Not to turn this into XI nostalgia induced rant, but I think the biggest difference XI and XIV to me so far is how easy it is to get anywhere in XIV's world map. It really detracts from how large the world could feel. I thought I'd like flying mounts, but I don't really think they've added much other than making the new, huge 3.0 zones feel as small as ARR zones.

Balmung and Gilgamesh are the main /xivg/ server and are both packed to bursting, so they're locked for character creation.
Excalibur is another one that a lot of /xivg/ players seem to use.
Transferring costs about 18USD I think, and you can transfer to full servers.
I'm playing on Leviathan, which has a small /xivg/ presence, but mostly normies.

It's actually really pathetic. The world is already small, and 3.0 felt just as small because of flying. The mobs aren't at all dangerous and the ones that are 10 more levels than me are actually the ones that pose a threat. Yoshi said the world would become more dangerous in 3.0, but he lied. It's not important anyway since they're adamant on making open world content irrelevant, and stick to instanced ones.

The 1.0 version wasn't even this bad when it comes to the zones, even though it's a copypaste bonanza.

After growing up/getting a life/job/etc i can say with certainty that i absolutely do not miss waiting 15+ minutes on a taxi to get somewhere like in WoW. I want to be able to log in and be slaying internet dragons within 5 minutes.There are plenty of ways to make the world feel big without gutting convenience like the aetherytes. Every zone still has choco porters and tons of hidden secret areas with lore tidbits to speculate on if you just want to explore the zones, especially the heavensward ones. Azys Lla was barely touched by the msq for example, so there's a shitton of islands and stuff with walkin-able doors and stuff you'd never see otherwise. There's plenty to do in the overworld, just the majority of it isn't killing mobs admittedly. Grab a friend and go to the edges of the map exploring sometime, it's good fun.

Just because it's there hanging out in the overworld doesn't mean it's content. XI was good that it had both that and the quests and content to back up the world. I dunno, I didn't even have any difficulty with mobs over level 55.
Back in the original version, there were mobs over the level cap. Mor Dhona was barely explored because it was the most dangerous place at the time with level 70 or more mobs on it, now it's just full of stuff below 50. Even the Black Shroud back then was dangerous because of over leveled elementals on the starting areas.

I'm honestly curious as to why they decided to get away from that.

Never once in my argument did I say the overworld was content. I was merely stating that you can still quite literally make the world feel huge. IF you want to walk from Southern Thanalan to the Sea of Clouds you most certainly can. Porters exist in each zone and each zone's zone lines are connected. The zone loading times may take you out a bit because the map sizes are pretty garbage but you can still walk to point B from point B without a single teleport. All you're doing in the overworld otherwise is fetch/kill quest #over 9000 because that's as deep as questing in this game gets.

I'm with you on the sentiment that there's nothing wrong with having at least some optional, out of the way hard as hell mobs in the open world. Even if the excuse is 'we don't want people who don't have time to use their brain to be hindered,' then just leave them out of the main areas. Not having at least some sort of optional pockets of tough mobs, maybe beastman outposts, is disappointing.

I don't think the game needs less convenience for transportation for it to feel bigger at all. This game has admittedly small zones, every region were cut down into part.
Just making the place dangerous that it hinders you from going further in some places unless you have help, being full of mysteries and secrets (like secret areas unmarked by the map back in the original version)

Although I have to say, they implemented flying so poorly.

Honestly the aether currents is one of the best implementations of flying i've seen. Getting flying as you finish a zone is infinitely better than getting it down the road as a huge money sink at level cap. I gotta agree with you on aether currents. It was a good way to handle it, but I still don't like the concept of flying through zones since it makes the world feel small, but at the end of the day I don't mind it at all since it's convenient when I wanna do some gathering.

Sometimes I don't know why they continue making new zones when they remain irrelevant after doing the MSQ.
You can only do few things like gathering, maps, beast tribe dailies I guess. Exploration counts as it's only remnant of relevancy and I don't think FATEs are event allowed to be considered since they're so awful.

Wha'chu hunting 'em for anyway? I mean specifically. I actually really enjoy hunting, but that's mostly because I had a good group of dedicated hunters to teach me the basics of it, when I picked it up. I had some really good times doing it overall. It's a simple and kinda mindless activity, but nonetheless a fun part of the game, I think, but then again what do I know; I think I'm like the only person that actually enjoys doing the beast tribe quests in the whole thread. I remember hunting non-stop for some time, after getting into it, and even doing 20 or so hours long sessions as well.
