Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

When I make some minor changes to the Communicant it's showing up as a commander to be recruited instead of a unit. How do I fix this?

As Pythium you can get from S2 to S4 with a skullcap and coin fairly easily, at which point you only need a measly 32 communicants to master enslave. I mean, they'd all die after like, one round of casting, but you could still do it. With 64 you'd half the fatigue cost to 50 and ensure your communicants survive.

Most games run pretty smoothly desu, I'm quite surprised Evropa had such issues with players not submitting the right pretender and then others backing someone fucking up. Yes I could roll back but the shit I've gotten for ever rolling back turns has been way worse. /domg/ is pretty hostile at the best of times, people here are impossible to please and are quick to shit on admins who do all the administrative work of setting up and maintaining games while trying to enjoy it themselves.

AI'ing people as an example is a pretty pain in the ass thing to do if you're playing the game. You have to get someone else to install maps/mods etc. and then set AI and send the turn off. This means you have to have good friends willing to do it and you have to be sharp about getting it done quickly to avoid stales. If you're knocked out then you've got to maintain a game you're not even playing which has happened a couple of times to me. Watching the /domg/ thread is mandatory too and I have to keep an eye on it 24/7 just to make sure I can keep the games running without issue.

At the moment I run three games here, one Evropa I've mentioned. I won't mention the others incase some aspie decides to quit out of the other 2. I wouldn't put it past some of the players here.

Here's a partial list of the games I've run here:
ScrubOff
ScrubsAnonymous
ExtremeWays
TornVale
Haerland
Persia
CastleDoctrine

There's like another 6-7 games I've run through to the end who's names escape me and probably another 3 which ended prematurely due to player fuck ups similar to Evropa. By all means hate on me but you've never actually obligated to join any game I run and ultimately if you don't like what's hosted you can always host yourself.

If you really do hate me so, avoid all games that are run on Worthy Heroes 1.23 alone as a mod. That's how I run my games mod wise and it's a good way these days to ID me as an admin.

I've admined games here before and never been shit on. Admining is honestly easy - the only time consuming part is setting it up, and even that is very minor. If you're being shit on, it means that you've manged to fuck up a pretty simple job. If it happens repeatedly, you're -probably- doing something fundamentally wrong. Evropa and CastleDoc are pretty good signs that this is the case with you.

I was told by Pangaea that he was having issues with turn sending like Machaka did who had to quit because turns weren't sending to Llama successfully. Apologies though, I do think rolling back in general is a mistake, it causes more problems than it fixes.
>>
>>147284104
A couple of admins here have shut the game down entirely when they start losing. I know of one guy in particular who when losing set the turn time to the max he could and just let the game run with impossibly long turns. Another who just force hosted over and over until he won at a certain point. There's plenty of bad admins here.
>>
>>147284104
YEAP, after doing 48 hour turns pretty much immediately with extensions for his friend. Hell, he was even defeated then when someone staled twice took them over. I'm not sure what happened in the end but currently it's LITERALLY JUST PAN AND THE AI.

>>147284210
He didn't stale that turn, he attacked Ermor and got his ass handed to him. Rolling back when NO-ONE STALED is stupid unless something went majorly wrong with llamaserver, which it didn't. Hell, it's a dead game and you haven't removed it from llamaserver, you have one job dude ONE JOB.

>>
>>147283213
Multiple people in Evropa asked you for a restart, first on turn 1 when only 2 people sent their turns, then on turn 2 when it was discovered that two nations were 1 province from each other. You answered "haha, you just want to get a better position, so the game won't restart. you're free to make a new game and AI yourself". The most disgusting thing about you that now you're spewing "I'm the misunderstood good guy" bullshit (even using cringe-inducing Churchill's pic) while telling everyone that "/domg/ is impossible to please". The one thing that admins do is listen to players. Players asked you for a restart, and you decided to be a prick about it. You literally had one job and you fucked it up because of your ego and "lol, those players, why would I listen to them, lmao XD" attitude. Fuck off.

Actually, he set the turn timer to 2 hours by, did a few turns, either couldn't figure out how to roll back or didn't care to, then declared the game over. That was BigGayCity
>>
>>147284826
Unless there was another game where that happened, in which case nvm
>>
>>147284416
I took over T'ien Chi after he'd staled 5 turns in a row and had obviously quit. I did lose to Pangaea, he'd been able to get demon lords and such by that point and I couldn't turn the tide.

Again I'm sorry for rolling back, I learnt my lesson to never roll back and also to not trust players who tell me to do so.

>>147284639
Well it is tough shit if you have poor starts and/or submit pretenders wrongly. Fucking deal with it. I've restarted games up to 3 times to deal with shitty players complaining about starts or fucking up pretenders and all it does is cause even more rage when people lose good starting positions for shit ones because players fuck up. Hence why I'm saying you can't win with the complainers here.

>>
>>147285423
Yeah Shiny in that game I think was leaving turns to the last minute on a 48 turn timer. Literally last hour before host. Did it something like 12 times in a row. Never ever did a double turn. I asked nicely, eh what can you do?
>>
>>147285130
>Fucking deal with it.
I did. I AI'ed immediately.

"Bad start" is one thing, starting in each other's cap circle is entirely different. If you can't uderstand that simple fact, just don't admin games.
>>
Man, the only time I ever failed to start a game was All Tomorrows, but trying to start that while Memegeddon just started, and while Flatus was still running, and another biggish disciple game started, was a tad ambitious.

Honestly, the whole game concept was super ambitious. Trying to find 30 players that won't stale/ai/quit . . . good luck (I could maybe muster 20 in all, which given 6 teams that have/did sign up is about accurate).

All Tomorrows was only going to have 10 teams though, and in disciples # of teams is more important for determining game length than # of players.

In some RPGs, there's the concept called "Rusty knife shanktown", due to at early levels both players and enemies being crap and yet able to die to each other due to one fluke of luck.

