14 year old fortress, 125 year old default map parameters, 192x192 tiles embark size, 484 dwarves, year 14, 3x3 u/d stairway from top through 3 open caves to bottom, circus wide open and visiting, cavern 1 draining through multiple waterfalls over statues and a 100 block drop into cavern 2, 40+ maximum size stockpiles, inhabited layers almost completely dug out with minimal doors or hallways outside of bedrooms, no atomsmasher, waypoints, no optimizations, no idle dwarves. 6 fps!

Oh! Is this a new feature? I never had this in 42.06.

Its """"""""""""""new""""""""""" in the sense its a part of the new combat system (pulping, observation of forecasted enemy actions, rapid/wild/power/accurate attacks, etc. etc), it was definitely in 42.06.

Is there a Noldor elf mod that makes them wear adamantine/super strong and fast?
Also how is the 64bit version, is it any better?
>>
>>147215810
64 bit version handles larger ram allocations and whatnot, seemed a bit faster during later years of world-gen, seems faster during high population area visits with adventurers.
>>
is there a thread/page dedicated to hardware that gets the most out of DF?
eg. Should I put DF on my SSD?
>>
>>147222520
Page swaps aren't going to be the biggest hit, it's cache misses from the CPU to RAM that hurts DF, then page swaps from RAM to disk.

Originally elves in Masterwork had mithril as their thing, which is like adamantine lite (steel strength but more lightweight), now he's trying to make it more like a vanilla+ thing; that is, having races be like in the core game but moreso, a la civilizations of FB, titans, night creatures, necros, etc.
>>
>>147232708
I wish night creatures/random generated monsters could replace normal creature populations.
>>
>>147232926
Normal creatures as in civilized or normal creatures as in random ass fauna?
>>
>>147232947
I'd be happy with either.
>>
>>147206034
'I'nteract with the weapon.
Or just move, since that's less keystrokes.
>>
>>147234394
Didn't it used to be the case that you could twist weapons to inflict pain? Is that gone now?

>>147233382
Well ok, yeah in Masterwork you can enable/disable whichever races you like, and you can have no goblins, humans, or elves, and just night creatures, necromancers, forgotten beasts, and titans if you like, or what not.
>>
>>147212469
Alright /dfg/, time to step up your game. Make a new fort, it can only export animals and tamed vermin. Animals and tamed vermin, not their products. Not 3689986 dorfbuck roasts of their meat. Not their 25892598 bux egg roasts. Just the animal or vermin.

Theme is you're a band of animal poachers off to get rich selling pets and exotic pets to dwarves in the homeland.
>>
>>147213337
>Embark
>Look around
>Yup, I like fort there
>Dig out essentials and make a couple stone doors
>Put up like 2 stone doors
>Lock the door when shit comes, just ignore them until they leave
>Stockpile and dump everything underground

>>
>>147213337

When I get to a new map I build a quick little wooden hut around the starting wagon, then dig a ditch around the map.
>>
>>147234537

>>
>>147234537
Is there a way of limiting what's Active in Masterwork?
I tried it once before but didn't really enjoy the billion things it added and I'm too lazy/stupid/busy to mod.
>>
>>147236194
Yes. The new version is much more moderate, and there's a loader that lets you do just that.
>>

I don't think I have the burrow configurations for madness of this caliber. Try uh, try settling in that valley without a pop cap to reestablish the dorf civ then you can embark elsewhere and get solid migrants to leapfrog around.

Yes, for that is all humans really are.
>>
>>147238262
One thing that intrigues me is the way that if you abandon a fort, and embark somewhere else with the same civ, you will often see your old derfs as the first migrants.

I'm not a fan of migrants at all but if you have a ded civ you can use this to tailor pick what your two migrant waves will consist of.
>>
>>147238262
I found a nice cliff face. Frequent klobad blood rain but only wildlife so far is a mountain goat (living)

Getting people inside and building a small wall around the entrance to try and keep the needed migrants alive for slavery

>>
Give me strength /dfg/, this Forgotten Beast is being a really sneaky cunt.

