Alpha Centauri sucks.

Old games always sucks because it took years to develop a decent AI.
>>
>>150330936
You take that back before I nerve staple your bitch drone ass.
>>
>>150332703
Sorry to hurt your feelings, but it's true.
I spawned next to the alien faggots, they literally spent the entire game attacking me. I don't know how they kept pumping up units, so I was ALWAYS under attack.
>>
>>150332857
You want to get rid of mind worms, you have to remove fungus

Even if you do, you'll still be attacked if you pollute too much

Alpha Centauri is one of the most universally-acclaimed strategy games of all time. You are objectively wrong if you really believe it sucks. Just get gud.
>>
>>150333138
I don't mean the little bitches of The Many, I mean the ayyys introduced in Crossfire.
The worms are easily manageable, just hide in a town and let them come.
>>
>>150333238
Well no one said Alien Crossfire was that good.

If you must use it, you're better off only using the original factions.
>>
>>150333520
Well, fuck.

Are all the AIs able to spout a shitload of units anyway? I'm so used to Civ4 and Civ5 that I find Alpha Centauri a bit confusing with its "units are locked in combat until one is dead" gameplay.
>>
tfw you wanna create an individualist pacifist utopian empire

tfw individualist bonus is pretty garbage
>>
>>150333649
Some factions are better at it then others. The aliens are just straight up better than the human factions at just about everything; they only exist for people who want a deliberately asymmetrical game.

But yeah, especially on higher difficulties, the AI loves to build more units than you expect. Yang in particular.

The game is just really shallow and repetetive, and not repetetive in the fun kind like Civ is.

It's an RTS with hefty 4x influences. With a side of really well done WC3 hero units for capital ships. It's a lot of fun by oh my the learning curve is more of a cliff and it doesn't hesitate to rip your fucking nuts off even on the easy difficulties when you're new.

Friendly reminder that :
You couln't save Kharak.
Familiar of Zero's author died before he could finish it.
The Infinite War has not been completely stopped.
Age of Empires III is still a thing.
You're going to die.
Rise of Legends will never get a sequel explaining what the Cuotl gods were.
Battle Realms II will never come out.
RTS casualized so much that Age of Empire IV will likely have easy controls for consoles.
Due to Arrakis getting terraformed, there are no more source of Spice.

It may not be the best city in the game in 2000AD, but that shit is going to propel me forward so much, I don't think it will even be a challenge to dominate the game with this start.

Jiangshi are sentient and often retain their living memories though, and if you own the controller tag to match the control tag on her head you can literally make her do anything, even rewrite her personality or memories. Not sure about the MGE version but that's the mythical version.
>>
>>150388597
I don't think you needed the granary. It would have been better to buy the salt and hills when you settled. I don't know why you are improving the horse and making those useless farms instead of improving the salt.

>feral Jiangshi
You mean the ones that hung around people for so long they've gotten enough Yang energy to move on their own or the ones who are animal souls in human corpses? I'm not sure what a feral jiangshi refers to here.

>Wikipedia page
The Wikipedia page has lot of bullshit like:
>A person injured by a jiangshi is infected with the "jiangshi virus" and gradually changes into a jiangshi over time, as seen in the Mr. Vampire films.
That's lifted from western Vampire tales, not Chinese folklore. There's no such thing as transmitting jiangshi-ness in traditional folk tales that I've heard of, although I guess if you've had so much Yang drained out of you that you're basically a walking corpse, it'd be effectively the same thing (although if you're left alone you'll go back to normal).

Also
>Jiangshi need Yang energy to move
>semen is literally almost pure Yang
>there is theological basis for using semen to power Jiangshi
>>
>>150390032
>Aren't you aware that myths change with time?
And I'm referring to the ones still distinct from Western vampires, the ones most people understand you refer to when you say Jiangshi in China proper instead of a western colony.
>at first they needed Qi then it changed to Yang
No. They never needed pure Qi. They needed YANG Qi. They have too much Yin Qi.

Wut.

Even my closest friends that I had research agreements, migration treaties and defensive pacts and shit just went "fuck it" and dropped all treaties and they now consider me the biggest threat ever even though I have never done anything even remotely aggressive towards them. On the contrary, I helped those assholes in their wars of conquest and I helped them rid the Scourge from their empires and now they hate me?

Why do they want to make an enemy of me? Why destroy such great relations for the sake of these puny slaver motherfuckers?

We fought wars against multiple other slavers to make them stop atrocities, my empire single-handedly annihilated the Prethoryn Scourge from the galaxy and this is our reward for all the good I've done.

