I asked in the previous thread about my STR build but while thinking things over, I started wondering if I should put the last five levels towards ARC so I can use the HMS and whatever tools that would allow for. Is the HMS worth it on a pure STR or should I put the points elsewhere?
>>
>>147189158
18 Arc is a decent investment on a Str HLMS build.
>>
Is there an objectively better option for non-BT builds in PVP in terms of guns between Hunter's Pistol/Blunderbuss/Ludwig's Rifle?
>>
>>147190315
Repeating pistol if you want to do damage. I usually have it and a hunter pistol equipped. I use the hunter pistol for parries and the repeating pistol (w/BMA) for damage.
>>
>>147190315
Use the Blunderbuss with specific gems you can turn it into a fucking cannon. Don't listen to lucy he hasn't actually played PvP in ages and has like 200 hours tops.

>>
>>147191184
it's only a cannon if you've got high BLT, though

plus you have to be right in their dick for that to happen, so good luck getting that to work consistently
>>
>>147191380
Hunters forever will be doomed to suffer from blood-addling and be drawn into the Hunter's Nightmare for being part of a tradition that helped massacre an entire village.
>>
>>147191630
but why involve random Yharnamites as well? they did nothing wrong, but they too suffer from Bloodlust and blood-addling. Hell, you even find normie hunters in the Nightmare. The Orphan is one petty-ass motherfucker
>>
>>147191630
Why was everyone in the Nightmare trying to hide the secret and the Orphan? I imagine it was out of shame, but wouldn't they want the Nightmare to end as well?
>>
>>147192046
Why would they want the nightmare to end? It's pretty safe to assume the curse is going to continue. The Nightmare functions as a convenient prison/asylum.
>>
>>147192046
I always thought that the Church was trying to hide the Orphan as a means of trying to cut their losses, and shame
>have a staff of Hunters
>half of them are perpetually half blood-drunk
>allow access to a pocket dimension of endless, consequence-free slaughter
>that also contains massively bad PR for the organization
the predictable happens. Plus, you've got a precedent for Hunters betraying the Church after getting set loose in the Nightmare, like Maria, so best cut bait and run

>>147192368
no. Hunters only show up in the Nightmare upon death. Nightmare or no Nightmare, the HoH or similar organizations would still need to go around and clean up the blood-drunk Hunters. Until the Orphan dies, blood-drunkenness will still plague the Hunters and Yharnam, and so it's in everyone's best interests for it to end

>>147191847
Yharnamites 420blazed too much of the red medicine bredah, they went off the deep end. You can only smoke so much Elder God stuff before you go batshit bonkers.
>>
>>147191847
Random Yharnamites were never involved. The Yharnamites that are in the Nightmare were Hunters. Remember your Ludwig lore.
>>
>>147187953
Rancid beasts, every last one of us...
>>
>>147192610
But I was wondering why Maria, someone trapped in the Nightmare but still obviously somewhat sane, was trying to hide the Orphan. Doesn't seem like there's a clear answer, though.
>>
>>147193385
I meant normie Yharnamites, who weren't tied to the Dream, is all.
>>
>>147193561
They're not cursed.
>>
>>147193468
Shame?
>>
>>147193632
More like regret.
>>
>>147192046
I don't know about everyone. For the most part the Hunters there seem pretty unaffiliated with each other. The ones in the Clocktower are probably just insane and doing what they would have done in the real world, or manifestations of someone else's subconscious, behaving similarly to how they were remembered.

In the case of Brador, he never cut off affiliation with the Church in spite of his circumstances. But he's obviously fucked up in the head. Ludwig is similar, but he's debatably even crazier than Brador due to his predicament.

Besides Maria, Ludwig and Brador are the only person I can think of trying to hide the secret. Simon, the only other Hunter with his sanity (Maria and Brador are fucked up) besides the player, is trying to uncover it.
>>
>>147193468
well, we know that she felt intense guilt over her actions with the Church, and with helping the Hunters in Byrgenwerth.

