It was DoA with Lightning and Meteor Burst existing.

True, the biggest problem with Dark Magician decks is the same issue the Neos decks have, they're relying on a vanilla that needs other cards to be useful. Blue Eyes gets away with it because it's part of the most heavily supported typing in the game, it's sole job is to make it to the field and it's support cards are far more flexible and forgiving. Not only does Dark Magician need to make it to the field, you need cards to make it's cards make it to your hand as well just like Neos not only needs to make it to the field, a neo spacian need to be there and either neo space, instant neo space or contact out need to be in the hand,too.

Konami could easily make actual good support for neos and dark magician but they won't because the cards are popular enough as they are and they don't love him as much as they do Blue Eyes, a monster so iconic even people who don't play YGO know what it is.

Pretty soon we're going to get more "Win more" cards for blue eyes and more mediocre garbage for the rest. Like Performapals.
