MiG-29 has the advantage in a sustained turnfight.
Mirage can pull higher alpha and will have the advantage just after the merge but will gradually lose energy until it hits the dirt if the MiG-29 pilot knows what he's doing.

I remember back early in the year, we were flying that op someone made where we'd invade a town and then hunt down kebab in the vincinities, and we ran into all sorts of desync problems in the early version of it because it had too many units.

In my experience the EDGE engine handles a lot of units decently well. I had 500+ active units (not statics) and maybe lost 10fps at most and I never noticed any major desync beyond the regular amount from shitty internet connections etc.
Stimpack's afghan ops has 700+ (probably a lot more now) units, but a lot of them are statics, which don't exactly take much CPU time.

Booted up IL-2 while I waited for DCS to patch (I despise using the standalone version of DCS because it doesn't automatically upgrade like it does through Steam)
Anyway, finally managed to finish the first summer campaign mission (I've never bothered to set up my controls properly before because whenever I unplug them, if I plug them into different ports it fucks everything up, so I never really played more than a couple quick missions)
Anyway, actually managed to land the Bf 109, wasn't even too bouncy, and can now choose my own mission types and aircraft going forth in the campaign.
Quick question, what's the difference between Ground Attack missions and Ground Support missions?
I'm assuming GA is interdiction, and GS is CAS?

Group support is supporting troops in contact, killing tanks.
You can also attack artillery batteries but I'm not sure which of the two missions they fall under.

Turns out all of your campaign progress, controls, etc., are saved in your install location and not a seperate folder in your documents, etc., like most other games. Fortunately, I backed up my controls (we'll see if they actually work or if they get all the joystick/throttle, etc. axis mixed up later), but I lost all of my campaign progress (thankfully only 1 mission, but it makes me not want to get too involved in progressing if it'll all be lost whenever I reinstall/migrate/etc.
Seems strange they have you waste 30 seconds of your life logging into their bullshit servers and they don't actually save campaign progress on there, although they do save camo unlocks/weapon upgrades/kill streak rewards/k:d ratios/etc., stuff that shouldn't need to be tracked because it either shouldn't be in the game or should be available to everyone.

Yeah, AI activity is somewhat random, but does coincide with the details on the map. The Stalingrad theatre did not have a particularly big air battle so you don't see much going on, but you may occasionally spot bombers attacking targets.

That's neat. I figured as much in regards to aircraft numbers, guess with attrition and issues with supplies, neither side could field vast numbers of aircraft like was occuring on the West (until the allies gained air superiority, I guess, although I don't know much about WW2 evidently).
Yet to see any strategic bombers, especially random ones (although I did see some large smoke plumes in the last mission I played which might have been their doing, no idea).
Shame the game looks like ass in the summer maps, I want to play it in order (summer campaign and then the winter), but the game just looks miles better in the snow. I guess it covers up the imperfections and the glare, etc., masks the lack of detail. Maybe DX11 will fix it, and fix my alt tabbing issues to boot, at the moment I can't really fly more than a short mission because of it.

My first somewhat clean kill in IL-2, I have a lot of trouble with the stick input (not sure if it's just the default curves not agreeing with me, but I always have a lot more trouble getting onto target than I do in any other sim. That and the recoil impulse seems to be exaggerated, even rifle calibres throwing the plane around)
Followed up in an intercept mission, got 4 good kills (hopped on the tail of a column of turretless IL-2s, exploded their fuselage tanks with just a couple of 20mms, 4 kills with only 30 rounds spent), but I somehow managed to not record them despite hitting the shadowplay button afterwards. Might be hard to aim in this sim compared to other games but the rounds effectiveness definitely makes up for it, I just don't know which is accurate.

