HPM is fucked because the NGF, let alone Germany, is stronger than France, Austria and Russia combined. By 1870 NGF will typically be 5 - 7 military techs ahead thanks to research bonuses.

I can only assume HPM is balanced with the idea that the UK can do something, because every single game is the same. Germany blobs into France and/or Russia, France cucks itself, Austria allies with Germany after losing the war for hegemony and Russia does nothing, ever.

How do I into surviving as Jerusalem? The first few Jihads were easy to defend against, I just raised my own levies, not vassals, and grabbed a couple of holy orders and sat with a 10k army running around getting warscore for defeating each army they threw at me. Now one army has completely destroyed me.

Yes, it removes Byzantium. I think there's a sub-mod in the pastebin that restores it. HPM is more or less a vanilla+ style mod. It adds more political/social reforms and new decisions/events for most countries that try to fit in the theme of being historically plausible.

Sokoto yeah, gave it a break but I was pretty pissed at how nobody sphered me in time before westernization (UK and France kept banning eachother) so my techs were literally worse than Brazil's starting techs. I did it before as the Massina and could westernize nearly 10 years earlier than that, but it was a serious pain to manage the Sokoto holdings afterwards.
The first thing I did was conquer Mossi, then I went on a spree against the Massina and Bambara with the Jihad CBs. The Yoruba also attacked me in the meantime, but I destroyed all of their alliance brigades and accepted a white peace since the infamy from extra war goals isn't worth it (about a third of the nations I conquered were infamy free thanks to the 100 days conquest CB fabrication).
All I'll do now is take the French holdings nearby and call Germany to help me while I try to modernize the country. A tip: try to mantain very high relations with either the UK or France and very low relations with the other so one of them sphere you. It'll be painful to research all the basic shit now.