Stays in the water just waiting for an opportunity to fuck my shit up. Any Dorf that waltz by gets snib snabbed before shitting back to the water, so I have basically had to mass forbid half the map just to keep Urist McCunt from getting himself killed.
Playing an extinct civ, the last refuge of the Dorfs, I really don't want to lose any Dorfs if I can help it.

1/3
>>
>>147239247
I could just wall the fucking lidless fox in, but that is a cowards strategy and he has made a fool out me to the point it is personnel. I can no longer stand to see that thing alive in my unit list.

I've set up a catapult hoping to conker this cock but the dipshit engineer balks whenever it comes that close. Also way too unreliable.

And finally the real reason I can't fucking kill this thing.

2/3
>>
>>147238567
Yeah, it used to bother me too but it's too much work to do a "king's expedition to build a forward base in evil lands". Plus with new combat, half of your superdorfs are gonna get killed regardless.

>>147239247
Just wall it off? Your well will be pulling water with a screw pump through a grate with no path to it from a fortification with a raising bridge shutoff filled cistern.

Do you have an aquifer? Is it a flier with breathes fire? run around the edges of the cavern carving fortifications with 1 tile walkways. Patrol marksdorfs and they'll eventually kill it. Then just pump stack magma into the cavern to boil shit up until you have control of the cavern. Wall up the edges, set traps and a barracks in the border gatehouse and station a squad. Add a lot of wood doors and a bait animal or 3 so you know when your guys get rolled.
>>
>>147239360
Webs. Fucking Webs.
All the Adamantine Armor in the world can't help you if you can't move, and the shit head can break your neck using just the impact force.

Marks dorfs can't hit reliably because it fucks off to water. Melee Dorfs get killed en-masse because it fucking sprays and prays before making the kill. Siege weapons can't hit the bitch and can't trap the cunt because that would require sacrificing someone when I can't afford any more losses.

Although personally I would just leave it and build an alternate route around it.
>>
>>147240117
I could do that, but then I would lose the only source of water in the entire map. A barren husk of a wasteland with every city burnt and ruled by Goblins and their Demon overlords.
>>
>>147240147
Yeah, this is another good one. Mine out the roof, channel your plug and assblast it.

Bit late for fortifications m8. See how the cunt has cozied up to the side of the caverns there? If I forticate that wall, the whole hall will flood. Whilst sticking a sword in his gut will be a hell of a lot more possible if he is unable to web and swim at the same time, I aint' gunna let him bloody me anymore.

Here is the dropbear package.
>>
>>147240851
If your caverns seriously 1-z high? you got a range of 20 tiles -1 for every z drop.

This must be what the Coyote felt like in a Road Runner cartoon.

The little shit didn't even feel it. Dropped four blocks on him, he didn't budge. Dropped four levels worth of rock on his stupid ass and didn't do shit.

All I learned is he actually really can swim and shot web at the same time. It was a noice shot lads, but we are back to the drawing board.

So the shit parked himself right to the shore did he? Well he can web like a cunt and swim like a duck but he is still bound by Toad Physics.

Some hapless dwarf I make dig the wall in front of him will make him get dragged down a nice corridor I made special, I'll make sure to welcome him with style with the very best spears and axes engineered to swing at the right moment.

>>
>>147243495
Being a vampire makes becoming a Necromancer infinitely more achievable.
>>
>>147243495
Vampire. If you're cool with savescumming, just topple some shrine statues until you get cursed with vampirism(if you don't see living entities through walls immediately you're a werebeast)

Necromancers will be cool with you if you're undead and basically give you their books, if you try to approach them as a human their minions will attack you.
>>
>>147243495
You can only become a vampire or werebeast if you are not a necromancer. So always vampire first.

Legend everything and even then you should be outrunning and shooting when they're far enough away, throwing when they aren't. You'll get crippled and gangraped or instakilled by a horn gore or hoof kick eventually. I love how gobbos, despite their kill neutrals ethic, never attack the non-mercenary visitors in your tavern.

In the first 0.42 releases, where sparring was fucked and sieges actually challenging again, I had my fort viped out at two occations, and both of the times, the gobbos would go into the tavern, cut down all of my dorfs in there as well as any merc who fought back, and just leave the visiting performers alone.

