Situations are when a word holds a stronger meaning, is a foreign word with special connotations, or would lose its original intent if we translated it. Dōryoku likely fits all 3 here.

Yes, it doesn't really make sense to a pure western audience but this is Visual Novels. We're all weaboos here. Someone generally goes berserk if "Nee-san" is force translated into "Sis" or "Sister".

TL;DR: Lost in Translation is inevitable. Japanese is a complex language but strict in its rules. English is by far the most fluid language in existence next to painting.

This is what really makes 0 sense. How does it lose intent from TRANSLATING it, but it DOESN'T lose it from NOT translating it? What English-only people comprehend from the word "douryoku" is jack shit except "welp this is a Japanese word that tells me nothing". How is that not lost intent? Translating it as "Power" or whatever would convey more of the original intent than douryoku.

More minor nitpicks about your post include the fact that "douryoku" sounding better by some arbitrary metric is not nearly as relevant as whether the author's original intent is conveyed. Doesn't really matter how nice it sounds if the wrong intent and meaning are being conveyed. It's always a balancing act, but this just throws that act out the window and just doesn't even attempt to translating. So the intent and meaning are out the window. At that point, how it "sounds" has no relevance. Another minor nitpick is that being a weeaboo and used to Japanese has no relevance to whether simply leaving a word untranslated is a good choice or not. Angry weebs have no relevance to this.
