Of course not. Central Fiction is running on the Continuum Shift course where next year will be releases of the last characters. It's Makoto,Valkenhyne and Platinum all over again. Es and Naoto have excuses. Es received the Embryo and was practically a god at one point. Naoto has some connection to Ragna and the Black Beast. You can easily accept their significant importance, even if begrudgingly, because the original stories that they appeared in gave strong reasoning for it. Basically, assuming they weren't playable yet and we didn't know if they were gonna be playable, if a hypothetical discussion came up where we considered the possibility of Es and/or Naoto being playable, it would be very easy and understandable to come to the conclusion that they would have significant conclusion, simply due to what happened to them in their respective stories.

Mai, on the other hand, found a random Grimoire in her school library and turned into a girl. She doesn't have a convenient plot ticket like the other two. If she turned out to have some sort of significant importance in the course of BBCF's story, it would come completely out of thin air. Nothing in Remix Heart ever suggested that Mai could have any real importance in the context of the games' story.

I found Taro utterly bland and their relationship really shallow so I didn't find it engaging at all. Really, the only reason Mai even likes Taro is because he's the only male she ever really interacts with in the entire story, and when you actually look at all their interactions, you'd pretty much find that there's no real substance to it.

Logically, there is no real reason for the girl to feel bad about being stolen away by another guy in this situation, because she doesn't owe the original guy she liked anything. Now, perhaps the person in question might feel bad about betraying their own feelings, but the difference between a crush and actual love is that a crush is something that eventually fades away. Now, one result is that the crush may evolve into love (so the crush disappears and is replaced by love), but a crush on its own isn't really worth getting that depressed about.

Well, there's really no real standard for that is there? Frankly and honestly speaking, human beings tend to fall in love for pretty arbitrary reasons.

But "I fell for him because he's nice to me" is not a very engaging love story, which was my original argument. Shit has no substance. Mai and Taro don't really even interact all that much. I don't see how anyone could see her crush as particularly interesting.

There are countless love stories in the world. Most of them aren't really worth remembering. There's no reason to give any praise to Mai's crush. It's neither written particularly well nor is it all that unique or interesting. There are literally thousands of love stories that are pretty much at that level.

Tsubaki's known Jin for a hell of a lot longer than Mai's known Taro, so you can more or less take it for granted that she has a thing for him. Just as you don't necessarily need to know why or how a married couple in a story fell in love, you don't necessarily need to go into the dynamics of Tsubaki and Jin's relationship (which, I'll admit, is also pretty shallow since they don't actually interact that much either).

In the case of Tsubaki and Jin, their dynamic is comparable to that of Romeo and Juliet (only far, far more poorly written and nowhere near comparable in terms of quality). Romeo and Juliet's love is completely shallow and the actual mechanics of their relationship aren't at all important to the story. Instead, what IS important are the consequences of that love. What that love ends up driving these two idiot teenagers to do. No one really gives a shit what Romeo sees in Juliet and vice-versa. So the main point of Tsubaki's affection for Jin is to accentuate why it drives her further and further into despair and causes her to act the way she does in BBCS.

Now, TECHNICALLY, Mai's crush on Taro exists for a similar reason, to accentuate her inner change as a result of her transformation. The problem is that Mai's development in this field isn't actually all that well-written. Part of the issue is that, while there's some turmoil in her due to her steadily losing her identity, the fact that we never really SEE Mai pre-transformation aside from a few non-dialogue flashbacks makes it very difficult to know just how MUCH Mai has changed.
