What is /sthg/'s consensus on Sonic's fanfics or fanfics in general? The times I've spent with generals, most people appreciate art more than written fanfiction. So I'd like to know how you guys feel about it. I've never been a fan of fanfics unless it's based on a lore that I enjoy like Guild Wars, but aside from that, I can safely say that I don't follow any fanfics.

Overload of new characters. Everything looked like plastic. Writing was too cheesy and terrible. Remember this was right in the middle of the majority of Sonic fans wanting darker plots: SA2 was a major hit and fan demand was strong enough to create the Shadow game. Sonic Heroes felt like a shitty kids cartoon in a bad way. That was in addition to the gameplay being overly padded with stages being too long.

As Heroes was the first third-party console game and following six Nintendo-exclusive releases, there was a legitimate fear among Sonic fans at the time that Sega was selling out to Nintendo and turning into kiddy Mario shit.

Cream's console debut, bringing three characters in from an obscure 32X game, bringing Shadow back from the dead, bringing Big back for no real reason, and to top it off all of them basically played the same with the different teams just being different difficulty levels. The Chaotix were newish. Most people had never heard of them before, especially fans whose first exposure to Sonic was Sonic Adventure and even Sonic X. The Chaotix were eventually in the cartoon, but not for a while.

Cream was also kind of new. She was only in Sonic Advance 2 (and maybe 3 and battle? I don't remember when these were released) and Sonic X. A lot of people tend to skip over the Advance games, so this was probably those people's first time seeing her.

GUN is completely useless without Sonic heroes. Eggman with his IQ of 300 already noticed that his nemesis is only one. When did GUN ever do anything worthwhile?

We had that in SA1 and SA2. We've even had Eggman threaten people at gunpoint - which works for Eggman, yes, since threats are within his character, but don't think for a minute he'd actually pull the trigger. Again, killing isn't in his nature.

But it is a cartoon, so you need to judge the world based on that fact. The Sonic universe isn't one where people die or get killed - and the few examples where we DO actually see 'death', it's always interpreted as that character simply moving on - the Flicky from inside E102 Gamma, Tikal becoming a spirit, Chip going back to sleep. It's a light-hearted universe where the good guy always wins and nobody gets badly hurt or killed.

Killing and death might work for Batman's universe, since that universe is set up to be darker and more mature. Sonic's isn't - you may as well ask Mario to start carrying around a gun. And yes, you see Bowser falling into lava, or Eggman surviving a plummet from a few thousand feet, but the point is that they're all still OK in the end. It's slapstick punishment - bad guy fall down go boom, then they get up and sulk back off to their lairs to plot their revenge yet again.

You aren't rewarded for the momentum you build up as Classic Sonic as you are when you play him in his original games. There's a youtube video showing that, the problem continues in Sonic Lost Worlds as well AND Sonic 4, a game that was suppose to be just like the original games but the physics were ass and half the time you had to rely on the fucking homing attack to get anywhere. Again, you're not really picking up on the idea of a 'threat' here. Aside from the fact that Eggman more often than not only wants these powerful entities to power his machinery in lieu of having all seven Chaos Emeralds, having that sort of power is usually used as a threat to make people submit as opposed to any actual desire to use that power.

Perfect Chaos: assumedly used as a threat over an actual weapon, which then got out of his control.
Eclipse Cannon: used as a threat as opposed to an actual weapon.
Time Eater/Solaris: the idea of time manipulation meaning he could go back in time and create his own utopia without killing anybody
Wisp energy: brainwashing people into serving him. Again, bloodless/arguably harmless
Dark Gaia energy: power source as opposed to a weapon

The only arguable case for Eggman doing any wilful harm to the planet would be in Lost World and his energy draining device - but even then, it's outright stated he'd only use it to borrow that energy.