I bet visiting performers are the war photographers of the DF world, and enjoy some kind of diplomatic immunity against invading armies.

So strength, as well as eating a lot and doing little (extremely easy for fort denizens, seemingly impossible for adventurers despite eating 100x as much food or more), can increase size via thickening muscle and fat tissues respectively.

Anyone know by how much? What's the most grossly distended cancerous mass of hypertrophic musculature you've seen in dwarfdom, and what was its size?

No, but certainly the two week pause when starting or stopping a game will take longer.

What determines adventuring mode's FPS is largely pathing issues, cavern size, number of materials/complexity/etc (the alpalca bone thing), how many fuckers are around (there's always going to be a fairly decent amount of creatures wherever you go, as everywhere on the planet there are creatures in the cavern and absolute hordes of demons beneath your feet).

That doesn't apply to your home civ. They can reach you almost anywhere you embark. Your embark would have to be completely sealed at the map edges or have edges composed entirely of water/magma to keep the diplomat and caravans from coming.

I'm pretty sure they don't go insane either (maybe stress & needs are reset?)

You could use his blood to contaminate your main water source, have all your dwarves turn into werebeatss.
Keep in mind that werebeasts are building destroyers, so you can't really have him work a workshop unless you micro-manage him hardcore.

Other than that: emergency soldier.
Lock him up near the gates. When he turns during a siege, let him loose.

Quick newfag question about corpses and stockpiles. What's the difference between Corpse stockpiles and Refuse - Corpse / Body Parts stockpiles? Im try to make it so fresh animal tides and corpses are taken near the butcher while only rotting corpses are take to the refuse pile but im not sure which pile is which. Also i looked up the wiki and it wasn't really specific.

Two quick, dumb questions.

First, after the big update that added taverns and all that junk, was there a change to how farming is done? Let me expand by asking how the fuck do I feed my dwarves? I started with a TON of seeds. I figured some would be wasted when they were lower skilled. But 4 seasons in, even with decent growers, my seed count is dwindling.

Do plants replenish seeds or am I just dumb?

Second, is the image on starting a military in OP still up to date? I want to get one going the right way.
>>
>>147312049
Brewing and eating plants will naturally bring back more seeds than the ones you planted, eventually you will have more than you know what to do with.

ESPECIALLY ALL SEASONS PLANTS LIKE PLUMP HELMETS.

The only way to lose seeds is to cook a meal with the plant, which you will end up doing naturally just to get rid of the horrendous surplus.

Farming isn't complicated, a few simple plots can keep a fortress of hundreds satisfied. What you might want to do as you get woke is start mixing up their diet and introducing new industries of cheese etc to bring happy thoughts.

Military image is fine, use it and learn it.

If Today gets around to automatons as part of this series of major updates, do you think he'll update night creatures/necromancy to include those "constructed/altered" undead/monsters he mentioned as part of his greater night creature plans?

What do you think will come next after all this artifact/creation/early magic stuff? Boats or starting scenarios?
>>
>>147309578
>Can Forgotten Beasts raise their skills like everything else?
Everything else can't raise their skills. Only creatures with [INTELLIGENT] or [CAN_LEARN], which excludes forgotten beasts and most other creatures in the game.
>>
I know Toady wants more than just "a sword that burns stuff" for magical artifacts but I wonder what we'll see.

A floodgate that turns all water that passes through into clean, potable beer? A helmet that grants constant martial trance status in combat? Earrings that let you fly? A mug that turns its contents into easily-spilled magma?
>>
>>147313278
You have good ideas. I like you.
>>
>>147312639

I don't think he'll get to flesh golems etc in the "first pass"

Boats.
>>
Oh yeah and talking artifacts, that'll be interesting.

Warhammer style "demonic" sword or crossbow that tries to drive its wielder to murder.

A chair that swears, constantly.