With that in mind, I present to you a 10 man disciple game, two sides of 5 players. Set in EA, as UW in MA is PELAGIAVILLE and LA is non-existent, gold and rescources are on 50% to make scales matter slightly, research needs to be discussed.
The map it will be on is a modified version of Talis, which shall be uploaded once the nations are chosen, so one team starts against the right side, the other the left.

Three level three thrones will be placed, in 6, 13 and 14.

Playing LA R'lyeh in the same game as LA Atlantis is always a big risk.

Not restarting after an early AI was dumb though.
>>
>>147295797
>Playing LA R'lyeh in the same game as LA Atlantis is always a big risk.
Thank you for your words of wisdom, but no nation shoud ever share a cap circle with one another. Especially if one nation can kill the other in 2 turns. And that is a good reason to restart.
>>
>>147295920
Except all the land nations who end up sharing cap circles with UW players (or even having adjacent capitals, in some cases). None of us get a restart.

>>147296838
I'm not the admin, I just agree with him that restarting should not happen just because someone got a bad start.

I've called him out on his other stupid decisions, but in this case he's doing the right thing.
>>
>>147297507
Similar doesn't mean same. Before you have any way to fight back doesn't mean on turn 2. If two nations share a cap circle any sane person with at least rudimentary knowledge of MP will support a restart.
>>
So what maps are generally multiplayer acceptable? I want to start admining some summod/mostly vanilla games but I'm not sure what maps are kosher.
>>
>>147298307
I like pymous's maps, like Snerdryn. They're pretty, and while not perfectly balances are still pretty good.
>>
>>147298307
Well, generally everything without too much clustered terrain and starts in a 1-2 1-3 province is acceptable. Most balanced maps have fixed starts/many nostarts to prevent you from starting in a swamp connected to two wastes.

>>
>>147297913
I have not once seen people ask for a restart due to overlapping capcircles before now, and I've been in half a dozen games where I know it's happened.

Having an capcircle which intersects with a land nation is almost a given for UW nations, due to the way water provinces are set up.

Why are you moving goalposts again? Atlantis and Riley are both UW-ish nations, and if you don't know how that matchup goes don't speak to me and my son ever again.

If they didn't ask for restarts, it means they didn't care about actually winning. Because when someone shares a cap circle with Ermor they're fucked even if they rush the skellies.

I was at a level where I didn't need really need anything else research wise and threw all my mages to the front to speed up gobbling AI Shino, but apparently they could have been used elsewhere. So, I decided to go on holiday to France. I thought that I'd still be able to do my turns there, but apparently they have yet to invent decent mobile internet coverage. I have to cycle about 2 miles to the nearest 3g spot to pick up my turn files, cycle back to the chalet, then cycle back again to send the turn file off.

Attached is the route back to the village.

I'm going to cycle up here at 12 GMT each day to pick up and complete any turn file, but if the turn hasn't processed yet I will leave it until the next day. Admin, I would appreciate short extensions to facilitate this.

It works against all missiles, but fireball is an AoE spell even if it has a ball flying across the map. It will mess up Nether Darts, Magma Darts and Iron Blizzard just fine.
>>
>>147346587
If it messes up stuff like Nether Darts, wouldn't it also mess up Storm Demon ranged attacks?

Almost 100% certain magic projectiles are immune to air shield.

I'm 100% sure it works on nether darts and magma bolts.

I think that lightning strike attacks might be special, but that's based only on hearsay and the weird animation. I haven't tested them.

Provinces >>147298707
I expanded with Knights of Avalon, 6-8 were enough to take pretty much every indie province without losses. Prod3 as well as Caelum's and Agartha's slow expansion (both of which were probably not really their fault, considering Agartha was blocked by mountains and Caelum player was a newbie who subbed in after the original player staled turn 1) allowed me to get quite big. Around turn 12 Agartha was already encircled, at which point he attacked me (a sensible thing to do). I defeated his army, though I failed to take his cap (thank you, Illfraud, for fixing the bug with immobile pretenders not being able to patrol provinces in Dom3, great work). Around the time I got something to kill Agartha's Jew Pillar, I got attacked by Nazca. F9 Supayas are a pain to deal with, but I managed to spook dead birds with some deep raiding, using trapeze'ing Mothers of Avalon and Zotz from Agartha's cap, which gave me some time to research counters to flying ghosts with flaming spears and kill them.

Research >>147298869
Magic2. Monks are pretty amazing. I found a Steel Ovens province around turn 10, so my F1E1 Logrians with Dwarven Hammers and Copper Arms (5F+5E gems, forgebonus1 in summod) were forging 1 gem lanterns.

Dominion >>147299189
Started templespamming in the late midgame, when I had an okay blood economy already and was summoning vampires. My plan to win Enchanted Forests + dompush from temples and stealthy monks; it wasn't necessary though.

I had a Mother Oak pretty much the entire game and also did cast Gift of Health when I got to Conj9 and started summoning Tartarians. At the end of the game, I had a decent blood economy with 150-200 slaves/turn (thanks to Shinu allowing me to take Garnet Sorceress province). I had a ton of gems (with nature income being the lowest, ironically) which I used for gearing discounted Golems and Tarts as well as forging boosters/armor (2F for RoS immunity is really nice) for my most important mages.

My troops were mostly wolves from the Soulstone. Forts in the endgame were all Wizard's Towers/Three Red Seconds Citadels. Income was good because of scales and Mari conquering dead provinces while fighting Ermor.

Here it is. F4 makes Wardens able to reliably hit stuff (and they hit pretty hard), now that summod gave them the ability to actually fight battles instead of spending their lives travelling. Flaming Arrows is necessary for Longbowmen/Slingers nation. Astral access was pretty useful as well, Gateway/Astral Travel is great. If he weren't ironfisted to death, he could also forge Rings with a Crystal Coin.

>>147344724

Goddammit, you guys. I really wish I could be a competent late game adversary in this game but this was kind of fucking crippling.

