Now with Pendulums and Fusions, and with Rituals and even Tribute summoning no longer sucking ass, things may be different.
But Xyz was really a much welcome addition at first. Extra Deck monsters, and Extra Deck toolboxing in general, has really been so powerful that it has essentially been required in order to compete at all.
But with Synchros being the only extra deck cards that mattered, with Fusion being beyond terrible, you were also essentially required to play Tuners. And not only did the game have far fewer Tuners to choose from back then, far from all decks could play Tuners effectively to begin with.
But with Xyz, most decks could still run Xyz even if they couldn't run Tuners. And it re-enabled a considerable portion of the card library.

Of course the power creep only got worse from there. But something did indeed need to be done to counter/deal with Synchros or else the game would have just continued to be Synchros the game.
Arc-V era Yu-Gi-Oh has really been the most impressive though. I never expected them to actually support all summoning methods as effectively as they have been doing.
