Forumdads are people who grew up playing the original ELITE in the 80s and want E:D to be nothing more than a HD remake. They hate pvp, believing pvpers to be literal psychopaths in real life, and are the reason we have open/private/solo instead of open and a static offline. They are also the reason nothing improves, as every time someone brings up a useful addition (credit exchange between players, commodity/ship part storage, your ship knowing someone firing on you is wanted without needing to scan them first) they shout that person down, screaming about Chinese goldsellers or that storage would make it less challengIng, or that there's no problem with the bounty/wanted system, you just need to "check your fire".

Not sure if it's in the 84 elite but the frontier elite had these giant bulk freighters that I'd love if they'd return to the game.

I'd picture the things being capital ships that jump from station to station heavily affecting prices whenever they're there. Sort of a special event the player can follow.

Elite:Dangerous is pretty much the exact opposite of NMS.

NMS is a planet walking simulator with cosmetic ships.

Elite is a space combat/trading simulator with no walking and ships are completely different from each other.

If you liked walking on alien planets, try Solus Project.

SC didn't even have procedural generation until this year, every single thing has been hand crafted and in the playable builds is and will be for some time.

If you liked resource gathering planetside shit then you'll probably need to get horizons because that's exactly what that update is. Beyond that you can be an asteroid miner but I don't think anyone sane does that.

I actually like landing on planets but I stopped bothering with driving the rover around collecting minerals after a few hours.

My idea for colonies in ED.
>you can now land on any planet
>earth like planets are colonizable
>new ship added, very expensive
>biggest playable ship yet, with medium landing pad on top, called colonizer or something
>ship can be landed on planets and deployed in to a colony
>after deploying it stays there forever
>there are two types of colonists
>professionals: engineers/constructors , doctors etc
>you can hire them for money
>and regular workforce
>they can't be hired, only recruited as volunteers
>the more developed your colony is and the better the planet is the more volunteers you get
>pilots federation funding
>the further your colony is from the bubble and the more active volunteers you have in it the more funding you get for expanding humanity
>you will need to transfer all colonists and supplies on your own
So my idea would be that it costs you a lot to kick start it and takes a lot of your personal attention because you will need to deliver supplys but at one point the farms and infrastructures will make the colony self sustainable and the funding will start making you profit.

I just really hate engine pods. Means you can't maintain the ship while it's in flight, they're for vehicles that have to land at the end of the day and be maintained by a ground crew. Ships with an engine room could continue flying until they ran low on fuel.

Still missing two crucial things:

The ability to set a waypoint on the surface for you to approach in orbital cruise.

An actual orrery map for the system itself instead of the counter-intuitive linear one we're currently using.

>>152518067

Yeah, though at the cost of taking damage to the FSD. And don't let it pull you out of SC or the gravity will start tearing your ship apart.

There'll still be heat to deal with (except from black holes) but tidal damage starts affecting your ship immediately if you're too close and you drop to normal space where your FSD's spacetime-bending can't protect you.

>>152518264
They look like an afterthought. Life support is the size of a cd player? Shield generator is a small box where the ship could contain hundreds of them? This thing bugs the hell out of me.

Apparently white dwarfs, neutron stars and black holes will have a radius around them where you start taking damage from tidal forces if you're in realspace, that is separate and distinct from the radius of elevated heat around them.

Couple this with the fact that your ship gets badly buffeted while trying to supercharge the FSD from a WD or NS, and you may end up knocked out of supercruise against your will.

Ships like the Avenger/Gladius/Retailator/Vanguard/Terrapin are basically just stripped down decommissioned military surplus. The navy sells it's old extra crap to civilians to help pad their budgets and clear out hangers and warehouses. It's not that difficult to believe.

Now the civilian Idris and Polaris are little more hard to believe because the navy really shouldn't have extra capital ships just laying around going to waste during times of war.

Nice that they will let us get that close to neutrons and white dwarfs. More star variety is always welcome.

One small problem with ED has always been that small and huge stars look no different since your drop out point changes enough that they all look the same size (only if you look at the numbers do you notice the difference). They really need to change it so that the body exclusion zone for big red giants is in the upper atmosphere of the star or something (always loved the bit in Mote in God's Eye where they have to dive into a red giant's atmosphere to hit the jump point). Fuck the heat maths, fudge it till it works.