An instrument that can double as a singer in a performance.
>>
>>147312639
Military arc>myths>scenarios

>>
>>147313278
> A mug that turns its contents into easily-spilled magma

I'd like to combine your ideas with the "you don't know what an artifact does until you try it" idea.
>>
>>147313278
A sword that hurts you.
A helm that hurts you.
A tome which teaches spells, all of which are variations of "A Spell That Hurts You" unfortunately.
>>
Still it would be cool to have some typical magic. Like ability to spray fire out of your hands and burn down a forest retreat or city, etc.
>>
Gloves that allow you to never lose hold of your weapon, motor nerve damage will cause any held items to be permanently stuck in your magical, vice-like grip.
>>
>>147313645
That's too conventional. Try the ability to spray fire out of your nose or something.
>>
>>147313645
That'll probably be inevitable, but Toady clearly wants to do more than that. I don't know how he will, or if he will manage it, but that stuff will probably be in regardless.
>>
>>147313772
Magical status/augmentation/spell that causes your spit to turn into a different liquid, like a disease-carrying FB reagent, venom, gnomeblight, or magma.
>>
>>147313902
That's easy enough to do now. I've already got flammable spit by accident (dragons don't spit, so you don't notice that their body fluids are flammable unless deliberately kept from being so... )

Oh snap, I think I'm gonna make their blood flammable, hacking into a dragon and having blood spurting out hot enough to melt copper? Fuck yeah!
>>
Since we saw all those fairies and whatnot with magic powers, it would be cool if you could like slay them and make a potion out of their blood or something mixed with like some other rare ingredients, and then gain some of their powers.

What about a talking sword/mace that hates violence and cries at the sight of blood? Maybe it could have a healing bonus, meaning it helps to repair the people it touches.

What about a healing artifact that heals people so hard they grow extra limbs, heads, organs and tumors all around their body, eventually suffocating in their own ever expanding mass? Make it an instrument, and anyone within a certain radius who listens to the performance begins to heal endlessly. Maybe make it like that one SCP, have everything from bacteria to plants grow and evolve at an incredibly fast pace until they overtake the whole area.

Masonry and carpentry doesn't really do much for you for those 90 points. Since you have decent planting, you can replace your plump helmets with milk and plump helmet seeds for double the food and more seeds. Each coal nets 8 units of fuel. Reconsider your investment. You can just take a log instead of a bar of charcoal. Take some sand for cheap bags. Either make some green glass shit or just make some green glass serrated blades to free up the bag for seeds, leaves, and flours. Organization, record keeping, conversaition, comedy, console, pacify are all easily trained and not worth the cost. If you aren't going to be making wood crafts, wood carving is a waste. Your soldier dwarf will learn that much fighting skill in a single fight if he uses a training weapon or just kills a bunch. Put it into dodge or shield.

He's gone lads.
Lithème died defending the last bit of civilization left on this blasted goblin-run hellscape world.

Like a spirit animal he came to us, for a reasons beyond my understanding till now, he knew he was needed here. To make the sacrifice as a last ditch defense against the chaos and destruction sweeping the world.

I have over 6 different temples in the fort, mostly to keep my peons focused and on task, but maybe there is something to this religion gig. I think the dwarven god of rebirth and sacrifice had something to do with this, she has the largest temple after-all.

Lithème earned the nickname Hagfilth, because he took out a really active FB with a shitlong legends list of atrocities.

So I am going to build the biggest fucking memorial the underdark has ever seen, any ideas what to add?

When a honey bee swarm is out in the open like that, it's either waiting for scouts to report back on a new hive site or taking a pit stop to rest the queen's fat ass. The process can take up to three days, during which time they're not eating or functioning normally. The bees gorge on honey before separating from the original hive, making them fat and slow. The queen is also not functioning normally, and her pheromones are what make the bees aggressive.
Stinging mammals is also fatal for honey bees, so they're reluctant to do so even under normal circumstances. Only defending an established hive with food stores and larvae is particularly worth it.
A swarm still can and will sting you if you really fuck with the queen, but otherwise the workers are all in energy conservation mode. Starvation and exposure are bigger and more immediate threats than a potential predator.

I'd recommend this anime if you are into anime at all. I know its not strictly /dfg/ related but its a great show that focus's on worldbuilding and character development. I only bring it up because one of the best characters in the show is a guy named Jonas that is a beekeeper.