I had always thought that she was responsible for the creation of the Hunter's Nightmare. The Nightmare serves as an army that protects the fishing hamlet -- any interloper who arrives in the Nightmare to fuck up the Orphan has to get through a literal army of blood-crazed, rabid Hunters and beasts. Good luck. Even the MC isn't "expected" to be able to do so until they're end-game level, which makes them among the most powerful creatures in the whole universe. It's a pretty efficient security system desu.
>>
>>147193794
Yeah, "everyone" was a mistake. I realized right after that I was really just referring to Maria and Brador.
>>
>>147193468
>Still obviously somewhat sane.
Just because she's composed and soft-spoken doesn't mean she's not batshit anon. But I agree with what the others posted. It was probably shame and regret.

>>147193561
Yeah, those guys don't appear in the Nightmare. If they weren't Hunters they're not there.
>>
>>147193794
Ludwig isn't trying to protect anything, he only attacks you because he's a crazy beast.
>>
>>147193613
Well, they've gone nuts with blood-addling and are stuck in the Nightmare as a result. I'd say that's pretty cursed.

>>147193379
What I'm proposing is the idea that the Blood didn't drive people mad with bloodlust until AFTER Byrgenwerth fucked up the Orphan. The Orphan's "curse of Blood" was making the stuff addictive

>>147193941
you can be a Hunter and not be tied to the Dream. Wasn't that Ludwig's whole gimmick, raising an army of such people?
>>
>>147194103
Everyone in the Nightmare is either a hunter, a beast or a fishing hamlet inhabitant.
>>
>>147193951
I don't think he's there protecting anything intentionally, I just assumed he was being used as something of a guard dog even if he wasn't aware of it.

>>147194103
Yeah, you can be a Hunter and not be tied to the dream. That Ludwig thing is precisely what I was talking about. The Hunters he raised were probably drawn into the Nightmare after becoming blood-addled, but the point I was trying to make is that they didn't need to be connected to the Hunter's Dream beforehand to be confined to the Nightmare. I think we just misunderstood each other though.
>>
>>147194180
are the fishing hamlet guys even "real," (as in, people ported into the Nightmare), or are they just projections of people who existed IRL?
>>
>>147194336
The fishing hamlet itself was ripped from the waking world and placed in the nightmare imo

>>
>>147194547
Byrgenwerth is near a lake though, Fishing Hamlet was close to the sea.
>>
>>147194719
Willem got things started, but he also warned everyone of the dangers of blood. Laurence then proceeded to completely not listen and start the Healing Church, and then later he called in the Moon Presence which made things only a whole new level of fucked-up.

So I'd say that Laurence deserves plenty of blame too.
>>
>>147195103
Laurence called the MP before he even left Byrgenwerth, since Willem apparently knew that Gehrman was trapped in the Dream.

IMO they called the MP to deal with the Chalice Dungeons
>have Hunters spelunkan in the CDs
>come across uber-superhuman beings
>try and fight them as normal human beings
>lol no
they called the MP to progress their research
>>
>>147195103

He didn't need to inject mystical blood to go on a killing spree in a village of innocent people and turn his own school into a monster house.

If you feel like you're doing good damage you don't need to level, you need to work on your dodging.
If your damage is too low upgrade your weapon and get better gems. Blood level isn't very important, and 53 is enough for Rom.

Mergo died at birth and the calcified remains compose the Yharnam stone. The version you encounter is just their consciousness trapped in a nightmare realm similar to the orphan. Killing the nurse probably frees them which would explain why queen Yharnam bows her head in gratitude afterwards.

The Moon Presence has a lot of connections to Queen Yharnam, so it may have just been trying to help.

