I started playing back in season 2 when I had 220 ping on NA because my country didn't have a sever yet.
PvP matches were fucking terrifying to me because at the time I had never played any team game that lasted more than 5 or 10 minutes.
I was anxious all the time and felt really bad when I was doing poorly.

if you look at something like dota where they don't patch as frequently they still have metas every patch. they're just stuck in it for longer. (they also happen to have more viable champs because of harder synergies/counters, but that has nothing to do with rate of patches and everything to do with riot not wanting to have hard counters because of no fun allowed and having to buy your champs)
