I think it just might be due to art direction or Bioware's usual ineptitude. There's something off about how everything looks. Perhaps it's because they couldn't decide if they wanted to focus on making everything look good from either an isometric camera angle or a third person one and sort of fucked up both. Inquisition fixed that by focusing on a third person view and looked fine as a result.

Origins is literally Murky Brown: The Game. Even people's teeth are brown. I think my biggest problem are two things, everything looks oddly proportioned and clayish, weapons for example look terrible and not even sharp and secondly that unlike the other games I mentioned which were very crisp and clean Origins isn't. It's a problem particularly present in the levels, the NPCs suffer from the same awkward look as was present in NWN2 but they are at least not blurry. NWN2 is actually the game I would say is closest to it visually, it too was technically more advanced than what came before but managed to look worse somehow.

I only finished it three times. Most of those things you mention don't even have a lot to do with RPGs. The essence of the difference between an RPG and games that are not is the abstraction of actions and skill. The basic question you can ask to find out if a game is an RPG or just inspired by the genre is this: does the game refer to direct player skill or character skill? If it's mostly player skill then it's an action game or whatever, a balance between the two and it's an hybrid like ARPGs such as the Witcher games and finally if it's not twitch or coordination based at all but instead refer to your character skills then it's an RPG.

It's as simple as that, a task resoltion system and abstracted combat means it is an RPG. If it doesn't have that it's not.

Dark Souls is an RPG and doesn't have skill abstraction. You are directly controlling your character and his victories and loses in combat are because of you, the player, and not the character. The same thing can be said about the Witcher games and the Mass Effect games. In Mass Effect, especially 2 and 3, I am the one aiming and moving around. No, it's a fact. Indeed, decision making was never even a big part of the genre but something that got popular recently. The character stats are inherent to the genre yes but as an effect of the use of a ruleset which is what defines it. Pretty much, Origins was influenced by the PnP roots of their earlier games with added MMO influences such as cooldowns. Then they tried to please the console audience and people who don't like RPG combat in DA2 and made it more actiony. Finally DAI got completely schizophrenic and didn't know what it wanted to be. From the initial videos I thought they were going to copy The Witcher 2's combat system but that wasn't the case unfortunately. I think if you want to appeal to audience who prefers action you should go all the way, otherwise you're stuck in a very awkward place.