The Eldritch Truth is the mere existence of these things at all. That's sort of the whole point of cosmic horror, that these totally out there bizarre things exist at odds to what we thought we knew about the universe. Eldritch is an antiquated word that just means weird or strange, it just got popularized through post-Lovecraft writers and has now come to mean very specifically weird alien shit.

What are the odds of a new From game similar to Bloodborne? I know that sequels suck but if we got something similar to what Dark Souls was to Demon Souls (similar setting/gameplay but different world/lore) then it could be golden.

I LITERALLY can't get excited for any games nowadays, Bloodborne was that good for me and I just need something similar from Fromsoft.

Deathmarch isn't that bad, probably the best one there. If the lute animations played different notes that were thoughtfully selected it could be pretty cool.

Beastblade is fine but a bit boring. Gillian's would look out of place in Bloodborne even with the Powder Kegs, it's a bit underdesigned for them. Starlighter has a good design but would be redundant considering arcane builds already have blacksy eye and augur.

Starslayer looks bad.

Why do people keep using Dark Souls 2 and 3 as an example? The problems with Dark Souls 3 were fatigue, nothing more. It was a fantastic game that is better than the first one in more ways than not. DaS2 was the B team.

There have been 4 Souls games set in a near identical setting that was already pretty generic.

How is Bloodborne 2, (that would essentially be another Lovecraft/Victorian setting) even remotely comparable?

DaS3 was fine, but as I said before, the setting has worn out it's welcome. People are burnt out on the Souls setting, and it's replayability took a huge hit as a result. From games live and die by the playerbase's willingness to explore the world and learn more about it, and they don't do this if they're bored with the world.

Fatigue is why making sequels to "souls-like" games is a mistake, no matter how good the game is to newcomers

People us DS2/3 as examples of why we don't want a BB2 because of the serious perceived downgrade in quality, with DS2 being near universally reviled for a whole host of reasons and DS3 being generally seen as a disappoint to a lot of people.

Miyazaki has apparently stated he doesn't like sequels. Bloodborne is a perfectly concise, tight story and setting, it doesn't need a sequel. Miyazaki went on to Bloodborne after DS1, supervising DS2 only, while another team without his direction made it. Another major problem is we now know the twist of the game. You can't replicate that again. Either B Team will come along and say 'no it was actually something ELSE all along!' or they'll delve waaaay too deep and explain absolutely everything away, ruining the point of the game. There is nothing you can do.

What Bloodborne could use is some more minor DLC, like a cape option, or a mid-sized new area to explore with some cool little story attached that, like the Hunter's Nightmare, doesn't necessarily affect the base game's story.

It really is not. This is a better, more fitting description for Demon's Souls, not Bloodborne. Bloodborne is kind of a mess, it leaves way too much open that you can't really make too much sense out of. You could certainly try. You could certainly get close, but none of it is really satisfying. I agree though, it doesn't need a sequel, because a sequel would fucking ruin it regardless. What it needs is more DLC.

>>147204389
>>147204432
>How is it possible to have Victorian/Lovecraftian fatigue when there are a total of 1~ game that I know of with that setting?

Because one of the things that made Bloodborne big was the sudden reveal that it's not just mad doctors and werewolves, that the Gothic exterior was just the surface level of an entire background of cosmic horror. You can't do that reveal again, you can't discover those weird secrets again. Part of the truly unique charm of the game is wandering through the Forbidden Woods and finding weird blue mushroom men, and then Byrgenwerth, and then Rom, noticing how these are really really clashing with the werewolves and hunters in long coats being stylish, then the Nightmare and Amygdalae perched on every single goddman building and finding you were in a cosmic horror story all along. That reveal is gone.

What else can you do that isn't just more of the same? What can you add that doesn't ruin the weird mystery of the original game that left you wondering but unable to ever truly comprehend the scope of the horror? You can't just trick us again and say something else is behind it all, that's a shit cop out. Bloodborne is too tightly designed to revisit again in a full game. Some small, non-connected DLCs? Sure, I'd love that, but an entire game just seem infeasible.