We, at the Federation of United Empires do not conquer or subjugate. We unite people. We unite the misguided empires and rid the galaxy of evil.

Joan of Arc literally gave the throne to Charles to the point where the reason the English tried to find a theological basis to her being a demon was because they wanted to prove Charles wasn't a divinely chosen leader but someone who sold his soul to a witch aka a servant of Satan.

>Samurais only get bonus damage against other castle units, right?
They also have 25% faster attack speed and obliterate most other dangerous infantry. Archers literally counter ALL infantry they unironically get attack bonuses towards half of them along with range bonuses, the reason the Huscarl is so fucking dangerous is because it's an infantry unit that specifically counters anti-infantry units.
>>
>>150428237
We all know that on relase Civ VI will be half-done, and will only be a proper game after 3 DLC's that are priced €59.99 each.

And that is the best case scenario. Seeing as a fiasco such as Beyond Earth exists, maybe that's too optimistic. It's not exaggerating to say that Firaxis is going down the Acitivision-Blizzard route, but let's hope I'm wrong.

the only love that matters is that you love yourself and are true to your empire. Do what is necessary.
>>
>>150384814
It actually makes sense, because it gives Hyperlanes a drawback like the other methods.

Warp Drawback: Slow cooldowns from making jumps makes jumping into an ambush a death sentence, and it's harder to jump away if the tide turns against you

Wormhole Drawback: the generators are a weak point; if your opponent sends a flanking fleet to take out your generators while the main fleet is tied up, you can end up stranded and unable to stop them from invading planets your fleets can no longer jump to.

Hyperspace drawback: Other players can predict likely routes you'll take, and build defenses accordingly.

This makes it (in theory) so that your fleets should be built with your travel method in mind- Wormhole nations should have defense stations anywhere they have a generator, and a small, fast defense fleet that's always in reserve and ready to deal with raiding fleets; Warp nations should have ships built to take a beating, and use their maneuverability to avoid traps whenever possible- or use singular corvettes for scouting ahead of the main fleet; Hyperlane nations should have fleets built to overwhelm and shatter defenses, with weaponry like Autocannons that turn things like FTL-traps from a bad thing into an advantage for them- as their cooldown is the shortest, they'll start shooting faster than a fleet of the other two types would be able to.

Against AI, it's all moot because of Talcyon battleships, but it might work as intended in multiplayer.

the replacement for happiness, basically, but city based?
its pretty complicated. certain tiles give amenities, like rivers. so do luxuries. so do certain buildings. if you dont have enough amenities in a city to keep citizens happy, growth is stunted. however, housing is another factor (also gained through things like farms, and rivers) that limit growth. so it means that you can make a lot of cities like civ 3/4, but making cities that arent by resources are going to have awful growth.

>how is alpha centauri (paraphrased)

It is old. It hasn't aged well--the UI is a little clunky, graphically it obviously looks the part, and you might have to get clever to get it to run on a 64-bit system. I have the GoG version and it works fine for me.

The civs are decently unique, the techs are cool and their blurb is voiced-over, as is a lot of other quoted text.
But it really makes up for its age with game mechanics and the indigenous life of Planet. At its core, pretty much Civ 2. or 3, it came out between them Citizens consume food per turn; you get X food from tiles; shields are minerals instead; blah blah.
Technologies are not explicitly researched, you set a focus out of four fields--you can also research into ALL fields, which to my understanding means you will get whatever is the easiest tech available to discover.
There are...not really civ bonuses but think of the societies and economic policies from Civ 4. That kind of system exists, which effect specialized bonuses for your colony which you unlock from research.

You can customize units, upgrade and such so can have units that are completely purpose-built. The combat isn't really more involved than 'dudes diceroll at each other' but its at least enjoyable to watch. There are flying units.

The AI is decently smart, but this is a game from the 90's so don't expect too much.

Now I'll actually talk about Planet and the life on it. There's this fungal growth that pretty much covers the entire world which spits out mindworms and other horrifying creatures that try to break your shit. There's a moral/mental system for combat which adds an extra layer to fighting much later in the game, but you are immediately involved with it because of early weak attacks by these mindworms.

also the lore is fucking brutal.

tl;dr it's civ in space with hostile fauna and you can do cool shit.

UI is very clunky. I've got quickly overwhelmed and left the game to play itself. Apparently, pop-up window asking you what to build was not yet invented. So I had to set governors, they build many units I can't manage by hand. Soon enough I'm reduced to observer.

