No excuse for dead at 152 edition.

Do you have a question about a Japanese visual novel or a translation of it?
/vn/ is ready to answer it. We are not them.

stupid thought that may already have been done - story focused around four characters, you choose one to play at the start, and the actions of the other three are based on the most recent playthrough you made controlling that character. so the whole game is a puzzle, where you have to work out how to set up all the characters to work together through different playthroughs.
>>
>>149521190

How dare you sleep while /evn/ is on it's deathbed
>>
>>149521524
In order for multiple playthroughs to function together as a puzzle, the routes would have to be fairly short. I/O went on for ages, I never finished it, can't even remember how many parts I got through anymore.
>>
>>149523394
You're also inherently making it so that there's going to be a lot of repetition by the player unless it's a linear sort of puzzle, which defeats the purpose

It sounds cool but you're probably better off just having dialogue change instead of requiring it to finish the game
>>
>>149523394
Might be more fun to do as a yaoi/yuri jam game with just two characters, who the player is trying to get together. Each time you play you switch protagonists and inch the timeline a little bit closer to makeouts.

It's a different Genre but you should play and then research the development of Maniac Mansion for a great way to have multiple characters with unique gameplay roles in an interactive story.
In particular, the short playtime of a succesful run in comparison to the large amounts of time feeling your way through the mansion with the different characters and working out how they fit into the overall progression.

like, intentionally killing yourself because you really want to die and it keeps not working, or because you live in a setting where you already know death doesn't count? like, if you're living in some kind of MMORPG and you kill yourself just for faster travel back to your home base, or in some scifi where you kill yourself to get a fresh body...

Getting killed accidentaly sounds less emo-ish, and could be even comical. Unless you are going for DRAMA, of course.

>>149591354
ah, so you don't mean that they really die all the time, just that there are bad ends where they die.

>>149591434
It's not drama. You are a cute character in a cute world, and the goal is to get an ending where your cute character does not die. Accidental death is less emo-y, but I feel like suicide would give the character more of a personality.

I am pretty sure that 16:9 is the most common aspect ratio. If you look at the steam hardware survey stats, 1920 x 1080 is the most common resolution, followed by 1366 x 768 (common resolution for laptops), both of which are 16:9

Here's the link to the hardware survey: http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey

Oh, and the other most common resolution besides 1920x1080 and 1366x768 is 3840x1080, which is the desktop resolution for people with a multi-monitor setup with two 1920x1080 monitors. So presumably over half the people who play this game will be doing it on a 1920x1080 display. (Btw this is my resolution also)

>>
>>149597853
Gotcha, but you kinda helped me discover something as well. I was opening Unity just now to add 1920x1080 and such, since when I opened Harem Protag on my lappy that option didn't appear, oddly. So I went to check on the settings to find that I did add 16:9, and that 1920x1080 should be one of those options. So if it appears for you and not for me, that means that only supported resolutions appear in the drop-down menu. It seems kinda silly but its good to know so that I don't do bonkers about why its missing in the future, thank you for the (albiet accidential) help lol.

>>
>>149594249
Murder mysteries can be tricky, especially the ongoing kind where multiple people die, because you have to deal with the questions of 'why aren't the police handling this' and 'how is everyone going on with their lives'.

The usual somewhat-lazy writer approach is to lock everyone in a confined space for some reason, so they can't get away from the killer until they solve the crime, and the police can't get in. The REALLY lazy writers just don't care at all.

Rarely do you see anyone bother setting the story somewhere that the police are known to be corrupt and won't do anything without being bribed, which makes it much easier for the protagonists to take matters into their own hands

So, this may not be the same thing you're experiencing, but I've had issues with the Unity launcher when testing games on my laptop when I was trying to figure out why my games always ran at 10FPS despite me having a relatively beefy laptop.

If you have both integrated and dedicated graphics (as many modern laptops do), the Unity launcher for some reason defaults to using integrated graphics rather than actually running with your graphics card (pic related). And depending on your video settings (NVIDA control panel or whatever the equivalent is for AMD users) it will affect the behavior of the launcher.
>>
>>149597386
From the Steam forum it looks like it has lingering errors it throws out. You also can't save during certain segments of the game, which is annoying.