This would be great. Maybe some missions could give you an area/coordinates to search (rings of the second gas giant or something). Small structures you could waste would make you feel like you made a difference even if only briefly. Especially for war this would be great rather than just grinding out CZs or destroy X ships missions.

I find as long as you hit the enemy fairly recently (last 10 seconds or something like that) you get the kill credit, even if the AI killed it. When 2 players are trying to claim the same bounty I think it's straight up last hit counts.

It should be, to some degree, but things like that will certainly be rare but essential. With all the stuff Chris Roberts wants to do with ground-based habitation, farming, medicine, and R&D (systems that will all be set up with the full release of the MISC Endeavor), defending colonies from pirates and vanduul seems like it could very well be a rewarding profession.

>>152530408
The ASP is the general recommended ship for Sothis/Ceos. Currently, Ceos is down, so if you could bring whatever those meta-things are to make the run profitable again that'd be great. Don't do what I did and haul yourself out in a Type 7 expecting to run smaller cargo missions back into the sbubble. Apparently there are fucking none to be had at the Ring station.
>>
>>152531320
I don't remember the video I watched any longer, but someone set up a battle with a bunch of people at Security Port Kareeh. I think it was four on four. The defenders waited at an air lock and ambushed the invaders. Prior to that in the video you can see a pilot drop off about four or five people from the back of a Freelancer I believe. It was pretty cool. Just based upon that I think that when the game is nearing completion you'll be able to do what you're describing on a bigger scale.

Frontier got it right to allow players to choose open or solo play
Just as griefers forced UO to be trammelized, the griefing community in EvE forced Braben to pre-emptively neuter ED's multiplayer by allowing players to opt out of "PvP", that is, cheap ganks from minmaxing faggots exploiting grey areas just to make someone mad

Chris said all the celestial bodies would be in there, but you won't be able to land on all of them. And even ones like ArcCorp you will never be free to land anywhere, there will be a tunnel you are not allowed to leave in the sky, if you try to leave it, your ship auto pilots back.

Definitely won't be identical to Freelancer, but have a similar idea in jump gate --> other system jumpgate, or random wormholes found in superdense nebulae that behave similarly to jumpgates.
>>
>>152537393
yes, you lose 10% of the total price of the ship when you sell it, including upgraded modules

you don't lose any money on selling back modules

so, always sell all modules before you sell your ship to minimize the 10% loss
>>
>>152538449
Those kinds of 40 minute travel times you will never get, because you don't get jump points on far opposite ends of large systems, that will never happen.

But what makes Elite so compelling isn’t so much about the game as the experience. It’s the tinkering with and the taking out of a performance car for a Sunday drive, not to rack up more miles, nor to break any speed limits, but to just feel the growl of the engine and the wind comb through what’s left of your hair. To remember those carefree days arched over a BBC Micro or blinking angrily into a Lenslok and to forget for a short while that you have to make 357 people redundant in the morning. Elite is a hermetically-sealed escape capsule and it’s the best there is. Hell, you could fire the game up and just sit there on a launch pad and the sounds are enough to carry you away, so strong is your ship’s presence and so absorbing are the station surroundings.

Taking off, tearing through the station entrance a little too fast and just missing a Python, angling for the next jump, scooping fuel from a blazing sun, spinning the camera around your ship to catch its best profile, starting a fight just for the hell of it, seeing smok rise from the command console, hearing the screen crack and precious oxygen escaping into space and landing back at base with seconds to spare – these are the moments that make Elite essential. Trading, missions, mining – not so much. But it’s ok, we’re not going anywhere.

Shit I completely forgot it was going to be in a system over.

Stanton actually has a lot of shit and I keep forgetting all we have so far is a bunch of stuff orbiting a gas giant which will be its own landing zone. Arc Corp is another planet in the system.

Makes me wonder how their going to make a procedural industrial world and keep people from landing anywhere on it since it will obviously be nonfunctional. On largely inhabited worlds will you need to be guided down with markers once approved for landing or be shot down by orbital guns? Will permits and laws keep you from just landing anywhere else?

The only way they can do an industrial planet that you can land anywhere on is to have it be destroyed and abandoned save for outlaws because then it would make sense that things don't work.

It can vary depending on the module.

The number is the size and the letter is the grade of quality.

