After the chapter boss, Bal gives you the option to take his help. Normally, you would. And he'd open a gate to Coldharbour.

But, there's an activation spot in the middle of the room, and if you activate it, your character kneels down and dies in the fire. You then start at the Temple of Stendarr at the character creation screen, and you're supposed to make a new character because your old one is literally dead forever.

It's kind of sad, isn't it? It's hard for me to put into words what made Vigilant so good, there's just something about it.

First off, the music is obviously a huge part. Shit was fantastic, and the variety was more than welcome considering Skyrim has like four music tracks otherwise. Music does a huge part to set the mood, and it seems like Bethesda forgot about this. There's also, of course, the boss fights. Seeing a unique and interesting boss is a reward in and of itself, even if their combat style is pretty vanilla. Again, Bethesda seems to have forgotten this, so we spend most of our time fighting visually identical draugr and dragon priests,which are fine for dungeon fodder, but shit for bosses.

Then there's the sense of scale. The environments are HUGE in Coldharbour. It makes them feel more realistic. Of course, they're designed well enough to also feel alien at the same time, which is good because that's important. Like, at the end of Morrowind you're diving into a volcano and then you have the Heart of Lorkhan in front of you and it's crazy. The same sort of thing happens in Vigilant. The variety keeps you on your toes, and when you get to Coldharbour, many of the rules you've come to understand about the world no longer apply. You're out of your element in a strange, alien place. You clearly don't belong here, and that does worlds for the feel of the game.

What makes Coldharbour so cool is that it feels like a proper adventure. You're suddenly in a weird world, you don't know what to do or how to get out, you're not handheld and told where to go. You're just told "your ultimate goal is the white tower" and then you're on your own.

Plus there's the flashbacks. Regardless of how good or bad the story might be, the way it's told is great and worlds better than anything in vanilla Skyrim.

Vigilant doesn't have the endorsements it deserves because it isn't properly translated into English. I've endorsed it due to the first two chapters being excellent, but for people with low tolerance for Engrish and no knowledge of Moon, the mod remains inaccessible.

That kind of thing is why Dragonborn is such a breath of fresh air for a lot of people compared to the vanilla game and Dawnguard. Dawnguard has some new architecture, but it's mostly more of the same. Also the Soul Cairn is lame as shit. Dragonborn, on the other hand, takes you to Solstheim, which feels different enough to count. There's new, unique, menacing enemies like the Lurkers, and you're taken out of your element in crazy, non-euclidian, insanity-inducing Apocrypha. I really wish they did more with Apocrypha instead of just having short levels, but y'know.

Of course, there's also the lack of quest markers, and that's great. There's a much more steady sense of progression compared to the vanilla game. Bethesda asks you to go to the quest marker and do a thing, and then you're told what to do next. Goals are never more than one or two objectives off. In Coldharbour, you know from the beginning you need to get to the White-Gold Tower, and all your other goals emerge organically from that. It's good.

Lastly, I think a very significant part of what makes Vigilant good is the lack of voice acting. I say unfortunately, because this probably wasn't intentional. Given the choice, Vicn probably would have had the mod voice acted, and I'm not sure that would improve it. For the entirety of your time in Coldharbour, you hear anyone speak, except for a few generic little sound bytes. It makes you feel alone, and it makes the world feel empty in a good way.

Ultimately, the only criticisms I have a minor. I would have liked *some* quest markers at certain points. It got a little hard to figure out where I was going, though I'm assuming this would be mostly remedied if I could understand what the fuck Pepe was saying to me. Also, the textures were kind of same-y. Literally everything was made out of the same orange bricks. Got a little stale. Some variety would have been welcomed.

Revenant is apparently going to be darker than Vigilant, cross your fingers Undeath is a good bet, if your character is into Necromancy and Conjuration, you'd be a fool not to play it. If you're a Vamp or Werewolf though, you won't get anything out of being a Lich.

You can even have nighttime and daytime in Coldharbour with vanilla weathers

It pretty much is. Everything is brown. If there's one complaint I have about Coldharbour it would be that the aesthetics gets a little drab after a while. It would be nice to see different colored objects and lighting.

You don't need to edit the mod's weather. It's not like vanilla Skyrim cells where the weather resets itself half a minute after you change it. You force cloudy or foggy weather in Coldharbour, it will stay cloudy and foggy for a while.

that may be, but I'm liking the mod and might do this anyways just so it's done and it'll be nicer (imo) the next time I play at least, and I won't have to fiddle with anything after that, I'm sure it's just a quick edit once I figure it out.

Maybe some asshole is probably storing vamps in a dark and cold cellar just to store info or make vampire bimbo sluts that serve as unaging whores, making the vampire whores weaker with enchanted piercings or with internal implants and whatnot.

The possibilities are endless.

Maybe the dwemer did exactly so and have vaults of very old and insane and/or feral vampires ready to swarm and feast upon unwary travelers and explorers, or even unleash them upon small villages and towns or in cities with powerful teleportation magic, then clean up the mess as the dawn rises to weaken the vamps and finish them off.

I also get boners when I see my vamp characters feed and/or turn other people into vamps, don't know why.
