I'm guessing it's split up into smaller rooms like a Metroid game? In that case, use large tiles.
>>
>>150960262
Same way you do it in any other engine, split giant rooms into smaller sections.

If it's tile based you don't even need to split anything, just render the tiles you see on the screen.

>>
How bad of an idea is it to livestream game dev? Both as a means of keeping yourself accountable to a schedule and talking through ideas? Twitch has a section for creative, and I think game dev would fall under it. Likely you would get next to no viewers, but talking out ideas with an even imaginary audience seems helpful.

Does this seem like a colossally bad idea?
>>
>>150960853

Better than having a tiny-ass dick.
>>
>>150960932
Some people actually do that, I'd think it'd be helpful for people starting out if you narrate what you're trying to do
>>
>>150960365
>>150960372
Its not a bunch of tiled rooms unfortunately, and I can't really go that route without changing the game up a lot. Im going to try just drawing a surface the size of the screen with the colour set according to y position, and use tiles for all the detail. Hopefully that works.
>>
>>150960932
Don't expect much of an audience and you'll be alright. Also don't use pirated software or do anything stupid on steam because someone is recording it.
>>
>>150960932
Depends on your taste in music
I often leave streams open just because they have a good playlist.

Personally I'd only do it after you have a little following to maintain at least like 5 viewers, streaming to 1 or 0 people sounds like it'd be demotivating as hell.

My thought process is split it into two separate "shows" on the same channel. Alternate between streaming games and making games. While this will probably split your viewership I know a lot of people watch streams solely for the purpose of someone's voice.

I do get the idea of needing a proper sound track. Music is always important to set the mood while deving.

I am unsure what constitutes "something stupid on steam".

Practice, that's what you need.

I can do thing, code and write. Coding took 4 years of schooling and endless personal practice. Writing took finishing the manuscripts of three novels.

Everything else just needs more practice.

It is also better to specialize than to generalize. Singular great aspects of a game with mediocre other aspects make for a better game than many a bit above mediocre aspects. Appeal to those who favor a particular aspect, being sound direction, art direction, gameplay, writing, or otherwise.

Don't worry pal, we'll all make it.

One of the nicest in-game experiences I've had was on the browser MMO Glitch. It had a chat function, but the bizarre thing was that it was the most chill, easy-going chat I've ever been to. I spent hours just talking to people and trading with them and encountered maybe one troll in months. The whole game itself was just so fucking relaxed.

Of course, it got shut down after a while. The assets (both art and code) were released into the public domain, though: https://www.glitchthegame.com/

This has nothing to do with what you can implement for your specific game, but I was just reminded of it and remembered the assets were free to use.

Fuck specializing, any of the artistic skills (drawing, composing, writing) takes a lifetime of dedication to get to a remarkable level. Coding is only worth specializing if you really fucking love to code and want to do it all day every day. Better to do a little bit of everything yourself and work on your own project than be a specialist trying to convince people to let you work on theirs.

Of course your game will be shit if you do it this way, but you're screwed either way.

What would you guys say is the best free engine for making 2D games?

I made a couple test projects in UE4 that worked okay enough, mostly because of the appeal of the Blueprint system and not having to touch any code lines.

But nearly everything I see on forums and google searches calls Paper2D in Unreal a joke, that's lacking in features and ease of use compared to engines like Unity or Gamemaker. (And that I'd be better served in the long run by learning code, rather than relying on blueprints). Is there truth to that, or am I being memed?

How much customization is too much customization. I absolutely adore the idea of being able to build something for yourself in a game, but feel as if I am spending too much time.

For reference what is being made is a space ship, the player able to purchase addition to their vessel and make them in an essentially modular "Attach bit into corresponding socket" format.

At what point, in your all's opinions, do rooms become too specific?

No problem, spoopy.

I don't have a Vive so I am not sure, but form what I've been googling you should be able to create inputs in your projects settings that take input from vive controllers, and those inputs should therefore have events that get fired. You'd probably have to run a check if there is actually movement or not, because most probably the event is going to be fired almost constantly. There was a guy who basically pried Vive open and did some investigation. controllers send updates as soon as any part of tracking system has some new data. Lighthouse 1 flashed? Update. Second one? Update. accelerometer detected changes - Update. And so on.
>>
>>150965075
so the player can purchase rooms and add them to their ship in slots? then one room per function that you want in your game.

or do you put big equipment and machinery in slots inside a room?
>>
>>150965032
2-3MA is possible if you have friends, however friends are hard to come by for /agdg/ users.

