Is there a way to make shaders work in Retroarch 1.2, specifically the VBA-M core?
It always hangs itself once I apply the settings, no matter how I set it up.
In 1.3.4, it does work but I don't want to use it because the netplay doesn't load up the correct save file despite given the correct path.
It creates a save file on my system that wasn't there before.
In Mario's Picross for example, it loaded up a save that had the first three in Easy solved when playing via netplay. Even when removing all save file data. But offline, it loaded up the correct save file which I think is weird.

When using my DS4 with MAME, if I hit up on the d-pad, it registers as up, down, etc. for both player 1 & 2 inputs, even though I only have one pad plugged in. I had a similar issue with RetroArch, where depending on the game, it thinks two controllers are plugged in so If it hit a certain button, it acts like a second player is present and will trigger an event or action based on that. How can I fix this so all my emulators can detect only one player?

VBA-M is totally deprecated by mGBA. But you should be playing GB/C games on Gambatte. And why, or how, are you playing GB Picross with netplay. And shaders should just werk on 1.2, but you should use a nightly build instead... I just don't understand.
>>
>>147703678
If you're using an XInput wrapper, like DS4Windows, check the 'Hide DS4 Controller' setting.
>>
>>147703704
I'm sorry for making such a confusing post.
Mario's Picross obviously doesn't work on VBA-M, I was just using it as an an example about the weird save file thing.
>And why, or how, are you playing GB Picross with netplay.
I am using gambatte obviously (VBA-M isn't even able to load *.gb/*.gbc files).
Also, it's comfy to play with a friend Mario's Picross, especially if you already did the puzzles and want to see him/her riddle it out. I like watching friends play games in general (although I dislike the idea of let's play videos).

Also, according to the libretro wiki, mGBA doesn't support netplay. So, there's that.

Is there any way to get shaders in RetroArch to work with Vulkan? They work just fine on GL.
>>
>>147702976
It can't magically conjure a save file out of thin air. For netplay the host's save data will be used, and if what you're trying to accomplish is watching a friend solve puzzles it sounds like you're connecting as client.
>>
>>147701948
I've been thinking of installing a launcher for PCSX2 so that games have their own custom config, is there any one that is particularly good or they are all similiar?
>>
>>147710037
I'm aware that it can't do that. Still it does despite how crazy that sounds.
Also I am actually the server, not the client. I have always been since my internet is the best among my friends.
It's not the save file from him either because it even loads after both him and I remove the save file from the directory that's specified in the config (I move it from ~/retroarch/saves to ~ while he actually deletes it).
It's also not only Mario's Picross. It's in all games that I've tried (which are quite a few).
It can't even be a misconfiguration on either side because of the removal of the save file.
Again, it does load the correct save file when playing offline. But not when playing with netplay enabled.

>>147710278
I don't think that there are any differences between the frontends for PCSX2.

I don't know what to tell you, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Maybe try letting your buddy host instead, the bandwidth requirements should be pretty much equal for both devices in RA netplay so I don't think it'll matter who's got the better connection.

It's a cheap little ARM SoC, even when emulating SNES you'll have to make sacrifices due to the lack of power.

If the emulator "just output the ROM image" you wouldn't be able to play it. 480p, I think, is as low as the Pi can go over it's composhit output.

I'm someone who was emulating on a PSP 1000 until the day it died and I replaced it with a 3000. Here's everything you need to know:

NES, Genesis/Sega CD/Game Gear, PSX, and Game Boy/Colour emulate perfectly

PC-Engine, WonderSwan, Neo Geo Pocket, and MSX emulate without major problems but you might experience some slight slow down in some fringe cases

GBA, SNES, and N64 are a major grab bag.

