Remember when people thought he was the voice in Persona arena and then sho was revealed and then those screens of Ikutsuki in the game showed up and then it was revealed that it was Sho in disguse fucking with SEES for a total of 1 scene? Honestly, I think it's pretty easy to justify Goro. In a vaccuum, without the buildup/lack-thereof of Goro, it'd be a decent twist, and have potential.

Here's what I believe will happen.

Goro makes himself known as a threat to the Phantom Thieves early in the game. He doesn't know it's you, but he slowly builds up a general idea of their ages, genders, etc.

Makoto joins the team. She sees how frustrated Sae is about the case for months. Either out of guilt, or maybe thinking Sae would be a great asset, she tells Sae about the Phantom World and how they steal hearts. (For the better) Sae, shocked, tells Goro and the both of them test out whatever method to get into the world, and find out its real.

Goro has some mental breakdown because of how the truth of the phantom world and the phantom theives goes against his beliefs. He comes up with a plan with Sae, and purposely draws their attention and pretends to join their team. (They believe getting Goro off their ass would be a huge benefit)

Goro soon sets up the casino trap while letting Sae know about the heist. Intro happens, and after telling the story Sae leaves while Goro comes in and reveals his true nature, before trying to kill MC. (maybe he believes the justice system would fail against the MC, and takes things into his own hands.)

So Bad ending ends here. Good/True ending continues, Goro finds out he was tricked, he goes nuts, Sae tries to stop him but he somehow corrupts Sae. Phantom Thieves have to take care of both of them.

I dunno, maybe that's just how I'd like for it to go down.

In Atlus's defense, for a game of friendship mans to work, the protag has to be somewhat believable as a guy who six other random strangers can rely on to fix their problems and lead them to victory and command them in combat.

Throw in emo stuff, and you jeopardize the friendship building, which is 90% of the gameplay.

If you want a game where the protag is less right, you are going to get a game less focused the do-all-for-everyone friendshipping of the last two games, and NOBODY likes when Atlus tries something different.
