Just stopped playing after about 6 hours on server posted before. Was having a blast. The server is still going, and we recently have beaten the Eye of Cthulhu and a close attempt of beating Queen Bee with the players on the server (16100 HP, lost at 600 HP)

Keep in mind the server is still vanilla and pre-hardmode.

Guys I want to get back into this game but I want to do it by building a base that is optimal beyond belief for defensive purposes, while I try to make it look as pretty as possible without compromising how optimal it is in doing so.

Is there any strategy at all one can do in building that will protect them wrong wraiths or other floaty creatures that sail through blocks?

You could build a little village on stilts using wooden beams or whatever vertically aligned background wall suits you. It's up off the ground so wraiths are a non-issue and depending on your method of entry (rope, stairs, wings, teleporter, etc) you might not be bothered by anything that walks/jumps either.

Nice looking villages don't have to be inefficient to look nice. One or two buildings could be the storage/crafting warehouses while the other places are just NPC housing, with the most frequently used NPCs located closer to the warehouses.

As far as I know, If it flies independent of blocks and can pass through blocks and it's spawn conditions are met you're fucked outside of covering your houses with outside facing traps.

I have no idea what you're referring to. In my post I was trying to say you can do this. You don't need any lava (and iirc wraiths and other enemies that move through blocks are immune to lava) and this setup is pretty safe from walking/jumping shit like zombies.

I was referring to this line, in conjunction with the image I was responding to. It has walls that are hollowed out with lava at the bottom, and you claimed that you used a house like this and all you had to do was lead the wraiths into them to fry them up. Oh, I was referring to the "putting a big room of chests at the bottom part". iirc wraiths aren't hurt by lava, so I assume the lava in the walls is merely for decoration. In my experiences, the wraiths wander into the chest room and cannot rise out of it as long as the player (or whatever they're targeting) does not move near one of the side walls.

Mobs and projectiles glitch through the blocks because collision detection doesn't work well with sloped blocks and stairs.
By the way, the bottom most stair on the outside can cause demon eyes to glitch into the storage area. I usually leave those off, since there are almost no mobs that cannot jump.

Technically, it doesn't really even matter matter if the other NPC's are there, just as long as they're not exactly where you are.

I used to have ground level housing for most of my NPC's, but I myself usually stayed upstairs in a giant warehouse.

The picture is a very dated screenshot, but it's essentially what I did for housing.

I don't have the map file anymore (which sucks since I had a few small projects going on in that map.) There ends up being more crap in the warehouse, and the Cyborg ends up moving to where the Dye Trader is, with me, since he's tough as hell and can shrug off expert alien death beams.

having a shitty ISP, using wifi instead of ethernet cords, and living far apart can all increase this

Does anyone else have issues with slowdown in singleplayer? Ever since 1.3 arrived, I've been getting periods of several seconds of slowdown once every 10-30 seconds. It's really noticeable when you're mining because you can hear the mining drop to half of its normal speed.

I'm playing on vanilla and farming pirates... does anyone else notice a bug where the flying dutchman spontaneously explodes even when it has almost full health, but even after the exploding animation it can shoot you, throw pirates, and can't be killed? And then... every once in a while it spontaneously re-appears? There was a similar bug with mothron the last time I was playing about when Moonlord came out.

There is not that much "risk" though. You just need to get back where you died and Magic Mirror out. If you got there once, then you can do it again. Unless you died right below some kind off Celestial Pillar, but even then you are bound to have enough spare equipment to get it all back.
The only problem comes from dying in lava but 90% of the items are Lava Proof anyway.
People call it tediumcore because it provides no extra challenge, just tedious Minecraft inventory, except your staff can't despawn over time, so again, no risk.
But what if the game crashes? Or your electricity cuts off? You can't predict this, and hours if not days of work are gone.
I can understand hardcore, but why tediumcore?
