It's not so bad, really. I brought a WHM friend with me and we essentially brute-forced our way through the fight. I just constantly overcharged and during the last phase rotated Path/Eye to lessen the incoming damage. Sure, it wasn't as much DPS as an Eye/Block rotation, but it worked pretty well. Don't even have to worry about charm or tethers, because both people get targeted by the thunderbolts 100% of the time and the tethers don't even appear. I'm assuming it's because I'm constantly overcharged.
It's a long fight if you're two-manning, though.

Pet classes are fun in MMOs where you can do neat things with them. Summoners were largely shit in normal XI content, but the game was so heavily group based that the things you COULD do solo with pets that other jobs couldn't made it really satisfying. Same reason people loved Dragoon's wyvern pet, even though Dragoon was barely a pet job, just that one unique thing it allowed them to do that other jobs couldn't.

Ultimately it doesn't matter at all in XIV because there's no real prohibative solo content.

And that's what makes it so damn good. Not only is it a spectacle on par with T13, but it's rich with rapid-fire mechanics that keep you on your toes and keep the fight interesting. It's legit one of the coolest fights in the entire game and it makes me sad that neither of the subsequent EX trials have managed to live up to, or surpass, Thordan EX.

I'll never understand people who treat Thordan like it was this crazy mechanical whirlwind. Like sure, it dumps two or three little mechanics on you at a time (after showing you every single mechanic individually, earlier in the fight), but you get like at least a ten second warning on every mechanic, and then usually 20-30 seconds of pure downtime after it's over.

Personally, I thought that Sephirot put a lot more pressure on you mechanically, just due to the fact that (after that initial green/yellow color thing) the mechanics pretty much just flow into each other with no real breaks in between. (Not that Sephirot was particularly tough on mechanics, but I'm speaking specifically relative to Thordan)

Sephirot's definitely an easier encounter, but at the same time it's actually much more harsh on mechanical failures, as most result in instant death or a straight up wipe. If someone fucks up colours and dies during P3, that means at least one other person is gonna die, and if either of those people were healers, the fight very quickly spirals out of control. Fail to handle Earthshakers properly? Whoops, you're dead and you probably took one or more people with you. Fail to move for Pillar of Might in time? Whoops, you're super-dead. Fail the DPS check on Storm of Words? That's a wipe.
Thordan is, on the other hand, quite a bit more lenient in regards to mistakes. I might be forgetting something, but as far as I'm aware there's literally ONE instant wipe trigger in the entire fight outside of the hard enrage, and that only occurs if you fail to handle the Wild Charge-like mechanic near the beginning of the final phase, around the time the Heavenly Heel's coming out.
