Dredmor is definitely a roguelike but also boring. The limited, unchanging animations get stale very quickly, you basically see the same items every run, none of the upgrades really feel rewarding, the barely scaling damage formulas make progression feel unsatisfying, etc

It tends to go fastest using tornado with an air enhancer or two, and evoking disc of storms on the turns between tornado recasts. It also tends to go faster if you're using Makhleb or TSO.

So the smart answer is to leave it right there on the ground. Because it'll get you killed. You lose all your EV, gain like 7 AC, can't cast, can't run away because naga and no spider form, can't kill things because your encumbrance is so high so you can't cast spells to buff your UC... in no circumstances is that a good idea.

If you really really want it you could go chei and still have blade hands castable without a horrible amount of investment. Probably around 16-18 transmutations. But even if you go chei you're almost certainly gonna be better off wearing FDA and learning a ton of spells. Being able to cast cblink and freezing cloud is pretty nice if you're taking it easy.

But you could always try it out. Experimenting with things you think are terrible can have surprising results.

Because SMAC is about nationwide political ideology and individuals who aren't political elites have no ability to influence anything. Plus, the SMAC world is ultra-dangerous but without much variation. What I'd be more keen on is a SMAC game in the style of Battlezone, a base building resource gathering first person vehicle shooter.

Whenever you start a new game in ADoM you get a screen which states that this is the free version and you should buy the premium version.
And to skip this screen, which again happened without fault every time you run the game, you have to press a different letter on your keyboard. Say you had to press a to skip it the first time. Then you die, close adom, then you decide to have another run and this time

I removed the nag screen by causing the function to return immediately.

This, actually. I got into cataclysm before it was even cataclysm:DDA. It was a fun ride but they probably reached a point where they should have stopped adding new shit. The game, like any with no end, gets really repetitive and empty once you've seen everything. The complexity of some of the features are just annoying. The monster variety is my biggest gripe. It starts to feel silly with so many different types of creatures.

That's an ongoing problem in the sandbox roguelike subgenre. You can see this in URW, or even the fortress mode in Dwarf Fortress. If the game is too hard, then starting characters don't have a chance. Once you get traction and solve your character's problems, of course it will be way too easy.

There are plenty of workarounds for permadeath. If it's fun and makes sense conceptually, there's no reason to avoid them just to adhere to some "pure roguelike" ideology.

The main issue is that there are thousands of turns in even a small roguelike game, and they are highly variable in how significant they are and how much time it takes the player to decide. If player 1 is dicking around with his inventory while player 2 just wants to run down an empty hallway, the game grinds to a halt.

Competitive team arena != pve co-op missions. I've mentioned Payday before and I'll mention it again. There dead players have to wait for short windows between police assault waves (5-20 minutes each and sometimes infinite until some extra conditions fulfilled by active players) and also to be resurrected players have to be traded for hostages (civilians are finite per map and require finite cable ties to become hostages, police prioritizes hostage rescue, cops can be made into hostages but it requires specific character skill and some degree of player skill to complete). Don't act dumb and you won't have to wait for 20 minutes doing nothing.

Still, technically has permadeath. And unlike heavy rez restrictions, would actually be workable into a sane game.

If each character had own permadeath condition, death of one player would cause the game to instantly switch into grind mode until that player leveled back up.

If rezing required defeating the boss, this would result in being locked out of high level areas if you lose a character and don't manage to finish the boss off.

The rune is lying on the ground, so in principle you can get it without killing the hydra.

However, you don't really need the rune. The whole point of coming in is to gain XP and loot, and the rune itself is incidental until the vaults.

So, the obvious thing to do is to go into the other lair branch (not slime pits, although that would be hilarious). Eventually you will become strong enough that the hydra is trivial.

To be fair, multiple choice tests are fucking simple. It's a lot easier to make a decision given a few options than it is to pull one out of the blue. If you sat down and thought about it and went "Okay, my only potential options at all are to clear dungeon, get a lair rune, or get the abyss rune" then suddenly it's pretty clear what you should be doing.

For a newer player, it's more like "I don't really know what my options are, but these guys said some things, and since I'm in the thread at all I've heard some things here and there that make this one sound less scary to me."

Used a scroll of familiar summoning somewhere after the casino, got a mimic hivemind. He solo'd a black dragon tension room and an emperor lich tension room. In the end monster memory claimed that mimic hiveminds do 2-24 attacks and hit for 10-600 damage, and it showed; he 1-shot the master summoner and the chaos archmage. Easiest win so far, despite being almost 20 levels lower than on my previous win (since the mimic stole most of the kills).

Why not just have increasingly difficult "dungeons"? Like maybe an extra spooky lab, or a turbo-haunted house? They could even introduce randomized uniques like in tome4.

Orc paladin / barbarian. find an altar in a good spot and get crowned. The crowning gifts those classes can get can carry you through your first playthrough, with some exceptions.

Gnome monk is one of my favourites though. Fast level ups + unarmed damage that scales with levels. They can be good at anything they want; archery, unarmed combat, melee with a weapon, magic. As a bonus they can scribe scrolls without losing mana, and at lvl 13 they can kick down walls, so you don't need any pickaxes.

Nah, if you're going to have randarts and standarts, the standarts should have some unique things about them so that they feel special.

Many roguelikes don't have randarts at all and I don't see you shitting on them.
Ideally you could just have all randarts and they could all have interesting possibilities, but writing code which generates thematic and interesting randarts regularly is probably pretty difficult work.

I like Vanilla Angband's randarts the best myself; they can be a bit shoddy at times - slay generation is pretty fucked up, and so are items with large maluses-, but they are generally thematic.

In a way yes and no. Yes, you slay hydras with, say, 16 heads but you will still encounter 2 or 3-headed hydra and at that point you have to use consumables in order to build it up so you can slay it in one or two hits because you can't use a sword that removes 6 heads to kill a 3 headed hydra.

In short, they don't get completely ridiculous because you end up finding weapons to counter them.
