Try look at some photos of people and make the face based on that. Other screenshots from your favourite waifu makers can be pretty useful too, just to see how they might have shaped a jaw or whatever.

Also don't be afraid to tweak the face often. I've been slowly working on a few characters, but each time I load them up I make more and more tweaks. Each time they look better than before.