GBA is fine for like 99% of titles, and you can play the major games like Mother 3, Pokemon, Golden Sun, and Fire Emblem just fine. There might be some slow down in some games, you might need frame skip in others, or you might need to use 2~3 emulators to cover all your bases, but it's really fine for the most part

SNES shits the bed on special chip emulation, but you can play most titles without issue and at full speed. For reference, every major Nintendo, Square, and Enix release that doesn't use a special chip emulates at full speed without graphical issues. There's lots of options available to you too, such as a mixed software/hardware renderer, as well as a few forks of SNES9x, so you're pretty much set on everything that doesn't use a chip. It's way better than trying to emulate with BlargSNES on a 3DS, but nowhere near as good as trying to emulate with PocketSNES on a New 3DS.

As for the N64, believe it or not, there's a software interpreter available for it that doesn't suck major shit for Super Mario 64, Star Fox 64, and Super Smash Bros. The problem is that you'll need to play these titles muted without sound, and there are slowdowns occasionally. It's a neat proof of concept more than anything, but it does kinda work if you're really bored.

The only thing better than a PSP for emulation that's still a real handheld is a New 3DS, but the only thing the PSP beats it out in is PSX emulation, which is kind of a big deal for you.

Don't buy the Go. 3000 is the best model available as of 2016 barring the Vita

>The only reason I was considering the Go over it is because I've heard the 3000 has really bad interlacing issues. Was this fixed in later revisions? And if so, is there a specific version of the 3000 that I should look out for?
The interlacing issues on a 3000 are only noticeable if you get a magnifying glass and go looking for them. As for a specific version, no, not really. Later revisions of the 3000 can't have a "permanent" CFW solution, meaning you'll have to do the exploit every time you reboot your console. This is a non-issue because:

1.) Most people never actually turn their PSP's off and use the sleep mode function instead.

2.) Running the exploit takes an overwhelming 8 seconds to perform with a 100% activation rate.

3.) I might even be outdated on this info and there very well might be a permanent solution available by now.

You can "undo load states" now, so it's less of an issue.

If you want to remove the savestates just look for the "state" files in the content directory by default and delete those.

If you really value your saves you should back them up anyway, cloud storage is cheap these days, just get a dropbox or something like that.

No.. He's actually talented and has done great work.

The sad thing is that your emulator would be better if you actually viewed other people's code without bias.. Sitting around spreading silly gossip does you no good, Smh...

Don't even compare Byuu to someone as great as the legendary MarathonMan.. Unlike Byuu, MarathonMan knows how to write optimized code.

MarathonMan doesn't know shit which is why he ransacks oman archives and refactors angrylion hoping for better results instead of writing something from the ground up.

Lots of advertising, showboating and building circlejerks around yourself though does wonders for perception management, and gullible little emudev endlusers fall for it as predicted. Just mention some little pixiedust called 'cycle accuracy' and they all start salivating like Pavlov's dogs.

Who doesn't use oman's archive? Even though zilmar didn't personally use it, contributors even sent code derived from oman's to fix a few RSP bugs...

> refactors angrylion hoping for better results instead of writing something from the ground up.
Is there something wrong with optimizing a some bottleneck code for the time being? It's probably the fastest variant of Angrylion's.

Besides Angrylion, who has improved accuracy beyond using oman's archive? If you can't name anyone else, then you ought not to single out MarathonMan for heavily relying on oman's.

Some of his fanbase is silly / gullible but I can say the same for the rest.. People love to shill products, using their imagination instead of facts.

Hey guys, I feel completely retarded and was hoping you all could help me. I've got Windows 10 and I'm trying to install PCSX2 (which is apparently the only PS2 emulator worth discussing, according to the wiki?). When going through the setup, I get stuck in a loop. The graphics plugin tells me I need to update some directx libraries, which directs me to the Microsoft download page for the June 2010 roundup update for DirectX (supposed to be 9.0c, I think). I download and install it, it tells me it's successful, but the cycle repeats. I'll open up PCSX2 again and it tells me the same thing.