Seriously this show is fucking based though, its like if old disney made a 50 episode epic about a fantasy world where the main character is a smart girl who grows up fascinated by the world around her and ends up becoming a beastmaster. The story is like, slow paced and focus's on her growing up, but it becomes directly linked to the rise and fall of their entire empire and the clashing military and royal governments within their nation. Its a super /tg/ style show.

Look into beekeeping someday. It's about as much work as taking care of a cat, and you'll get dozens of pounds of honey out of it.

I have been considering the idea of it.
But I have not much money and I live in an urbanish area in a small apartment with no lawn!
I used to live in the US, and I'm considering moving back some time. I could possibly do it there because there's more wide lawns and yards and such.

The problem with urban bee keeping is more with whatever the local law is than keeping the bees fed. There's enough weeds in a city that a hive is just fine food wise. They'll forage over 3 km from the hive if they need too.

Might freak out your neighbors though, despite how docile non-Africanized honey bees tend to be. It's not well known just how harmless they usually are.

Of course, I only have second hand experiences of it, but to me, it seems like they've managed to merge the worst confusian reactionism with the worst Anglo-American imperialism. It seems like the most un-chill culture in the world.

>people are respectful
That's still something, I guess.
>>
>>147333925

To distill a country to some short statements like that isn't really a good way to think. There are all kinds of people. Probably some Confucian elements do manifest in the sense of making people more respectful/deferent to the social order or whatever. But the good thing is people don't really go out of their way to troll other people irl. Like when I lived in America people would randomly call things out to me or honk their car horns to startle me and stuff.
But here theres much less of that.
And I feel like people are somehow less ego-centric. Like comparatively in the US people often talk in order to like boost their image or something? But here it seems like people actually just talk about the actual subject of conversation more earnestly and stuff.

It's pretty hard to characterize it but there's different ways of thinking and viewing the world here which are pretty interesting. I like some aspects of the USA more too, like people being more chill and less social pressure to do stuff.

Am I the only one who wishes that Toady would add puddles of water?

They would form when it rained, but only in terrain and on rough floors and foors made out of non block-materials. The puddles would appear on roads too, but only if said roads were in bad shape or made out of non-block materials. Any wagon pathing through a puddle would spray water to the sides, splashing anyone standing next to it(potentially leading to a negative though).

The puddle mechanic could also be used to have artificial water reservoirs get filled up by rain water, similar to how the murky pools currently work.

Whenever I try to fortress mode, I play with "have a fortress in working condition by it's Xth year" as my win condition, usually 5 years. Then I would start a new fortress on the same world. I start losing my grasp on things once 30+ dorf migrant waves start appearing, though, so I tend to abandon the fort and go back to adventure mode long before that point. On the bright side, I've technically never lost a fortress.

I REALLY want this
>>147342395
Probably to make sure that you're always enjoying yourself. Don't make yourself play when you don't want to. Also keep the wiki open.
>>
>>147342395
Always read the text on the screen carefully. Look at all the menus at least once.
You're presented with tools, learn to use them. Most importantly loo[k]ing around (that is, press [k] in game to identify tiles. In adventure mode it's 'l' by the way).
Secondly, plan things through before you do them and do experiments before you do critical stuff.
Lastly, keep an overview of what's happening: read the announcements, the combat logs, look at your [u]nit list (all tabs) and keep an eye on your stocks ([z]). Recognize problems early, and learn from your mistakes.

If something seems obtuse and counterintuitive, it probably is just that, not because you're missing something - so don't hesitate to look it up on the wiki.

Also, the game is a fantasy world simulator: You generate a world and interact with it in 3 different modes: fortress, adventurer, and legends. Fortress is probably what you want, but try out adventurer at some point too. Legends lets you read about the history of the world you generated.

So, try to be interested in the world, not a single fortress. If your fort fails, make a new one in the same world, or try to reclaim it. Maybe visit it with an adventurer, or read about your civilization's history in legends mode. And so on.

