>Now I'm alone for like a week
>Still really sick
>Fever spikes throughout last night, first night alone
>Weird fucking dreams and/or hallucinations again
>Remember very little, except a vision of my floor being completely being overrun by rats
>Also memory of trying to keep them away from crawling into my mouth
>Reading lovecraft right before getting fever is a bad fucking idea

>About 11am this morning I wake up again, fever is gone but everything is soaked in sweat
>Laugh it off
>Put my feet on the ground
>Something soft under my feet, kick it away, fucking pillow or something
>Coughing is way worse today
>Suddenly freak out about wtf I stepped on
>Nothing soft on the floor in my bedroom now
>Nope

>Go out to the store for some cough drops and microwave pizza(Since cooking when sick sucks)
>Come back like 6 hours ago, overhear my downstairs neighbhours speaking
>Apparently their cat has been spazzing out to the point of jumping out of a window
>Second floor so nothing came of it
>Try to laugh it off, its a male cat and it's cat mating season so
>(My cat used to do similar weird shit during the summers)
>Carrying a rather big bag when I enter my appartment
>Something brushes against my feet
>Drop the fucking bag and almost scream, jump into the kitchen and grab a knife
>Just a wet-boot(don't know the english name) in the hallway
>Fucking hell

>Put the food in the fridge, eat some food
>Feeling alright, so I dev for abit
>But the pipes are fucking rattling
>They do it sometimes, but they've been at it for like 3 hours now
>Realize the boot somehow moved from a closet in another room to the hallway
>Can hear the cat downstairs doing those weird cats howls

Okay yeah I'm freaking out abit. Have the progress I made today.

Alright, so, my project.

The idea is to create a visual novel/adventure hybrid with a horror theme. It'll have many puzzles and some minigames too.

It's a story about four soldiers and their prisioner lost in the middle of a haunted forest that covers a group of mountains that, for reasons unexplained, hosts thousands of bloodthirsty abominations. There's no hope left for survival but one: bringing the radio to the peak of the highest mountain and sending an SOS.

I'm using Unity and Fungus to build it and Photoshop to create the assets. The game's visual assets are being made with collage/photomanipulation since I can't draw for shit and artists are assy to work with.

Picture related was already posted, it's where it all begins.

I'll be posting some more stuff in a few minutes. I don't know about posting videos since it's not a very action-y game...

You'll be fine. Sounds like regular every day mixed senses in the desert of the real.

Your progress reminds me of Evangelion somehow. Looks really ominous and cool.

ALSO

Thrust balancing is finally demo day ready. It gives "perfect" control even with asymmetrical and unexpected thrust layouts like the one in the webm, which isn't possible with just-take-the-sign PID control. Keep in mind there's no drag or auto-brake so I still drift around a bit.

This is a sample of how the sprites look. I apply a series of filters that creates this hand-drawn painting effect. It's the way I found to hide edition marks and/or upscale the images I use.

Since I use open source imagery because I don't want copyrighted shenanigans, I resort to using lots of vintage photographs that aren't always in a decent resolution.

I'm pretty satisfied with the results tho I recognise the limitations.

I do have something like an ambient light but it's very subtle. I kinda gave up yesterday and just left everything as it was instead of trying to keep tweak it. Here's with the ambient doubled in intensity, which might be decent. There's probably a sweet spot somewhere. I want to add fog to the forest eventually which should also make it slightly less dark.

But still, I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to proper lighting. I need an artist dude to figure all this stuff out for me.

Finished programming a portal I don't have a model for it yet or art but its functional and allows you to get to higher tiles that you couldn't reach.

Took me like a month to finally figure this out, because desu boku's source code breaks the gameplay if he goes up at all, so iv been making stairs, ladders, and elevators for so long trying to figure out if the bug couldn't happen with some other solution.

Now finally it dawned on me that teleportation is the way so he is able to reach higher area's but still fall down.

Later in the game I plan on introducing a new puzzle cube that is the portal cube, and you have multiple ones to move your portals etc.

Also made the old toony rifle trap. The point of this trap is to trip the laser and the gun will fire so you have to block it with the cursor shield or dodge it. (Not sure if I will keep a colored laser pointer on it, or just leave it without one so the player will trip it while its invisible and get shot at).
>>
>>147375765
I'd advise against penalizing the dodges and jumps.
It may feel more realistic, but in practice it's frustrating because real fatigue gives you feedback, this would feel random and frustrating.

