I got Emi's route first [trying to go for Rin's], then went for Rin's route, then got Lilly's [trying to get Hanako's], then got Hanako's, then went for Shizune...

...Aaaaand kinda stopped halfway through when I got bored of it and the less than steller pacing/writing of that route.

This was all in the span of like a couple weeks just the other month as I'm new to the game, Maybe I'll go back and finish it having discovered this lovely general.

It was around october last year, I was coming back from a job interview and saw an old schoolmate walking down the street. Passed her, parked my car, bought myself some beer for the evening and I just saw her walking by again. It was a rainy day and she lived close to my place so I offered her a ride. We have not talked to each other for about 9 years I think at that point, we agreed to hook up sometimes, and so we did a couple times but nothing came out of it. I got Emi's route first by sheer accident, was trying to get Rin as well.

I didnt care though, I liked Emi as was, and she was a pretty good character (I didnt think i'd like her nearly as much as I do now, though).

I really, really recommend finishing Lillys and Emi's routes, Emi just because my favorite girl, and Lilly because Even though she's blind, she can comprehend why kids love the taste of cinnamon toast crunch.

I was surprised at getting Emi at first, but after watching the little intro video, I felt like going forward.

I followed a guide to get rin next, and some anons helped me here to get Lilly, and I retraced that to get Hanako.

I just dont like Shizune as a character, she seems so boring, I would've really rather had Misha.

Yeah, again very much the same for myself.
I didn't actually realised I was routelocked to Emi until the kiss, because I am not a smart man and didn't catch on that the end of Act 1 is the routelock. She was great, and while I like Hanako more as a tied-1st with Rin, Emi is second without a doubt, and DEFINITELY the most suited character to Hisao himself.

I too followed a guide to get to Rin and to avoid getting the bad ending, though with the way it was going It felt like it was all a bad ending until the post-nsfw scene epilogueish bit at the very end. Honestly, what pissed me off the most was seeing the lovely progression into a relationship with Emi in what I saw of her route where you had time to do couple stuff the whole way, compared to anything resembling a relationship being dangled in front of you in Act 2, and swiped away until the last scene or two of Act 4 with Rin.

As for Shizune... Sue me, but I like her, I thought she was bossy and annoying at first but she ended up being kinda fun, its just that again the writing of her route really lets her down and all the potential cute stuff is thrown aside one way or the other after a while. It would've been so cute and a good character turning moment to see her reaction when Hisao revealed he had learned sign language, but that was taken away from us because 'lol misha' [Misha is great though, but still]

Yeah, I thought I had a bad ending as well.

I didnt follow a guide, but I was told by an anon a tip "dont try to understand Rin, try to live with her", I got that tip in act 1, so I made the decisions with that bit of help, and didnt push rin into telling me everything, and didnt push rin into the person I wanted her to be (arent you happy people like your art?)

I still thought I fucked up, until they got together.

I realized I was routelocked to emi, because it said "Act 2: Form" and a cut scene played with Emi and Hisao obviously together.

I also googled a chart, and after following my decisions, it lead to "emi: act 2: form" and so I realized, "Might as well go along for the ride".

It thought Shizune was going to be a very boring, very bland, studious girl that focuses on her studying and her edjamuhcation, but it seems Im wrong. I'll do her route soon.

That is in fact a good picture anon. It sort of shows her as girl, looking girly, rather than just the normal Rin we see that look inbetween.

I swear, I talked to the friend who got me to play the game, and the major fault with the game [mainly Rin's route and the very just-before-end of Hanako's route, is that Hisao is a complete idjit. There were so many point during Rin's route that were apart from out actual choices, where if hisao wasn't such a damn twaddle everything could have gone a bajillion times smoother.

Its still a shame that at the end, it isn't about understanding rin, 'cause I feel like understanding is a healthy part of a relationship y'know? Not to mention it was probably her oddness and the want to understand her uniqueness that drew me to her in the first place. that and tomboyish artist with dark red hair and some kind lack-of-emotional disorder [there is a name for the one she's theorised to have, I forget it though] was scratching all my itches.