The thing about BB is that it has a tightly confined story as well that has a clear ending.
In DS you could just be like, "oh well the fire is going out again, better release a new game so nameless 20 something year olds can keep it going since this is what they want so much I guess?".

BB's story revolves around one place with game mechanics and weaponry that are specific to that place and the point of history that place is in.

The only way I can see a sequel sort of working is if they have a story where scholars want to use technology to ascend to becoming great ones there by bringing in the industrial age to Yarhnam and the areas that surround it.
Suddenly Yarhnam is a place people go to because its the center of manufacturing and technology, not because of blood healing. Eventually the scholars use a machine to recreate the ritual of Mensis and actually capture a great one with it, which beckons more great ones to Yarhnam and there by plunges the entirety of Yarhnam into a nightmare.
And you the player character are using steam punkish trick weapons to outright stop the great ones or scholars?

fuck it idk
>>
>>147204946
>it leaves way too much open that you can't really make too much sense out of

But that's the whole idea. It's a cosmic horror story, it's based in the genre of weird fiction, whose purpose as a genre is to create horror stories in which the protagonists and by extensions readers are left ultimately with an event that by all rights shouldn't have happened, but did, it's a mystery. Lovecraft used it to get across a specific concept of human limitation and ignorance, and the fact that even though we become a squid, we still don't truly understand the ramifications and background to all that transpired, and you can't. It's a Gothic tragedy of cosmic proportions.
>>

>>
>>147204568

>No, Dark Souls 1 is its own story, setting and universe

So that's how you define rehashes? Going by that argument most Mario/Zelda games aren't rehashes. Uncharted 2 and 3 aren't rehashes.

Mechanically, Dark Souls 1 is a complete rehash.

>>147204617

>BB's setting is wrapped up in a neat little bow. There's nothing new to add that wouldn't be CYCLES tier garbage, or overexplaining backstory. And with nothing new, interest wanes

And who said it would have to be a direct continuation of BBs story or even its lore? Why not another Dark Souls tier sequel (relative to Demon Souls)?

>>147205057

>Because one of the things that made Bloodborne big was the sudden reveal that it's not just mad doctors and werewolves

Not really, I was totally spoiled on that and the game is still a 10/10 GOAT master piece to me.

I just don't see any valid arguments as to why we shouldn't get a Bloodborne type game from Fromsoft in a similar setting.
>>
>>147205057
That reveal is gone, but with a story like this one there's so much more to explore. A story does not need some grand reveal or twist to be good. A story does not need to be complex or baffling to be interesting.

We could explore the background of the Great Ones or see the beginnings of the outbreak. Find out more about the surrounding lands and if they have similar problems. There's a very deep world that's been built here and it has a lot of holes that leaves a lot of possibilities for a sequel without destroying the first.
>>
>>147205405
>Why not another Dark Souls tier sequel (relative to Demon Souls)?

I was, too, but looking at how the game handled its themes, it's a fucking masterpiece. If I hadn't known about the cosmic horror, I would have shit myself because there isn't a game out there today that does it anywhere near as tastefully as Bloodborne. That cosmic horror reveal really matters.

>I just don't see any valid arguments as to why we shouldn't get a Bloodborne type game from Fromsoft in a similar setting.

Oh, I'd love that, too. I want fast paced visceral action with sick ass 18th century style. I just don't want more Bloodborne, because it's perfect as it is.

>>
>>147205586
But this goes completely against the core concept of cosmic horror. It's absolutely anithetical to WHY the genre was a horror genre. If it's all explained away, you just have another dark fantasy setting with pointless Lovecraft references for surface flavour. Bloodborne's willingess to tell you fuck all is what makes it basically one of the best pieces of modern cosmic horror media in several fucking decades. God knows people have tried, and have mostly failed, but Bloodborne handles it all very tastefully. As a lifelong Lovecraft who sees this stuff get mauled by people who don't know the source material, Bloodborne will forever hold a place in my heart.