If I can't get my issues resolved then I'll just focus on getting my turns in earlier using another computer. I shouldn't need any extensions but if the admin does happen to notice there's about 6 hours before I stale then I probably won't be making that turn in on time.

Or I could just concede to Agartha and he can win two games in one day.
But that's not going to happen.

Deadlands sites are so cash. I like the easier to utilize Angels. I think the improvements to sacreds merit more experiments with blesses, but you still have the same problem as vanilla, too many different sacreda that need different blesses. I think I'll try N9 first andGoH for freespawn flags.

I, uh... I'm sitting here without globals nor gem income to speak of, with Arcane Nexus R'lyeh on one side and full Blood Abysia on the other, getting wrecked by a 600 units strong army of Storm Demons, Fiends and Debils, with at least two Demon Lords leading it, while castles on my borders have garrisons of tens of Demon Knights and I'm slowly getting domkilled.

MA Man isn't particularly strong right now, I think (I won thanks to blood, death and lucky sitesearching, honestly). Knights of the Round Table, with all their amazing stats, are useless as units after early midgame (and you won't have them earlier). Mothers aren't so expensive for what you get now, but I'd really like to see A2 on them more often (they need a spell to spam in order to utilize the Soothing Song to its fullest potential). Logrians and E random Mothers lost their turn1 RoS (and/or Cloud Trapeze RoS), which is a significant nerf, since you can no longer murder stacks of mages with paths that are simply better at killing stuff. National buff spells are nice, but low range limits their usefulness; Wardens (cap-only) and Knights (reclimit 2 if you didn't max Prod, remove barding premium) are worth buffing, but Foresters... not so much.
Can't say anything about Slumber and other post-0.55 changes.

>>

Ok lads, lorewise - let's go over the elves. I get the Fomorians (giants from the sea, took over Nemedia, got cursed), but I'm not 100% on the other elves. What's the relationship between the Nemedians, the Tuatha, and the Sidhe? All I know is that they all make Firbolgs their bitches.
>>
>>147367854
>also, who won that nationgen with the OP lizards?
Still going, last I checked. OP Lizards died very early, one of the first.
>>
>>147351240
I've spoken before about my thoughts on summod Ermor but the gist of it: I really like what it does with the nation, but having no research sucks so hard.

I probably could've done better in another game, and there may have been some changes to the mod since we started playing, but as it stands now they really drop off hardcore around year 3. This was compounded by my own lack of skill at managing research, however, but it's certainly much harder than several other nations.
>>
>>147373454
First, there were Partholonians. They got wiped out, but their blood survived to become the Nemedians. They got wiped out, but their blood survived to become the Tuatha. They all went back into the Land of the Ever-Young and vanished from the world, but their blood survived as the sidhe. Essentially Partholonians were the super-elves of the pre-EA era, and then as that blood gets diluted they become less and less super until you only have traces of sidhe blood left in Fir Bolg and regular humans, who tend to become great heroes and warriors.

Meanwhile, the Fir Bolg were conquered by every single one of them, plus the Fomorians. Merrow are underwater Fir Bolg who get conquered by Morgana.

Oh, and Banshee are just undead Sidhe from the EA..

Their cap income was nerfed drastically, and they now instead get death sites spawning in provinces they control. This sets back their dusk elder / other researcher summoning drastically. They also have more expensive infrastructure
>>
>>147374616
5 death gem site in the capital instead of 15.
Provinces with at least 1 candle and 1000 or less population can spawn a site that gives 1D and increases death scales.
First 5 death sites are easier to get, something like 7000 population or less.
Castles are 1200 gold to construct.

http://kiirno.github.io/Sauromatia_Guide.html
In general, a bless strategy is shit.
Sauromatia only has H1s, and while their sacreds are good (being shitty white centaurs), they will get beaten by almost every other bless nation.
General sauro strat is a decent expansion, followed by a power spike in midgame using skellies and cascades, to a turtle in late-game until tarts and mass vamps are available.
Sauro experiences a large power-trough in late mid to early late-game as people get shit like RoS, EQ and firestorm which completely fuck communions.

My end game was summoning faerie queens, empowering one for Air queens, then bullying Yomi off of the throne I needed to win.

>>
>>147389143
W9 monobless (or even W9/x like this lad took) is actually fine, but you're basically just using it to get big. It's the equivalent of taking an awake expander as far as Sauro is concerned, with the difference being that you get big water instead of big-ish E like you do with a snake, and you have the addition of w9 cav with your actual armies later on. The play is still fundamentally the same, and you're not looking to do a sacred rush or anything like that

Sauro is the best nation in the game to dump misf3, due to plenty of forts, and fortune tellers.
Sloth 3 is not a problem later on since sauro will be swimming in resources with all her forts.
The problem of early game lack of resources is remedied with an awake expander.

I managed to take out almost everything reliably, including multiple barb provinces of that size (which you should avoid sending expanders against because they tend to be risky).

I only lost battles on a province with 13 heavy cav and an amazon province with mages, both of which you should be able to see and avoid.

What are you scripting? Did you accidentally leave her casting spells or something?

>>
>>147396982
If you're a water nation, you'll usually have better troops which can go on land.

If you're a land nation your chances of holding territory underwater are shit anyway, and you have better stuff on land.

They can make a decent coastal raiding party if you manage to get control of a patch of water with no UW nation in it, that's about it.

