Consult this Starting Guide,
then see the /vg/'s huge Stalker General for more tips and links: >>>/vg/stalker

Play in the release order. Start with no mods - only latest patch, OR get the full "Starter Pack" first; these contain bug-fixers and light visual mods that can help performance as well.
Leave big overhauls for later playthrougs. Avoid the "Complete" -mods. Always play on MASTER difficulty for best realism and atmosphere, and disable crosshair.

Don't give up in the beginning! The starting gear sucks ass and first area can be a bit boring.

sure thing, but the visuals in STALKER are still breddy damn gud, IMO. Especially the lighting and textures are top-notch.

The hell they do! They can also be literally blind at times, like if you sit behind a high bush.

They are pretty good at hunting you by sound though. People don't seem to realize that the HUD has that audio-emitter meter on it for a reason, and that NPCs can hear you. This has led to some people claiming the AIs having "wallhack", when in reality you can totally trick them to move to empty area just by disappearing from the seen without being spotted or heard.

Like said earlier, the beginning is literally this "hobo phase", where you got shittiest possible gear of the game, and need to go against better equipped foes. The mission at the Car Park you do in the beginning has also become this "baptism of fire" trial for rookies in recent years. Things do get quite a bit easier once you finally get a proper rifle, pop a scope on top of it, and load in some AP ammo. A proper protective suit with NVGs also help a ton.

personally, I find it quite therapeutic after a while.
Vanilla has this special mood of its own, which just about any mod will instantly ruin / replace with its own. There may not be as much content and fancy features in vanilla, but the little there is "feels" right and balanced.

And being already a 2007 DX9 game, it also looks quite nice! Indoors are very realistic, while outdoors feel tad more stylized and atmospheric.

So, AO3 and CoC; is it just me or is armor worthless? I'm still getting dropped in a single burst of non-AP 5.45 in a fully upgraded exoskeleton as easily as I was while wearing a windbreaker.

Funny thing about that, I've been comparing AO3 damages.ltx, actor.ltx, weapon and outfit files, and the ammo entries, and for the life of me I'm stumped as to why player's armor works like tissue paper compared to the NPCs "fake" armor entries.

Every time I compare the math and values to vanilla CoC, there's virtually no difference; unless they added some retarded scripting or new variables, I can't see what the deal is.

The only working theory I have right now is based on a discrepancy in the damages.ltx regarding the "ACTOR MODIFICATION SECTIONS" at the very bottom. The NPC version of this document includes head entries, the player one doesn't, so I think it might be treating Exo suits and other non-helmet gear as if you have no helmet in *some* of the damage math, and I'm just catching 9x18 in my teeth on an absurdly regular basis.

Whatever the problem is, losing 3/4 your health to sawn-off buckshot in a goddamn upgraded Merc Exosuit is not fucking right.

For k_ap <= BPC (bone protection coefficient inside damages.ltx):

k_hit * hit_power * BDC * hit_fraction (BDC stands for bone damage coefficient inside m_stalker.ltx)

Otherwise:

max[(BDC * hit_fraction), (k_hit * hit_power * BDC * (1 - BPC/k_ap))]

The above formulas are accurate, provided k_ap values doesn't exceed 0.75. Anything higher than that, and it becomes a mess and I don't feel like trying to figure it out.

Now, as for player: hit_fraction is taken from outfit.ltx for each armour, BPC is still inside damages.ltx, but it has separate section from NPCs (nothing is preventing you from using values that NPCs do though), BDC is inside actor.ltx.

Now, please, stop discussing things you have zero knowledge about and jumping to conclusion.

Also, because of how arms on NPCs are situated when they are aiming at you with most guns, depending on the weapon's precision, you might be hitting arms instead of the torso, which might give an illusion of enemies being bullet sponges.

Now go compare the values again with the knowledge you've gained.

So after a couple of hours of .ltx scouring and in-game testing, it appears AO3 for CoC is a mess damage-wise due to a combination of extremely faulty shotgun tweaks and not bothering to scale values in damages.ltx to compensate for the overal increased power of weapons and ammo, completely fucking headshot damage from weak weapons versus high-level helmets.

One pointless modding mystery solved, so many more to go.

Anyway, MISERY is whole other experience. You might want to first revisit the mod with a weapon pack like STCoP and maybe just try a whole other mod like The Way To Pripyat. If you play MISERY this early, you'll be left agonized.

It is easy. Even on master, unless you are using Arsenal Overhaul 3, where the "Arse" can be taken seriously in the name. It's plagued with insane damage values

Try Call of Chernobyl with AO3, though. It feels challenging enough. Set out a goal. It'll take you back into both SoC as CoP. I do not recommend installing 1.4 RC2 yet, though. It's buggy, go with 1.3.2 and grab yourself a few nice mods.

And lastly, MISERY is also plagued with features some swear on, others absolutely despise. But in reality, it's a really good mod for someone who can get into heavy roleplaying. Try it out if you really want to.

I did and it worked fine I'm at Cordon after x-18 and I only got a crash like that once in Dark Valley after a while but after reloading from the autosave it worked fine.

Been out of the STALKER scene for awhile. Last time I played seriously was when LURK 1.2 was still in development and when the first edition of misery came out. Haven't touched Lost Alpha yet and I should probably play that. I know there's a mod of the year edition of Lost Alpha, is that better than the release edition?

