The Beastmen are a cool faction but the pack is a bit overpriced for what you get. There probably won't be a price drop for some time, so if you're impatient or really like the Beastmen then go ahead, otherwise wait it out.

There's a button in the bottom right of the quest battle window that you can use to teleport for 5k gold (when the battle's finished you're automatically teleported back to your original position)

When Islam rose, the Byzantine Empire was reeling from a destructive war with the Sassanid Empire. This allowed the huge and fresh armies of the Rashidun Empire to expand into the neighbouring depopulated and scarcely defend Byzantine territories in the Levant, Syria and Egypt. The other territories in Africa were simply too far away and unvaluable to defend. Add into the equation that they were completely unexpecting the previously harmless Arab tribes to unite and do such a thing and it isn't much of a surprise they had such success. However note that they were never really threatened by the Arabs, only unable to defend their far-away provinces when outnumbered so heavily. Even the Turks were not capable of existentially threatening the Greeks until the Fourth Crusade. After this they were weakened irreparably and the Turks could finally finish them off.

Usually either the AI only hits settlements that just happen to not have their walls yet, or they siege forever until attrition and I can never get them to attack the walls.

I honestly had a harder time with the ERE.

The WRE is pretty easy, if you just raze all of your cities to the ground, and just stay in Italy/Northern Africa. It really fucks over the barbarians and other tribes, and gives you time to regroup.

The ERE can't really do that, and starts with like 3 hordes in their territory and war with the Sassanids, who are the other large empire.

Worship buildings need a price and tier re-balancing. I can't afford to build a 3000 Shrine to Shitmar in Altdorf 10 turns in that has a measly -4 to corruption.

Anyone else getting a bug after the last update with loading screens occasionally freezing? The progress bar will get about 90% full and then stop. Does anyone else find that Archaon et al show up way too early for the Empire?

I'm rushing about trying to conquer/negotiate various factions into confederating with me, yet the chaos hordes always show up while I've often got big chunks still left to claim.

Obviously, you don't NEED the whole Empire united, I've always beat them without too many issues, but the fact all your human rivals suddenly love you when Archaon shows up and jump into your Empire feels like it's robbing me of the challenge of unifying them, plus it detracts from Chaos as some final enemy to defeat.

I mean, Chaos shows up and starts trashing shit, but it never feels bad because the Empire was already war ridden before, they're not overcoming my nice, peaceful cities, they're battering themselves against what are essentially armed camps that have been churning out a endless line of cheap cannon fodder since turn 1.

I'd like it more if you had time to unite the Empire, build some nice civil infrastructure and engage in some minor wars with the Border Princes/Dorfs/Greenskins THEN Chaos shows up and shits on everything.

As is it, Chaos is dead in what feels like mid-game, everyone human or dwarf loves me and the Empire was united by a massive diplomatic boost caused by a game mechanic, leaving me with nothing to do really.

It feels way different from earlier total war games in which I had no issues.

Now I'm paying Empire on Hard and getting better results from autoresolves than real battles.

It feels like every faction just rolls over my infantry line.

The Empire campaign sucks dick and is arguably the hardest if you consider the plethora of bullshit both RNG and scripted the have to deal with in a province that sucks balls.

It only gets mentioned at the REALLY formal occasions. No idea why they only use Franz sometimes though. The first name of a monarch with a double name could have been used alone though.

my empire experience was pretty spot on with the help of some RP

It was actually a perfect victory in my eyes. Through diplomacy I managed to control every good faction on the map in about 120 turns. Because everyone loved me they would actually listen when I set military targets. and I never had to worry about managing any of my provinces, they were 100% happy the entire game. The only lame part about this campaign was that Karl Franz was my highest level general at level 15, Because I wasn't fighting many battles to conquer he didn't get as much xp, When I recruited balthasar I sent him right into sylvania to deal back up stirland and deal with the vampire counts.

In Rome 2 and Attila, and Warhammer, you can only move or create an army with a character general, you can't simply split some troops off and send them somewhere or whatever, you need a general every time, which can only be recruited from a city.

It's amazing how quickly the tide can turn against you. Hard Empire campaign, I made a mistake of spending time trying to be diplomatic and I didnt push forward to take care of VC until about turn 80 or 90. I had Stirland allied and I thought they would help, but as soon as I pushed to VC terrain Stirland just ran off and left me there on my own.

I was doing alright at first and got VC pushed all the way back to Castle Drakenhof being their only settlement, but they pulled a huge fat stack out of their ass. sallied out, and broke my siege (I had 2 full stacks with both LL's, demigryphons, mages, etc).