Some people just don't want to write such an overly cynical setting. That's also a pretty lazy and easy reason why the police would not get involved.

>setting the story somewhere that the police are known to be corrupt and won't do anything without being bribed
What are some places where a reader will see the name and know that the police in that location are corrupt and useless?
>>
>>149610825
Didn't mean to imply that's how it should be done, just that it's an option I don't see tried often.

However, if you have a serial killer taking out the cast one by one, your setting can't believably be anything but dark.

But you can code it?
I think WW shared the code on Lemma.
>>
>>149613695
What is there to code? Just make two different versions, and use those versions at different times. I mean, you could code in some kind of night filter or something, but if making separate night sprites is easy enough I don't see much difference in effort.
>>
>>149613579
It's not too hard to do. We did it for our game and you're basically making a new image in the shape of your character sprites, making it a solid color, then lowering the opacity.
>>
>>149613695
Oh, that would be even better. I'll take a look for it.
>>
>>149614021
Well, it could help your game to weight less.

What are pros and cons for making an episodic vn? I don't have the funds to do a full series, so I'd use the profits to help develop the later chapters.
>>
>>149614248
That's rarely an issue worth worrying about these days, although I suppose it depends a bit on your particular audience and distribution method.
>>
>>149614824
Cons are that dys-sys killed episodic VNs and your sales will not be that great.

>I don't have the funds to do a full series, so I'd use the profits to help develop the later chapters.
Listen here, you little shit. This, right there, should tell you everything you need to know.

You can't afford to make the full series. People worry that the series will never be completed, so they don't buy into it. You don't get the sales figures you hoped for on episode one, so you drop it and don't finish the series. Anyone who DID buy into episode one hates your guts and now hates anyone else who tries to make an episodic game in the future.

It happens with such regularity that people practically had heart attacks when Telltale started to release episodic games and actually finish them. This was almost totally unheard of.

If you can't afford to make the full series, make a standalone game, make a demo and do a kickstarter, investigate other funding methods. But DON'T start an episodic series hoping it will be self-funding, that's setting you and the readers up for disaster.
>>
>>149614248
I don't think most evns have enough art assets for that to be an issue. Use RPA extractor and see what's in the art folder in some random evns. What you find might surprise you.
>>
>>149615062
Sales can really drop off after the first episode too. Even a famous JVN like Higurashi has lost major numbers between its 3 current chapter releases.
>>
>>149615195

Even thought it's been delayed, I don't see Tao dropping Toko. I could see it turn into a light novel type deal or webcomic though. He might keep it as a vn but have to crowdfund the rest of the chapters, which might be why he delayed it to get his lingering crowdfunding project out of the way first.
>>
>>149616770
I don't believe that for a moment. Sudden delays on the last one and declaring it episodic when he was hard up for money after losing his job? I bet you he was working on the parts right up to the second they released and called it an experiment to try and save face.
>>

Are episodes okay if each episode is a self contained complete story that doesn't leave on a cliffhanger?
>>
>>149617297

At that point what makes it episodic and not a series?
>>
>>149617392
That's just semantics, you don't say a TV show isn't episodic just because all the episodes are self contained.
>>
>>149617392
This. Making a game even sound episodic could hurt sales, so creating a standalone that can become a series later is a better idea.
>>
>>149617297
Are there unsolved mysteries? Is there an overarching plot that isn't resolved?

If yes, then it's shit. When I start a story, I expect resolution, not "to be continued never" even if it doesn't explicitly end on a cliffhanger.
>>
>>149617171
It delayed longer than that. Excuses.
>>
>>149617653
This.

Resolve all plot details before ending your VN or I will despise you.
>>
>>149617528
The term is tainted among the playerbase, so it's best to avoid the term "episodic".
>>
>>149617528

TV shows are rarely completely self contained. Most of them require some sort of knowledge to "Jump in".