A 3A power plant is actually a bit better than a 4D, but modules that are highly mass-dependent like the FSD and thrusters tend to suffer a lot worse from being downgraded in size.

Can we kill Sarco instead? I get the feeling Braben is more high-level stuff and Sarco is the one that implements it.

But my basic plan would be: more dynamic galaxy, player agency and interaction.
- Make the BGS run itself with minimal babysitting from FDev (autogenerate community goals etc.) and make it's effects more prominent.
- Visible and audible war warnings when entering systems in conflict, fireworks at stations which won war/election states, that kind of thing. Push the BGS state into the foreground.
- Player trading/credit transfer, Pilot's Federation message boards at stations so you can leave simple messages for each other.
- Try to move the game out of the endlessly respawning conflict zones and RES and out into the system more.

Man dad's have shitty logic.
Given that FDev suggested the below for p2p trading I'd imagine the main reason we can't do it is because they're a bit shit at coding and their server/p2p system sucks balls.

Player to Player Trading
- Players can trade directly with each other
-- The player trade interface is available when both players are docked at the same market
-- The player trade interface is available when two players dock ships

- The player trade interface is a secure swap allowing players to transfer credits/cargo
-- Both players must accept the trade before it occurs
---- Acceptance must be redone by both parties after any change in the trade
-- Trading occurs in real-time and can be interrupted (for example by being attacked) unless taking place at a space dock
-- Either player can cancel the trade at any time up to the point both agree

The Thargoid sets upon you as a hambeast sets upon a block of cheese. The sickening odor of its unwashed nethers assaults your nose, taking every ounce of self control to not regurgitate your last meal, unsure as to the effect this would have on the creature already aroused from your receptive position beneath it. The engorged mating rod of the thargoid pulses and emits a thick slippery substance over your lower body. Horror fills you as you begin to feel it dissolve your flight suit. A heavy weight forms in your stomach and forces its way upward. As you let your stomach contents loose upon the floor of your besieged ship the thargoid detects the odor and lets out a loud howl. His mating rod is now fully engorged. With one swift motion he penetrates you. Your apparent tightness taking him by surprise, he wheezes inwards and bucks upwards nearly dislocating your hips as your colon strains to not rupture. As soon as the ordeal began it ended, the Thargoid now expired from the mating process lies next to you, his member still fully engorged.

However terrible your pain, you wager you dodged a bullet, as the female was not present to deposit her eggs into the helpless host. A steady 'clink' 'clink' 'clink' emits from the back of your ship, a reminder of the female impaled by a failed structural reinforcement when she forced her way in. Her eggs dropping out of her at a regular pace and rolling around as your ship's thrusters attempt to steady its course, thrown off balance by the two hulks attached to your hull.

It will be a long trip home.

Performance:
A > B > C > D > E
Cost:

Integrity:
B > A > C > E > D

eg: class 2 powerplants
2E = 6.4MW, 2.5T, 46 Integrity, 1.0 Efficiency (in units of heat generated per MW used by ship systems)
2D = 7.2MW, 1.0T, 41 Integrity, 0.8 Efficiency 2C = 8.0MW, 1.3T, 51 Integrity, 0.5 Efficiency 2B = 8.8MW, 2T, 61 Integrity, 0.4 Efficiency
2A = 9.6MW 1.3T, 56 Integrity, 0.4 Efficiency*

This x 1000

There's so much untapped potential in the BGS, it's frustrating. They kinda sorta improved it with 2.1 by making faction states more noticeable/impactful, but it's still a shell of what it could be.

You can't even tell who controls a system unless you check on the map. The fact that there's no difference between a system run by a dictatorship and one run by a democracy is a fucking travesty. They need to bring this shit to the front of the game, and give reasons to care about and work with the factions. Maybe you could even pledge to an in-game faction, like Powerplay but on a smaller scale. I think they mentioned being able to do just that at some point, but nothing ever came of it.

If they could manage that, as well as implementing some basic guild/social tools, I'd be satisfied.
>>

Engineering materials from shooting open mineral deposits.
Engineering data from scanning settlement networks.
Cargo and some engineering materials from finding "points of interest" that are random crashed ships and broken down vehicles.
Credits from scanning points of interest that are crashed beacons.
Credits from scanning networks that are part of settlements.
Collect bounties for shooting down illegal skimmers.
Missions to salvage cargo from points of interest.
Missions to scan or assault settlements.
Missions to shoot down skimmer drones.