I retreated one army to Eschen and the other ran towards Zhufbar... the VC then followed and smashed Karl Franz in Eschen and just obliterated him. They spawned like another stack or two from that battle and suddenly pushed west just shitting on everything I had captured up until then because the garrisons couldnt hold out.

Now Chaos is taking Hochland from me, my diplomatic alliances are breaking because so much infighting going on between the humans, and my trade agreements with basically everyone is being dropped. Income is down and I'm having trouble recuptering and building Karl Franz's army back up fast enough to stop the VC but even if I can, they have like 4-5 full stacks now. I can't hold against that. None of my allies will come to help despite me setting war coordination targets.

I was steamrolling up until here :( Oh well, RIP

For starters, you want more Greatswords. They are your endgame line infantry. If you want halberdiers, just get 2 to cover each flank at most.

Drop the outriders. Really, really bad unit. The Empire has some of the best cavalry in the game (demigryphs), so try to field some more of those. Reiksguard are good, too, if you're broke.

Handgunners are interchangeable with Crossbowmen. Swap in handgunners when you're up against high armor enemies (chaos, dwarfs) and crossbowmen against the others. Handgunners are excellent flanking units, too.

Which hellfire artillery is it? Is it the rocket one or the minigun one? I'm not too fond of either. The rocket one is only good imo on a large hill and the minigun one takes too much set up.

In regards to those enemies;

Bretonnia rarely fields pegasus knights, so you shouldn't have to deal with it too often. If I have to leave my artillery undefended, I leave 1 shitty melee unit with them.

Chaos chariots are complete AIDS. Really powerful unit, you need to swamp it with all sorts of shit just so it can't get away, and for its initial charge, put a halberdier up front.

Beastmen units have next to no armor, and most of their units are pretty shitty (everything but bestigors and minotaurs, and maybe centigors (gw)). You can counter them pretty hard with a light wizard with the Spider Web spell that immobilizes units for like 15 seconds, giving your ranged units plenty of time to fuck up their charge and your melee units time to charge them while not being charged into themself.

Also, you may wanna do a few custom battles as Empire against AI armies with units you struggle against. I used to suck dick at chasing mounted archers, but now I handle them easily enough. I hope this helps.

Fuck yes, turned it back around! Chaos started hitting Altdorf hard, but VC came out and paid me 8 grand for peace (despite me losing, lol gg undead shitlords).

Not having to worry about VC on my flank let me pull back and focus on getting Chaos and the rebels out and away.

Then Archaon showed up and I got that huge diplomacy boost. I guess my diplo work early game finally paid off, as suddenly I was able to form a military alliance with damn near everyone (in fact I could confederate but I really dont want to deal with managing a place that big).

Even the Dwarves and Brettonia are allied with me.

I'm now doing less and less army work and I'm giving war target orders to entire factions.

If you have artillery, and they have none, you should probably just fight it out because you'll lose like no troops.

However, if you're attacking a walled settlement/capital, it's better to just have multiple armies and auto resolve, because even against shit tier armies you'll lose a bunch of troops just walking to the walls.

don't war wissenburg, confederate them asap. you will wanna go after orcs, beastmen and gifting them every now and then. also, marienburg should be your first city outside of reikland - the AI army will generally never leave the city, so declare war on them, put an army on ambush outside of eilhart and hope RNG is with you, it'll make capturing marienburg a joke.

marienburg has a unique building that gives 500 (t1) / 1000(t3) / 1500(t5) gold per turn.

The thing I like the least about Rome 2 is the arbitrary army limits that were suddenly introduced. The gameplay was pretty wonky (random capture points in battles because reasons?) and everything had a tendency to blob together in huge piles. They also had misleading gameplay previews which ticked people off massively, and then the DLC provoked even more of a negative reaction. It's been sort of fixed but it deserves the negative reputation and doesn't compare well to other total war games. Warhammer might be even more simplified but the battles are a lot more fun in my opinion.

What I usually do is:

Upgrade Altdorf barracks to t2, attack nearby secessionist army, beat it, move back into altdorf region and recruit, next turn take grunburg, force march to helmgart, capture it, delete barracks in altdorf, capture eilhart, should have a 20 stack around eilhart which is easy enough to capture marienburg.

regarding confederation, avoid confederating with elector counts the other counts hate/are at war with. you'll get a "treaties with <faction>", which makes confederating with other lords harder. I have had problems confederating with Stirland before. Wissenburg is usually my first.

I'm not very good and I imagine someone would look at this and laugh about how I lost so many, but this took everything out of me to win. I was down to just tiny units of almost no morale with a 1 hp Franz who recovered right at the border coming back to hold morale.