When I think stand alone, I think something like the Final Fantasy.
>>
>>149617957
Well I doubt anon means each VN will have an entirely new setting and cast of characters.
>>
>>149617297
Don't call them episodes then. Call it a game and the next one a sequel.

It is okay to leave a few mysteries unanswered as a sequel hook, as long as the primary plot of the game did come to a conclusion.
>>
>>149618082
When I think of a series, I think of something like Adventure Time where I can miss the show for weeks, watch a random episode and still know enough to enjoy what's going on.
>>
>>149618712
But adventure time would be "episodic" in a TV sense, as that word is usually thrown at less plot centered series with episodes being mostly self contained.
>>
>>149618785
So to be a true "series" it can't have an overaching plot at all and every episode has to be entirely self explanatory? Sounds like Uncle Grandpa.

I think an in-game encyclopedia would work well with universes that have deep lore.

In this case the game doesn't even have ero, so it's not like there's gross hetero sex for the yuri player to feel repulsed by. And no, it's not enough for them to change pronouns, you need to write an entirely separate MC and have the love interests interact with her differently than they do the male MC.

How commonly do you play games where the protagonist is fixed and:
- not your gender?

(I'm not accusing you of never doing those things. However, there are a large number of gamers who freak the fuck out at having to play a girl or a gay.)
>>
>>149621165
Seems to be too minor to make much of a fuss over. Someone wants H. That's nice. Someone wants H of everything, whether there's any romance in it or not. And Steam customers LOVE to claim that you're losing sales by not doing whatever bullshit is in their mind at the time.
>>

I'm a dude and have played alot of games with female protagonists. As long as she's interesting and the story's good it doesn't bother me. Plus I like yuri which definitely helps.
>>

Almost always, almost always, depends on whether the game is romantic or not.

I vastly prefer BL to otome, but if a game features no romance at all, I'd rather have a cute male protag than a female protag I can identify with.

Rarely, but that's just because yaoi and otome are generally not my cup of tea, I'll still play one if I've heard it's very good.

Race, otoh... It depends on whether you count standard anime characters as being asian or not, I guess. I don't encounter a lot of non-white protagonists in the kind of games I play.

Most VNs don't show actual relationships, they just show the lead up to the relationships and end there. Art school means absolutely fucking nothing. Most art schools require little more out of you than following instructions and doing your best. You can learn things at art school, but you get out of it what you put into it and everything can be learned for free on one's own.

One website says the average is 200 wpm. Several others say the average is 300 wpm. I don't know how good the sourcing for any of that data is, though. Even if you take 200 as the average and agree that many people do not read anywhere near 300 wpm, it should be obvious that many people DO. The average /evn/ dev has a higher reading speed than the average random human.

>>149668995
No, I wouldn't be surprised at all. However, that doesn't mean they didn't read the story, or that they blindly mashed space all the time like an achievement hound.

Parts that interest you stick in your head better. Parts that you don't care about go in one eye and out the other.

>>

Okay so apparently you have a very specific definition of 'read' which you don't think most people live up to.

I'm sorry your players aren't taking sufficient time to bask in your deathless prose.

>>A character was racist, so the author must be too.

>>
>>149671061
If people read your vn and took a test after to see if they remembered important events, would they likely get good grades? If they don't then they didn't really read it. What's the point of reading something if you don't even remember what you read? You make it sound like someone can just skim a vn, not get the important information and say that they "read" it.
>>

>>149671564

Oh boy, I hate this kind of thinking. It means we can't have flawed characters because either the author shares the flaw, or it makes the character "problematic" and "did they REALLY have to be like that?"
>>
>>149672252
Didn't he die recently?

>>
>>149671893
>If people read your vn and took a test after to see if they remembered important events, would they likely get good grades? If they don't then they didn't really read it.

That is your opinion. If that's not how the majority of players feel, however, what's the point?