Again, read the text on the screen. All of it. On all screens. This is a reading kind of game.
>>
>>147342395
don't, read the wiki because the in game help is overwhelmingly inadequate for pretty much everything
>>
>>147302107
If we apreciate the idea romantically, I would make it work this way:

A dwarf or any other entity could fall in love every time he moves a tile as long as he has some lover/verygood´´friend´´ in his relations list.
It simplifies the abstract idea of falling in love between entities, it is realist, and it is very easy to mod(a person that isnt prone to love has a lower probability of falling in love, etc.)
It would work likely as some fey mood, which also is realist, and if two persons have the same fey mood toward eachother, they could consumate their love, in a variety of ways.
To make sure the whole world doesnt turn into a love figure of innumerate sides, some kind of personality matching algorithm needs to exist to make sure people ´´choose´´ the ´´correct´´ person to fall in love between all of their best friends, but it would have to be done in a way where love can or not be reciprocated, so romeo and julieta kind of stories can happen.
People would get very bad thoughts if been not loved, and all that stuff.
The system would be complete if you add some kind of way for people to fall in love with people they dont know, such as idealization, etc.
Love would be a potent force, being able to change life goals for dwarves, or make them have various life goals.

I know it is explained like shit, but if i wrote it well enough i think it would make some sense, what do you all think?

Two birds with one stone, as either party will fuck up the other party enough so that both can be considered defeated.
Forgotten Beasts rarely are matched equally (and even if they are, the fight usually ends with the victor being in fairly good condition)
>>
>>147341594
>will Toady ever make scimitars functionally different from short swords?
He probably will, but I wouldn't expect it anytime soon. You could do it yourself in seconds, though. Just increase the contact area of the slash, stab, and flat attacks. Slash somewhere between a longsword and a great sword, stab somewhere between a greatsword and and a halberd, flat probably the same as a battle axe. Maybe decrease the penetration value a little. And there you have a more accurate scimitar.

Use your imaginiation

Build themed temples to your gods.
Make cozy above-ground taverns for visitors
Build amazing libraries and have your dwarves study, reading books about animal physiology and writing about water displacement.
Or make a big zoo. Domesticate all the fauna that appears, both above-ground and underground, and get some from traders too.
Or make a big arena. Throw in your military dwarves, criminals, or useless migrants into the pit and have them fight captured beasts and goblins.
I once captured a minotaur in a cage by accident, so I built a labyrinth to throw my nobles into. Good times.

Pic related: it's a small temple I built for a deity of murder & war my civilization worshipped. A good portion of my military dwarves worshipped this deity, so I built this small thing connected to the barracks.
It's 3 z-levels high. The top just has some un-reachable statues of dwarves killing goblins and elves. The purple statue in the middle layer is a statue of the deity herself, with a platform for my dwaves to prey on. The bottom layer is a pit of slain enemies, forgotten beasts and invading races alike.

I could post other small works, if you're interested.

it's simple to manually update therapist and phobus
>>
Is there any point to an umodded first playthrough (like with Skyrim), or should I start my first game with stuff like Dwarf Therapist
>>
>>147376362
You should first learn how to play without therapist, dfhack, starter packs, and tilesets; this way you can play when new versions come out instead of bitching incessantly.
After that you can do what you want.
>>
>>147376362
Start with The Rapist and a tile pack if it makes you feel more comfortable, They're both really just qualrity of life things, dont even touch Masterwork or anything like that.

Adventurer mode needs no extra tools, and lets you feel out your worlds, then you can switch to fort mode once the tools update.

I love the idea of having all these people come to my tavern because "it's the place to be" or whatever, but I'd wish they'd fucking leave eventually. I've got like 40 randoms that have been turned down for residency who never go away.

>>
>>147380167
It is hard to tell, actually.

It seems like you get the benefits when using the skill, but the game doesn't display all of it fully.

So even if you should be an elite wrestler due to natural skill you'll show as a recruit until you skill something up.

But when you try to wrestle it is as easy as it would be with elite skill.

>>
>>147386871
The problem is that the club you're hitting the giant with has the density of balsa wood.

I wish the game let me customize weapon structure more. Virtually indestructible, ultra-light metal offers a lot more opportunities than the dwarves are using. Gold-cored, adamantine-shelled bludgeoning weapons are just the start. Imagine a long adamantine strand with a base metal weight at each end. Or a paper-thin sword ten meters long. Or an adamantine tube that you fill with water and then heat in magma to get a cylinder full of thousand-Celsius supercritical water you can use to drive a high-energy potato cannon, or just spray at enemies to flash-boil them alive. Even a simple valve mechanism should work well, when the material used has no elasticity.

