Old one that died. Worked pretty well then suddenly got a huge delay to input making drawing on it basically impossible. Eventually stopped registering altogether.

I've been trying to figure out an answer to one of the more persistent SR questions. I think it's generally agreed that on high difficulties, the best unit is either Natori or Omachi, but ignoring Omachi's difficulty of obtain, which one of them is actually better?

Unfortunately, I've hit a few snags:

1) How does Omachi do against the Demon Army in 5 Star? I've been thinking about their magic units, and I've realised that they've probably got something like 8 Int hidden, so I'm wondering if they can tank Omachi. Heck - do normal units get a hidden Int buff in 5 Star?
2) On average, how many troops does Omachi join with? It seems to be effected by your troop size, so would 2k be a good assumption for her realistic maximum? The highest I've ever recruited her on in a 5 Star run was around 1.5k.
3) Assuming that #1 isn't an issue and that #2 is true, is this a correct calculation of a realistic figure for Omachi's max damage in a castle?
2,000 (assuming she hits at the damage cap) * 1.5 (Skill Modifier for Large Lighting) * 0.9 (estimate of Battlefield Effect) = 2,700. I suppose the most debatable part of that calculation is assuming that she damage caps, is that a good or bad assumption, generally speaking?

Totally forgot to mention that this post was in two parts...

4) If my figure of 2,700 is correct, then what does that say for the damage she does as a percentage of the enemy troop size? Loading up my saves and checking how many troops the enemy has on average in late game 5 Star gives me very mixed results, since their troop size is a function of my own. So if I'm assuming Omachi is at 2k, if 8k a good figure for the average enemy troop size? I'm tempted to be generous and go to 6k.
5) If 2.7k damage on stacks of 6k (or even 8k) is realistic, does that even mean that Omachi wins? A given attack's on Battle Rating is inversely proportional to the damage already done in the battle, so if one of these two would get an attack off before the other, that's likely to be very significant (not to mention, the earlier attack will decrease the enemy's troop size and hence their effect on the rating).
6) So, which one of them is faster? Is there any easy way to test it? Omachi is likely to move before Natori (Natori is an 8 Spd and Omachi is a 7, but Omachi being a Diviner puts her one speed tier ahead of Natori), but Miko Storm 2 has less prep time than Large Lighting. Speed buffs are also likely to shake things up.
7) How significant is the fact that Dousan puts in a lot of work for Natori?
8) How significant are Miko Dance/Wind and All-Guard Shikigami?

Yes, to the best of my awareness it does (check the Jap Wiki if you want, they tend to have info on that sort of stuff), but if you're pulling that off in a 5 Star run, you're doing something wrong.

SR - are there any general tactics for dealing with hit-all enemies? Despite having beat the game several times, I've drawing a blank on how I dealt with fuckers like Omachi, the DA mages, Natori, Souun, strong generic diviners, Hara Shouji, Ran (even without Suzaku), Chinu, Seigan or even Otomo Sourin. I want to say that the solution really is something as simple as "don't fight them", but looking at that list, some of them are pretty unavoidable.

Kill them first
Interrupt their preperations

I think insta-kills are my usual tactic, but Foot Soldiers, plot importance and sheer randomness usually fucks that.

Hmm, only valid against enemies who've only got one move and even then you've got to time it perfectly. But ok, you've eliminated Natori, Hara Shouji, Suzaku Ran), Chinu and Seigan.

Enemy Foots can counter that (unless you're using Suzume as something other than an Assassin bot for some reason), but ok, I'll give you Omachi, Souun, generics Diviners, and non-Suzaku Ran.

So, that leaves just the DA mages and Sourin. I'd like to say they could all be insta-killed, but that misses out the (non-Demon King) Shouguns. What do you do with them?

Interesting find. I've been fucking around with hacks to see how many Initial Battle Rating it takes to beat the castle advantage.

All of my units in pic related have Initial Time Advance, as do 2 of their units, while the other 4 have Initial Battle Rating.

What do we notice? I've won, despite the meter being bang on the middle. In short - Alicesoft actually did a good job programming this, I always assumed that the enemy wins on a 50/50, but it seems like they did the sensible thing and made it the defender's win.

Most interestingly, the following team is LITERALLY INVINCIBLE if you're defending a castle:
4 Initial Time Advance
1 Initial Battle Rating with the Underworld Clock
1 Initial Battle Rating

The castle advantage negates enemy 4 IBRs while my 2 commanders with IBR negate the other two enemy commanders' IBRs, adding up to negate all of the enemy IBRs and putting the meter bang on the middle - my win.

No, because there's no 'initial time recovery' skill, all of the moves with that effect requires a turn to use, which they'll never have since 4 Initial Time Advances+the Underworld Clock instantly wipes out all 25 turns.

So I'm playing Sengoku rance on my second playthrough and I managed to rape yukihime and immediately afterwards Uesugi declares war on me.

IX is pretty much a VN with some battles, and those battles basically consist just of spotting and killing your opponents, which is not tactical enough for a SRPG.

IX was a much bigger disappointment for me than Quest. Since it was a country focused title I was expecting another epic installation for the series on par with VI and Sengoku but instead I got a fairly average too serious story that severely lacked usual random antics of Rance or any humor in general which for me is one of the most crucial aspects of the series. The only saving graces of IX for me are heroines related events and gorgeous art of Orion.

Quest was a fun enough game for me even way back when it just came out and didn't had any updates. Yes it was flawed and blatantly incomplete but it was the first new Rance title in 6 years and I had a lot of fun playing it for over 100 hours in vanilla form and then for over 100 hours more after starting it again from scratch when Magnum came out. Different anon here, but Quest does have some aspects to it's grinding that makes it more bothersome than your usual grinding game. Like the limited uses for skills so you need to keep exiting and reentering quests to grind and the level limit of quests where characters over it get reduced amount of XP.

The only two aspects that make Quest's gameplay notably different from an average JRPG are limited number of attacks that a character can make per quest and level dropping after being fucked. Given the number of playable characters some kind of limiter that makes you to use more characters is necessary and what they have there is working just fine. Also they made level resetting much more milder in Magnum and getting back lost exp wasn't that big pain for me to begin with. There are much worse kinds of grind out there.

I agree, IX developed Helman much less that VI Zeth or SR JAPAN. Zeth got whole new government characters, Pentagon and Ice Flame members to mention some, JAPAN from 6 or 7 characters in KR went to few dozens in SR. Then IX is game in Helman which focuses on characters outside of that country; many characters from KR don't appear in IX, and many of them are simply killed during the game.

As for Quests it's gameplay was somewhat lacking, I would call it simply mediocre. Characters are not balanced, the item pool is rather small, and the whole class system that is also used in IX is simply badly designed and doesn't suits Rance World. I really hope that they will not use it in X.

They were needed to unlock CGs. Also I think that one or two of those CGs quest were required to progress the story. Perhaps grinding to 35 level for second time wasn't that bad, but doing that after few mororuns (and exp needed grew each time) and at higher level made it much longer. I don't think that vanilla Quest had places to get that much exp. Anyway, grinding in Quest is simple boring and tedious, if exploring in dungeon crawler isn't fun then something is done wrong.
