So will there ever be any actual weapons In the game to defend myself with? Knives and stasis guns don't do jack shit when it comes to reapers
>>
>>148251750
You have to hit the Reaper's head/front half for the stasis rifle to work, as well as other projectile weapons.
>>
>>148251750
You're on a hippy colony ship in the far flung nu-future, they likely don't have any weapons schematics on board.
>>
>>148251750

Besides torpedoes for the seamoth and exosuit, the propulsion gun in the experimental build can load and fire items from your inventory.
>>
>>148251750
Reapers have a lot of HP, but 2-3 diamond knives should be enough. It's crabsnakes that I really don't feel comfortable knifing because they move around so much even inside the stasis field.

>>148252419
I haven't tried out the gas torpedoes yet, how powerful are they?

I prefer unconventional weapons like these than some kind of space gun that can fire bullets that still works underwater.

Using that logic, why is there a survival knife schematic?
>>
>>148254515
following typical antigunner methodology, a knife is somehow less lethal than a rifle, despite contributing more deaths per year. because wifles are scawy and muh children :( you don't NEED a high capacity, babykilling, salt weapon when surviving the harsh wilderness. those animals are just trying to live as much as you are bro, no need to have an unfair advantage!

In an unprecedented period of our cultural history, gun violence in schools has frequently been attributed to the proliferation of firearms in video games. Removing firearms from your video game when they aren't essential is pandering to the lowest common denominator, and I commend UW for stooping to the level of AAA companies.

Also, I disagree with his mindset, but I do agree that putting guns in Subnautica would indeed make the game less fun. It's not Resident Evil, and there are already plenty of tools with which to defend yourself with. Hell, the Exosuit can grind the Reaper Leviathan into hamburger with its drills and punch arm, and you're going to have to fight Sea Dragons in it to reach the Sea Emperor's Prison.

honestly guys. ballistic weapons in subnautica is a bad idea.
Ethics and political stances aside.
It would require a completely rework of the early game enemies since you can completely trivialize all of them up to the reaper leviathan by just hitting wasd-wasd-wasd-repeat to infinity with minimal effort. It's actually kind of stupid. Giving guns to the player just let's players kill enemies off which don't respawn readily so it becomes an empty grassy plateau with nothing in it for you to scavenge through all that shitty red garbage to try to find shitty silver

tl;dr no1 cares about guns in subnautica
it's all about torpedoes and submarine technology although now they're doing this exosuite thing so ???
>>
>>148264081
Guns are a terrible idea but i think we should have more ways to defend ourselves in the game, especially when they are adding larger and larger hostile enemies
>>
We need weighted nets. Let us collect heavy stuff and lots of Creepvine, and craft nets to slow/catch predators.

>Basic Net (1 use before it breaks)
>Immobilizes Stalkers for 5 seconds.
>Wire Net (5 uses before it breaks)
>Immobilizes Sand Sharks and Stalkers for 5 seconds.
>Mesh Net (20 uses before it breaks)
>Immobilizes Bone Sharks, Crabsquid, Sand Sharks, and Stalkers for 5 seconds.

All can be loaded as torpedoes in the Seamoth, or thrown by hand. If it still has uses, you can pick it back up. All nets can be used to slow down a Crab Snake or Reaper Leviathan for a few seconds, though the net is destroyed in the process regardless of remaining uses. Nets do nothing to the Sea Dragon. Caught predators can be collected, and take up 9 inventory slots. They can be cooked or cured to fill you to full hunger instantly. You can't catch and cook the largest beasts.

Propulsion Gun to grab Crashes and Acid Mushrooms and fire them at other things
Repulsion Gun can make even the Reaper Leviathan go flying
Seamoth has two types of Torpedoes plus a Fuck You Zappy Field that kills Bonesharks with two full charges and forces Reapers to release you
Exosuit is loaded to bear with punch hands, drill arms, Propulsion Gun, and Torpedo Arm

Unlike usual terran planets, aquatic ones where life thrives more than a kilometer below the surface without any light whatsoever will easily survive asteroid impacts and will not need to worry about the air pollution.

You would have to take this to an extreme of bombarding the planet with many rocks for the overall seas to heat up enough to start making life uncomfortable, but considering that the planet's most dangerous inhabitants can swim in fucking lava and built a castle out of it in a gigantic underwater cavern, I think they'll be okay.

