If you want to do the latter you should be focusing on playing a small number of high-impact heroes that are capable of both carrying fights and hitting buildings, that scale well (with a good all-round support pick or two thrown in like phoenix or earth spirit).

Reducing your hero pool and focusing on set gameplay areas allows you to work on your general dota skill more and improve as a whole.

If possible you should have a pool of heroes that allow you to get around most drafts. Unless it's a really hard counter, your own play will be a much larger factor than the matchup.

You should be looking more at generalist heroes that are solid picks in most games, stuff like juggernaut, slark, etc

N00b gamer here, recently downloaded Dota and got hooked... I've never played a game like this and enjoy the challenge....

...But god damn, I feel like I spend most games just killing creeps and then getting fucking rekt when all 3 or more of heroes come out of nowhere and slaughter me.

I've tried to stick with a few different heroes to try to get the hang of them: Lich and Sniper, who I sucked with, Sven who I always did decent with, and now legion.

I'd like to get better so I can actually enjoy the game... Right now it feels like an abusive relationship.

But it runs smoothly on my mac with no lag, and it's fucking free so that pretty much separates it from 99% of what's out there.

Any words of advice for a noob much appreciated. inb4 "macfag".

Try and get your team to gank the carry with you in lane, it's less conspicuous than the offlane Void suddenly leaving when he's level 6/7. At that point everyone knows what you're planning. But if your supports or even your carry leave the lane it's less noticable, especially if you have a carry who can deal damage inside of chrono or follow up chrono with a stun. When carries leave their lane people usually assume they're jungling, and in my experience most players assume that up to 5k MMR.