This isn't the first program that I ran into with these issues - Nestopia actually gave me the same problems, along with a bunch of other random programs. Someone on /g/ said that Windows 10 should come preinstalled with DirectX 9.0c, so I'm even more lost here.

Any help is genuinely appreciated - I've been itching for PS2 games and I would really not like to install Windows 7 or 8.1 on a separate partition just to run a single emulator.

Make sure the DX9 files are installed correctly, because the emu may not be detecting them so they may be in the wrong place or the like. Could have something to do with W10 because I never had that issue but maybe not.

Also you can try older versions and see if they work properly.

It also may be that the ini files for PCSX2 are not setting right so it doesn't think you have anything configured. Try installing it outside program files (x86) directories and just in a regular directory.

Also try using the binary version which doesn't "install" but rather just dumps the exe and a bunch of other files in whatever dir you want. The thing is I think you still need to go through some level of set up when you first run the exe anyway which may be where you're getting stuck anyway and not in the install process

>>
>>147989378
Generally it's a matter of "historical preservation" which tends to be a very anal affair.
>>
>>147990020
Would've really thought it was an issue of it not saving settings, but I guess it's also possible it's pointing you to the wrong DX files or something by accident. Also if you can use OGL you don't really need DX, but maybe PCSX2 won't even work without the DX files on Windows for some reason. I never tried not installing them and just using OGL
>>
>>147985135
The best possible output, it outclasses even RGB, you also don't get the processing delay that an N64 connected to an LCD would have.

>>147986367
You need to grab a console and get it modded if you don't want to get fucked in the ass by scalpers anyway, the price I said include the mod (150), the everdrive (150-200) and the console (50)
>>
>>147990523
I looked into that as well - PCSX2 can use OGL, but the plugin won't "initialize" until it sees the correct DirectX files. Very frustrating. Also sucks because despite PCSX2 being "plugin-based," I can't find any other plugins to use to replace the Direct-X based one.
>>
Well, here's an error I've never gotten before. Reeling up a fish in Animal Crossing and got this message.
>>
>>147991185
You might want to try installing DX9 and DX11 and the like independently of the pop ups from PCSX2 in case some unforeseen circumstance from the installer is now pointing to the wrong versions of DX due to a change in MS's site or in the way the program interacts with Windows 10 vs other Windows vers.

There's nothing better. It just means the game uses two cores instead of one AFAIK, which is going to be a lot faster on multicore CPUs

> Its broke for too many games and people wonder why they get black screens or shit breaks randomly.

First suggestion is the optimal one, just automatically turn it off for games they know it breaks to quelch user confusion.

ZSNES is not a real platform that needs to be preserved. If a hack was only made for it, it was a disposable short-term hack like a doggy bag and was never meant to be preserved.

Sometimes they work, other times they don't, been working all day today, felt like I could save just fine, nope turns out they weren't working at all, so now I have to do tons of stuff over again, which sucks ass.

First it was a texture and ROM issue with fatal errors hitting the switch in the Deku Tree to light the web, then we had weird black kokiri textures on Zelda's face, then you got every time you load state just to test some things out the sound completely cuts out, and the screenshot thing is still going about it's thing.

I'm trying to play a few of these, and I can't run the resulting patched rom, it just boots a black screen.

I thought it might be the snes9x and bzsnes libretro cores, but I tried it in standalone snes9x and got the same issue.

Am I not supposed to use a proper Super Mario World dump? Why would people not only base their hacks off of bad emulators, but also bad rom dumps?
>>
So I'm going on a trip to another city, and I'm preparing my RPi2 to play it sometimes.
PSX runs surprisingly well, no noticable slowdown in Toy Story Racer; however, SNES runs like shit: slowdowns even in SMW, I'm not even gonna touch SuperFX games like Yoshi's Island. I tried to select the overclock option in RetroPie, but that didn't help SNES much. Rendering resolution is set to 480p - so what the hell?