Like, I can argue that someone who played a shmup all the way to the end on easy difficulty didn't really play it. And in terms of being able to discuss how good the components of its game design are, this is true. They haven't experienced every facet of the game, they haven't truly mastered the challenge that the game was trying to present. But they still played the game, and they can still say that it took them X hours to get to the end.
>>
>>149671564
Not EVERY one. Some are capable of understanding flawed characters. (Especially if the writer takes the effort to make it clear that any single character's viewpoint is not meant to be objectively true.)

It is a common flaw among certain kinds of people, though. I'm not sure if they really have trouble grasping the concept of author/character separation or if they willfully ignore it so they can have more fun lambasting the terrible, terrible sin of the game.
>>
>>149672070
arsenixc
>>
>>149672893
People are taught reading skills in school. Either they have a poor grasp on them, or simply ignore them after they get out of school, but they aren't reading properly. Since you can gauge reading skills accurately with testing, it's not something subjective like playing a game.
>>
>>149672893

How many of JP's reviews have him blaming devs for missing things he never read?

Reading comprehension is actually important to understanding what you're reading. Most confusion from comes from people skipping important scenes.
>>
>>149673149
What exactly are you trying to achieve, other than continuing to defensively argue that everyone who says your game is short didn't really read it?

Yes! You're probably correct that people who finished your game at a high speed did not memorise every passage! So.... what, exactly?

If the same players say one game is 1-2 hours long and other games are 6-8 hours long, does it actually matter that the 1-2 hour game could be stretched out to 4 if they'd read every single word aloud and meditated on its meaning? It's still short.
>>
>>149673398
Read >>149673171
When people read too quickly they miss important plot points, character moments, and foreshadowing. They then say the game was confusing when really they suck at reading.
>>
>>149673171
Yes, reading comprehension is important to understanding what you're reading and some people aren't good at that. This is a flaw in a reviewer, and is worthy of his reviews being criticised by people who did understand the story.

However, as a creator you have to face the fact that a lot of your readers are idiots.

>>149673171
>How many of JP's reviews have him blaming devs for missing things he never read?

I remember being sulky when anonl criticised one character's route for being completely pointless and unrelated to the main plot, then complained about something in the main plot "coming out of nowhere" when it was explained in great detail in the "pointless" route.

>This story resonates with people who can personally sympathize with the characters, what faggots.
>>
>>149675605
It's not just that it resonates with people who can personally sympathise, it's that if you DON'T personally sympathise (and I don't even mean if you're not gay, because plenty of gay people didn't have that specific kind of experience) the story is very confusing and unfulfilling.

There's not a lot of plot, and much of what's going on is left intentionally obtuse and only hinted at. If you click with the mindset of the characters, it's a poignant emotional experience. If not, it's a short and shallow pile of nonsense that doesn't answer any of your questions.
>>
>>149675605
Was WKTD any good? The plot sounded interesting but the dialogue looked very cringy so I never touched it.
>>
>>149676142
Why is it a problem if it doesn't appeal to everyone? If you're not one of the people it appeals to that's fine and explains why you did not like it, but that doesn't mean it's a flaw in the game itself.
>>
>>149675605
I know people who grew up as non-Christians and read this and just couldn't get into it at all. It was just confusing for them.
>>
>>149676186

I never played it but "People can sympathize with these characters, but I can't so I hate it, and the devs who made this should feel bad." is the kind of shit JP loves to write.
>>
>>149676309
It has a target audience sure, but it's still unclearly written and vague. Not to mention that many people say it's amazing simply because it has LGBT themes, not based on the game's actual content outside of that.
>>
>>149676186
I haven't read it, but I think /evn/ cringes way too easily. Would you give me prime example of that dialogue, so I can decide if I praise your keen insight or laugh at you?
>>
>>149676309
You still don't seem to understand what I'm saying, let me see if I can explain it a different way.

Imagine you discover a fanfic for a series you've never heard of. You try to read it, but you can't make sense of what's happening in the story, because so much background isn't explained or even hinted at, since the audience was expected to be fans of the series who would already know all that stuff. You finish the story, reading the events of who does what to whom, but you have no understanding of the emotional significance, because you didn't know that X was Y's estranged brother and the story never told you. The whole thing falls flat for you.