Of all of those only the engineer materials/data are really worthwhile. The cash rewards from bounties (a whopping 1000cr), scanning beacons/networks or cargo you have to ferry to your ship 2T at a time are insultingly paltry.

Settlement assault and skimmer destruction missions can have cash rewards that aren't downright pitiful as long you can stack them, but there are still way better options for making money.
>>
>>152549846

You buy Horizons like a good goy and then go find them and grind rep/materials first.
>>

Being allied and friendly should give you some advantage. Cheaper ammo, repair, refuel for a start. Maybe even better commodity prices (just make sure there's no way to buy/sell at the same station and make money) or more modules (maybe discounted as well).

I would also try to make the 3 superpower's political system affect BGS/powerplay. Braben and Evans wrote a big long thing about how the 3 factions operate and it's fucking wasted cause there's not a hint of it in game.

Outside, pitching arse over nose, the freighter they'd murdered scattered its guts and prolapsed its crew. Shat its atmosphere with hideous grace and an undeniably romantic sparkle.
And so:
She laughed her breathless laugh. She groaned her mannish groan. She rolled her eyes and repositioned her legs, a lizardlike yank, a feral smile, to pull him deeper inside.
'Myquel,' she whispered, gripping him. 'Myquel Dobroba Pela-LeSire Lequire.'
It had become her habit, he'd noticed, to murmur his name at least once during sex. Just as it had become his to wonder, when she said it, if she were adoringly savouring the syllables or mocking the pomposity of his having so many. Whichever it was (and with Teesa there was a good chance it was both) the neurotic uncertainty was always banished within moments. Her next movement, her next shudder, her next moan. There simply wasn't room in his brain, he'd accepted, for both her and rational thought.
'We should rabbit,' he mumbled, clinging feebly to common sense. 'Right? Snag the goodies and go.'
She ignored it. Another flex of her legs. A groan. A re-anchoring of her hips. He'd known she would.

What does /edg/ think about implementing some kind of "karma" system?

There's rep for the superpowers and minor factions, but what about a general fame/infamy rating? Dads like to say shit like, "I don't trade slaves, it's wrong," but there's no difference between them and any other commodity in the game.

What if players had an alignment which became more positive for doing "good" things, like shooting pirates, and more negative for doing "evil" things, like smuggling slaves? This would affect what kinds of factions are likely to give you missions, what kinds of missions those are, and how you're treated by police, pirates, military, etc.

Also, it might be kind of interesting if you could see a player's rep when you scan them, so you know if you're dealing with an edgemeister or a white knight.

It means you don't need another engineer to tell you about them. Just do the meeting requirements and they'll contact you.

>how do I gain friendly status with the Mafia?

It's the Eurybia Blue Mafia. As in the Eurybia system. Maybe try going to that system and running missions for them to gain their favor.

So guys how do I join the federation?
I have 100% reputation with them just because of bounty hunting but I saw a ship required a "Federation rank of Midshipman or higher".

How do i increase this since im at 100% already
>>
>>152551838
That's one of the first things I did in ED. I bought slaves and turned off life support, hoping my cargo would turn into animal meat. I was disappointed :(
>>
>>152551661
>What if players had an alignment which became more positive for doing "good" things, like shooting pirates, and more negative for doing "evil" things, like smuggling slaves?

This is already in the game as a set of hidden variables.

Not karma specifically, but the game does track what kinds of activities you've been doing and how frequently/recently. NPCs can react differently to you as a result.

eg: if you smuggle or pirate constantly the cops will be more likely to single you out for scanning at starports, or even pull you over (interdict and then scan you). Even if you don't have any bounties in that system.
>>
>>152552082
Go to a federal system and try to find a "Federal _______" mission. Those increase your rank if you complete them. Then you can start grinding your rank again for another seventy goddamn years.
>>
>>152552082

Rep isn't the same as rank. Your rank goes up from doing missions from factions allied with that superpower.
>>
>>152552082

do a mission the mentions the federal navy
>>
>>152552119
The fact that I've played this game for a year and a half and never noticed that tells me it could stand to be improved, or at least made more obvious.