Also, I've never been into fighting games, but I've recently tried Street Fighter V, and it's super fun. How can I replicate that on an emulation machine? I assume it has to be some version of SF2 on MAME, but which one? There's so many of them, it's ridiculous

Well hopefully he still hangs around here sometimes and he'll see this post. Otherwise I'll have to understand how his shaders work.

I gave them a very quick look a while ago when I wanted to modify them to support the widescreen gameboy hack I was working on and they seemed complicated.
>>
>>148047648
The non-bordered version of the shader should just work for any resolution, even games that aren't 4 color Game Boy games, rendering them as grayscale.

The borderless version gives me those black bars at the left and bottom for some reason.

But that's not really a big deal, I'm more concerned about how to mimic the real pocketstation as closely as possible, I'm curious how he proceeded himself.

I guess I could ask my photographer friend to make a nice clean background image with her DSLR, then I only have to figure out the LCD shader itself.

That's because it's intended to be obvious, it's a coarse grained phosphor TV, like those small TV-VCR combos you used to see. 4K would just make the phosphors be more detailed.

What you're experiencing is what classicvania is. SCV4 is the illusion. CV1-3, Rondo and the like are the reality. That said I still like them but you have to get used to being limited in how you can attack. The subweapons are needed to supplement your ability to attack enemies above or below you due to the whip's limitations.

Just wait til you try Dracula X on SNES. That shit is even worse control-wise and the difficulty really emphasizes it compared to Rondo.
>>
>>148093737
Ok.

>>148093774
I mean yes and no. The first one I played was the GBA one with the cards. I liked it fine. Second was IV. But this combines the worst of everything. You walk slow, everything is downgraded, and your attack is limited.

>>
>>148095174
The GBA one isn't classicvania though, it's a SotN clone. although not a very good one IMO.

SCV4 gave you a taste of classic but with better movement and attack options. But "You walk slow, everything is downgraded, and your attack is limited" is a summary of CV1-3, Dracula X, Rondo, CV: The Adventure 1-2, and CV Legends.

You'll probably be fine with SotN and the games like it though. Your view on Rondo tends to be why SotN was made, because a lot of people did not like the way classic CVs played.

Hey, i'm having trouble with N-Rage 2.4 for PJ64.

When selecting XInput (which i found out just now that it had) i can't map the C-buttons to the face buttons. I'm using a DS3 with SCPDrivers.

I'm trying to make it work like the NGC versions of OoT and MM, where you could use the C-buttons with the C-Stick and with Z, X and Y buttons.

What happens is that the plugin doesn't record the ones that are set to "none" (top). But when playing OoT, the emulator recognizes when i press Y and B while not recognizing RT. Y is set to C-Left, B to C-Right and RT should've been C-Down.

Bottom pic is the set-up i used before going to selecting XInput, and the reason i believe for why the emulator is even recognizing my inputs at all if there is nothing recorded with the other option.
>>
>>148119110
Sameguy

I cleared the other input settings, setting them to default (keyboard),
and the XInput option still doesn't recognize when i press RT while recognizing B and Y.
The Right analog input works as expected.
>>
>>148107837
since you are here, what pj64 setup is used these days for your typical n64 emulation experience?

what has gone on with plugins, or is it still all the same?
>>
>>148119110
Is there any other option for input plugins for PJ64? You might try swapping it to see if its a problem with the plugin

Last resort you could use something like joy2key to work around it by mapping the action to a keyboard button and then mapping that kb button to the controller in j2k.
>>
>>148109253
relicensed it without anyone's say so, and then retroactively putting a disclaimer so that anyone who did code in the past, byuu now owns it and do what the hell he wants with it for now and the future.

>>
>>148119674
I'm not really into emulation, so i don't know much about plugins. I only dabbled a little with graphics trying to fix some crazy shit that happened.

I might just use j2k as i have it here. It is only one button after all.
>>
>>148109781
nah, my attitude can also be pretty toxic by the turn of the full moon as well.