Also it is still better to specialize than have many slightly above average aspects. A game is defined by its good aspects, as long as the rest are passable. You're not going to stand out by being "pretty good" at everything. A game stands out with a phenomenal singular piece supported by average to mediocre pillars.
>>
I missed what music anon said about the phrasing.
>>150941279

As long as the options aren't overwhelmingly numerous (6 is good, 12 is a lot, 24 is only barely manageable, 48 is ridiculous). Also, make every different choice stand out from the others as much as possible.

>you could time the orbits so that some computers weren't always accessible
Brilliant. I love cycles within gameplay, so some resources will be perodically unavailable.

Right now I'm thinking of a colony ship on its way to Alpha Centauri, so maybe theres an automated ship that was sent ahead of you, in orbit around the planet you're trying to get to. But what resources or gameplay mechanic could it offer when its in sight? Navigational aid I guess?

The ship functions as a living space, housing for NPCs (NPCs require places to stay aboard you ship, with different levels of accomodations). Rooms require certain people to crew them, and rooms have slots for certain machinery.

For instance the Life Support room has an upgrade path, the upgrade path allows for larger and more complex equipment. However the more complex the equipment the more or better people you need to crew it, and thus making it so you need to get more crew space.

There are also luxury rooms that help crew moral. Defensive rooms. War Rooms. Etc.

Many rooms have a lot of slots to decorate with, the most being the bar with 14 small wall decoration slots, 6 medium wall decoration slots, 1 large wall decoration slot, 2 large furnishing slots, 6 medium furnishing, 10 small furnishing slots, maximum 15 staff, 10 luxury machinery slots, 10 entertainment machinery slots, and 10 food/drink processing machinery slots.

You manage a ship, a crew, and build a larger vessel. The game is focused on the vessel and in game events are both triggered by certain rooms, and certain items in rooms. There are both generic and unique crew members.

At the moment I am working through modeling. I do not come to /agdg/ often, but would like some input.

>>150965908
What the game amounts to on a whole can be described as this:

>Sunless Sea in space with a far greater focus on resource management and interpersonal crew relations.

Star hopping and stopping at strange ports. Interacting with individuals, picking up crew members, unraveling mysteries, etc. There is no "open space" in the game for character movement except for inside one's ship and for movement of said ship. Ports are simply places to stop at and interact with statically.

for the cosmetic customization, nothing matters, do whatever you want

for the other upgrades, i'm assuming that there is a certain amount of space in a room, and upgrading and expanding a system requires you to use some of that space?

if you start a system in one room, and bump into the walls before maxing out the system, are you out of luck? or can you add and remove walls?

>>150965075
also you have to make the choice whether you want a game where you can do anything to customize your ship, including building walls and rooms, or you want to constrain your player to the more optimal choices.

like, you could let your player build their ship from scratch, making shitty suboptimal ships 90% of the time. or you could have N rooms per ship, that basically function just like equipment slots in an rpg.

if there is any choice that is always made the same way, cut it out because it's not a real choice

for events and shit, look at what desertdev is doing >>150961326

>>150965531
if you are aboard a satellite orbiting a planet in a star system busy with space traffic, you have more options for which ships to hack, since ships leave and enter the system, your planet can block communications for a few minutes, etc etc

"hacking game" is still rather broad though

So I got the ultra-huge background problem solved. Just draws a colour based on how deep the sub is. Little bit of math has it doing nice aqua near the surface and transitioning to dark blue as you go down, and then to very dark blue as you go even deeper. Not webm worthy but still progress.

Thanks everyone for the help the last couple of days.

Now my game might not just be another VR arena shooter, but something more puzzly/exploratory with spoopy monsters that you have to fight. Couldn't have done this if you guys hadn't told me how much the original sucked.