I have 3:

1. Immediately build a fabricator and power cell charger in the cyclops. You'll charge faster than you drain, somehow.

2. Build a nice bedroom for yourself aft of the wheelhouse. Don't forget a lanternfruit tree.

3. Build a wall locker on every other surface available in the sub, then fill them with all the resources on the planet.

Enjoy unprecedented levels of comfy.
>>
>>148297665

Good idea. It'll be harder for the ayys to catch you in a mobile base.

>>
>>148297665
A power cell charger in the Cyclops is pure cheating though. I restrict the chargers to my base so that I have a reason to go home every once in a while. It's really not like the power can run out. Really really not going to happen.

Also the standing glass lockers work better on the sub because the walls are curved and mounted lockers will be floating. Most of the other wall items are very obvious in their floatingness too.
>>
>>148299768
I'll give you that it's kind of cheaty to have the infinite energy going, but i imagine the full version would have a sustainable energy source too, like nuclear, so I'm pretending that's what I'm using. Multiple chargers in the base is a good idea though.

As for the wall lockers, I have to push back with you there, I find they fit perfectly, take up less space and I haven't noticed any weird floating positions. Of course now I'm going to look and it will probably look weird to me for the first time. So thanks for that.

They are not. Just don't give a player a GOOD ballistic weapon, give him some electrified harpoon launcher that needs expensive harpoons manufactured and is manually reloaded, and stick the blueprint somewhere deep.
Or maybe make some sort of airdrop mechanic, where the Sunflower or whatever that transport was called drops you a cache of unscannable emergency weapons (this is the same universe as Natural Selection 2 after all) and ammo, but not the blueprint. You will therefore need to ration the ammo, not blast enemies willy-nilly, but spend ammo on shit that presents an existential threat (or an extreme annoyance, like those fucking sandsharks).
And that dropped weapon is dropped a long distance away from you, above the abyss. Unless you get it right away, it's going to end up 4000 meters under the sea.
When you finally get there after constructing a PRAWN suit, the weapons will turn out to be corroded and useless

Also, how about a set of more rugged structures? Basically the same corridors/junctions/rooms, but with a different, more angular design, bigger price tag (3 lithium and 1 titanium ingot for a multipurpose room? Diamond for reinforcement?) and an ability to withstand way, way more pressure than ordinary structures.
You'd use default base structures for bases above 500m, reinforced default structures above 1.5 km, new structures for bases below 1.5 km.

The Manta's flat body design would be good for multiple vehicle bays with a design that allows their upgrade slots to be accessed. Even if it is singleplayer only, the Manta could be that sub that can hold both the personal sub and exo at the same time or maybe even up to two pairs of those. It really depends on the final scaling.

The Shark will end up being superior unless its only advantage is having a huge amount of internal space but only a similar number of vehicle bays. Big enough for certain base components to fit would work out pretty great, like fitting in an alien containment inside or if it came with a built-in moonpool + upgrade station.

Nothing wrong with the Cyclops being the cheap one-man submersible that services the early game and can go all the way to the end with enough upgrades.

My only real concern with the big subs is IF we do actually get a whole set of them instead of just the Cyclops, then they will always need at least one vehicle bay or the player will not be able to get out after player crush depth is implemented, OR the dock module for attaching a big sub to a base must allow him to transfer into the base directly without going outside. The Draconis actually looks like the ideal candidate for the big sub with no vehicle bay.

I like the idea of the Manta having a docking bay in each "wing", so you can store both vehicles in it. Though for that to be really useful the Manta would need the highest depth resistance so it can launch the Exosuit into the deep more easily.
>>
>>148353249
Not really, at the deepest depths only the Exo can survive so the Seamoth and its brothers are irrelevant. A singleplayer sub for the endgame story sections only needs to hold one Exo, unless they can add in dangerous (story) situations where a highly-upgraded Manta with two vehicles could provide something that a Cyclops won't.

About 6 batteries, and feelgood/cheesy 90s music

Generally the shit I've found so far is too adorable to me to be scary (Biters, stalkers, and bonesharks) because they're not quite too big to me

The reefbacks have spooked me more than anything until I just went and swam with it, and screw rabbit rays. They sound like some majestic giant creature, but they're just a poisonous silly fish that lives in the shallows. Its sound is completely disproportional to how it looks.