>>
>>148123770

He is also a conman when it comes to his actual accomplishments.

He could not get smooth v-sync and non-crackling audio working like maister could, so since he can't just take maister's code and then claim sole copyright over it, what does he do? just remove the vsync option in the GUI and tell everybody to just buy a g-sync monitor and WASAPI because 'it's needed for smooth v-sync and non stuttering audio'.

The dude is a huge hack and underachieving phony. I am willing to bet all of the important work in bsnes was done by people ten times more skilled and accomplished than him, and he is just a useless rom hacking 'community manager' dude who honestly doesn't understand over 99% of all the code in bsnes because it's all code he had 'copyright assigned' to him.

A huge fraud and a conman that misses no opportunity to self promote himself, on places like Ars-Technica and reddit, as some kind of 'expert'.

>>
>>148125685
Hello SP.
>>
>>148125857

There are plenty of hackers left, probably more than there ever were, they just became a much smaller proportion of the overall user base and therefore less relevant as customers. Citra is not sold to hackers, it's sold to clueless retards who want to pirate WiiU games.

The very vast majority of computer users are just that, users. The concept of open source is very abstract and as far as they're concerned they don't get any obvious benefit from it. Therefore they prefer convenience over some abstract ideal. And why wouldn't they? What matters is how much it costs them and if it does what they want.

Of course those end users are hurt in the long run because they end up with stale emulators that nobody can improve and overpriced pieces of shit in the android store. But the connection to closed source is not direct or obvious so the cycle continues.

The only way open source alternatives could take the lead is if we start coming up with superior emulators, like the way Linux is preferred over other closed source kernels in many industries. It shouldn't be too hard, right? With open source everybody can contribute, we can factor all the common code in reusable libraries, focus on improving things instead of figuring out how to make money. We can take other people's code, reuse and improve it. Easy.

But we can't really do that with emulators because the vast majority of emudevs are just bad at working together. Many of them are bad at working alone, even. The code quality of your average emulator is absolutely abysmal (like, some of the worse codebases I've seen in my life, and I've seen quite a few). Most emudevs prefer to reinvent the wheel poorly instead on focusing on a single problem at a time. Some prominent emudevs don't even use VCS.

Cemu and ePSXe are not killing open source emulation, we're just very good at shooting ourselves in the feet.

But hey, why am I wasting time posting here anyway, I could be creating a new ROM format or something.

Blame the sudden flood of non-technical people. 15 years ago an average computer user had some sort of technical knowledge, but these days everything is dumbed down so the corporations can make money off the technology retarded who don't care what goes on under the hood as long as they are entertained. They are the ones shaping the future of computing, not the people with actual knowledge - most of them sold out and work for the man now.

I think general purpose computers as we know them are going to die in a decade, it's already happening with latest Mac OS which doesn't allow unsigned apps by default. We're going to end up with locked down computers only able to run whatever the big corporation allows on the app store.

How true is this for older platforms?
>>
>>148144743
It depends
Some standalone emulators have more features than the libretro implementation. For example, bluemsx-libretro doesn't support disk games.
But for the most common platforms (NES, Genesis, SNES...) the Retroarch version is fine

What settings do you prefer to use for games with prerendered backgrounds, like PS1 survival horror games?
>>
>>148146146
I'd like to use that one guy's selective xBR that identifies models and excludes them, but I can't find it.
>>
>>148146146
Why are some parts of this background more pixellated than others?
>>
>>148142089
Keep telling yourself that. People get triggered by things he says because he tends to be right and it hits close to home. This gets under the skin of said emudevs and their fanbois. If he were just a meme, that wouldn't happen.

Also name one bad thing SP has actually done that didn't involve some worthless forum/IRC debate.
>>
>>148145818
Too bad. But at this point it would be better to just port Openmsx instead.

>End users are the real problem. They don't contribute, yet have the nerve to whine about emulation. If they offered help, the scene would be better today.