They're some of the most efficient indy infantry. They have 17 HP and 13 prot for only 10 gold and 7 res. They even have above average morale. They actually beat out some UW national troops.
>>
>>147399283
They aren't war shambler tier, but I've always thought they were a good buy. Never had enough to be effectual, though.
>>
How good are gemgen globald?
>>
>>147401220
War shamblers aren't good, unless you're referring to the mercs
>>
>>147403457
Mother oak is good if you can rush it early. Stellar Focus is good because it costs a small amount of gems to set up, but ench 7 is a lot of RP, and usually most slots are already filled when you research it. Eternal Pyre is the one that Abysia will always cast, so forget about it if it's in the game. Earth Blood Deep Well is 10 gems too expensive in my opinion, though I cast it several times as Agartha. Well of Misery is arguably the best one around (besides arcane nexus, but that's not a gemgen per se), as it increases both income and gem count, and doesn't annoy your opponents that much like the next one, Gale Gate. Gale Gate I literally never saw anyone cast. Maelstrom is the one that UW nations usually cast, so again, a pretty isolated case.

Overall, I think most "big" enchantments that give 10 gems should cost 10 gems less to cast to make them more enticing and worthy to fight for.
>>
>>147399096
Wave Warriors look like they'd kick their asses to me.

11 attack compared to 9 as well as 17 damage compared to 13. Ictyhids do have higher hp and lower goldcost, but I don't think that'll be sufficient to win.

I'll run a few test battles.

I'd also put the Apostates as the strongest troop MA Pelagia gets, not Wave Warriors.
>>
>>147404112
Yeah, their coastal units are way better on land than wave warriors. Like, by far. Hoplites have a pretty crazy high res cost, but that prot + long spears makes them great defensively.

I picked Wave Warriors as a comparison because when I played Pelagia, I had a ton of UW forts for mage production, and preferentially recruited ichtyid warriors over the wave warriors when I had the chance. Since Pelagia is a mage nation, I mostly used the infantry to hold the line for mages to work. For the purpose of soaking hits, Ichtyids are much better. I would definitely be interested in seeing the results of your tests, though.
>>
>>147404112
If you run 13 ichtyids against 10 wave warriors, I think the ichtyids should carry it (or multiples thereof - 26 v 20 etc)
>>
>>147404025
If you had the opportunity to have two gemgens up, would you do it? Or would that make you too scary?
>>
>>147405908
I T D E P E N D S

That said, I would very rarely avoid doing things just because they make you 'scary.' Anything that helps you win makes you 'scary.'
>>
>>147405908
If you put up two globals you're already pretty scary. If they're not Eyes of God and Mother Oak or something. But yeah, sure, I'd do that. The thing is, in most of my games I had no opportunity to cast dual gemgens. I mostly put up a gemgen and some other global, or a gemgen and a shitton of summons/crafting. Let me see, obviously WoM and cancerous globals as MA Ermor, Gale Gate and Perpetual Storm as van, Earth Blood and a shitton of summons as Agartha, Pure and nothing as Abysia, GoH and Mother Oak as Pan. Putting up two gemgens require high paths, so it's pretty hard to do.
>>
>>147404112
>>147405903
I think it's close enough that first hit might have a huge impact on who wins.
>>
Did 5 tests with a variety of scripting. Wave Warriors won every fight except the one where I screwed up scripting and let the Icthyids flank them.

Average results (excluding the messed up test) are around 65 wave warriors dead to around 150 icthyids dead.

>>147405773
>I mostly used the infantry to hold the line for mages to work. For the purpose of soaking hits, Ichtyids are much better.
Assuming the price is similar on both, I think it's more important to take the useful infantry, even if they're not quite as good at soaking hits.

I don't think I've seen many fights come down to who can take more evocations before dying, but I've seen plenty come down to whose troops can beat up the other guy's once the mages are tired.

>>147405903
I ran 154 Wave Warriors against 200 Icthyids, which is roughly equal gold cost.

>>147406261
I think wave warriors generally got first strike, but since they have nearly double the speed of Icthyids they're far more likely to get it in a real battle too.

>>
>>147407927
Icthyids are by no means bad, mind. They're excellent chaff/head-on frontliners for their cost.
>>
>>147408024
Yeah, I still love their Hp/cost. I just thought that wave warriors were hot garbage, and your tests show that they can actually fight other infantry.
>>
>>147407687
I was using groups of 40, lead by indie commanders.

My general aim is to have both sides flanking as little as possible, since in large battles it doesn't tend to happen unless part of the enemy army dies/routs.

I don't think a single line fits what happens in an actual battle very well.

>>147407927
Remember that the wave warriors killed some of the icthyids when they retreated. I'd say up to 30 died after their lines started breaking up.

With that in mind they're a bit less impressive, though they still handily win.

Whats the best bless for EA Abyssia ?
I usually go N9 but im not sure if i should go minor air (5) blessing with a bit better scales or minor earth (4)
>>
>>147436407
You're usually better off taking a pretender for contracts than a bless. I've only seen burning ones do work in summod, where they're horrifying with N9. You'd want an earth minor to deal with the enc, wouldn't you?
>>
>>147436694
I take the minor becasue of the mages i dont care about burnings they are just big meat shields with a fire shield
When i take criophynx i have 2 more scale points but i cant really value how good the minor air blessing is for fire spells
But on the other hand the air 5 is pretty much useless for cross paths earth is way better with erath 5 you can easiyl boost to earth 6 for riches and earth blood deep well
>>
>>147436407
N9 is probably better, but E9 can sure do a similar job too and is more geared towards your mages.
>>
>>147437028
Reinvig is probably better for your mages than the minor air bless for your mages though. It means more spells. Precision up is nice but typically you'll be deploying your mages against large armies, where precision isn't as important. Even if your mages miss slightly more often, if the enemy army is large enough you'll probably still hit something.

What's a good pretender for MA Ulm? Are staves of elemental mastery worth it? Or how about going N9 for shrouded Golems? Full scales is a given though, right?

Rainbows are pretty common, from what I've seen. MA Ulm lacks diversity.

Why A3 instead of A4 for the boosters/air queens? Why N3 when you can go N2 and still get all the boosters (with astral), or N4 when you can boost up to Treelords Staff. Why D3 when D2 will get you Skull Staves and you can summon your way up? Why the fuck no blood for blood stones? Why not S5 to get up to potential rings? Why only 2 temp scales, and why not heat instead of cold?

