It really depends on how much you like the idols. It's an idol rhythm game, and those are typically more geared towards people who like certain characters, rather than the competition itself.
Try playing for a few weeks without whaling to see whether you want to actively compete in the events or not, but keep in mind that there aren't any specific advantages to whaling. You won't *miss* anything by going free, either. Some cards are only available for certain periods of time and not buying jewels makes it harder to get them.

It probably would have helped to have known what to expect, like our current situation with PS' story.
The pre-air promotions and initial episodes made it seem like they were going forward off everything the mobage was, but then it became clear that the direction they were going for was more akin to connecting dots leading up to everything the mobage was instead.

The finale was an immense cocktease in this regard with how it was structured to feel more like the beginning of a series rather than an end, especially with it closing on their introduction as the Cinderella Girls.
I personally wasn't all that disappointed in what we got, rather in that it ended after only executing half of what I wanted