Once I start getting into large armies like this, I cant focus on controlling everyone and I end up with units just standing still in the middle of the battle line not fighting because they cleaned up their unit and I dont see them to push them to the next unit

Right as the first enemy line rushed me, one of the enemy lords that was flying swooped over my line and went right for Franz. I put my warpriest into the fight as well (he also was flying) to help fight with Franz, but the Lord somehow routed both. Franz ran off to the edge and recovered with 1 hp and I was able to bring him back, but only to stand behind the lines and be a leadership bonus

So, one of the pistoliers actually started attacking a unit of sword guys. I set them to skirmish and they led that unit far away and basically took them out of the fight. I dont know why they registered no kills, they got that unit to about half.

The other I admit I shamelessly hid in the forest so that if this fight went sour, which I really expected it to, they would be hidden and maybe I could scratch out a victory by just staying hidden for a long time

I dont know either, what Ive always used him for. Drop him on a unit thats giving me trouble and tie them up for the rest of the battle. Terrorgheist has come out on top 99.9% of all the times ive used him for this.

Only thing that they ever give my Terrors a bad time are giants, and even then, they can keep the giant focused and away from doing to much damage.

Heres how you play Woc. Make 3 armies as quickly as possible. You want to start at norsica (if you don't the AI is set to attack you around turn 100-150 and they spam armies). Only awaken one tribe because the awakend tribes will attack each other. If you want the legendary lord then you awaken a tribe then attack them the next turn. After dealing with norsica your 3 armies should have no trouble steam rolling through the other races. The only problem I had was tzenecth who comes turn 110-120.

it's not a big deal with newer total war games because they include garrisons but because there were none in Rome i would find most of my cities without enough men to man the walls. my only hope would be to destroy their siege engines before they could get onto the walls. it was a nice way of capturing victory even against impossible odds. now if the enemy has massively more men than you you can't use your advantage of being behind walls effectively or realistically and you're guaranteed to lose.

They are not weak, they do their job very well and are by far the easiest faction to play as against the AI.

Their infantry are pretty much unbreakable, their ranged destroy everything and if the enemy do manage to get to your quarelers then they still have to deal with fighting an archer unit that is better in melee than their own tier 1 infantry.

If you think they are underpowered you obviously have never thought against them as orcs, their dwarf warriors are like tanks compared to orc boys.

Fucker always feel like it's a flip of a coin whether he goes down or won't even get scratched (using the same tactics and units on him).
Grimgor himself aside, early dwarfs are anything but lackluster.
Then you get the late game units and just slap enemy armies around. With a few gyros focusing the artillery down your lads just facetank everything and let your own arty/ranged do the work.

Bombs have been buffed and actually do a fuckload of damage assuming you're not a retard and can drop them on massed units. Gyros with brimstone also do good missile damage but you should have 3-4 units of them focusing whatever it is you want to attack.

God damn, just defeated Archaon. That was some epic level shit. A last alliance of Dwarfs, Men of all sorts and Vampires (!) stood together at the end against the Lord of the End Times. Karl Franz was fucking around finding Ghal Maraz when the final battle went down, so it was up to the Lord I mostly kept around for baby-sitting provinces and the first two steam tanks I ever recruited to save the day.
And save it they fucking did. The final battle wound up a horrific clusterfuck, with Archaon cut down by Greatswords and an artillery crew pressed into melee, and the Chaos army fucking routing when I drove the last surviving steam tank straight into their artillery.

That was sort of the idea. Guild based troops that were peasants so weren't bound by chivalry but who had become wealthy despite the tenth share. they would protect their workshops and warehouses with well equipped if not well trained soldiers and would have more medieval versions of handguns as musketeers, infantry using lucerne hammers and have a mixture of plate and chainmail, bombards, The idea being that these forces were reliable assets to lords willing to stoop to that level. Some guild masters being legitimately concerned with serving their lords, while others plotting a peasant revolution.

It'd be a case similar to Fall of the Samurai though. where more traditional armies would benefit more from the blessing. but more of these peasant "progressive" units would decrease the effect of the blessing but add options that were normally not available.

Empire mages can only handle each wind and they channel the raw energy through themselves like retards. Elven mages can combine ALL winds of magic into devastating spells.

Wizard lord status for empire wizards is the highest prestige, but for elves it pretty much means you can do petty magic and is now ready to roll into the Hogwarts school at the white tower of Hoeth.

This is wrong. Guns in the game are very finicky and not worth it in mass since; Can't shoot over hills, past trees, past your own units etc. Only have ONE.

