You can get Zweihander from Greirat after you send him off to steal shit the first time and he returns. You can find Gutssword from Farron Swamp, you can get Cathedral Knight Greatsword from Cathedral and FUGS (:DDD) from Catacombs or Meme Ruins.

Astora is pretty much right after crystal sage.
You can get zwei early by saving greirat, go to settlement and get the bone, give it to him then reload the area to get his emote and then reload again to send him out. Then kill the greatwood.

After greirat returns from his first trip, he'll sell the Zweihander. It's the lowest stamina cost UGS and so ideal for earlygame.

You find the Greatsword right in the goddamn center of Farron Keep. It's strength-leaning quality but incredibly heavy and incredibly high stamina-cost. You can also farm the BK UGS from the single Black Knight guarding the Farron Coal. He respawns and its one of the strongest UGS in the game at pretty much every stage.

You find the AGS at the start Cathedral of the Deep, which is the lightest UGS in the game. It's not the greatest for pve because its AR is low and the rolling attack abuse isn't as effective as it is in pvp.

Cathedral Knights in the same area can also drop the Cathedral UGS. It deals strike damage with all but the 2HR2 and is considerably lighter than the Greatsword for a similar moveset. The only downside is that it's short.

Farron GS obviously comes from the Abyss Watchers. AR is shit and damage is bad for the stamina cost. It's essentially a dex-based quality weapon with a unique and fun moveset.

You can get FUGS in Smouldering Lake but the low base damage and obscenely high weight/stamina costs make it impractical to use at that stage in the game. Once you have the stats for it, it's basically a damage upgrade to the Cathedral UGS.

Pontiff's soul makes the Profaned GS, which is the strongest quality UGS, and Greirat will sell the Lothric Knight GS after pillaging Irithyll. LKGS is excellent with pine resins and bundles and is ideal for enemies weak to lightning, but its scaling is quality that leans more towards dex than strength, oddly.

And the last one you get in the game is Lorian's, which has low weight, low requirements, low scaling and high base damage with a built in buff. Any build that meets the minimum stats can use it effectively and it's strong as fuck in general and especially against anything weak to fire, even without a major stat investment.

I'm playing DaS1 for the first time and there's one thing I don't quite understand. I can use the White Sign Soapstone to place a sign whiled Hollowed, but can people actually summon me like that? I'd thought being Hollow completely cut you off from online features. The Red Sign Soapstone outright says Hollows can't use it, but the White Sign doesn't, so I'm a bit confused here.

A random thought regarding DaS2 since people always complain about the "ganks" in it. It's not the "ganks" that are the problem, it's how they often just stick a lot of dudes in featureless hallways instead of using a combination of level design, enemy ability and enemy placement to make the individual encounters worth a damn. I think they do clever stuff in FotFG, No Man's Wharf, Brightstone Cove, Drangleic Castle Earthen Peak and Shrine of Ameme, but a lot of times it feels like they're overusing just bumrushing you with a lot of the exact same enemy with not even weapon variety.

Dark Souls 2 has a lot of area variety and rarely reuses enemies to the extent DS3 does, but as a result, the variety WITHIN the levels suffers a lot.

Part of the reason people disliked 2's group combat so much was because stamina costs were much less forgiving and most weapons with horizontal attacks good for sweeping groups of enemies had a mechanic whereby they dealt significantly less damage at all but the first enemy struck. Ultras also had a retarded sweetspot where the 2nd half of their weapon did like 40% damage.

They fixed both of those things eventually, but for a while after launch, even dealing with a group of those giant testicle zombies meant expending like 4 stamina bars worth of attacks while constantly kiting backwards, because the game's own mechanics penalized you so hard for fighting more than 1 enemy at a time.

I've never had any problems with the number of enemies in DaS2, but then again I regularly used the bow to aggro one at a time or pick them off from a distance, as DaS1 taught me. The only place that really frustrated me was the three ghost Sanctum Knights guarding their true bodies inside of Shulva, I had to aggro them and then run like a pussy towards the nearest ladder.

If you want to freeze your SM, then yes.

Completing NG without the agape ring will leave you at the most populated SM bracket for pvp, but if you want to co-op a specific boss, you'll want to use it to stay within the active range for that boss. If you plan on going through NG+, Agape is recommended so you can stay in the highly populated endgame SM range.

The problem is when the level design either doesn't allow you to be clever or the area is just a flat boring corridor. For instance, Fotfg and No Man's Wharf encounters allow you to use the elevation differences and get creative with dealing with the ganks, and I liked the Ballista ambush. Contrast No Man's Wharf rewarding you by giving vertical dimension to the fighting by giving you balconies and multiple floors in buildings do evade enemies in and forcing you to be careful of what you aggro vs. sticking 15 Syan knights into a flat corridor.

Pretty sure they removed the Royal Guard gank squad in SotFS, you face just two of them and a non-respawning Dragonrider before Velstadt. And in Drangleic Castle you can individually de-petrify them as needed.

I mean, beyond that there's just those Dragon Knights inside of Dragon Shrine, but you can completely avoid that by just mano-a-mano-ing the non-respawning dual greatsword one and the rest won't bother you. The WA hits twice, just like the DSGA.
The actual axe slamming down is a hit that deals both physical and fire damage like a normal hit, and the AoE is a second hit that deals pure fire damage. If you connect both hits it's comparable to a charged R2, but the AoE alone deals unimpressive damage.

Compared to the DSGA, they deal comparable damage. DSGA only deals slightly more because it has higher overall AR. The advantage of the demon's GA is that the WA is fully aimable throughout the entire animation and can't be parried, while the DSGA locks you in 1 direction as soon as you hit the button and is parryable for some silly reason.

The Fallen Knight set has the rope on the arm because it doesn't have the elbow piece anymore. The Fallen Knight set has Gold Engravings because it was worn by the "Elite Knight" version of the regular Knight, but even then the Knight set does have engravings on the helmet, just not gold. The armor is blackened because of some treatment that I can't recall the name of at the moment that makes it easier to maintain. Helmet is damaged because, like I said before, it's seen some shit. The scarf has been upgraded to a ragged jacket.

Holy shit, I've a much stronger respect for the design of Fallen Knight armor now.

Souls games all have a very simple, unremarkable narrative and excellent lore and worldbuilding to elevate it.

Bloodborne has relatively little lore and sparse worldbuilding, but an excellent core narrative and exceptional storytelling.

Different strengths, really. Bloodborne would work almost as well as a novel as it did as a game, whereas souls don't really translate to any medium other than a videogame because the most interesting narrative elements are all background fluff and contextualization.

Just wishing they'd redo Demon's Souls for PS4 or better yet make Demon's a multiplat. Chosen Undead is kind of a race traitor if they kill Manus since Manus was essentially trying to return the humans on top as opposed to the non-human races being the ruling class.

There's nothing directly linking Manus and Pygmy. He can be an ancient human with a power over the abyss but Pygmy should be even stronger as he's the source of all humans and humanity itself.
