I just now did 110k dps on Helya because I had 0 (zero) shards half the fucking fight.
This is with Agony on every tentacle and Effigy.
No shards whatsoever till phase 2, and then I got to cast UA grand total of 6 times. Throughout the entire fight.
I had Agony up on both Helya and Effigy all the time, too.
There was literally nothing I could do to push my dps. Nothing. No conflagrate guaranteed shard, no cooldowns, nothing.

I had this happen on Odyn and several other fights.
I get 1 starting shard and then fucking nothing the entire fight no matter if I have 100% DoT uptime, no matter if I play perfectly.
I had a mythic Xavius kill where I got to cast UA 7 (SEVEN) times throughout the fucking fight.
I have 30% haste and 60% mastery.
I have no way AT ALL to boost my dps if shards and meme reaper souls decide to fuck me over.

Well honestly I would recommend either Hunter or Paladin.

Hunter is my more overall choice, and that's mostly because Hunter is really good at both solo and group content. You have a pet that can easily tank most monsters for you, so really you normally have to just worry about killing and staying alive. I'd recommend beastmaster as your specialization.

Paladin is also a good idea because frankly it can do all three of the roles common in tis game, damage tanking and healing. As a new player I'd mostly stick to damage, but paladins can heal themselves so you can get yourself out of sticky situations if need be and if you ever do want to branch out into other roles you can do so easily.

I might disagree a little bit and say

pick the class that feels the coolest to you or that you like the most, don't worry about what is strong right now if you are concerned with going through the whole game and experiencing the story, any class will be fine for that.

Your first character is often the one you will get the majority of achievements on and put the most investment into (although not always).

Class balance changes and you can learn to play any class, it's most important that you like the character because it's the constant between expansions etc.

Yes I dropped my fire mage a few days after 110 for this reason, my fresh 110 outlaw rogue does more damage then my 830 fire mage at like 790.

Fire honestly feels really really bad outside of combustion, even with 50% crit I sometimes go to 4 fireball crit stacks, and good luck chaining enough crits for large ignites or high pyretic stacks outside of the 10sec combustion window.

Also cast times are fucking BAD in legion, too much movement ice floes is not enough at all, couple that with RNG spec = bad dps, and frustrating gameplay, fuck I almost punched my monitor trying to blink on the helya fight.