If you're going to make a rainbow, why not try to make it so it can at least try to craft most boosters/give multiple end game paths.

It's really not that hard to be an admin.

All you need to do is decide on original settings for a game, shill it for a few days until full here (just do a post when you wake up or something), then watch the thread for people asking for shit once the game has started.

If you regularly browse /domg/, you're already doing the majority of the 'work' needed.
>>
>>147448539
First of all, nobody told you not to join that game. Someone just pointed out taht the admin is a shitter. Stop getting rectal ragnarocked over something you imagined someone implied.

Second, you shouldn't whine about shit you can fix yourself. Learn how to set up a game and make your own games.

Third, getting mad because people don't make games at your command is pretty pathetic.
>>
>>147449151
>firstly, secondly, thirdly
>calls me upset

I don't know how to break this to you friend. And no I didn't ask "games to be made on my command" I asked what are the alternatives to the so-called badmin games since it was the only one posted in the thread. No need to strawman that hard.
>>
>>147436694
Burning ones are nearly as horrifying outside of summod. The only difference is that plate hauberks are slightly better.
>>
>>147436407
Depends on the size of the game. In a small game (4-6 players) I'm fond of either W9E9 or N9E9, and just roll people with Burning Ones.

In larger games Burning Ones can't compete later on, since you can't get enough of them, and I prefer a diversity pretender for vampire lords/contracts.
>>
>>147426472
You don't need a big bless to make the sacreds good. The incidental E bless from a scales snek is enough to let one or two take on land provinces. If you want to rush someone with your sacreds, well, then you'll want something like W9/Ex or N9/Ex, but even that's not particularly expensive. A W9 monobless is DIRT cheap, but your sacreds will get exhausted when fighting 50-1 or whatever crazy odds you throw them into it

Arco probably isnt best suited for that, but getting O3/neutral production scales would be a good start. A4 is nice because of hats and what not and is an okay mage bless, but is totally extravagant here, do A1-2. Dom8 is nice, but dom6 is much cheaper and more scales. Drop Misf 1-2 if need be, but O3G3 will ensure that at least you're not totally fucked if you can't rush someone. You can try gambling on O3G2 and pray for a growth throne early on, but it probably isn't worth it.

Whats the point of rushing someone on turn 13 if they have actual scales and can afford to push you back/kill your god.
>>
>>147481320
Dom 8 is to recruit 8 Wind Riders, and A4 is to throw storm up. Storm lets you use your riders as a line, and tstrike/lightning.
>What's the point of rushing someone on turn x if they have actual scales and can afford to push you back/kill your god?
Isn't that the risk of any war? Or are the scales really that sub-optimal that you consider them crippling?
>>
>>147482016
IIRC, fliers in line formation won't fly anyway so no need for that.
>>
>>147482016

Considering your Wind Riders are 65 gold and 15 resources, and you're dumping order/production scales,it is far far far more likely you'll be limited by gold/resources than holy points.

Storm is also Evo 5, are you sure you can hit that as early as possible with magic scales? Preliminary testing with 12 rp Philo/mystics with sloth 1 magic 0 looks like that might be hard.

Also fliers march forward in a line formation. Literally just ran a test game to triple check with wind riders. No storm needed. T-strike works a shitton better if it's massed, with hordes of 1 turn non cap A2, not if it's only your pretender casting it.

I love non-hinnom innovative strategies, I do. But this one doesn't seem like its gonna pan out.

>>147483370
Actually, Dom 8 is because of personal experiences with Dom being the cap for recruiting rather than gold or resources. I'll test the research, but it's kind of a moot point because I would need conj for storm power. This is from an Sloth 1 game btw.
>>
Okay, so while the 300% resources, gold, and 75% magic frequency is cute and all, and 3 starting provinces is w/e, and the indy strength 9 is so last memegame.

Score graphs need to be off.
>>
>>147483370
>>147482016

Maybe try out a Titan of the Sea? W9E4 dom5 O3Cold3G3 at dormant gives you something with water breathing, pretty okay scales, and a decent bless since the wind riders do have 8 enc. It ain't sailing, but you can probably grab some free indy provinces UW, and attack someone from there. If you want you can dump a point of misf for prod/magic, or sloth for magic and turbo charge those fucking philosophers.

While I agree that an early war is a risky gambit to banking on more provinces > better scales, it doesn't work well with scales that directly shit on your high gold sacreds, nor if that early war depends on mid gamey research goals and a dormant pretender to lead around some pretty hard to mass sacreds.

Alternatively, consider turmoil 3/luck 3 if you're really really really hung up on your titan of sailing/whatever pretender. There's at least a chance you'll get some amazing gold events then.

>>147485182
300% 300% 300%?

You want bats? that's how you get bats.
>>
>>147484203

wait, what exactly are you trying to do. because it seems like you're trying to half ass arco into a t strike nation with a cap only A1-A2 mage engineer or a cap only A2-A3 oreiad. keeping in mind that the mage engineer has human hp, map move 1, and a 1/5 chance at A2. I guess this can be doable, but really you're gonna be only recruiting mage engineers I guess.

On top of that, you're trying to use your pretender to start raiding coastal provinces with sailing and w9 super fatiguing/expensive wind riders. On turn 13ish. Praying that your pretender doesn't get fucked and killed, hence unable to craft air items/able to cast storm as easy.

Why cant you take a cheaper w9 bless imprisoned, and prophetize a wind rider to bless them? It can't cross oceans (typically) but flying is probably better for you at raiding.

Why half ass two things when you can whole ass one? Especially if you can get better scales. There are literally no nations that don't benefit from more gold.