Alright bros, I got SoC and the starter pack installed. Being 23 now, I can't believe I haven't played this sooner.

After getting my ass reamed at the garage a few times, I got smart. I sent the boys i'm with in first as a distraction and I flanked around back. I'm playing on master, so I guess my guns do my damage too. I just plinked away trying to score headshots with my shitty makarov until I cleansed the garage.

The distraction team took heavy casualties. There was one friendly survivor who was moaning on the ground. I had no medkits, so I coudnt heal him up. I just left him there.

Fast forward a little bit and I'm at the bridge with enemy militants. The guy wanted 500 bucks for me to pass, which I have, but I didn't want to cough it up. I snuck there at night and did some 28 days later shit and killed them all. Now I have an AK.

This game is fun.

Just got done talking to The Mole and going through the tunnels/military base to get Streloks shit and documents.

That was a struggle. Had an AK74 no optics. I killed an invisible mutant that scared the shit out of me. Also got spooked by some screaming mutant at the end of the tunnel. Managed to kill it somehow.

The military base can go fuck itself. It was dark as fuck and I was still getting spotted across the map so I just had to run in the building and wait for them all to run in and gun them down in the choke point. Felt cheap, but whatever. On to the bar now.

Actually yes I've played both Misery 1 and Misery 2.

Misery 1 is a fun difficult mod that makes me struggle and punishes me for being stupid or try to rush

Misery 2 made everyone bullet sponges with aimbots and focused more on adding even more useless inventory shit.

I have never played Misery 1 but I can testify for misery 2.1 that if you're using proper guns/ammunition against the proper targets, it is not bullet spongy. As much as I would've liked the use the "MP5" in that game as primary even after Zaton, you can't.

And I completely disagree for the random items. Most of them you can keep and use as a 'helper' to your repairs and with others it adds very tangible micro management and skill to knowing weather or not to pick something up like "oh man, I wonder how much this broken radio will sell for, should I drop the AK and pick up this and the mapping kit instead?" instead of "oh man I wonder how many AKs I'm carrying, oh, I gotta drop some, oh well, such is life in the zone" (and don't get me wrong, you'll still carry a lot of AKs, it just wont be as stupid and it adds to the gameplay and involvement you have in doing even menial things such as looting)

AI has a lot of holes, like predictable pathing, walking patterns, blind spots and so on. Going-off-on-purist-niggers-OP-here, Yes weapon dismantling is going to be very interesting because it'll add even more to how you decide to play the game and give you all around more options. You won't need to keep lugging 50 guns if you have enough money, just extract the parts you need to repair that sick shooter you found earlier and move on. This will facilitate more fluidity of gameplay since you wont be out of stamina for basically half of the game and it will allow for neat "builds" that could include more than 1 primary weapons since you'll be encumbered less than before, a LOT less.

More parts address issues with granularity, variety and balance. It's better find parts all the time which you can 'choose' whether or not to use. Rather than not finding anything and feeling like you're getting fucked by RNG. You can't seriously expect to find parts all the time that give you 10% just like that, that would not be as enjoyable in the long run and it would make the game significantly easier.

If you plan to go near their territory, it doesn't really matter. They eliminate every possible threat regardless of circumstance.

And as far as being seen at night,it really depends on atmospheric conditions, treading at night doesn't equal better cover 100% of the time, especially if you stay in the open too much. For the most part I'm pretty sure it only gives you more time to get from cover to cover so you're not spotted.

It is a valid complaint. Realize that for the stutter to go away, one usually sets the radius of online AI to a huge amount. This is all fine and dandy, until you get bandits with makarovs sniping you from over 300m. I was taking a stroll south of Shevchenko when I started taking fire and after realizing it's coming from the cranes I made my way up there to find two bandits with a sawnoff and a makarov.

Misery isn't all it's cracked up to be. The resource pressure is super fun for me at the start, but after playing it twice, the amount of supplies one finds mid game absolutely ruins it. One makes tons of money simply by looting the stashes and waiting for NPCs to die so you can take their shit. Firefights aren't as difficult as people say they are, either, but the fact that one needs to use a third party addon for them to be enjoyable shows they haven't tried hard enough.
The whole difficulty thing comes from making the game "unfair" for the player (compared to NPCs), a strategy used frequently that isn't bad at all - NPCs should have an advantage, they're going up against someone who can actually think. In Misery however, this backfires, because once the player reaches that "level" where the devs deem you worthy of actually entering firefights (remember, for the first 20 hours of the game, you're supposed to scavenge only!) you simply gain far more than you lose in your outings. After that, all that remains are these aimbots that people complain about.

This wasn't my point. My point is that mid game, all that fabled resource pressure of yours crumples. Medkits, injections, weed, cocaine, epinephrine, repair kits, and all that jazz becomes such a common find for me that I only really needed to buy some supplies when going to Pripyat, and some occasional food and bullets for rifles whose caliber is rare. Coupled with the fact that traders always have everything really lessens the experience.

The main issue stems from people that were "raised" on vanilla being mad that now Misery could be the definitive CoP experience. They WILL complain, if something is not perfect in the mod, hence exaggerating any small issue that may not be noticed by another player and just helping in feed the "meme".
