I don't bother too much when I'm using CB. Mostly since they all suck. But if a monster is stunned or tripped and I have 5 phials and energy sword is ready I'll pop it. Other weapons have clearly useful stuff though, like for LS both the counter and max bar are amazingly good. I want to use adept but having both of those would be killer so I'm considering guild to see how they work together.

You know how 2* ingredients replace 1 in 4U, and 3* replace 2*? Well, in MHGen the old useless recipes for some reason stay on the menu, so by the end of the game there's like 6 pages of recipes, 5 of which are obsolete.
You filter them by effect, which helps a little.

Is there a point to gathering as a hunter now, besides for charms/relics?

I'm curious if there are any large monsters that'd fit in Deserted Island Area 4. I think it's too cramped for a conventional fight but it has a really great creepy/spooky factor that would make for an interesting fight.

What mechanics introduced in MHX do you hope stay and which ones do you hope never see the light of day again?

Nyanters are cool and I don't mind them at all, but they need some rebalancing, namely so that big piercing boomerang nyanter isn't the only good offensive nyanter. Knowing the MH devs they'll just nerf it into dirt so that we have no good offensive nyanters.

The new palico mechanics in general are a good step towards not having to slam your face into the RNG over and over to get a good palico, though there's still lots of room for improvement on that front.

Everything else. Hunter arts don't really add anything substantial to the combat besides a big flashy move you do occasionally when you have a big opening.

Styles often boil down to one or two styles being good (pretty much always striker and/or adept) and the rest being useless or gimmicky.

The kitchen is a difficult to navigate mess of useless options. It feels like a really awful version of P3rd's hot springs/drinks.

Weapon upgrading might be neat if weapons had more attributes to set them apart from each other, but for now, the now-massive variety of maxed-out weapons adds nothing to the game besides a ton of weapons that exist only to be outclassed by the few good weapons.

All the particle effects are absurd, especially given the wimpy 3DS hardware. Please give me 60FPS instead of pretty lights and a tiny FOV.

First time player. I can't decide between Sword and Shield and the Bow.

SnS's move set is so butter smooth to me and I love it. Apparently elemental stuff is super good on them too which is nice. Does this apply to status effects (sleep and the like) or elements only?

It's really nice having a shield too even if the guard supposedly isn't that great. And then there's the ability to use items with the weapon out which is great.

Bow seems really fun too however. Only issues with it is its sometimes awkward trying to get some distance so you can do your crit attacks and I can't seem to stop drawing into to arrow slash. I still suck at aiming while on the run.

I'm a little concerned about cutting with the bow too.

Anyways, the main reason I'm posting this is for advice about armor in the early game. Would it be wise to stick with one of these for the time being so I don't have to craft two armor sets?

Elemental is garbage in MHX, even for fast weapons like SnS, so all the best weapons are either raw, or Glavenus variant with blast on them.

50 Power Coating Level 1 for Bow cost like 1500z which is a lot early game and you'll want to buy them after each hunt, so bow is shit at the start in my opinion. Also the fact that charging costs stamina so you'll want to use items that stop stamina depletion which you also can't get early game or are just hard to come by

Element is just bad in general. Outside of the few monsters that are very resistant to raw and/or very weak to an element, elemental damage is usually just a nice little bonus that get tacked on to your massive raw.

it's also super hard to get, and it's super weak up until level 6 which is high rank, meaning you're still gonna have to craft high rank armor to finish the set anyway

just get rath armor or stick with buja, no armor set is really worth making in low rank, and variant armor is intended to be end game

You can place bombs in its path and it'll eat them, followed by an explosion and a chance to fish it out.
Alternatively, place bombs on the field and toss a Sonic at the same area when Nibel is under the sand. It'll be attracted by the noise and do a Jaws-like bite from below, swallowing the bombs. Explosion and fishing ensues.

Daimyo is more fun for me because he at least tries to attack me above ground. Shogun digs and even without cats he has this odd tendency to hit absolutely nowhere near me several times before coming back up.

The thing never actually gets close to being a threat. Daimyo at least does his funny little jump and shell rush. Shogun even got bleed and it never actually hit me with its claws to inflict it.

Get to G-Rank so you can feel some sort of accomplishment for putting time into 4U. Gen is easier to start with than 4U so you are just going to blast through the start and get to the fun end of things in a few hours. Also enjoy your nice mulitplayer HUB while you can, the Gen one is pretty bad.