Vamp counts
>>
>>147491837
If you go Dormant and bloodhunt with your second tiers, wouldn't you still get Vamp Counts almost just as fast and have 2-3 more scales? I mean, you're not going to bloodhunt that early since you're probably still expanding anyway so you won't have enough patrollers.
Also, I thought LA Ulm's primary expander were the Rangers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HeDyJYoHXt0

That mage's job was to cast flaming arrows via communion. He just made the elemental afterwards because he decided fireballs are boring after a while.
>>
>>147507618
This. I personally make 'lanes' for the elementals if I want them in the middle, but in the pic they look like they're getting caught behind the crossbows. That is a VERY bad place for a heat-aura unit to sit.

>>147507713
Oh. Well, in that case use 'conservative gem usage.' When mages go off script and have gems, they like elementals.
>>
>>147507713

>>
>>147507752
>>147507771
>When mages go off script and have gems, they like elementals
Good to know. For some reason I like to overload my important mages with gems.
>>
>>147507828
Bringing extra gems is fine. Conservative ensures that they mostly won't use them how you don't want them to. When your enemies start having magic phase movement, you ALWAYS want to bring enough gems for 3 fights, with more on scouts to resupply from.

Also, summoning elementals is quite good in assassination battles, so having a few gems on hand is nice for making fire mages more resilient against assassins
>>
>>147507828
Gem overload is okay (I mean, for like 3-4 battles tops - a scout sneaking with your army should have the rest to avoid losing them all if a mage dies). AI likes to spend them though, and it's not very good at choosing what to do with them.
>>
>>147507828
> For some reason I like to overload my important mages with gems.

put gems on scouts and make them follow them army on stealth. that way if they die in battle you only lose few gems.

remember that each gem is worth 20-60 gold: losing 4 of them is as painful long term as losing the mage.

I'm getting in to this game and while it was pretty easy to get in to I don't really understand how to step up my game once I can afford to spam the good units.

I'm guessing the trick is to use magic in a more tricky way? Summon monsters to be my troops instead of just recruiting knights and equivalents?
I normally just use the sorceress and load her up with a million magic levels of everything so she can search and find stuff and stand at the back casting spells, when I used the giant monster gods in close combat they would just die or get loads of wounds and I'd be fucked over.
>>
>>147508071
You should have your recruitable/summonable mages casting stuff during battles. Your god is too cool for that 99% of the time.

The trick is to use magic which fucks up your enemies' troops and helps yours. Trite, but that's how it works. Tell us what nation are you playing as and we'll tell you what fun things you can cast.
>>
>>147508071
-multiplayer is the only place where you can learn what is really viable or not as against the AI you won't see your ideas challenged.

-as the game progress it shifts toward lot of mages, heavy magic and summoned troops. recruitable troops often need buff spells to keep being relevant. humans and small hp troops struggle a lot because they are easily wiped out by evocations, but low magic resistance ones have it hard too.
when looking for good recruitable troops try to see how much gold each square is worth it and how many attacks does it have. Eventually your enemy will hae troops with high protection... a human with 12 blunt damage can't really compete even if you buff his strenght.

>when I used the giant monster gods in close combat they would just die

fatigue and protection are the main problem. you solve it with "summon earth power" (conjuration 3) and magical items that gives reinvigoration, armor and buffs.only few gods can expand in the first 2 turns. fighting gods are rarely useful against players because there is almost always a spell that is able to damage or fatigue them(mostly MR negate spells or elemental spells), but if the enemy doesn't have the right spell avaible then they are viable.
you more likely want them to cast spells.
>>
>>147508293
I mostly just cycle through the early game factions, I think the mermen are pretty cool though.

>>
>>147511280
>>147511194
does xibalba get 300% blood slaves?

honestly i don't see how xibalba would be stronger than other nations with 300% settings. if anything they get weaker because their expansion phase is strongly crippled by the avaibility of commanders and limited number of sacreds.

shit like Abysia being able to recruit 7 sacreds even without prod 3 is going to be more interesting.
the fixed limit of mage recruitment and the fixed delay of building the fort to recruit them means that by turn 15, when the first war should start, you will have an higher ration of troops/mage than in a normal game, which mean nations with good troops can have a big swing(xibalba troops are actually terrible for anything other thna raiding).
>>
>>147511581
>crippled by the avaibility of commanders and limited number of sacreds.
Ahahaha.

Xibalba expands by building a billion lance bats in every forest province that they take. 300% more gold and res means 300% more bats.

That said, you're right that their troops will lose to regular infantry and whoever their fighting should have more of it.
>>
mictlan, please bring quadbless
>>
>>147511581
I haven't played Xibalba but based on my experience with Caelum (Spire Horn warriors with lances, I'd imagine, expand similarly to lance bats: +3 str vs size 2 makes them equal-ish in terms of turn 1 lance strike potential), high settings could very well be extra beneficial for them. After all, if everyone can recruit a sustainable expansion party a turn, how fast each player can expand is primarily limited by mobility, and MM3+flying is great mobility. Hell, since Xibalba has foreign recruit lance bats, this is even more pronounced if a forest provinces can also create an expansion party a turn.

>>147512082
>It's -less- tied to site frequency than gem income
I dunno about this, not sure how much gem income is affected by changing site frequency.

What I do know is that going from 45 site frequency to 75 increases blood hunt returns by up to 50% (you see less effect at higher blood hunting levels).

Not sure if that's enough to keep up with 300% income levels.

>>147512547
Tomb Wyrms can be pretty useful with a B9/N9/B9N9 bless, or so I hear.
>>
>>147511739
>Xibalba expands by building a billion lance bats in every forest province that they take. 300% more gold and res means 300% more bats.

but it's still fucking limited by the # of commanders.

i've played xibalba EA and i had more troops than my commanders could handle early on.
you are not efficiently using your 3x power until 6-7 turns have passed and ou menaged to get some forests. After that your mobility allows you catch back, but i expect every other nation to have already built 3 gigantic resource heavy loss-neutral expansion parties at that point.

i just noticed that indipendents strenght is 9. this goes strongly against xibalba because you go from being able to oneshot the enemy army and force a route without losing any bat, to actually taking 2-3 turns to consume the enemy squares, taking much more than triple the losses. first turn victory is how flying lancers perform.