There's also the one time I met some mind control fish in the green vine areas, but I don't like to talk about that. Avoid the caves at night, that's all I'll say.

I used to play the game back in earlier versions and it would run fine but now that i load up the latest versions the game takes a long time to load the world & saving the game. The game it's self runs smoothly aside from some rare crashes.

Is there any way for me to fix this or has the game actually become more intensive?
>>
>>148377151
Saving takes me 2-3 seconds compared to instantly in the last update. Loading the world has always taken this long for a few updates now. Make sure you have the game up when you're loading, it doesn't load in the background.

I heard someone mention that it's 10^x instead of 10x a while back, so it's probably much better to have five separate aquariums with five fish instead of one massive aquarium holding 10^5 fish

I guess that since I now have exterior growbeds it wouldn't hurt to downsize the aquariums and put the vines outside. Damn fishes keep pushing me around while I'm trying to tap rubber.

Oh yeah I also got the Seaglide but that fucker runs of battery so quick, seems ever since I got that though I can find other materials like lead, silver and gold. Does the game unlock minerals as there's item progression or have I just been unlucky thus far finding those?

And cool, seamouth then Aurora it is - thanks.

I love the moonpool. Wish you could have more rooms with open bottoms.

also wish you had legit airlocks
>>
>>148467280

The bulkheads are sufficient for underwater habitats.

Amusingly, the properties of water make true airlocks a waste of resources: as long as the compartment is air tight, opening a hatch on the bottom of it is 100% safe, although you probably need power-assist.
>>
>>148468001
I'm not sure what you mean about the bulkheads?

Also yeah I get what you're saying about opening a hatch on the bottom but right now they let you come in from the side and it's really weird and jarring.
>>
>>148468284

I'm saying that there's little reason for horizontal access in an underwater habitat. Dorsal access is useful for surfacing and docking, Ventral access is the simplest and mechanically easiest, not to mention permitting rather effective cargo capacity through obscenely large viable ports.. Beyond that, single bulkheads between critical sections are all that are necessary for safe operation.

I think the side hatches are a strange option, and would rather prefer access through the bottom of a MP room.

It would get tedious if it wasn't worked into some sort of system you could eventually automate. Base maintenance would be something they could add where drones make sure everything is up to snuff if you build a drone hive or something like that. I would have liked to see more drone stuff in general. Drones moving resources from storage and building things a la factorio, defense drones, drones maintaining the base, drones harvesting shit. Would have added something to the game.

We don't need anything that's in the game. You're talking about shit that makes it easier, those two items right there completely eliminate the survival elements of the game.
>>
>>148503505
Which ones, growpots and water filters?
>>
>>148503685
Yes. Were you complaining when those were added saying we don't need them or are you just trying to feel better about the fact that we won't have a significant amount of content in this game.
>>
>>148501962
I forget where but it suggests that the idea of eating non-synthetic food might be difficult for survivors, that might also be where it mentions using spices to help handle shit better which they may or may not add using some plants or just leave as just meaning salt.