Reminder that the stutteryness of the video is because VR + not VR ready computer struggling to keep up, is smooth ingame

if you're still in the experimental phase, can you try the half-lambert lighting described in this book

http://gen.lib.rus.ec/search.php?req=unity+shaders&lg_topic=libgen&open=0&view=simple&res=25&phrase=1&column=def

I think it maybe better suited for "cartoon" style more than the default toon shader.

Both Overwatch and Team Fortress uses half-lambert shading/lighting instead of toon shading

TLDR if you are planning to depend on others or think the answer is to work with others, than you are fucking

Long version below.

You have learned nothing.

Pls do not depend on other people. You can take your destiny into your own hands.

If you are 27 and neet you can put 16 hours into something at least 12 hours. The idea that you need someone else is pathetic.

Also, if your motivation to get fit is due to girls it will fade in two weeks.

How long have you been neet?

If it more than 1 year and your thinking someone is going to save you, than you are a fucking idiot.

Who would work with someone like you? You would just be dead weight.

A platformer is a game that focuses on jumping (on moving platforms and shit), but nobody uses it like that.

ie: Mario is a platformer, Metal Slug shouldn't be (2D action?) but everyone will call it a platformer anyway.

IMO:
Side-scrolling describes a perspective, not gameplay. It's similar to top-down, first-person, etc.
So SMB is a side-scrolling platformer and Contra is a side-scrolling shooter.

Implementing sounds seems easy enough but I imagine there's a lot of stuff you only learn with tons of experience. I want to avoid the common pitfalls.

>>

It's awful. Truly awful. If you desperately need music, then just use https://incompetech.com/ or other royalty free music. What you posted is really, really bad and grating on the ears. Would instantly turn off players to your game.

And if you made this and are pretending you didn't it, some advice I would give is to lower your volume and choose a different synth. Make shit that is good on the ears, not make you want to blow them off.

Anyone know common mistakes regarding collision layers/masks in Godot? I got some shit that should be colliding but isn't and it just ain't logical.

I mean I made a bullet for the player, it should collide with stuff in the terrain and enemy layers. I made a copy of that file in another folder to use as an enemy bullet, that should collide with shit in the terrain and player layers, other than this (and the different colored sprite I gave it) the objects are the same.

In the game, both bullets collide against terrain, enemy bullet hits the player but the player bullet doesn't hit the enemy. I've tried putting the enemy's hurtbox in all layers (including the terrain layer, with which the bullets collide correctly) and they still go right through like the hurtbox doesn't exist, except it does.

I've been staring at this shit for over 2 hours now, mah progress.

Animations take weeks, man.
And yes, it's the main character. He needs a lot of animations, and they should probably look as nice as possible (for me), as the player will see a lot of them.

Also, I can't program - I just make graphics, so that's my part of "just like making game" ;^)

what mindset? the "remain ignorant and just bee urself" mindset?

nigga if you didn't need to study and the fundamentals of drawing just come natural to humans then how come art in europe looked like the fucking bayeux tapestry until the 14th century or something? tip: it was because people studied, came up with techniques, and got gud

if you know literally nothing about art and spend 100,000 hours practicing drawing without studying any kind of technique, in the end you'll still be a shitty artist because quality study > directionless grinding. you don't even know what to grind.

Depends.

I'm using Rust, so I don't need package management for libraries. The driver situation with Vulkan also isn't so great right now. X11 is even worse than WinAPI, and Wayland is still way too immature. If I could just use WinAPI and DX12, I think I would be much more productive.

Linux would be a lot easier if I were, say, using C++, SDL2, and OpenGL.

I haven't checked out the Rust situation on a linux machine. I typically work in C, C++, C#, Python, Lua, Clojure, and am dicking around with F# right now. I haven't tried using F# on linux but the rest of them (with the exception of C#) have been incredibly simple and straightforward to get up and running with on linux while most of them were a massive pain in the ass on windows.
If you don't give a shit about being cross-platform just dev on windows and use directx. Also, yeah, everybody in the world is in agreement with you that X11 is absolute ass.