No

Digital deluxe edition comes with four DLCs, yes. But Monty comes with any pre-order and will be free after 3 months. We still think with Deluxe Edition you'll have 22 civs, including Monty. So this means some of the four DLCs that come with Deluxe Edition are not civs, but something else.

you have to research mathematics and build a courthouse to get rid of the annexation penalty
I'd usually raze it and resettle it if it's early game or leave it puppeted, since courthouses cost 5gpt in maintenance
if you must annex it, though, leave it puppeted until you have enough gold to buy the courthouse or production to build it quickly so you're not stuck with the unhappiness

Also starting with a scout instead of a warrior and being able to upgrade it straight to composite bow is really good too.

But this isn't Doom, senpai. This is a video game series that's known for shitty character designs but stellar-indepth gameplay. Only Civ 5 had actually good character designs, which seems to be the only game that most of the "muh designs" complainer have played and/or seen. They're keeping the good gameplay parts from the predecessors but changing the designs like they always do, so what?
And what is wrong with targeting younger audience if the gameplay will stay amazing like usual? Older players will stop playing sooner or later due to age and/or time commitments so building a new player base is a smart move by the team. But hey, let's pander to the dying player base.

I need a bit of help with Stellaris. Originally, I had pirated the 1.something version, back before the Clarke update. Then a few days ago, I bought it legit, so I just moved over my pirated install into my steam folder to save time downloading.

Now, when I try to play with my buddy, it says that my version in the multiplayer screen is completely different. It should say 20fe (and it does say so in the main menu and launcher), but my buddy tells me that it says something stupid like ab28 in the multiplayer menu. Anyone have any ideas how to fix it? I've reinstalled, I've uninstalled every mod, I've disabled the DLC.

That's the least important thing for the continuing survival of the human race.

Yep yep yep. Introducing permanent changes on a virgin biosphere, even if it is thought to be barren, is not something to be taken lightly.

That has nothing to do with ethics though. At most it's something that shouldn't be done casually without considering the possible scientific consequences. Biospheres are of interest to nobody but scientists, who are almost as far removed from ethics as mathematicians.

Firstly, it is possible to raze city-states (not sure about capitals).
Secondly, when first conquering a city, the city will be occupied until declaration of peace. During peace negotiation, it is decided whether occupied cities are returned to the owner, or are kept by the conqueror.
Thirdly, taking cities during war gives warmonger penalties. These penalties are erased if the ciy is returned during peace negotiations, or doubled if kept after peace negotiations.
Fourthly, while occupied, cities will be less productive (not sure if this is only a production penalty, or a penalty to other yields as well)
Fifthly, conquering city states in the early game nets no warmonger penalty.

Right so it's literally a problem scientists would care about. Even philosophers don't care beyond 'what is life', and that wouldn't help them that much.

-Tobacco is a luxury resource
-Any card can go in the wildcard government policy slot
-Promoting a unit completely heals the unit but also ends its turn. Promotions can be saved for a strategic heal but no more XP is earned while it's saved.
-Barbarian camps near horses will spawn cavalry units
-During map generation one continent is created for every 2 civs. Multiple continents can share the same landmass.
-Repair action does not use a builder charge, but does end its turn
-City founding order is not static. Only the first city name is the same every time.
-Pillaging improvements/districts provides yields based on the type of improvement/district pillaged (i.e. pillaging a campus will give you science)
-Hills provide elevation to shoot over obstacles
-There is only anarchy when switching back to a previously used government. No penalty for switching to a new government
-Sean Bean will be voicing all tech and civic quotes, plus will be voicing wonder movies
-Civ unique districts are roughly 1/2 the cost of normal districts
-Pantheons do not become progressively more expensive as more are founded
-You can levy allied CS militaries to take control of their units.
-City states will provide yield bonuses to districts based on alliance level and CS type (i.e. Science CS will provide +science to the campus)
-Still no civilian stacking
-Unit purchase price increases the more units of that type you rushbuy
-Growth slows dramatically as you approach max housing (i.e. if you're at 4/5)...still unknown what happens when you hit max housing.
-Ancient/Classical units are not as expensive to maintain as more modern units
-Bonus resources can be harvested by builders for a production boost (removes them from the tile like forests)
-Fresh water gives more housing than salt water
>>
>>150553325

That's not true, Arumba literally said the opposite.
It heals it for 50 HP and drains 2 movement points.

Oracle
+1 culture +1 faith
+1 great person point to all great people
"Patronage of Great People cost 25% less faith" whatever that means
must be built on a hill

Great Library
+2 science
+1 Great Scientist point
2 writing works slots
"Receive a boost to all ancient and classical era techs."
Must be built on flat land adjacent to a campus district with a library.
Unlocked from a civic, rather than a tech.
