You know that's not true. Them appearing in generations actually brought the game's score down to reviewers. Just because a bunch of audists danced around in a rat hole hotel doesn't mean the majority wants these characters back in anyway shape or form.

Sonic's fanbase is split basically into four major groups: Classic fans, 6th generation fans, modern fans, and external media fans.
It goes deeper than that but that's a really basic way to put it
Classic fans are probably the biggest group, so Mania was the correct idea
6th generation (read: Gamecube/Dreamcast/PS2/Xbox) fans want something like adventure. These are probably the smallest group since more than half of the games these fans got were trash like Shadow and 06, so Sega can get away with ignoring them, but that's debatable.
Modern fans basically like Colors and Generations more than anything but they probably also want something new to look at. We don't have enough info to know if 2017 is different enough, but it's safe to assume it's targeting those fans
External media comes in the form of the cartoons and the comics. This overlaps with all of the others and is frankly a big enough market for them to care. Boom's TV series has been successful and doesn't seem to be in any danger, but Archie comics are facing enough trouble that they could realistically lose the license all together. While comics are dying down as a whole, the fans of them are very loyal and by no means entirely negligable. Although, being completely frank, the comic fanbase is probably smaller than the adventure fanbase. If it becomes an uphill battle, better losing the comic than losing Sega's wallet.
Also I'm not even a comic fan and people need to fuck off with this no non-game/non-classic characters bullshit like it would actually make any of the external media better.

We got Sonic X and people complained. Yeah Chris WAS a massive problem in the series but still.
And Sonic Boom is a character driven story with decent writing about day to day living. It's fun, doesn't take itself too seriously and that's why it's great.

I was just working on a pokemon hack, where i put in sonic characters.
I tried doing classic sonic here, its not quite as 'natural as I would like. when you look at pokemon sprites you realise how clever the art is with the usage of just a few squares.