I've worked on several. One with uni friends, a couple of projects with people from 4chan (although I knew them for a while first), and my current project with people from 4chan that I paid
The project with uni friends was a fucking nightmare: most people (4/7 of us) never did work despite physically working in the same room, and the work they did do was garbage.
The projects with people from 4chan were a wash because of a lack of motivation on their end. They weren't invested in the games, so they didn't really care and wouldn't do work if constantly pushed and I eventually gave up.
My current game with people just straight up hired is much, much better. The two other people I hired for art and music completed the work with minimal issues, and while it's hard to tell if it would have been the same without paying them, adding money to the equation makes everyone more professional and take it more seriously (myself included.)
Getting a good group without money involved is possible, but it ain't easy. More than likely teams without invested interested will wash out, and the leader needs to be really on the ball
>>
>>150988916
Rust is obviously no WORSE on Linux than on Windows. It's just that getting libraries through Cargo means package management is unnecessary (whereas, with C++, I would want it).

Haskell is another language I like to play with, and it's also pretty good on Windows because of stack.

Friendly reminder to make mobile games if you're a 1MA

- More likely to finish it (most mobile games could be made in a month or less compared to PC games which will take you a year or more)
- Far less art requirements
- Far cheaper
- PC is almost just as bad in terms of shovelware and oversaturation these days
- Easier to get a random person to try your game on mobile than download it on PC
- If your game is shit you didn't waste too much time so you can move onto the next thing, if your PC game is shit you'll probably give up entirely

I think the head needs a slightly longer, smoother bobbing motion for it to match the rest of the sprite. Also the tail's own bobbing motion doesn't seem to be influenced by the body movement, and judders from position to position.

perspective and anatomy don't count for shit if you can't even draw something that resembles real life and/or what you imagine
perspective and anatomy are needed to fix up what you're drawing; if you can't draw a straight line or a smooth curve or a not-completely-shitty oval to save your life you need to work on those things first
>>
>>150990553
Both have their place but I agree with most of your points about mobile dev.
People who play mobile games are generally happier and more laid back about games than the pc crowd which is frankly autistic. Mobile gamers just want something to play, whereas many pc gamers just want something to critique and don't even enjoy games.

Been working hard on the musical front, how does one go about getting commissioned for projects?

I'm nothing amazing yet but for only a few months work and being self taught I've improved quite a bit from when I started, and when I git gud enough I think it'd be a lot of fun to make music for anons that can't or don't wanna. Then I can move on to art.

Not him but this is why you learn to target trends or niches that can be filled. And if that feels dirty to you, stay out of mobile games entirely, because nobody wants or needs a game for which there are already 10,000 titles. There are still a number of things for which the competition is low, and any game put out there will be played (and purchased), but I'm not going to name them because that'd be cucking myself.

I can't draw, and if I could there's a good chance I wouldn't put it on DeviantArt
what I'm saying is if you don't have the basic mechanics down (like I don't), technique is irrelevant (like how I can't work on perspective currently beyond drawing boxes with slanty sides)-- I know quite well how things farther away look smaller and closer together, it's not a hard concept, but that doesn't help me, and neither does knowing what a skeleton looks like or having a map of human musculature on hand

Weapon/tool ideas for a 2D game where you're a little research sub exploring and fighting sea monsters? So far:
>depth charge: high damage, falls slowly, detonates on impact or after a long timer, can blow up destructible rocks to open new areas
>buoyant charge: depth charge, except it floats. Useful for opening paths in tunnel ceilings
>torpedo: high damage, high range, but does that torpedo "dip" movement when you fire and takes a bit to get up to speed, so hard to use at close range
>spear gun: less damage then torpedo, very small range, rapidly loses speed, but goes perfectly horizontally so its easier to use in close quarters
>net launcher: used for capturing small critters to bring back to the surface and sell. Immobilizes huge enemies temporarily.

Thinking about letting you harpoon and slowly tow dead sea monsters back up. You'll go slower and burn more fuel, but the payoff could be worth the risk.

I'm glad you asked. First off each world change gets a new type of puzzle cube, 2 new enemies, a new boss, and in general every single level adds a new trap or kind of object with its own purpose to the game. (Kinda like how mario games are done with a new thing introduced in every level with pacing and reusing old levels stuff in the mix).