Anyone have experience with xna/monogame? I'm sitting here trying to make a control for winforms so I can actually write an editor and I think I can feel my brain cells dying. Should I eat my own shit and switch to unity/gms or is it worth it to hold out and go through the initial grind so I can stay low-level and multi-platform without having to worry about engine limitations and including a ton of stuff I don't need?

I'm pretty good at programming but I'm not a pro and I feel like I can skip a lot of the low-level things and reinventing the wheel, but I've already committed myself to this and I'm not sure if I'm ready for the limitations of an engine. Pretty retarded but thoughts nonetheless?

I fixed the problem where when I was checking attack/movement ranges, it was using the center of enemies. This was fine for the smaller spiders, but the giant spider would get right up in your face since the target distance was nearly the same size as his radius. So now it takes the radius into account, and they stand at a reasonable distance away.

Welp, Big Jim is done.

I mean, he probably needs some retuning and his animations need polish, but he can be killed, which means his objective can be cleared and his Tier can be advanced through to Tier Infinite.

And that was my criterion for releasing a demo, so I'll do it.

I'll continue to polish his fight (particularly his stomp attack which I need to work on), the Magplate Stadium level design (I have a lot of targets to place), and add more particle effects, IK curves and training mode indicators to player animations and such until Friday, then I'll cook down a demo for demo day.

>>
>>147380523
Well, there's really no problem with that, shitposters will always shitpost and there's a lot of people who are legitimately envious of others, so they will fling shit in your direction.

It's all about wading through the shit and interacting only with the ones providing legit advice/discussion.

Then there's the fact that people tend to exaggerate their emotions in this board, so instead of saying, "x could doesn't look good because of y", they sometimes go with something like "x is shit and you should learn how to do y". This is perfectly fine because although the language is harsh, the advice is perfectly valid. Anyone who can't handle getting advice this way would probably be better off in any of the hundreds of hugbox forums for game dev

I got you, anon.

Mixels = Mixed pIXELS, when pixel art is inconsistent because assets are scaled up/down, so the pixel scale isn't consistent across all assets. Some have 2x2 pixels, some have 3x3, some have 4x4

Rixels, as you might have guessed, = Rotated pIXELS, and refers to when pixel sprites are rotated using modern game engine tech rather than new pixel frames being drawn for these poses.

In both cases, the illusion that the art is actually fitted to a pixel grid is destroyed and it just looks like a modern flash-style 2D animation system with pixel art sprite sheets (I mean, that's what most modern pixel art games are, but you could at least pretend it wasn't).

This works in the event that agdg doesn't have active resident psychopaths which unfortunately hasn't always been the case. Actually I "only" have a 760 and 8GB of RAM, the machine isn't ultra top of the line.

The thing is, I have a beast of a CPU (I7) for audio work and the game is very frequently CPU bound. Which is part of the reason I'm hoping nativization squeezes some frames out. Even people with killer gaming machines rarely go above an I5.

I went to school for audio engineering, music is my original passion. I have a DAW to shame yours, basically. Some people spent thousands on Les Pauls, I can run 15 simultaneous Reaktor instances at 6ms ASIO latency.

Which is to say, my CPU needs are well in excess of typical game CPU needs. The only machines that have need of an I7 are CAD workstations and audio stations.
>>
>>147383016
Is Unicron your first Fundam?
>>
>>147384275
Yeah, I made some pretty substantial changes to collision on those damn traps. Actually I'm gonna switch the big sweeping lasers with the newly-designed projectile launching traps which will make the collision better.

I'm also still running "Ticking Zones" to minimize the number of ticking actors, and my changes to hurtbox detection and Target HP work have greatly reduced the tick cost on damage-taking entities.

But still that CPU hit is real and deep as a motherfucker. It's the Recast navmesh constantly updating, the number of AI-running actors, and probably to a lesser extend the BP interop latency (this is worst on the player character).
>>
>>147384495
I'd hope not, Unicorn is possibly the worst place to start since UC-universe stuff is pretty thoroughly complicated and needs lots of context.

I know nothing about Gundam and I've been meaning to get into it for quite a while now. I even have some of them downloaded already, but I never touched them.

The thing is that there's way too many shit about it and I, being the autistic Lorefag that I am, feel afraid that I may look into a series that is a continuation/prequel/another dimension of another season. I've read about it online, but I hardly ever give a fuck for the amount of time it takes me to make a list of the things to watch.

