Just getting back into the game, wanting to start a new character. Have a Ranger and a Warrior, wanting to try a caster. How are the three Scholar classes overall? PvP and PvE, I like to do both.

Ele and Necro are meta DPS dealers, with Ele being power DPS and Necro being Condi. Mesmer is a meta class as well but not for DPS - their sustained DPS is shitgarbage, as it always has been. However they've gained a new buff called Alacrity that reduces the recharge of skill cooldowns, and they can spam quite a bit of it. They also provide quickness (actions execute 50% faster) and reflects which are crucial in some encounters. Pure utility, but sorely needed utility in content that actually matters like raids.

Ele is decent if fading in prominence with recent nerfs. Necro is sluggish and hard to re-position but shits out condition-based death like no other. Mesmers capable of running power or condi and fairly good at either, especially if you know what you're doing, and can be almost thief-like in their annoyance factor if they've clever with portals, popping back and forth between two points instantly to assist team-fights and disrupt back-capping alike.

tl;dr, Necro will be a mainstay and damage dealing in both, Ele can do well in either, though isn't as advantageous as it once was, Mesmer does well for itself but has thoroughly carved out it's niche as support bitch so you better like that role.

I'm a fresh 80, got a set of exotics, and I'm looking to make some legendary weapons and get a general set of ascended armor for my mesmer.

I've been working through HoT content. What should I be doing?

My goals are to be geared up for WvW, and maybe dip my toes into endgame PvE.

im in wvw so i can't type up a super detailed post for you. But basically, I suggest doing wvw dailies each day, and doing tequatl each day. Wvw dailies give you reward track potions which you ought to horde and then use on whatever specific reward track you want, if you want to make a legendary then you'll be wanting to do the gift of battle rward track. I suggest doing teq each day coz it's fun AND coz it has chance to drop ascended weapon or armour boxes for ya which are useful. You will probably want to try fractals as well because fracs have chances to drop ascended items too... I'm not a fractaller so I can't really comment much more there.

Finally, when ur daily gets to the final gift m9ake sure to choose laurels - always laurels. You can use those laurels to buy ascended trinkets and such.

In high level fractals you have your boons stolen every 20 seconds, making it detrimental to the team when enemies steal large amounts of quickness.

Necro. They're hard as hell to die on, and viper lets you do ranged condi shenanigans to keep up stupidly good DPS even at scale 100.

Melee at high level fractals is kind of a pain in the tits so D/H Tempest suffers and not every boss is an immobile giant so staff Tempest isn't great either. So ele isn't really super great because your damage isn't going to be amazing against high-toughness mobs that either are dangerous to melee on someone made of glass or will run out of all your AoEs.

Is it just me or are traps the most fucking retarded thing in spvp? I don't really have a problem with thief traps as they're just long rectangles. It's more or less ranger and Guardian traps. They're just straight up massive AoE's that cover the point almost neatly.

I'm still in the party that thinks that we should have just made more specs than 1 and started dedicated remade or updated versions of already implemented skills as spec features. Nobody needed new skills, and honestly we need more general utility types across the classes. If everyone had shouts, physical, etc type utilities as baseline options, it would be easier to make unique traits to pressure or benefit their use while still allowing for unique spec options like manipulations, consecrations, etc. Also shit like wells need to stop all being the fucking same skill. It's fucking disgusting.

I just hate the fuck that they make extremely good area denial in spvp. When some cunt has all their traps on the point you're either forced to stay at range trying to pick them off or face some brutal punishment trying to contest it. (providing they just haven't already pulled you into it) God forbid if you have multiple guardians and rangers running traps.

They really should just make a skill that lets you detect and disable traps momentarily or something.