I had a 2x2 a few forts ago without adamantine. As long as I wasn't planning on doing something short term I wouldn't ever go below 3x3. I think pocket worlds are fine with everything else left normal, you're much more likely to be in siege range.

I remember reading a good quote on a DF article by a player. It was with regard to the learning curve that doesn't come up as much in modern games, along with the fact you can't win. Something like "It's about learning enough so you don't lose to mundane, boring things like starvation so you can eventually lose to interesting things, like Werelizard outbreaks". FPS death is just another mundane way of losing that you can long see coming.

For the first time, I decided to make a memorial hall for my deceased dorfs.

Each niche in the hall has one memorial slab, and one statue depicting an event from the life of that dorf. The results are pretty cool, and in combination, the slabs and statues give pretty much information about the dorf in question.

At first, I only did it for my militias, but the results were so satisfying that I decided to do it for my civvies, as well.

>>147427692
Perfect world won't affect either directly. For goblins, all they need is places to settle and time. They can settle in more biomes than any other civ so that shouldn't be an issue if you're getting other races normally.
For towers, to get more increase your number of civs and run worldgen longer. Dwarven and human civs all have a chance to worship a god of death, who has a chance to grant a slab to a creature seeking immortality. More civs=more deathgod chances=more tower chances.

The really interesting thing about adventure roles is the implications they bring about what needs to be changed and added to the game.

For a trivial example, you need boats before you can play as a seafaring pirate.

Judges (and thieves), imply a functioning law & order system, as well as a sense of ownership and value. All of which is closely related to economy, so I think that might play into why a lot of people are excited about that.
Similarly, wizards obviously mean the implementation of magic.

For medical jobs, the changes that would need to be made wouldn't be all that far reaching and consequently it doesn't seem to be all that exciting.

I think in 20 years or so, when DF is a lot more feature complete, you'll see a very diverse adventure mode player base with various interesting ways to play. Though the most common will probably still be "generic skyrim hero/monster hunter/warrior character".

Personally, I'm mostly looking forward to playing as
>explorer/mountaineer (continents, mountains, glaciers, poles)
>explorer/archaeologist (like explorer, but with ruins, catacombs, etc)
>cartographer/surveyor (creating your own maps by going to uncharted areas and selling them to civilizations which can use the knowledge; digging in a few spots and finding ore deposits, etc)

because I just like to do these kind of things, but also because of their implications.
Generating longer, more interesting cultural histories (ten thousands of years), and generating more plausible geological features (tectonic plate simulation, better erosion, volcanic eruptions) seem to me very very interesting features.

Of course having a global, functioning economy, being able to invade other sites, and better economic balancing (more elaborate farming for example), along with improved performance and a more consistent UI, and even multi-tile creatures and boats are much more important and bigger features, but I can't help but be more interested in the other aspects mentioned above.

Oh! Don't forget that 64 bit does actually seem to have better performance in various areas(>>147398223, >>147398714
)

32 bit worldgen for 3 minutes: year 184, 150k pop

64 bit worldgen for 3 minutes: year 186, 158k pop

32 bit worldgen for 300 years: 18 minutes, 163k pop

64 bit worldgen for 300 years: 16 minutes, 186k pop

The same thing should happen with older forts, where fps death gets pushed off longer than previously, and it seems to be quite a bit easier to move around congested areas with an adventurer as well.
>>
People say the new combat system is necessarily more lethal, but I would say more that it more tightly depends on toughness, strength, and size. For example I was playing a base size 35000 race, a brown recluse man, with only above average strength, and I had to chip away at a human's skull before actually killing him with a whip (OUCH). I think I even got a broken result on him, BEFORE the hit that actually pushed skull fragments through his brain.

Meanwhile one punch from a superhuman strength large demigod elf to the neck on a human tore it open, bruised the spine, and generally fucked them up.

No, it's easier to test with world-gen cause I can slap the same seeds/settings down and see what changes, but the same performance increases should hold for older forts too. It's pretty noticeable how much quicker the later (usually slooooowwww) years of world-gen are, in the 300 year runs I mentioned above, the 32 bit only hit year 286 while the 64 bit was finished, and the last 2 minutes was spent on that 14 years to 300.