So, being a complete newbie to Gundam, where should I start?

Yo fags, I want to start making some, most probably, shit games but whatever. I'm kind of tired of working with engines, as much as I love them because it makes life easier, I want to learn to make game from scratch, I'm currently learning Java Programming, will start taking some classes for introductory to intermediate level of programming, until then I'll devour as much information I can about java programming from youfuck and stackoverflow.

Is everyone making games in engines, is it a good idea to like make gaem from scratch or making your own engine?

What programming language do you feel/think is best for vidya?

What's the purpose of these 48 hours demos? Doesn't that limit the overall game quality/content?

And, one last question since I'm new here.

Are all demos posted open-source (as in, possible to read the code or edit them in *insert engine here* to see how they were made?

Thanks and fuck you.

sorry for the shitty video framerate, i haven't messed with a lot of screen recorders, so i just used vlc for this. it's just going to be a short little 3d maze game. but i'll be damned if it's not going to be the most beautiful maze game you will ever see.

there's going to be six levels, with a theme change every 2 levels
all of them have already been modeled, i just need to work on their textures as well as enemies, door keys, traps, and maybe some other stuff. there's a tiny bit of the first (unfinished) level in the video

at the end of the video is the final boss. i just need to finish sculpting then move onto retopology and bake the detail into a normal map.

also, the whole thing is made in blender game engine, which tells you how much of a thing this game isn't going to be. like i said, babby's first game.

>Is everyone making games in engines ...
Most people are probably using engines, but despite the shitposting, I don't think it's a waste of time to learn how to program shit yourself. Sure, your game might end up simpler, but you might be able to still do unique things regardless of whether you used an engine or not.

>What programming language do you feel/think is best for vidya?
C / C++ / C#

>What's the purpose of these 48 hours demos? Doesn't that limit the overall game quality/content?
To actually produce games. It encourages people to actually finish stuff, instead of letting ideas brew and end up nowhere. Quality can vary - but often, short, to-the-point games come out of stuff like this.

>Are all demos posted open-source
Posted where? Yes, in general, if something accompanies a tutorial, it will be open-source, but you have to be more specific.

I don't usually answer these bottom
>>
>>147386492
The only series which are connected are generally stuff in the UC universe. If you want a really interesting start that's sadly pretty much the single best thing in the Gundam franchise, 0080 is amazing. You need pretty much no information about Gundam to get into it, it takes place at just about the beginning of the main timeline and it has a really concise and well-done message. If you like some cool battle scenes and a really really bad love plot, 08th MS Team is very entertaining and watching the original 0079 movies can be worth it if you want to get a feel for the very start of things.
Generally, I'd suggest watching stuff as it was produced due to the fact that a lot of it builds off ideas in previous series (0083, despite taking place before Zeta in the time line, sets things up that you'd already know about if you watched Zeta).
>>
>>147386557
>is everyone using an engine
generally yeah, even if you're from scratch not having some underlying engine makes it very hard to progress past the pong stage

>language for vidya
anything object oriented works fine for vidya, Java is good

>48 hour "demos"
if you're referring to 48 hour game jams, which I think you are, then they are mainly a good way to go through the entire game making process in a short amount of time. It does limit the content, but quality can be achieved through having a tight scope and being disciplined - both things that game jams teach which are useful for regular gamedev

>open source
most jams require code to be open source, that doesn't necessarily mean you'll just be able to open the game in whatever engine as assets might still be missing

fuck you too

I'd say start at the original Mobile Suit Gundam. The art and animation is a bit dated, but it really is the best starting point.

Alternatively, you could start with an AU. The AUs generally do not span multiple shows, but i think they are worse overall.

Have fun, anon.
>>
>>147386492
New gundams are all self-contained (except unicorn). So just pick one of those, like 00. For introduction to UC watch the 0079 movies.

>>147386557
You're using an engine but haven't learned introductory programming? Engines aren't a way to skip programming, rather a way to make development fast enough to finish a respectable game in one lifetime.

The only programming language I know is Python and no engine uses python programming as far as I know so yeah I mostly just fucked around with engine tools and assets to become familiar with them, making simple shit like art, movement, etc. limited to the engine without programming.
I never learned proper programming and made something useful with python for example, I'm mostly an artist but now I want to expand my knowledge into this area of game making as well.

