Any specific tips for playing Lucio on Defense? Until things turn into a close range skirmish, I feel like I'm not contributing much to the active defense. On attack it's Lucio's job to get people into those close range skirmishes.

The best I've seen is being a discount D.Va and muscling attackers off high ground.

In a game like Overwatch, sniper classes are one of those high risk - high reward. You can make easy and fast pickoffs to crucial targets like supports or squishy flankers trying to get in position. But instead you are forcing your team to fight 5v6 essentially.
If you can't kill anyone as early as in the first 30 or so seconds of the game, then your pick starts to hurt your team.

Also there are such fun counters like winston or genji who would fuck your day any time they're picked.

76 is standing on the porch of his old home. Ana yells that she's making tea. They sit in the kitchen and drink it. "Did I ever tell you I brought Reyes here?" "Oh, no I don't think so. When was that? Overwatch?" "Before, back in training. I had only met him 2 years prior and I was already bringing him back home; though my old man was already dead."

76 wonders if Reyes was right. He should have just turned away from that path. How different things would have been. Ana reminds him, that his actions saved the world. No one else could have done what he did. Reyes did too, at one time.

Frustrated, 76 keeps searching the house he goes up to his old room and notices the window is open. A photo album is open on the desk. One he remembers Reyes snatched out of his room way back when "he wasn't looking". The first pages are him growing up but there are new pages with new photos.

A age mark the size of a picture 76 recently came into possession of fits perfectly in one of the last pages. He smiles.

"Ana, I don't think its here. Let's head out."
"Alright then."

Too many rounds of being the highest contributing player as Widowmaker alone at the objective while some Reinheardt getting pwned by Tracer in a random corner of the map is say "fucking sniper on this map we need a godamn healer" and then the Highlight is some weak ass D'Va ult and the cards are some Mercy who just ran around behind Roadhog all game and Reaper damage which means he shot his guns because they can't miss.

It really bothers me that hanzo does better close range damage than Reaper

Yeah Reaper deals more dps on average over time in point blank, but who cares, hanzo can nearly match his ideal dps at any range.

Reaper has to get close to pump 2x 140 damage meat shots into an enemy to kill them

Hanzo plinks them with a 250 headshot from long range and ends them instantly. Or the 125 damage body shot at long range that cripples them and forces them to scramble for healing or die

Overwatch was a fuckhuge UN organisation that suffered from feature bloat.

Once they dealt with the Omnic Crisis, they started doing everything else in the name of justice. Tracking down criminals, doing drug busts, shit like that. Hello, fellow support/tank main.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. There are a number of factors contributing to trash DPS on your teams. Firstly, early in the season skill ranks are going to be off after people finish their placements, so randomly you might get over-ranked DPS on your team and under-ranked DPS on the enemy team. With that behind us, secondly, Blizzard still ranks DPS too high in general, giving less credit to tanks and support for wins and less blame for losses. The result seems to be every game you lose you're going to have competent support and tanks (unless someone is forced to play a hero they're unfamiliar with due to the auto-lockers) and your DPS somehow can't shoot the Genji who you're repeatedly killing with Mercy.

Another factor that I'm thinking about lately is skill rank ceilings for people who aren't team players. Imagine the Widow, Reaper, or McCree main or whatever who play nothing but that hero. Over time, their skill at killing improves considerably, but they don't get the message that team work wins the game. The result is very random games. When these idiots on are the enemy team, they're that Tracer who's running around like mad, murdering your team completely uncontested, but who you somehow manage to kill solo with Mercy half the time. When they're on your team, they're running off solo, saying they need healing in the first 15 seconds of the game, and getting picked right before you're ready to push, then say they're not going to switch because they have gold medals.

There's not much you can do when things are going this way. Pick a self-sufficent eliminator, do the work yourself, abandon tank and/or support if the shitters refuse to take over for you.