Their is no "for their" on vermin hatred. It's just "She absolutely detests worms."
In any case the hatred related thoughts only trigger in 3 instances, 2 of which happen by sharing a tile with vermin. "was pestered by _" can trigger from any vermin, which is a behavior that doesn't transfer up to giant and man variants. I doubt the "accosted by _" thought does either.
The third thought triggers when they see a hated vermin in a cage. That's the best possibility for seeing the hatred thought trigger from a nonvermin creature, but I've never seen it happen. I'm doubtful.

Rate my prison design.

It's 13 levels above the ground, and 4 levels above the roof of the rest of my fort. The chains are made out of lead, and it rains almost constantly.

Did you trade it off to someone else in an attempt to be rid of your anvils?

Holy shit, now they're sticking my best miner(I have three) in there. Thanks mr Mayor, sir.

What should I do to the mayor to pay the poor miner back?

Be sure to give your mayor's quarters to that miner dwarf

Shit even with the way things are now I have fun just wandering around writing poems and songs and performing for people. Going into a tavern and masterfully singing a song while drunks beatbox and play air kazoo near me is always hilarious.

I'm really looking forward to the interactions between magic and music at some point down the line. Whipping out an artifact fiddle and playing it in the middle of battle and having everyone compelled to dance until they all die of exhaustion and then still keep dancing as corpses is a pretty sweet mental image.

Fucking said and done. I'll strip the mayor off her comfy quarters, instead give her a bed in a cold rough cave, with only a water source(without a well) and a floor hatch where food can be dropped down for as long as I remember her.

Meanwhile, the miner will inherit the mayor's quarters. The walled in mayor will have to continue to do her duties as mayor, however.

The baroness will do all the meetings and other important stuff, won't she?

Try building it again if you haven't already. If an object needed for a job is in a building that is deconstructed the job will fail with the "lost or destroyed" message.

Not always.
My fort spans about 111z, which is pretty much as vertical as possible, and is anything but efficient.

I kinda feel the sudden urge of creating a coalition of spider people to fight for our rights

So, to that guy that talked about revamping the medical system, how would surgeoning exactly work in adventure mode? Do you guys have any ideas?

I think it's safe to say that my miner has been avenged. As soon as he gets out of jail, he'll have the mayor's quarters(including the office and dining room) waiting for him.

Should i force her to engrave pictures of herself being tormented by the miner?
>>
>>147303318
Use the scroll-wheel.
>>
>>147454349
What the fuck did the miner anyway?
>>
>>147454524
Better to have just "dwarves" do it.
The miner was jailed, which sparked an outrage and uprising amongst the people.
>>
>>147455424
He didn't make any spears for the mayor.

You know what? I think I'll just make the miner my mayor. Meanwhile, I'll give my former mayor some skills and tools she might use to make her quarters more comfortable. The work will be good for her. When I see fit, I might let her back into society.

Use dump to move its corpse/parts to a shrine.
Line the side walls with statues depicting it's legend, in chronological order from the doors to the furthest wall.
Engrave images of its kills in the floor.
Bathe its bones in purifying magma, so that its soul can be reborn as a dwarf and bring glory unto the Mountainhome.

Would love to m8, but he passed on in the river and his body lines the cavern lakes.

Made dozens of commissioned Gold statues in various poses and still images fighting against the various denizens of the cavern. Put them in the massive military grave site so they have Cerberus watching their souls as they pass on.

Can you add historic events yet, e.g. someone beign removed from a position?
If so, add that
>>
>>147459651
Yes. In an older version dwarves almost entirely just engraved one of a woman in the fort being removed as the mayor even while engraving her bedroom.
>>
Is there a graphics pack going around that's actually up to date with the new versions? I've looked around on the forum and wiki, and the only one I found was one that's essentially still ASCII.
>>
>>147459651
Sadly, I don't think you can. i agree that it should be an option in future versions, though.

You can choose to engrave historical events, but you can't choose them directly. Instead, you just choose a site or hist fig, and the RNG picks an event related to it.
