No, you're misunderstanding the way you should be doing them:

Pre-100:
>run around tagging everything that moves and try your best not to die or get any aggro
>do NOT open any boxes
>do the logout reset at the onset of part 3 if you don't have flying or at the onset of part 4 if you do, IF the invasions are moving fast enough for max xp/hour

At 100:
>open all of your boxes
>if you have all the gear you need, disregard invasions on that character unless you're gonna try to farm felbats
>if you don't, run invasions to completion to get as much gear as possible
>for offhand/shield and a few other slots if you don't feel like doing more invasions, go do Tanaan rares/treasures

You should NEVER open a box before 100 on a character will hit 100 before Legion launch.

As someone who has mained both, I'm definitely going maining a mage for legion.

Warlocks might be viable but the gameplay is so fucking boring and every single spec is horribly designed. I honestly don't think they could have fucked up warlock design more if they actively tried.

Mages on the other hand are a ton of fun. They're good in PvE and PvP and all three specs are well designed and enjoyable.