I'm currently playing on very hard and Gryphons with halberds are never used. They are only good against trolls and big monster units. Halberds also do next to no damage on everything else, too situational

Ignore the other guy, they are good for whittling down armored units or any unit really that doesn't have shields and your melee cavalry will never be good against mounted ranged units

Artillery doesn't matter much for Empire, go with what you like.

Only one specialty side unit, more than two and it isn't worth it. One Witch Hunter/Mele Specialist/Wizard/Battle Priest as they all serve the same function. To attack the enemy lord or break lines.

You want shield units to take initial charge and ranged attacks. Computer AI isn't smart enough to change targets to high priority unshielded units so you want your shielded infantry up front.

Your army SHOULD look like this:

4x shield units
6x melee damage units (Greatswords/Halbediers)
2x artillery of your liking
4x ranged attackers
4x cavalry

It's good advice tho. I'm on my third race campaign on very hard and things that are too specific and situational in the game like guns, line of sight, halberds, chariots, anti large and stuff of similar ilk are complete ass in PvE. The AI never builds late game high tier units and never employs the rock paper scissor units since they need a lot of skill and knowledge to use effectively. It throws lots of infantry, lots of ranged at you so you need to be prepared.

You as the player should avoid certain niche things in the game since they never work or help your bottom line. In PvP, ignore my advice but for the single player campaign, it's rock solid.

Good lords (grimgor, ungrim, archaon, khazrak, ANY lord that gets +30% weapon strength): 1 blue for 10% movement range, then all yellow until deadly onslaught, then get whatever you want. if this is a chaos lord, get tribes of chaos maxed out ASAP.

spellcasters: 10% movement range, then go for the best spells in their book (fate of bjuna for manfred, for example) then go yellow so they don't die.

I do like the vigour loss reduction. The first half of the red line generally buffs T1 and T2 units, which I don't tend to use past the early game, so I just go for the vigour loss reduction. It's very handy in sieges, as running to walls and laddering them consumes lots of energy, which is a massive penalty fighting on walls. It's also good for units that rely on charging like cavalry and fast units like minotaurs, dogs, etc.

I forgot to mention lightning strike. It's mandatory for chaos, since you won't have your armies next to each other at all times and it will save your ass constantly. It's also good for any faction that is surrounded by lots of enemies like greenskins, vampires and especially empire.

Empire has pretty much everything, but most of their units are pretty tame in turn. Still nice and they have the most expansive roster, I think.

Dorfs have the speed of a crippled turtle and are about as easy to bully. All of their ranged options are fantastic, however, and they have a couple of fairly unique units.

Vampire cunts have by far the most fun roster, with god-tier cavalry, monsters, flying monsters, infantry and magic. No ranged units, but that shit's for bitches and elves anyway. Mannfred is also by far the best LL, and the true emperor too.

A shooty army with lots of throwaway units backed up by a few specialized elite units. Dangerous but inaccurate artillery, exploiting cheap skaven slaves/clanrats like vampires use zombies to tie up units so other units get a chance to shoot them. If any units are going to be missing it's probably going to be the screaming bell and the hell pit abomination (and some of the less exciting mounts), since the screaming bell would be kind of funky to implement well in a total war setting and the hell pit abomination is a big ugly monster that's going to be lower priority than doomwheels and rat ogres. Yep, it doesn't disable any achievments either. Enjoy playing on VH without a cheating AI in combat.

Playing on Legendary however locks that option, so there is literally no reason to play on that difficulty since you get every achievment with VH anyway.

I used to always get the great weapons with a few halberds to focus monsters because I think shields are useless, but lately I pick up shields mostly because the shields make the unit look cooler and with mods can add variety and break up the formation a bit.

Great Weapons and Halberds.

Shields aren't really needed since they already have like 120 armor, and it's not like arrows or bullets can harm them.
The extra defense stats are pretty good though.

Actually it should be more noticeable on chosen. I just checked, and the halberd version has 6.0 (normal CW halberds have 4.6) attack interval, while GWs have 4.1.

It's pretty easy to just mod the Norscan tribes to never hire missile cavalry. Take a look at the field modified in the Better AI Recruitment Mod for guidance.

Fucking hell, I've been using them constantly since they're cheaper and have almost the same stats as the other units.

Very hard and everything below is laughably easy. There's pretty much no reason to strategise your end-game army compositions because, unlike you, your opponents won't fill their doom stacks with high cost units.
I literally just finished a VH Chaos campaign in which I was at war with about 10 factions and only had one unchanging Kholek stack filled with units I just felt like using, for the entirety of the campaign.
