You know, HoI4 is so simplified that you can hardly call it a grand strategy game. In fact, it seems that grand strategy genre in general is dying because all the major companies dumb down their games to reach a wider 100 IQ audience. Just because a game has a Paradox world map doesn't mean the strategy-aspect of that game is grand at all. Plenty strategy games that are not considered grand have more micromanagement than HoI4 and EU4, for example.

Started as russia, immediately released + played as armenia, cheated to get back Armenian cores in the ottoman empire because I'm a shitter who can't OPM to GP in 100 years. Armenia starts as a civilized nation to Persia's unciv status, so expansion isn't too hard there. Russia sphered me early and kept me safe from the Turks until they started going full sick man of Europe and I could take them independently.

Armenia + Persia = coal and iron, so industrialization was fairly simple. I also got a shitton of prestige from repeated defensive Ottoman wars - they'd declare on me for our shared cores, Russia would intervene and I'd get free prestige and a state sometimes.