The vending machine has some different foods visible in it but not accessible and I think some of the revealed models for the aurora or wrecks include a menu board for some mess hall thing that lists a few different foods, but they could change that and assumedly it's all still synthetic food.
>>
>>148503780
There's a difference between what we have now and upcoming and having fleets of robot drones going around harvesting nodes and killing monsters. With what we have now we still need to go outside the base and do shit. You want to turn Subnautica into a typical 4channer basement.
>>
>>148503948
Yes truly it is quite fulfilling going out and collecting 20 quartz, glad we can't automate this process, it really adds something to the game.
>>
>>148504065
Wrong thread.
>>
>>148504090
That is one of the main points of a survival game, you need to gather materials to keep surviving. Might as well remove Mario's ability to jump from the Mario games and give him a gun since it's too tedious jumping on enemies.
>>
>>148504290
You'll notice Mario doesn't ump on the same goomba the entire game, it's called progression. The experience in Mario changes. Again it's not just a survival game it's a base building survival game. I'd rather have to manually grab quartz early and mid game and eventually work towards an automated system to have a feeling of progression, instead of having this giant ass futuristic base with literal drones in the game right now but still have to go out and go through the tedium of picking up quartz so I can add another couple of windows to it. I mean do you really think grabbing quartz and titanium is the be all and end all of the game? Do you think it actually is challenging and even tests your ability to survive? Also why again are you not complaining about the water filter which stops you from having to grab airsacks and salt? I don't really understand you anon.
>>
>>148504662
It isn't the be-all end-all of the game, there is a story to it that you're going to be uncovering and completing as you go. I'm not raging about the ability to grow your own food and filter your own water because they're both minor things. Without them you still have the Stilsuit and Alien Containment. Do you want them gotten rid of too? And yes you'd have to go out and do it yourself because then you're going out and doing it, it's more fun than juist sitting in your base watching your minions do everything like a garrison in WoW.
>>
>>148505219
Anon you really need to think hard about what you're typing because your argument has zero cohesion to it.
>okay with one automated system because it's a "minor" thing
>not okay with another automated system that would stop you from left clicking your mouse to grab quartz and then scooting back to base because ??????
>says there's more to do in the game than collect food and shit like the story (don't even mention base building or exploration)
>but apparently if quartz collection is automated all you are going to do is sit in the base and do nothing ????
>>
>>148505435
I don't mind food and water being things you can harvest at home. I'd rather have to go out and gather materials for building things myself. It's simple and coherent to me at least.
>>
>>148505875
Okay well then don't use any other automated systems, your arbitrary cut off points for what's acceptable for automation is your own business really. Doesnt really translate into "we don't need this in the game" just you don't need it or want it. For some weird incomprehensible reason.
>>
>>148506223
It just feels that having that much automation cheapens the game, like having guns would. You're not surviving anymore, you're running your own mining complex where all you have to do is wander outside every now and then to look for more story.
>>

There is at least one dev that hangs out here, right? You guys are pushing ideas to them through the proper channels, right?

Because I sincerely hope they take into consideration the discussions over the past few threads as I am very worried about the amount of content that the final game will have. Replayability is a real concern and while having multiple sub choices and random distribution of their blueprints will be a lot of additional work, it is comparatively small compared to how much replayability it will add to the game. The map is quite small for the survival genre so a mechanism to encourage constant re-exploration of areas and sometimes even restarting the game will be critical.
>>
>>148511043
Not a dev, but there are several biomes in the works, more creatures and tech and stuff planned, and overall a lot of stuff is being worked on. A lot won't be in until after launch, though.
>>
>>148511334
The thing about "more content" is that it is a flat increase to the amount of things to do in the game. You add one biome and expand the map a bit to accommodate it, then all you have is one biome and a bigger map.

Changing the mechanics of the game to something inherently more replayable will have a much bigger effect in the long run. If there are four motherships (Cyclops, Manta, Shark, Draconis) and the blueprints for only two are scattered around the map in any particular new game, then you're looking at (playthrough hours) * 6 for each completionist player. Add even more to that with variations of the small vehicles and other assorted variables that are made to be random each game.

Tips on building a first base?

Like should I build near the Aurora, or further out somewhere?
>>
>>148515053
The mesmer will convince you to come inside, then tentacle rape and drown you.
>>
>>148515504
Find the nearest Reaper and build your base right in front of him.
>>
>>148515504
Stay away from biomes with bone sharks, and don't build too close to the aurora. Until you seal its engines, the radiation will keep slowly spreading.

Nah, I remember how comfy it was to shovel snow from the roof of your forgotten outposts in Minecraft, or to cut vines that grew over your mud buildings in Terraria.
Reactivating old installations in Subnautica would be just as good. If you were away for a really, really long time, you'd need to seal all the breaches inside caused by corrosion, power the base up and wait for the water to get pumped out.
There should also be a clunky, LOUD breaker that you can turn on and off for SOMA atmosphere.

At the moment you can get a solid 30-40 hours from it, and more if you enjoy base-building. It's being worked on hard and a lot is in with a lot incoming. You can always putz around to get the hang of it and then leave it until big updates and release as well.

That would be cool. Precursors send a Sea Dragon to collapse the main entrance to the Inactive Lava Flow and trap you for a while. Problem is there's no Titanium or Quartz or any of the other low-level materials down there.

Vinny has ruined practically every other streamer/ youtube gamer for me. He feels like someone who'd you play videogames with but seriously funny. He broke his save though on part 6, so on part 7, months later he had to start a new save. Not even the devs could do anything. It was so broken plus it has his first reactions though, so it's still worth waching