He has way more money to make by keeping Steam to himself than selling it to someone else or take any other marketing decision. Notch made minecraft, sales went up, he earned a lot of money, then the sales went down as people had the game already had to reason to buy it again therefore selling the I.P. to someone else is the last bit of money he could make off of minecraft at that point, but I think the best decision notch could take at that point if he gave a shit about the game and didn't want to make something else, would've been to release expansion packs of content and shit like that since updates aren't profitable, actually, they lose you money but hey.

From a business point of view I'd say so, though purely as an indie dev all money aside that's subjective.

I know everyone loves to shit on him for selling out and all that but honestly if I had been in his position I'd have probably done the exact same after Minecraft became what it did.

I'd love to be in the same sort of situation and then just duck out of the public eye and make shit I wanna make for fun and put it out anonymously without having to worry about it being a success or failure, since money is theoretically never an issue for me again.

Maybe throw money to people here and there for Kickstarters and projects I want to see made, stuff like that.

I think that copyrights are important, as they are your only means of keeping a property be it physical or not.
But a non-competition clause does the video game industry more wrong than not having that sort of of thing.
What would this clause even contain? Making it illegal to make a game that looks like the IP you just sold although it doesn't contain the name or assets? Make the whole genre for you illegal to work it? Does it affect you only? Does it affect your company?
I mean, I understand why they would do that but hey, if you buy a batch of master-crafted weapons from a blacksmith for you to re-sell for a profit, you better be ready to have some competition from the dude YOU BOUGHT THEM FROM?!

Harvest Moon.
Those games were mostly all good. Started going downhill. Then the Japanese company that makes Harvest Moon stopped working with the English company that translated the games for the west. That company owns the name Harvest Moon so they started making their own games with the Harvest Moon title but they were complete shit.
The Japanese company still makes Harvest Moon games, but they're called Story of Seasons in the west now, they've gotten moderately better but not as good as the older Harvest Moon.

I have a shitty monitor and an expensive tablet

if I can things look good in both then it probably looks good. with audio you'd also do the same
>>
So I'm gonna try to make a new project. I know for sure that I want to make it a pure stealth game, but I'm not sure if I should make it top down like Metal Gear or side scrolling like Mark of the Ninja.

I think if I go platformer, I won't need to worry about complex AI and detection since I'm still relatively new to devving but I'll also be limited in movement options.

Ideas/opinions?

It's not good for the people playing games, but they're buying something in the specific understanding that you cannot go work on a competitor anytime soon. Usually it's something like 5 years. This assures that the product they purchased cannot be devalued by people working on it before.

platforms that move up to certain death appearing randomly
you need to stay in the middle of the screen without falling into the void or touching the top
points accrue for as long as you don't die and platforms either get faster or more sparse

not really? blender provides scripting in python. alternatively, if you don't know any python, you can use what are known as logic bricks. they are like a visual representation of small snippets of code that you can plug into each other and change their settings to do various things.

also, if you're still working on the game and you want to see how it will play without exporting, you can run the game either in an embedded or standalone player. on export, blender will pack the necessary files needed to generate the player for the game in a folder that you specify so that it will all be self-contained. however, you can only publish to the platform that you are running. so you will probably have to export from within a virtual machine if you want to publish to any other operating system.

I doubt my space game will be ready by Demo Day, but I've been considering putting together a demo for my knight game, which I am still working on! Actually just added bows recently.

What are the rules for Demo Days? How much playable content does there need to be? I've got the game to a point where it can generate a complete playable dungeon with an exit door, enemies, shops, traps, etc. Would that suffice for a demo?

I wonder how real games implement quests. Surely they don't just hard-code each one. So far this building-block solution is working for me but I dunno if it'd let me do anything complex like what Witcher 3 did. I want to add a "visit this location" QuestTask at some point, or an "interact with this object" QuestTask.

One cool thing is I can re-use this system for a bestiary-type thing where if you kill 5 wolves, you get 500 exp, or something like that.

Don't do it.

Any work that keeps you poor like that you will learn to hate ($30/day is seriously poor) Get a low tier job at least ($9-$12/hr) and do gamedev with the comfort of knowing you will survive even if your game doesn't take off.

When you take a gamble on something and really need it to pay off life has a way of keeping you from winning. When you find sure footing and no longer need to win your long shots, life has a way of giving you wins.