That's sort of what WKTD was like for many people. They see the events happen but they don't understand how they're supposed to be meaningful, because they weren't helped to understand the viewpoints of the characters. Only people who through their own backgrounds already resonated with those characters 'got it'.

Is that necessarily horrible? No, but some feel it could have reached a lot more readers if more effort had been made to draw them into the story.

So why did you read the fanfic for a series you've never read. What a dumb comparison. A story doesn't need to resonate with everyone. I just think it's okay to make a story that doesn't have a broad appeal, but will resonate strongly with a certain set of people.
>>
>>149677093
Reminder that authors are supposed to imitate speech patterns, most of them are too annoying to write 1:1.
>>
>>149677219
It doesn't explain: its set up, certain plot points that are introduced, or even the endings. Even the people who did like it usually had no idea for sure what was happening in the story. But 10/10 it has atmosphere and LGBT feels.
>>
>>149677517
I haven't even actually played it, but sure, those are actual flaws. "It didn't personally appeal to me therefore it's bad" is not.
>>
>>149677219
>Why did you do a thing in an obvious hypothetical example? God you're dumb.

If the game were clearly labeled 'This game will make no sense to you unless: ' then there would be fewer confused readers.

Flaws are rarely objective. Writing using dense and technical vocabulary is only a flaw if it's aimed at an audience that can't be expected to understand it.
>>
>>149677687
The argument was that it was shallow because it relies on the reader to fill in all the blanks for themselves instead of the writer having to explain shit. That was JP's main argument. He obviously didn't like the premise, but his argument over the execution of it was valid.
>>
>>149677093
Hmmm...
I see your point if you take that line on it's own. However, it probably doesn't sound bad once you are playing the game because you'll get used to speech patterns and overall tone. At least it doesn't strike me as outright ridiculous, like that other VN someone posted here a few weeks ago. The one with the 'Lapislazuli gleam' and the 'ambrosia smell'. That one was cringy beyond redemption.

Fiction is a great tool for learning.
WKTD is a terrible bit of fiction for learning from because it doesn't explain shit.

Obviously it's annoying if your fiction sits you down and lectures you, but fiction can immerse you in a situation and show you the good and bad sides of things, play out the possible consequences of different arguments, etc.

Show, don't tell, on a conceptual level. Instead of just telling you why a thing is bad, it can show you. Hopefully without dropping an anvil on your head.

Someone got a copy of the game in a bundle and freaked out about the title being problematic. They wanted it removed from the bundle and Steam unless the title was changed. They harrassed the dev on Steam and twitter and only stopped when the dev agreed to again onto the title to clarify its meaning, which the dev planned to do anyway due to people previously misinterpreting the title. They also tried to discredit anyone who said the title was fine as-is. I forget if that thread was ever deleted on the Steam forum for the game.

I grew up apatheist(my parents aren't religious, so it just never came up in my life), and I enjoyed WKTD.

>>149676627
The key to potentially enjoying WKTD is realizing that the supernatural elements are completely irrelevant, which is difficult to do if someone tries to sell it to you as a horror story. It's a short story about a group of teens dealing with their brain problems, told with a distinct voice.

If your problem with it was that it's "unclear" and "vague" then you were almost assuredly approaching the story from the wrong angle. The supernatural elements are there as window dressing, and exploring or explaining them would be like going on at length about the manufacturing process of condoms in the middle of a sex scene.

What kind of robutt finds it impossible to understand "stepping out of your comfort zone" or "projecting an image to cover up your insecurities" or "being different"? These are not bizarre, niche sentiments. These are traits that you see all throughout fiction and the real world.

Genetic Sexual Attraction
>Experienced between mothers and sons, fathers and daughters, and between more distant relatives, but most common between siblings of opposite sex who bear a close resemblance. It takes the form of an overpowering, almost electrical grip of emotion, associated with an inability to keep away from the other person and an almost primordial sense of having belonged together all their lives.