Maybe I'll play it again to see if my views changed, but when I played it the first time I got pissed off with the whole ordeal enough to take up boxing training with a punchbag to let off the steam. I lost weight, but man, I don't think my knuckles can handle that again.

hanako's is interesting in that you can see the creative process at work; it's clearly an unpolished draft version and at one point the alpha repair team has to throw in an explanation as to what's coming next because of this. actually rin's alpha version was good, i thought. her acts 2 and 3 are different, and her personality is a bit less autistic. i liked her character more there

I feel like the very basis of Hisao and Rins relationship is trying to understand eachother. The route focuses on how hisao and her cant seem to get through to the other, and focuses on both their internal struggles with accepting eachother as the person they are, not as the other wants them to be.

In that sense, Hisao and Rin have finallt started their relationship at the end of the arc, and everything they do in the future is them slowly coming together as they try to understand each other, and go through things together.

Hanako has some very dark endings and a very happy one, which is pretty interesting.

Suriko often tries to insist "you dont even want drama you shitlords" as some kind of worthless strawman just because he knows her true end is popular, in case that gives you any idea of what to expect. What he will never acknowledge that his alternative, Hanako's final route, is like if the alpha release only had her bad endings.

Anyways I think you might want to try the good and bad ends, since he has a point in that you should try to have some tension as well as some happy scenes, it's just that his is worse

Thats all well and good, I just wort of wish that there was an actual relationship within her route that we play, in the romance visual novel. About romance. Not so much about two people skirting around each other for two Acts having a bunch of inner turmoil that feels almost forced [on Hisao's part at least, though the writing didn't feel like it was doing Rin as many favours as it could there either but not as bad by a long shot]

It frustrated me, I understand the need for some drama and character development, but Act 2 ended on such a good note everything after felt like a complete regression and just, well, a bit of a mess.

I saw so much potential, man, I was so looking forward to seeing where her route went. It was such a let down.

When I was writing Hanako I flirted with a lot of Bad Ends, to the point where it was almost comical.

Hisao died in a number of ways; one of the most famous amongst the devs was the “Hanako Punch.” Hanako was in a mental state and pushed Hisao away too hard, bringing about a heart attack and death. At the time I thought it was a clever use of the Chekov’s Gun that we dropped in the introduction’s hospital scene, but the execution of the ending was a little forced, making it comical. There was also a scene that was difficult to write, but it involved Hanako jumping in front of a subway train. It was painful to write, and it was cut when the whole “Hanako Psychosis” route was cut (and for good reason; it read like I was rushing towards an unnessecarily dramatic conclusion)

This makes me chuckle, considering my major gripe with the writing on the whole of KS is it ends up more like a long drawn-out dramatic slog to a kind-of-conclusion.

...Maybe that's just Rin's route and I'm too bitter, but still, there were problems with forced dramatics in more than a few places, that felt more like hiccups on the writing's part than anything in-character.

So much tenseness and distance for so little reason.

Whenever somethings been broken anon, the only place for it to go, is up. I've said this before and i'll say it again.
I was sad first when the routes ended, I wanted to continue on.

Then angry, then I was looking for a sequel, and sad again, and now i've accepted it. I've gone through the stages of grief.

And you know what? I feel happy anon. While my imagination is limited in that it's only mine, I feel like now that it's over, I'm not held to the story. I can write whatever I want, I can take it in any direction I want, I can create whatever I want about the characters. And the best part is, it's all 100% right, since no one can tell me it's not.

I dont think any other game has driven me to such a length, at least with anime, you can read the source.

But if I have to create the source to read it myself, so be it.

I still feel that the choices you had to make to get the good ending for Rin felt almost nonsensical and counterproductive themselves, and the fact it felt like a bad ending the whole time until, well, the very last scene almost made it feel like a bad end route with a good end slapped on.

