It's because US wargames and doctrine, I'm looking for the link now, but essentially they determined that a decisive engagement would only happen at less than 18k yards or so, and anything further would result in an inconclusive battle. So all of the battleships after were designed with thicker belts and lighter deck armor to create an immunity zone in the engagement ranges they preferred which was about 15k yards.

Also the deck is 1.5 inches, take a look under the deck and you'll see the thicker part.

the US reached the opposite conclusion in the interwar years and favored opening fire at anywhere from extreme range (27k+ yards) to Long range (21k yards-27k yards), preferably with aerial spotting, and designed their deck armor and immunity zones with that in mind. Quoting from the source,

If you look more closely at a lot of the things you see on those ships, most of them are there to somehow keep the ship afloat and moving and the guns firing while half the crew is dead and everything is on fire and blown to shreds.

achieve an accurate plot of the movement of the target and to apply corrections specific
to the current conditions at the ship’s guns. Consequently, the fleet engaged in Long
Range Battle Practice with ranges that exceeded their preferred engagement ranges, firing
at 21,000 yards in 1921, and progressively moving out to 27,000 yards by 1935. But physics, the natural dispersion of ballistic rounds, and the performance of optical
rangefinders and visual spotting put limits to the accuracy of such fire. So, while the
Americans could engage at such extended ranges, they still expected decisive actions to
be at shorter ranges.

BUCKY BUILD QUESTIONS

I've been playing the fubuki since forever now (I never wanted to put up with the Kagero) using a fairly standard IJN DD loadout carried over from low tiers.

Then in 0.53 I jumped on the TA bandwagon and used the 12km torps.
But then WG gave the type93, and with TA they may do 72 knots and 21km damage but have only8km range (so its similar to Kageros default F3).

Obviously my detection is the lowest possible so I have plenty of buffer, but theres usually always some DD that screws up my approach. And that 8km feels to run out so damn fast.

I'm thinking of respeccing to get back the type93's base 10km range (since dat dere 21km damage and still good speed at 67knots), but reading about builds Ive been wondering if I should get AFT instead of SE for dat 3km stealth fire window.

Thoughts?

That's fine, isokaze/minekaze have the same 1km buffer now and if your winrate in those is less than 60% you need to git gud.

Being able to gunbote at long ranges is actually really useful, but so is not dying in one salvo so I'm a bit torn on SE vs AFT

Iso/mine is whole different story, people just cant kill you so fast, especially other DDs are not powerful enough to do it and mostly have short range torps, and of course most players are tomato.

For my Bucky, I've found AFT coming in handy more often than SE. There are plenty of opportunities to rain down HE on a distracted target from 11km away, but when a DD gets into knifefight range where SE would help out, either he fucked up and is already dead or I fucked am and am already dead; in both cases SE would not be very useful to me. But that's just how I play, I use my gun velocity and stay at medium to long range from other DDs. If you like knifefighting, go for SE, but it's not really my thing.