Seems like a good idea, I've been dreaming that Steam comes up with a similar method of having identical mouse control settings across all games for similar reasons.
I've got that TARGET software that might be able to help somewhat but I'm too lazy to try and learn how to use it, and I believe you have to use that as your games launcher which seems like a pain.
Speaking of effectiveness of ammo, bombs are also really effective, although the only game I've played where I've been able to use 250kg german bombs iswar thunder. Knocked out a T-34 and KV-1 with a 250 SC bomb a good distance from them.
While I'm on the topic, has DCS implemented any WW2-era ground targets (AAA especially, but tanks, soft targets, etc.) for the WW2 modules yet? P-51 is a great module but it's hampered by the lack of a campaign (flying through rings like superman64 doesn't constitute a good campaign in a combat flight sim) and lack of assets to make your own missions with (default singleplayer missions throw you into ground attacks against laser-accurate BTR columns and zu-23-2s.)

Should add onto that last post that the shortfalls of the P-51 are the main reasons I haven't invested in the other WW2 aircraft, not until the Spitfire comes out at least. Prior to that I had all the modules, but with the slew that have been released from 3rd parties (some with dramatically less support and less quality, namely the Hawk), I've kind of lost interest in purchasing new aircraft and stick to what I have, which are tried and tested.

Vanilla? Chore to get installed and tweaked given that the old bojote tweaking tool is gone, however it's compatible with literally everything.
Steam Edition? No need for tweaking, however if you pirate addons and aren't running the most up to date versions, you'll definitely have compatibility problems and won't be able to run some.
All in all, FSX has pretty much all fields of civil aviation covered rather thoroughly with pretty good addons overall.
A2A and RealAir cover general aviation and some old things, like the B377 Stratocruiser, with absurd fidelity, Carenado has a broad range of aircraft available but simulated to a lesser degree of realism. PMDG covers the 747 and MD-11 albeit the 747 might be considered outdated by now. Their 737 and 777, together with the JS4100, are an absolute joy to fly. Flightsimlabs covers the Concorde and more recently the A320 in so much detail that it rivals even PMDG in systems depth. Aerosoft has quite a few planes, most of them to very satisfying system depth. Other than that there's Milviz, Flight1, Captain Sim, the Leonardo Software House Fly the Maddog which is old and ugly as fuck but also has excellent depth. And there's also the visual enhancing addons like REX and scenery packs.
FSX is okay at best on it's own but it's the addons which make the sim, in this case.

1946 had tonnes of expansions, and great mod support, you can fly anything from transport planes, to dozens of fully modelled bombers, probably hundreds of aircraft once you count the variants, on all sides of the war, even into the Korean war. Carrier takeoffs, etc.
Whereas with BoS, for example, if you want to fly a fighter, you're stuck with the Bf109 for Germany, and Russians get a couple of more choices but that's it (provided you aren't paying twice the price for an extra aircraft per faction, BoS/BoM aircraft tally up to be more expensive than DCS ones which are perpetually on sale)

I really prefer the maps in Steel Fury compared to SABOW. Steel Fury is set in and around the battle of Kharkov (I think the second one? I'm not super knowledgeable on Eastern front battles), so plenty of rolling hills and Eastern European forests and shit instead of superflat deserts.
Also, there's a much greater emphasis on supporting the infantry, I feel- most rounds I put down range are HE, other tanks are actually in the minority of targets I see.

Thanks for all the tips for the FW-190 guys, managed to get my first online kill today. Two more if you count (unintentional) mid-air collisions. When the 51s were actually fighting back I had to make a break for it after one of them managed to damage my wing. He almost got me too, but I kept rolling and forced him to overshoot. He dived away and I limped back to base. Even managed to land the thing.

Flight model is better than WT, damage model is one of the best I've seen in a flight sim (believe it's made by the same guys who did Rise of Flight, which had a similar one with biplane wings snapping and sexy shit like that).
No idea how accurate the flight model is, though. There's an insane amount of wind buffet, etc., more than I've seen in any other flight sim, and guns throw your plane around a lot (even rifle calibre MGs can throw your nose around and off target). But even a short, half second burst of rifle calibre rounds to the fuselage is enough to spring a coolant or fuel leak, which is great. Most other flight sims, even the little of DCS P-51 I played, require you to pump an insane amount of lead into the target and hope you knock a control surface off or sever a wing spar to reliably get a kill, this game is a lot more deadly.
That and the AI seems really good, no idea how good they are in a dogfight because I myself am not very good to test them, but the way they fly is a lot more realistic, you get on their tail and they seem to panic, when turn fighting they often pull too hard and do little stalls. I've dropped down on one guy, completely missed my shots, but the AI panicked and tried to turn and stalled himself into the ground.
The summer maps themselves aren't very pretty to look at, compared to the winter ones where the snow glare masks a lot and it looks great, and the DLC/premium planes seem pretty overpriced for what they are, although I'm comparing them in my mind to DCS aircraft when they're on sale (which they always seem to be), so I guess it's not a fair comparison.