Sometimes I think if Gogem just got a job he would finally find success with his games.

You will not make a hit game.

There is no money here.
There is no money here.
There is no money here.
There is no money here.
There is no money here.

If you do end up making stable money off of gamedev, it won't happen immediately. You'll need to git gud first. If you can make good games, you have to wait a while to build up a loyal fanbase for your games. If start making money off your first few good games, and keep making games, your income per month will follow an exponential growth curve. Don;t get excited, exponential grows slow at first. You'll spend years making nothing, before you have enough games to survive on, but if you have a small catalog of consistently good games, money will keep trickling in for years. You cannot go into this and immediately make $30 a month. You can """"""invest"""""" a few years into making a few games, and probably get a small income after that.

Lookup "the long tail" and "1000 true fans". Read Jeff Vogel's stuff, or listen to his pricing talk.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvtFx4LBA5I.

Honestly, a job is a good place to be while making those few games.

I have 1 mobile game out now but I really fucked on the marketing aspect of it so I learned my lesson on that atleast. I have about 5 months of money saved up(6 if I squeeze it) so while that's not a few years you say I'll need...it's something.

I dunno, I just want to try my best to make it work. I think I have some really good and fun idea's that people would enjoy though. But I do need to stay realistic...

I think maybe I'll take 3 months instead of the full 5 just dedicated to making games. I'll hopefully have released 2 more games within that time (since I'll be doing nothing all day but deving) but if I see that I'm not even close to making any kind of decent money with it, then I'll just start looking for a job again and have 2 months to do it.

There was a bug where if you dont do a input movement into a star portal you fall straight down, and through the floor, so I added a single spike trap that is for the player to learn the hardway they need to decide a direction to fall in while diving into a portal instead of fixing the bug :')

I also changed the portals to be stars, and added little stars to show the player where the trigger tiles are for it.

I"m still researching on how to make my star portals cuter, if you have any ideas let me know.

I can see people already more or less covered it but yeah, going into indie game development as a full-time thing to try and get a stable income (let alone one you can solely live off of even temporarily) is a huge mistake.

Do it part time if you want to bolster the income of a normal job, do it for fun, do it full time but at a studio that's actually paying you, but don't make the mistake of jumping straight into trying to "make it" without any sort of back-up plan.

Success stories are few and far between, and even more so now that the indie scene has boomed like it has with everyone convinced they've got the next WoW or Minecraft or whatever, so it's really just not worth it.

If you decide to risk it all and go for it anyway and end up being successful then that's awesome, but the likelihood of that happening is very very very low.

>>147401610

I need to pass 3 ints to my frag shader.
1 from each vert.

So i make an int[3] on the frag shader. And i would fill it from the vert shader.

So in the vert shader i need to know the index of the array to fill.
So i can do my current vert index mod 3.

But i index my verts... So gl_VertexID just gives me the data from my indexarray.

Why would any one want this.

i wouldn't know too much about that considering i haven't made a 2d game before or used game maker.

one thing to note is that the blender game engine is a 3d engine. so you would have to set up your assets with that in mind (set camera to be orthographic, make sure models don't move along the third axis you're excluding, etc.)
also, since it's a general-purpose 3d engine, it's not built with any particular game in mind and therefore isn't optimized to aid in the production of any one type of game.

i suppose that's why most people just use the blender game engine for prototyping and then move on.

How's this for a logo? I like the "WALL" cause each letter (except A) looks like it has little walls built from the ground up.

I don't like the "THE" though. It looks weak and weird next to the rest.

(game footage: https://youtu.be/V9wpbujA8PA)

Tomorrow I'm gonna work on the gigantic boss. I might make it a giant and spooky Pablo Escobar chucking packs of pure crack cocain towards the US border. I might also go another route and make a giant generic asian businessman with a pointy hat since China is seen as this giant economic threat from overseas. It would look pretty cool but it would clash with the mexican border environment. I think if I focus on keeping it simple, making the giant boss model and animation only (little actual functionality) I might have enough time to make the trailer and greenlight in the evening. Otherwise I might very well just go for a tuesday evening release since I heard there's the most traffic on tuesday nights and people will probably all be out celebrating tomorrow night so no votes from these people.

you'll have to keep shooting while monitoring for powerups and the presence of a bunch of enemies with special powers (bypassing the wall for example and having to shoot them down).

I'm not going the complex tower defense route but rather the retarded but action oriented play style.
