As far as I remember, Survivalists got massively nerfed in EO2 so that's why they aren't too popular outside of farming parties.
As for Ronin, just get Midareba as soon as you can and enjoy the damage. Feel free to get the elemental skills for additional coverage if you feel like it too.

Sniper I think it a little bit better for single-target binds while Arcanists are good at binding multiple targets (among other things).

Also in terms of damage Silver Arrow is great if you invest points into it for taking down high-defense enemies and Squall Volley has amazing synergy with Linksharks. The bind arrows also have really high accuracy, and therefore are great against Hollows and any sort of Chameleon enemy, or really any enemy with annoyingly high evasion. They're late bloomers.

It's incredibly polished. You've most likely either seen most things before or at least heard about them. The game is built on good art, atmosphere, great music, and solid fucking gameplay.

The story is barebones, but it's mostly because you make your own stories, without even trying.

It's hard, but most times fair. If you fuck up, it's on you, but you can overcome anything, so long as you think it over and come up with a plan.

Also, maps. If you've never made a map before in your life, you've missed out because its fun as hell.

Basically, it's your standard first-person dungeon crawler done very fucking well. Start with IV if you wanna ease into it, but if you want to go balls to the wall because you think you're king toughshit, grab EO3. Both are good games to start in and will make you want more.

Compared to typical JRPGs, like Final Fantasy, there's a lot less emphasis on the story. Your party members are all just silent, blank slates, and you get more freedom in customizing their skillsets. The lack of dialogue for your party lets you give them whatever personalities you like. Instead of going through several dungeons, it's all one big labyrinth that you have to draw your own map for. The only game with separate dungeons is EO4. EO4's probably the easiest for a newcomer to get into, but if you plan on playing the whole series, you would either want to start from the very beginning, or start at EO3, then EO4, then the two remakes of the first two games. Battles are a lot more fun than most Turn-based RPGs. The minimalist animations during battle let them progress faster, and regular enemies are threatening enough that you actually need to pay attention, rather than just mash A. It's also one of the only RPGs I know of where debuffs and status effects aren't useless. Trash mobs are dangerous enough for them to be useful and bosses aren't immune to them. Overall, it's a pretty comfy series. It's one of the only turn-based RPGs I never get burnt out with.

Landsknechts seem like the typical sword-using class, and you can build them that way and be successful, but their true potential lies in their Link skills. Basically, an elemental Link will have your character follow up with an elemental attack after a party member deals damage. It's underwhelming at first, but then you get a skill to allow your character to use Link with multiple party members, and then to Link after multiple attacks. This leads to your Landsknect dealing several hits of elemental damager per turn. This actually requires a rather dedicated party to set up, as you want people who can manipulate elemental weaknesses and people who can hit multiple times per turn. Best subclass is either Runemaster to amplify their Link damage or Bushi for raw power.

Fortresses are pretty basic; their main thing is to take damage in place of a party member. Later you can take damage in place of a line, and then the whole party. You of course want a healer on your team to make sure your Fortress can keep tanking hits. Taunt is very useful early-game, but loses effectiveness later on as more and more enemies use multi-target attacks (which Taunt doesn't work on). Their damage skills are alright but you'll mostly be having them tank hits. Best subclass is Dancer solely for Fan Dance, as it'll let you dodge all those hits you're tanking. Fun fact: Fortress's Earth Break deals damage to itself, but with Fan Dance this damage can actually be dodged.

Medics are another very straightforward class: their main job is to heal, cure ailments and revive dead party members. You naturally want your group heals as quickly as possible. Their damage skills are actually more useful than they seem; Heavy Strike has a good stun chance if you invest in it, and Star Drop is effectively an attack buff to your whole party. Note that Patch Up is strong early game, but the HP restore is linear and it'll soon become useless.

Nightseekers are essentially status inflicters, which are extremely useful in this game. POCKET SAND will get you through a lot of difficult encounters, and Venom Throw's poison damage is flat and thus with Spread Throw becomes great for clearing mobs. Also a surprising number of enemies are vulnerable to their instakill Assassinate. Follow Trace is a ridiculously powerful ability that makes it a great subclass for gimmickier builds.

Dancers are not only lewd, but also your buffers. Investing in your Waltzes will allow a Dancer to replace a Medic if you wish, and your Sambas work well with Linkshark parties. Although a Dancer's attack power is rather low, equipping a stun-forged weapon and investing in Sword Dance and Mist Dancer can set up hilarious stunlock scenarios. Note that Fan Dance and Speed Boost will cancel each other out, and therefore you should simply max Fan Dance. Also remember that a party member can only have three buffs at a time, so choose your dances carefully.

Runemasters are your standard mage class, able to deal fire, ice and volt damage, although each spell will have different target ranges. Note that you do not have enough skill points to max all elements. Volt is usually recommended as the third-tier Volt spell is the strongest against bosses and is resisted by the fewest enemies. Also don't forget your spells that boost your resistances and lower the enemies', they can be vital. Late in the game, Origin Rune is expensive as fuck but Almighty damage is indispensable against certain lategame and postgame enemies. Rather hilariously, Bushi is one of the best subclasses for them as Blood Surge also boosts their spells and Deep Breath is a somewhat-reliable TP heal.

Snipers can essentially go down two routes: either their Bind attacks (note that Binds are incredibly useful, especially in the second Stratum), or their damage attacks. Either way, they're somewhat late bloomers, not coming into their full power until getting access to all of their Binds and status moves or getting enough points into Squall Volley (which hits a shitload of times) and Silver Arrow (which ignores defense). Nightseekers are generally a great subclass, due to either their passive Ailment-boosting skill for bind Snipers or Follow Trace for lmao 2 Squall Volley

Now for the unlockable classes:

Arcanists are basically support mages. Their Circles are great because you only need to cast them once and they'll linger for a few turns. They can bind multiple targets unlike Snipers, and can also inflict powerful status ailments. Their Circle Mastery and Dismiss Heal lets them heal quite well when invested into, potentially replacing a Medic, although note that Dismiss Blast isn't really worth it. People argue whether a Medic/Arcanist or Arcanist/Medic is better, but you can decide for yourself.

Bushi are the most straightforward "hit things until they die" class. They have powerful physical skills and can deal great damage just by autoattacking. Fierce Strike is the best for damage if you have a way to deal with the paralysis, otherwise Flash Slice is better. It works great as a sub thanks to its great passives, Blood Surge, Deep Breath and Roar (which removes enemy buffs). Also if you pick this class you're a degenerate furfag

Imperials are the DAMAGE class; their the best class if you want lots of BIG NUMBERS. Their elemental drives deal retarded amounts of damage, mitigated by their cooldown time; you must be focused on maximizing their infrequent bursts of damage. Best sub is either Runemaster for amped elemental damage or Nightseeker for lmao2Drive