The yellow follow puzzle cubes in general follow the players movements, so on this first desert level the player had to gather four of them and make them fall into the holes to create a bridge for example.

turns out F# discriminated unions, records, and match expressions are comfy af
This language is making me enjoy programming again.
The main stupid thing so far is that order of files in the project matters so if you define "Orange" in a file that is after a file that tries to use Orange, then the compiler shits the bed and pisses on the curtains.
But yeah, other than that one small annoyance, pretty damn comfy.

Records are just structs, match statements are a less powerful version of switch statements (no fallthrough). C++ has unions. Have fun making your slow game that drops frames all the time while it's busy collecting garbage.

I already have a plan for this. You know how studios sometimes have a saying, like "EA Sports, It's In the Game" or other horseshit.

My plan is to go "Cedar Games" then there to be a pause, not a long one, like the game could have begun loading. Then you hear a low guttural cry of pure agony. I'd record like 40 of them, a random one playing each time as I try to convey what it was like to make the fucking game for these ungrateful shits.

I've been practicing how to convey agony without words, just noises of pure hurting.

It is viable. You will probably want to use Tiled for creating maps. Data serialization will be annoying to set up and creating your own editor tools if you want them will be a huge time sink. I've always wanted to try using Unity editor as an editor tool and then exporting the data into other formats and deserializing in Monogame.

an rpg or arpg where the MC is a cute flat chested girl on a quest to get big boobs to seduce her love interest.

every time you level up her boobs get bigger. Bigger boobs means stronger attacks, but they also have weight and will decrease your speed

there are also armor and weapons which can be equipped that will increase or decrease bust size

there are multiple endings depending on how large or small her chest is when you beat the game.

You're part way there but mostly wrong on all accounts.
C++ has unions but they're not even close to the same thing not to mention the explicit purpose of a C++ union is to allow a region of memory to be re-purposed by other variables when said region is no longer in use; this is to make the most out of extremely scarce resources in constrained environments. It's used a lot for what is, essentially, a reinterpret_cast but this was never its intended purpose and isn't actually "safe" to do in this manner.
Match expressions are more powerful than simple switch statements allowing for pattern matching against various types and allowing for the compiler to detect if all cases are being handled or not. Also, they provide type safety, something that can't be said for switch statements. Concerning fall-through, I've never once come across a case where this improved quality of life or was even necessary in all the years I've worked in C and C++. Maybe I just wasn't working on the right projects but it's something that is of no consequence for myself and will not be missed.
Records are a bit different than structs on .NET in how they're treated by the garbage collector (one is a reference type created on the heap, the other is a value type on the stack). Structs have pass-by-value behavior and aren't suited for big-ass objects. But, essentially, they're the same thing.
Garbage collectors making it impossible to create a well-performing game is a myth typically perpetuated by people who are unfamiliar with working with languages which utilize a GC.

How do I go about designing a 3d area?
I want the individual areas to be small like OoT and have transitions between areas. Should I not be using the Unity terrain tool If I'm going to be having smaller areas?
Also, Do I make 1 larger scene of an "area" consisting of 5-10 rooms? or a new scene for every room?
>>
>>151008536
The Unity terrain tool is extremely old and never updated. I would never recommend using it. I would split the rooms up into different scenes and then use the new SceneManager system to load and unload them. This gives you more flexibility with what you have loaded at any time but also would enable you to work with other people on the project on the same time if you ever needed to.

>>151008935

Like anything where you make art, success is either based on luck or selling your soul to a major corp + slightly less luck. worse than every other art field is that small businesses have no interest in comissioning games for the most part.

Also worse than other art fields is that in order to make a game you need to be proficient in art, animation, music, coding, sound design, and "game design" or find some way to hide the deficiency (or hire someone else).

If you make a painting in a week or two you can sell it for $200 and sell prints for $20.

If you make a game in a year you can probably charge $10 if it's really good but no one will buy it until it's on sale for peanuts anyways.

Games are a shitty way to make money.
>>
>>151009592
>I guess programming boring shit and getting some respect is better than programming fun shit and getting none
I'm not sure where you are getting the idea that game programmers do not get respect. My experience was completely the opposite.
>>
>>151009597
Also, game industries can have weird non-compete agreements. When I worked in film having side projects was cool; there was just a clause that said if you made over a certain amount you had to disclose it to the company. I'm sure most people who had a second business didn't, though. They basically didn't give a shit what you did outside of work, which was pretty nice.