Main reason I don't play DCS anymore, actually. Not reducing new/future products to 70% is one thing, but stopping all the large sales on 5 year old products makes me feel like I'm getting robbed, so I just don't bother.
That and they continually shaft steam users just to try and force them to use the standalone launcher, probably doing funny business behind the scenes which is why steam stopped allowing people to redeem keys frmo their store with steam. Don't trust some shady russian company with my credit card or to comply with consumer protection stuff.

It doesn't really make financial sense for them to lower the price of the product for such a niche market (see also steel beasts and those autistic war games). It's subjective but I'm willing to shell out the cash for a well done module. While there are issues, namely the visibility, the lack of era appropriate units and the damage model, there really no other simulator on the market with the kind of fidelity that DCS offers. For someone like me, who'll never get to fly, it's a big deal.

Like I said, I agree it's not very smart for them to do massive reductions, especially in brand new modules, but the fact I'm now having to pay twice what I would have for the exact same modules is what's annoying me. If I bought the Mi-8 module last year, I could have gotten it for 40% of the price that it goes on sale for now.
Feels like it's just money I'm wasting at the moment.

Should also add my 'shaft steam users' I mean tying everything up in early access and then introducing some arbitrary rule that they no longer put early access modules on steam, meaning if you want to play 50% of the modules, or anything that's been released since mid 2015, including the new map, you need to be using standalone, or at least that's how I understand it. Not necessarily the prices, although I have issues with them as stated above.

tfw my trackclip pro is deciding to be finicky, must have a dodgy connection underneath the headset clip as the IR lights turn on and off depending on the position.
Fuck paying £35 for another, it already fell apart years ago and I'm holding it together with thread and superglue wrapped around the light part to keep it from falling out, now I filled the cable area with glue in a position where the lgihts were illuminated and hopefully that'll keep them turned on.
If I need to replace it I'm either going back to the hat clip (lost it in the first week, fuck giving them £10 for a bit of stamped aluminium, but no one makes third party ones) or I'm going to invest in a wireless one, and then upgrade to a wireless headset, and be done with the awful cord issue all together.

The 109s are fine, it's just shitters that think you have to use 1.3ata all the time to get them to perform instead of learning to fly cleanly that have issues. If you fly the 109 well then you quickly see how underpowered all the soviet aircraft are. I hardly ever take it over 1.2ata and nothing can get near me unless I fuck up.
The 190 on the other hand was fucked over a few patches back. I've given up flying it, it used to be the best aircraft in the game if you flew it at 500kph+ and could still pull a few moves a lower speeds but now it flies like a lukewarm turd and has very odd accelerated stall behavior.

The AI are basically very aggressive dogfight drones, they never defend beyond jinking if you get on their tail so they are easy to exploit if you know how to do a basic rope-a-dope.
It doesn't matter if they are 1km below you and 100kph slower, they will still fly lead pursuit at all times and try to line up for a shot at you.
It's good enough to challenge new players but people who can manage their energy will find them to be no challenge at all beyond occasionally getting caught by a retardedly accurate prop-hang shot from 500 meters.

I only cruise between 1.0 and 1.2 ata and anything above that is just for short periods of time maneuvering during dogfights. We're talking seconds at a time here, even if the engine can take 1.3 ata for 30min or whatever.

The Yak can surprise you if you're not careful, so can the La-5 but the 109 will always leave them behind eventually. Some people get caught out and make it sound like the Russian planes are overmodelled but I don't think this is true.
If you run at 1.2 ata you'll get more than enough speed provided you set your stabilizer correctly and watch the slip ball. I generally cruise at 450kph.