All it would need is an "alignment" stat on your reputation screen, and to show up when you scan.
>>
>>152552206
So there are factions and these factions represent a given superpower? To increase rank with the superpower you do missions for a supporting faction? This also increases rep right?
>>
>>152552072
The difference is we know we're geting it and you're at the "It'd be c-cool if they d-did this..." stage.

I was offering a suggestion of a system you could use, autist
>>
>>152552082
>>152552320

Rep just means they like you. It doesn't mean they're giving you stripes and letting you play with their guns.

You have to actually run missions for the Feds before they offer you promotions into what is essentially their auxiliary military.

>>152552320

You can see which superpower a faction is allied with, if any. They get a little emblem on the mission giver in the list and it says as much in their description when you click on one. Successfully running missions will improve both rep and rank. Both stats are visible in your right hand panel.
>>
>>152552280

You've probably noticed the cops hating on you disproportionately while trying to silent run smuggled slaves into stations but didn't realize the cause.

Fed/empire rank was like that too until they added progress bars for them. You'd think progress was broken but then if you created a tech support ticket about it they could tell you the exact point value you were at.
>>
>>152552826
Any good smuggling guides? I have a type 6
>>
>>152552280

You can notice the effects if you know what to expect, but there are many factors and other unrelated statuses that can trigger similar reactions so it looks largely random if you aren't abusing out-of-game knowledge.

eg:
Some combinations of government/system state actually don't mind smuggling and will turn a blind eye even if you have a rep for trafficking slaves and blow.

Others are suspicious of run-down ships so even if you've been a saint they'll still be more aggressive about scanning you because you haven't been maintaining your ship's integrity and paintwork.
>>
>>152552179
>>152552243

Ok so I've been to like 5 federal systems and the station and I havent seen a single one mentioning these... Am I doing something wrong?
>>
>>152553367

Don't bother smuggling bulk commodities. eg: buying narcotics in anarchy and selling in a democracy. The profits aren't appreciably higher than legal goods.
Take smuggling missions instead. The longer the range the more profitable.
Approach the station from planet-side to drop in as close to the front as possible.
Back away from the station so the cops don't see you while you line yourself up with the mailslot. If you're a good enough pilot and your ship is maneuverable enough you can skip this step and just adjust course on the fly without fucking up and getting tangled in the toaster rack.
Chaff does nothing to stop or slow scans. The myth that it does comes from a bug that caused player scanners to lose lock on NPCs when they deployed chaff. There is absolutely no such effect on NPC cops when they scan players.
Silent running is for pussies. Sanic right through the mailslot, throw 4 pips to SYS and slam on the brakes.
>>
>>152553829

Your progression toward the next rank has to be at 100% before navy ascension missions will show up.

A veritable work of its time, Elite Dangerous is a developer’s input on the contemporary attitude so critical of games that they’re often not given a chance at all, a window through which we see the creator’s wish to move his audience, as well as frustrations at the vessels of these emotions being ignored or enjoyed as “low art”.

Attempts at analyzing Elite Dangerous’s implications and unraveling its messages necessitate great concentration and effort, which is further exacerbated when so much of my blood flows elsewhere than my brain when enjoying this game.

Elite Dangerous is a journey, an embodiment of a search fundamental to our humanity yet abandoned by contemporary society; Elite Dangerous is the eternal quest for perfection. As philosophers and "fathers of vision" alike vainly peruse the void of their hollow souls for an abstract ideal, they achieve naught save for casting the community into desecration. Delving further into the hypothetical and the metaphysical only reinforces the misbelief that true beauty lies within. “Homosexuality,” Plato wrote, “is regarded as shameful by barbarians and by those who live under despotic governments, Both of which apply to contemporary society.

"Quod culus tibi purior salillo est, nec toto decies cacas in anno; atque id durius est faba et lapillis. Quod tu si manibus teras fricesque, non umquam digitum inquinare posses.”

As tremors of mirth reverberate through my corpus; my finite faculties discharged; my soul emancipated. Such is the power of Elite Dangerous. Elite Dangerous is not everyone’s cup of tea. It is perhaps best treated as a lengthy parable. For the actively dismissive it will hardly make much of an impression other than being an ordinary game with a cheap attempt at improving the game. For others with willing ears and eyes to match, it can be a novel take on the values and motivations surrounding the genre.
