The problem with hard mode is there's no way to restart if you've just made bad decisions, like, I wanted to beat the boss of level 36 for the time based quest, but because I didn't understand RPGs at the time I didn't buy the necessary items and level the proper Personas, I can't go back and redo, and the grinding that I'll do will take time away from the social aspects of the game, which is the main focus of the game, the more I think about it the more hard mode just seems stupid, throwing more grind into a game that's really just a dating sim with an RPG thrown on top, as opposed to the other way around, just fucking why.

And you actually do need to do the prompts to progess instead of jumping anywhere you like, so yes it is forced.