>>
>>147512927
and my point is that those forests come too late to counterbalance the bad factors.
it's one turn to conquer the forest, one turn to recruit the commander...well you actually need 2 commanders because it has shit for leadership and you are at indipendence strenght 9. then you move out 80 bats from that forest which is the bare minumum you need to conquer one crappy province without losing half of them.
during all of that we weren't able to use those 2 commanders to lead the 100 bats we recruited in our capital. we might not even be able to spend all our gold due to recruit limit of 100.

meanwhile many other nations are dumping all their gold into troops in their capital and making the same old boring basic commander lead them

I can't tell if you're actually retarded, or you're playing Xibalba and are trying to make it look like you didn't deliberately pick the most OP nation in the age.
>>
>>147513603
All other nations are recruiting one expansion party per turn, and as a result they'll lose roughly half of their turns backtracking and moving across already conquered provinces.

Meanwhile Xibalba starts off recruiting one per turn and an extra one per forest, and with MM3+Flying they will barely lose any time backtracking and can hop straight across to the next forest, chokepoint or high-value province.

Even though their expansion parties aren't nearly as strong as many others, they will never get blocked by strong poptypes and can simply take on the shitty indies first, expanding the outer radius of their empire faster than any nation in the game even when their overall # of provinces will initially be lower that others, at least until they get a few forests pumping out more bats.

Xibalba isn't just strong because they've got good blood. In the hands of a halfway competent player their expansion is among the top of the game simply because of foreignrec troops and god-tier mobility.
>>
>>147516528
but that takes time to happen...

how many provinces/player does that map have? expansion might be too quick for xibalba too acquire enough commanders to show his good expansion.
i don't think most nations will need much backtracking with a good expansion party.
>>
>>147518042
Wasn't an issue for memegeddon bats, definetly won't be an issue here. Only people close to bats anyway are Oceania, Atlantis, Mictlan, and Machaka.
>>
>>147518042
Even if the map has no dead ends and you never get cut off by other players (which is very unlikely), you still run into problems without flying. If you have a capring of 4 provinces, that means you start losing turns after 4 expansion parties, while bats can simply fly over. If run into something shitty like a heavy cap province or a throne, bats can simply fly over. If there's a chokepoint nearby, bats can reach it before the opponent does. If there are multiple forests nearby, bats can hope from forest to forest, growing exponentially. If you do have reason to backtrack, many nations will have to backtrack at one province per turn on many terrain types, while bats can simply attack elsewhere. And so fucking forth.

What determines your expansion speed is how strong your expansion troops are (which is Xibalba's weakness, and a great strength for nations like Pan), how many of them you can get per turn (which is where Xibalba wins as soon as they get a forest, which is usually turn 4-ish), and how efficiently you can use them (which is where Xibalba wins again, both because of MM3+Flying and because new parties don't all have to start at their cap.

Most nations have an advantage in one of these aspects. Like having amazing sacreds, but they don't fly and are cap-only (like Pan), having flying units, but they're weak and can only be recruited at your cap until you get a second fort up (like Caelum), or having foreignrec units but they're both shitty and not flying (like Kailasa). Xibalba has two out of three, which gives them a significant advantage.

Granted, indie strength 9 means their weakness (low individual unit strength) is more pronounced, but thanks to Flying they can simply ignore and move past the stronger indies without losing turns.

How do you best utilize elemental royalty? Obviously IT DEPENDS, but what items do they need to SC? What are key support spells can they cast as battle support? Also are any of a particular element significantly better than the others of that element?
>>
>>147532909
I wouldn't use them as SCs. Use non-uniques for that. Elemental royalty make great ritual casters and support mages.

Army of Lead/Gold/Fog, Warriors of Muspelheim/Niefelheim, the elemental Fend spells, stuff like Firestorm, Demon Cleansing, Grip of Winter, Ground Army, Wrathful Skies, etc.
>>
>>147532909
Most of them aren't really SC material, they're better off casting important spells like fog warriors, army of lead, firestorm/fire resistance, that sort of thing. They can do thugging and they're unlikely to die but there are better ways to use them.
>>
>>147532909
earth ones can cast army of gold/lead for massive battle field enchantment. as well as spam maws of earth.
i think that with booster it should be able to cast earthquake twice, but if you are going for EQ you are likely to need 3 so alone it's not enough.

water ones feel a bit useless unless you want to cast vengeful water or try to beat an UW nation/fight UW.but aside for water bottles there aren't many options for W gems. note that with the right item they can walk on land.

Air ones look super strong because they can cloud trapeze or fly in the way of small armies/ SC. having good mobility ensure that they can go back to your army to cast storm or fog warriors.
shock is one of the best element to counter thugs and air elemental are the most dangerous ones because they fly right into your mouth even during storm and deliver trample or AN shock damage which is defintiely harder for thugs and gods to prepare.i think that they attempting to trample a thug instead of shocking him might be a problem.
Living cloud summons many of them and is excellent both against thugs and in a full army.

fire feels strong but quite restricted. they can try to firestorm certain armies but otherwise they just drop evocations- which is ok.you can also drop warrior of muspheleim.

they are definitely overkill if all you want is kill PD, but sending them as big caster in your army while also having the gear for making them counter some Thug or take an empty province while still being able to survive some mages sounds good.
you gear them like a thug + extra MR, make sure they recover fatigue from spell casts, eventually drop in an extra elemental protection based on enemy mages.
>>
>>147532909
Limne is a solid SC due to insane regen. The other water queens are the same, but can only UW.

The air queens can hunt/kill other SCs, if those don't have LR. They're not sturdy enough to take armies.

The Earth Kings are. The Fire Kings can do it too, if the armies aren't fielding lots of magic weapons.

It's hard to find good uses for air gems outside of combat. Air is a great combat path, but it doesn't have many good rituals.

