The gym system is greatly in favor of the attacker since you're against an easy mode AI and you can gang up and attack them all at once with groups.

It's more efficient to wait until you are at a higher level and get Pokemon with a higher starting CP.

But if I got it right, in the end it makes no difference because they all have (almost) the same end-cap, you just have to invest more into the ones you caught early on.

Catch literally everything.
Save all your shit that takes 12 - 25 Candies to evolve You get candies from catching(you get 3), hatching eggs (3 to 35) and transferring Pokemon (1).
Transferring Pokemon basically deletes them while giving you a candy.

When you reach a certain level you'll get a free Lucky egg, don't use it until you can spend the entire duration evolving Pokemon.
This should Powerlevel you to like 15+, and at this point they'll give you 2 Lucky Eggs.
Repeat the process and you should be at level 20.

Don't use your Stardust for shit until you reach this level, because the higher level you are, the stronger Pokemon you'll typically encounter, and stronger Pokemon need more stardust to power them up to strengthen them farther.