End users are end users. It's like a movie director complaining that the audience is not helping creating the film. Not everybody is a coder. Only a tiny minority of users will ever contribute to an open source project, emulation or not.

>Ya right. Let's see you do better.

Doing worse would be a greater feat.

>Nothing wrong with reinventing the wheel. Especially if other people's code is "abysmal". Why use sprintf() , when I can write my own version that's 10x's faster?

I can't tell if you're being serious with the end of your sentence there. Is your emulator bottlenecked by sprintf? Because if it is I don't think optimizing this function is the answer.

Anyway, it's not so much about not wanting to reuse bad code, it's about going out of your way to be incompatible with the rest of the world. Then the task of maintaining all of that code (emulator core, frontend, audio and video code, multiplatform code etc...) becomes too high, the code rots and the devs ends up giving up on it and nobody picks it up. Byuu is terrible for this but he's not the only one. Just focus on one thing and do it right, very few people have the skill and commitment to wrIte a high quality, multiplatform, good GUI "full stack" emulator. I don't understand why so many try.

"Hey, I want to write a spreadsheet application, let's start by designing a microkernel and threading model" -- emudevs, apparently.

What's the best current way to play N64 games? Shit's been bothering me for a while.
>>
>>148148038
There isn't a single answer, N64 emulation is still a mess. What game do you want to emulate?
>>
>>148146146
Native resolution.
>>
>>148146146
2x resolution + CRT shader
>>
Dokapon Kingdom (wii) freaks out if you don't have a wiimote connected. Is there a cheatcode or something else I could do to make it not do the check or be tricked into thinking there is a wiimote connected? I want to play the game with dolphin netplay.
>>
>>148148120
I have a few games in mind:

SM64
OOT
Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon
Bomberman 64
Paper Mario

And that's pretty much it
>>
>>148148465
mupen64plus-libretro (Retroarch) should be alright for those games.

Bleeding-edge builds compiled from source at certain intervals every day. They contain all the latest features as they come, as well as any potential bugs and breakage that come with them. They're not meant for the average end user. Rather, they're there if you want to try out the latest changes, as well as file bug reports. If you have a setup that works, I would stick with it until they fix something that was bothering you or they add a feature you find appealing, and even then, be ready to keep a backup just in case.

>>148148465
Isn't MNSG super broken?
>>
>>148150903
Well, I remember a few years ago in Project64 the intro sound didn't sync with the graphics.
>>
First time emulating with the Dolphin, and it works fine for everything except that when emulating Wii games, I can't move the cursor over the entirety of the screen. It only goes a bit in the middle then all the way to the bottom, but can't go near the sides or top.

Only thing I found on this is something about resolution, but not sure if that's actually going to work.

Funny story behind that. An anon from /v/ said he paid $400 for it and said he didn't wanna ever look at it, and I won it in a giveaway he did.

It was fun.

And by fun I mean the giveaway. :^(

I've never seen SP really say anything I vehemently disagreed with. Except maybe that his front end was better than stand alones.

You should probably get rid of Cortana before she reports back to MS you're pirating vidya games

Some guy on /v/ has been posting a thread about exactly that almost daily for a week or two now.

Try looking there.

No it's not, FuSa gamepad is quick and easy.

Even my PS3 picks acknowledges my PSP as a controller with FuSa.

No comment on retiring.

the core is stripped of a ton of files needed for it to run properly (which ship with blueMSX). I would assume that this is done for the same reason ppsspp is stripped of needed files:
autism
>>

Those files were all unnecessary and just frontend cruft.

Are there other emudevs with similar unconditionnal fanboys? I mean, even Byuu fanboys are sometimes criticizing him but our resident SP #1 fanboy is 100% devoted to his god. Is this real love? Ordinary teenager's fascination for controversial edgy people?

Like most people with inferiority complex, SP does not love himself that much though, this looks much more like a secret admirer dreaming of becoming SP best friend.