What does this mean?
>>
>>147540983
>>147540835
>>147540690

This probably needs some playtesting and tweaking. However, it's in pretty good shape right now.

The next set of versions will go back through old changes based on the ~150 new submissions I've had since I started this project. I'll also maybe look at making artifacts and the arena better, and reweighing lemuria and ermor site production (mostly lemuria's).

>>147541272
Magisters can always produce a little research, even if they don't have magic paths. 90% of them will, so I might actually remove this change - it was introduced before I fiddled with their paths.
>>
>>147541425
Oh, I'll also spend some time reorganizing and commenting the code, which is starting to look a little messy, and fixing the changelog, which is falling behind in places.

Is there a mod that makes this game's AI less passive.
I've literally set all the AI nations to "aggressive". But they only ever invade each other, and not me.
>>
>>147553351
i don't think so, but there is a mod called AInorecruit that makes them less likely to recruit some shitty indie units.

if you want AI to attack you can try to attack them first, they are usually pretty responsive and they will war you even if you attack them with just a scout

You can take them on land with a Robe of the Sea (which is nice, because you want to boost them with it anyways) but they lack Limne's hilarious regen outside of the water. They, like the other royalty, are great army support mages. If you do have Evo 9, having a W7 mage casting Niefel Flames is just devastating. It's as close to you get to an army clear spell from W (10 AN damage in AoE 27 at 37 range).

That's it. I'm sick of all this "MA Ermor OP" bullshit that's going on in the /domg/ right now. Ermor deserves much better than that. Much, much better than that.
I should know what I'm talking about. I myself won 24 games as Ermor (that's around 86% win rate) and have been practicing with it for almost 2 years now. I can even rush people with rainbow pretenders now.
/domg/ (and sum1won in particular) spent years shitting on MA Ermor balance to produce the weakest MA nation known to Dominions 4 fans.
Skeleton is thrice as strong as flesh and thrice as hard for that matter too. Anything a living man can do, a skeleton can do even better. I'm pretty sure a skeleton could easily bisect a knight wearing full plate with a simple vertical slash.
Ever wonder why medieval people buried their dead deep in the ground? That's right, they were too scared to fight fearsome skeletons and their shadowy masters. Even in World War II, American soldiers targeted skeletons first because their killing power was feared and respected.
So what am I saying? Skeletons are simply the best type of unit that the world has ever seen, and thus, require better stats in the Dominions 4. Here is the stat block I propose for skeletons:
Hit points 48
Protection 16
Magic resistance 18
Strength 24
Attack skill 18
Defence sill 22
Precision 14
3 attacks (sword, skull, bones)
Fear 6
Invulnerability 15
Now that seems a lot more representative of the power of skeletons in real life, don't you think?
tl;dr = Skeletons need to do more damage in Dominions 4, see my new stat block.

>>
>>147558747
Yeah, so the reason that I was a bit flustered by the old totems and dedicated to their being nerfed was that my skype group basically discovered how OP they were and battles became these stupid stalemates where a few thugs holding them stood behind a line of basically anything and if you didn't have sufficient evo to 1 shot them, nothing died.

First Gen.

so here's how this will work, I (and any other bored anons) will pump out a bunch of gens. If anyone comes across an interesting nation they'd like to try mention the NATION seed in thread (not the mod seed). Once we have 30 approved nations we'll go through a strawpoll banning phase, then a final mod with the approved nations will be used to host a game

>>
>>147461317

I can do this. We'll be using a slightly modified Fate system. The premise -

A sinister organization is culling members playing the online turn based strategy game Dominions 4: Thrones of Ascension. The party consists of members of a terrible Mongolian calligraphy forum that have uncovered this terrible conspiracy, and they must race around the world confronting the illuminati while still finding ways to get their turns in on time.
>>
>>147571568
maybe a game of Dominions with a illuminati (mafia) style metagame?
>>
So, what about that shadowrun game? You know that Shadowrun is basically Dominions 50000 years in the future, right?
>>
>>147574670
Or maybe a straight up game of Mafia with dominions players / illuminati as the theme
>>
Or we could do all of them!
>>
Whelp, LA Xibalba now has an even higher winrate than Ragha - or MA Ermor.

EA Xibalba seems to have cemented themselves as well and away better than Lanka, which was the only nation contesting them.

Bats are pretty good troops. They make for amazing raiders, and they expand perfectly fine.

If Xibalba actually had crappy troops that'd be a major blow to them. Strong expansion and great raiding are both very important to Xibalba.
>>
>>147581707
Well, I say crappy, but being size 2 flying and foreign recruit in some cases more than makes up for it. They're only shit if you mash them against actual troops.
>>
Can someone explain when things happen in combat with units? Like, do archers always shoot before your guys move, or is there some way to make your archers shoot either before or after melee guys movement?
>>
>>147582392
1. Mages cast spells.
2. Missile units fire missiles.
3. Units move.
4. Melee combat occurs.
>>
Theoretically speaking, given Der Gotterdammerung is 300%, could a A4F9 bless on astral monkeys work? 100 or so Yavanas with an early (shit) windguide/fire arrows could be potent right?
>>
>>147581871
>They're only shit if you mash them against actual troops.
Yeah, but it's like complaining elves are shit at tanking evos.

They have great strengths elsewhere, so I'd still call them good troops.

Actual crappy troops are ones which are shit for every possible use you can give them, e.g. Sauromatia's amazons.

>>147582392
>>147582564
Sometimes I see archers fire two different volleys. It usually seems to happen when they have to move to get in range or when lots of your troops are near the enemy they want to shoot at.

I don't know of any way to reliably cause it, though.

>>147582681
I'm pretty sure 100 melee Yavanas with literally any X9Y4 bless would be better.
>>
>>147582882
A9S4 on the monkeys, lets go.

But in all seriousness, either N9 or W9 are the best options for a 9, and E is probably the best option for a 4.