Honestly, the whole thing would feel so much more complete if it just ended at the end of Act 2, everything after feels a little stiff and forced and counterproductive in the writing to me.

... Man, I just want to make Rin happy, give her some actual support and get close to her without trying necessarily to understand her, just be there with her, live with her like that anon tipped you off to doing. It's incredibly and awfully narcissistic of me to think and say, but I know I could do a better and more stable job than Hisao does, whatever choices you make in the game. I just wanna see that beautifully unique redhead smile, and see her happy and content.

Yeah, I don't really want to go into all of the effort repeating so much, to just then go down the bad ending and feeling even more feels

I know it's not directly related but for shil like that I just watched them on youtube. Even though I've did the scene 3 times (due to my save file) I can never bring myself to pick the bad Hanako ending, rather just watched it online and repeat the good one.

Also didn't like how Rin and Emi both had identical track day scenes, but I couldn't skip it on my Rin playthrough after Emi.

I thought about it alot, and no, thats precisely what the route was against. The routes bad ending happened because Hisao couldnt accept Rin.

The choices to make the good ending for Rin, thinking about it now, make the most sense.

"I want to support her"
i.e. I dont want to change, rin, I dont want to make her my own, I want to help her find herself.
That wasnt a necessary choice, but it led to the
"Doesnt matter" instead of "I need to understand" or "Then Explain"

Doesnt matter is the best option, Hisao putting Rin infront of himself, letting Rin find herself gently, rather then forcing her to explain whats going on with "then explain" which leads to the bad ending.

"I need to understand" is slightly more neutral in the sense that Hisao is still not getting that Rin doesn't even understand herself, and he can't put it on her.

The next choice that matters big time is the one that decides Good or Neutral.

Neutral being "arent you happy people like your art?"

This can again be seen as Hisao not expecting Rin for what she is, not trying to understand Rin, and instead trying to push his pre conceived notion of what Rin should be feeling, rather than what she actually is.

"And if you found someone like that?"

This is Hisao helping Rin find herself in a way, these are questions that Rin needs to ask to find herself, but questions she cant ask by herself.

Rin doesnt know how to get what she wants, but she knows the result she wants. Its backwards in a way. Its up to Hisao to attempt 3 things.

1. To force her to tell him what she wants, make her explain when she doesn't know herself
BAD
2. To let Rin figure it out, but still try molding Rin to what he wants Rin to be
Neutral
3. To let rin figure it out, and let rin finally come to terms with who she is as a person.
Good.

Rin doesnt know people really. In order for Rin to fully begin her relationship with Hisao, and understand people, she had to find herself.

Hi Arcinae!
About F/SN you can skip without problems the first 2 days of the Fate route (the first one you play). They're EXACTLY the same 2 days played in the prologue as Rin, aside a couple of big foreshadowing spoilers.

When you'll play UBW route (Rin's one) or Heaven's Fell (Sakura's one) the first 2 days are similar but not exactly the same. This because you'll have more choices that will allow you to enter another route.
Said that, you can skip them 'til you have the choices.
If I remember correctly, you discover on day 3 if you're playing the Fate route or Heaven's Feel; and on day 4 if you're playing Fate route or UBW route.
As I said before quoting you in another post, to open UBW you have to play before Fate 'til the end, and to open Heaven's feel you have to play before UBW ('til one of the 2 endings) and Fate

I didnt skip them, and oh man, that was extremely annoying and the reason I didnt play.

Im playing the realta nua version, which has different .exe's.

I want to do heavens feel pretty badly, since Sakura is so cute :P I like Rin as well, but from what I remember of watching some of the UBW anime ,I didnt particularly care too much for saber. I might as the story goes on.

Anyway, hopefully the story finally moves on from this point forward. My memory drops off, and I cant remember precisely what happens except for they get knocked out in a school, and the last thing I remember is from the UBW anime, where caster surrounds them or some shit.

Im just sort of sick of the first 3 days, doing exposition, then the next few hours were repeats of the exact. same. exposition