When I worked in games, I had a non-compete agreement that specifically barred me from working in games for a year after I left the company (which was never enforced or completely unenforceable, since it never stopped other employees from going to different companies). Some companies also impose a right of first refusal, which means that you're allowed to have side projects BUT you must pitch it to them first and give them the opportunity to turn you down.

Basically, there's a lot of bullshit out there, so if you want to keep making games on the side once you're employed, make sure you read your employee handbook from cover to cover.

Day 20 of trying to make games.

I had almost no time for gamedev this whole weekend because I had to be away from my computer. All I did today was a short practice run animation in aesprite.

I wish I could have taken the whole weekend to hammer out a hundred of these to get comfortable enough with the motion to experiment and find one I like, but alas.

>My plan if I were to take this seriously would be to find an artist who would be interested in partnering up . I tried the one-man-army thing a few years ago and realized it's way too much to learn. Best to stick to one or two areas and try to enlist others who can focus on their craft as well.

This is true, but now you have to make enough money to pay him and/or feed him which increases the financial load.

Don't move into game dev as a business until you have an established fanbase and know you can pay the bills with it. You will regret it otherwise.

>literal hundreds of small bullshit ones.

I highly doubt you've made hundreds of small games that took ~2 weeks to make. If you did you'd know exactly what to do at this point.

>>151009592
If you going into making games with this mindset you WILL fail.
Doing my bachelor degree for IT atm at college and only two years in. Yet have my class has already quit most of them because they thought it's a easy career to make money in.

DESU IT has to be one of the worse career choices if you don't already like it in some way.

that's basically where I'm at . Getting internships through college, but there isn't anything vidya related .. it's all banks and that kind of stuff.
I got into programming through game dev but learning it formally just made everything into tables and databases and I wish I could find a clear path to get back to the gaming side.

To solve the money issue I'm making a patreon porn game alongside my dream game. The tech I'm making for the porn game is also going to be used in my dream game and I like working on the porn game anyway since it's something I want for myself, so I think it's a good way to solve the money problem if you are capable.

Where I live there's a internship for basically anything and right now there's plenty of dumb startups trying to get into VR and failing.

I'm sure if you go to a decent sized event you'll get a lot of internship/hiring if you know what you're talking about.

EG; I went to Hack The North and just listened and talked to a few presenters afterwards and got to know them. I'd say around 70% of the people I talked to offered me a internship / opportunity to be hired afterwards.

One can infer that it's a lot for the person who makes a point of indicating the exact amount a person is making as if it's significant in any way.
Maybe you're the one who needs a refresher course on basic English.

Locked doors were updated, I got rid of the old switch idea (saving that model later for a later world with a new object/purpose).

Made a new block being the key block which Boku has to touch to unlock the doors now instead of touching a switch like before. (it can be in the air or on the ground or moving).

Key cubes can also be colored so white is for boku and the other colors need the right puzzle cube.
>>
>>151013275
are you going to match the color of the lock with the color of the key block so you know you need to get the pink block to disable the pink lock, etc. ?
>>
>>151013479
Didn't think about that, but that is a good idea so thanks!

>$400 a month
Anon... off the top of my head, I can think of one webcomic artist who just this week announced she was quitting her day job because she's making over $4000 a month.

I'd do it but I wouldn't be able to look anyone in the eye knowing I drew porn for a living, even if the money was good. Which it is.
>>
>>151011848
you do work for them, with a lot of indirection and "oh i'm just donating"
>>
>>151013721
I'd do it, I don't care about other people's opinions and my friends are accepting of the weirdest stuff short of pedophillia, and my family is too tecnology inept to know about.
I really wish I could draw ;+;
>>
>>151011534

your retarded, 400 a month is an extra 4.8k in your pocket every year

that's only 48k a year though. Plus no perks like insurance plans, 401k, etc. from your company.
I wish that's all that was needed to have a decent standard of living here lol

>>151014493
Are you trying to imply that 4800 over the course of a year is a lot of money? Because it isn't.
