. And it's not like you can't set configs as read only or disable the save on exit option to preserve them anyway.

>but its interface is inexcusable dogshit which is only sustained by SP's infinite ability to deflect criticism, no matter how valid.

SP is not an interface expert, nor is Themaister or most of the other devs. An interface expert should step forward and make a better one if it's really that bad. Expecting magic from coders who don't deal with UIs is unreasonable, just like I wouldn't expect a UI coder to make a dynarec.

Most of them take the easy way out and use toolkits. Themaister and other have already rejected that because it is not maintainable to do that for every platform. The current ideas revolve around two things: Nuklear which is an immediate mode toolkit that works every where and something like byuu's Hiro that wraps common UI functions for every platform.

Did you not read what was posted? Making different shit for every platform means way more maintenance work. Generic solutions are the only way to make it work without a huge team supporting it.
>>
>>155350430
>That doesn't explain why every fullscreen MAME frontend rails them in the ass on usability.

They don't because MAME itself is toxic to usability.

WIMP GUI for PC. Current garbage for everything else. Done.

WOW SURE IS A LOT OF WORK MAN.
>>
>>155350994
Yeah, you're clearly not reading since I've already stated two different WIMP GUIs that were in the works...
>>
>>155351153
"In the works" means "This shit ain't never comin' out" with RA. They've been in the works for years.
>>
>>155350862
I don't think I'll ever understand the bitching about MAME in these threads. Is everyone trying to use it without a separate front end or something? With RetroArch?

The Emscripten port was worked on off and on for a couple of years. I don't see how that wouldn't apply here as well.

PGXP on PCSX2 when
>>
>>155351516
I bet due to SP not being the one supporting these GUIs they'll be constantly outdated and broken just like the PSP port in current RA.
>>
>>155351516
They've released more traditional GUI frontends that had about the same level of polish as Emscripten only to let them die on the vine later.

How does Mario 3D World run on CEMU 1.6.0, or whatever is the best version for it?
>>
Why is PCSX2 trying to handle PSX emulation when it can barely do PS2 games correctly?
>>
>>155349892
Are you running it from inside of a zip file like a fucking retard?
>>
>>155352404
read the thread you nigger this has already been explained

This is with PGXP? Why are the ends of the bridge still warped?

You're welcome.

No.

If you're legitimately having issues with it, and it's not from your own stupidity, then go open a bug ticket on the sourceforge page.

Interesting time. Only 3 bumps left and yet on page 10. What will happen to emugen?

You ruined the shining moment. Emugen was to be defeated. All was to be laid waste!

A new thread will need to be made eventually. I'm not gonna let us be outlived by Kawata Shojo or whatever it's called, are you?

Is that gen really still going? The game is years old. What madness.

Friendly reminder that android games will never be preserved

If I was able to post to byuu's twitter, I would say for him to move to another country then.
>>
>>155364008
But then again, that is twitter, and anything can be construed as an insult. Just like Github, which is why these days I have been super quiet about things. Like, I want to say things about the skmp thing and reicast, but realistically, I can't since Github's corporate structure and policies are so "left wing" its crazy. You can literally have your Github account banned for criticism and pissing off some guy for clean room RE (like some dude I know that reverse engineered some middleware devs' file compression library which is used in several AAA games).
>>
>>155364118

Yeah, I was kicked out of the 'reicast team'. He told me - 'I like to have fun, I don't care passionately about Dreamcast emulation, maybe you do, I don't, and I don't like negativity from you' and that was it.
>>
>>155367180
Sounds fare to me. Negative and obsessed people are cancer to emulator projets. You also probably never contributed anything significant or worthwile so there was no loss.