>Particularly noted in the case of adopted children who are subsequently reunited with the biological parent or sibling of the opposite sex, seemingly because the normal bonding mechanism has been disrupted.

tl;dr incest is actually totally natural and quite common for relatives who were separated at birth until adulthood and thus did not form familial bonds during childhood

It's still a controversial concept, not exactly well established in science, iirc. It's largely a theory that someone made up to explain why sometimes separated relatives end up fucking even though they "know" that they shouldn't.

Personally I think it's bunk. I think the issue is that reunited relatives don't entirely know how to feel about each other. "This is your real mother, you should love her unconditionally, even though she's a complete stranger!" That's pretty confusing, and if you take that sort of emotional turmoil with no westermarck to inhibit sexuality, it's not surprising that for some people it turns into romantic love.

>>
>>149727042
There aren't any 'routes' in the game, exactly.

The girl your character is billed as being in love with at the beginning of the story does not fall in love with you back. A lot of the story is about dealing with the knowledge that the girl you love will not love you the way you want her to, and moving on and finding someone who will.

So yes, you do end up as friends with her, same as you began, but it's not like you pursued her route and got a friendship ending.

You do get a girlfriend in the end, but it's not her.

It's because they trace photo perspective and they dont usually match perspectives. Still very high quality though.

Who is the best writer in the EVN scene?

Literally who?
>>
>>149732018
jedit, since I am too old school to use anything else.
>>
>>149732018
Textpad, because I'm used to it and generally don't need the extra help of syntax highlighting
>>
>>149732018
I use Scrivener for all planning/outlining/manuscript writing. I then port it over to Editra.

Have you ever started a project in renpy? Did you ever click the button to edit the script? Because it would tell you right there that it recommends using Editra before you get to do anything else. If so you're not "new to renpy", you have literally not used it yet.

Ebi-Hime is a genius. Be lucky we have been blessed at all with her godly writing.

This is the actual truth. Some of her older stuff is pretty bad though, she's gotten better with time but still isn't that great.

When my evn is done I will probably just slide under the radar and not get noticed, which I don't mind.
It has niche appeal and will be free anyway. It's more for myself than anything else at this point. I'll finally be free from it.
>>
>>149738557
I remember when I was once as naive as you. Trust me, the reality is very different from what you imagine it to be.
hi mi tsu
>>
>>149738821
This. I've already made one, and my plan is to make several small niche-y games and release them with minimal fanfare along side bigger ones that I want people to notice.
>>
>>149738903
What is reality really like?

Please tell me. You just need to say it once, and then you can disappear back into the sea of anonymity forever.
>>
>>149738821
>>149739039
As much as I would like it, I can't do this. At some point I'll have to start shilling, getting a twitter, making the website, mailing reviewers, news sites and maybe streamers...
What a pain. Why can't I have a rich uncle or something?
>>
>wanting to slide under the radar
>wanting to be unnoticed
>not soaking up every mention of you, positive or negative, like some sort of disgusting vampire fueled by narcissism

why
>>
>>149739510
I want to be noticed, but I also want to make some games that have a very niche appeal that I don't think would get very popular. Sometimes it just feels good to know some people played it and enjoyed it, even if it isn't a huge amount.

And when I get famous my hardcore fans will find them all on their own and play them anyway.
>>
>>149739193
anons nitpicking stuff you post to death, getting shat on when you don't listen to them, being falsely accused of tracing, anons trying to poach your artist, etc

I have crippling anxiety problems.
This project means a lot to me so I just want to get it done as best I can and be done with it. If a handful of people like it along the way, that's a bonus.
When I start afresh with something new, then maybe I can open up a bit more.

i write in notepad++ cuz i'm a fucking rube

why are you people using software like microsoft word to edit something that is essentially going to be a computer program

if you are writing a ren'py game and you are using a program that makes a tab character when you hit the tab key (instead of 4 spaces) you are doing it horribly wrong