I get kind of pissy when people say this because the idea of just informing the player that there is a larger world beyond the scope of the game is just to enrich the game world but the difference between those places and the place you're exploring is that they are just normal ordinary places with nothing exciting going on in them.
Yeah it would be nice to see Catarina or see where Eileen comes from but neither of those places have a scourge or undead/dying world problem. They're just meant to be concepts for the player to think about while they play the game, if you did actually visit them they'd be really boring most likely.

It can be explaine partially. There are a few things we know now for sure. Not much, but some. If we know 5%, for example, we might learn an additional 5% of what there is to know about them. That still leaves us with very little knowledge over all but a lot of material to work with nonetheless.

Yeah, but the issue is, if that happens IRL, all you get at worst is the biological equivalent to an error message, that is, you don't understand it and just go "huh?". There's no latch-key info out there that will just drive people crazy from merely experiencing it. Remember that barely 70 years ago, a handful of scientists developed the atomic bomb- and all of them were around to see the massive nuclear standoff between USA and USSR and directly impending atomic annihilation of all of the world as a result. And they knew that they'd be the ones entirely to fault for it.

To my knowledge, nobody from the Manhattan project went violently insane over this truth; the possibly most horrible truth ever crafted in the history of the human race. The ghosts that they have called, so to speak. I can't figure some existential bullshit about how we're all just the dirt underneath the fingernails of an outer god to even faze anybody. Most people would be too stupid to grasp it in the first place.

>What a shitty plot device

I don't think you get the concept of cosmic horror. It's been heavily diluted by decades of genre deconstruction and analysis, as well decades of incredibly bad 'Lovecraftian horror' written by hacks like August Derleth and pretty much everyone after him he has unfortunately had an influence on. The impact of the existential horror is considerably lessened to our modern minds. Existential dread doesn't hit us like it did a 1920s audience when the concept of stuff like evolution was still hotly debated (Scopes Monkey Trial, look it up) and Einstein was still publishing his research.

Cosmic horror tries to stress the limitations of the human mind, that there is a definite limit to what our sense can perceive and what your mind can process. Lovecraft wrote at a time when a lot of what we know today was either brand new or didn't even exist. This is all brought over into Bloodborne whose setting mirrors those times and mindsets. Your edgy internet finds aren't supposed to be any way relatable to an entity which redefines the way you look at humanity and the surrounding universe. It's not about what Cthulhu IS, it's about what Cthulhu MEANS.

>>

Which was all the result of long research and testing, by humans.

If we make contact with an alien species some day, whenever it may be, it changes everything, forever. And not everyone will take it the same way, which is the worst part. It's partly this which is the existential horror. Remember in The Call of Cthulhu, people took it differently. Some people had weird dreams, some went into fevers, some formed bizarre cults, some went violently insane.
>>
>>147211256
Because when we would just use our gamertags in the name fields without a trip to try to set up duels, co-op, and fight clubs people would impersonate us to try to disrupt it, just for shits and giggles. The secure trip prevents that.

I also love how the opening paragragh could be refering to BB.

>There is reason to hope that my experience was wholly or partly an hallucination—for which, indeed, abundant causes existed. And yet, its realism was so hideous that I sometimes find hope impossible. If the thing did happen, then man must be prepared to accept notions of the cosmos, and of his own place in the seething vortex of time, whose merest mention is paralysing. He must, too, be placed on guard against a specific lurking peril which, though it will never engulf the whole race, may impose monstrous and unguessable horrors upon certain venturesome members of it. It is for this latter reason that I urge, with all the force of my being, a final abandonment of all attempts at unearthing those fragments of unknown, primordial masonry which my expedition set out to investigate.
>>
>>147210076
>Most people would be too stupid to grasp it in the first place.

The Byrgenwerth scholars weren't stupid.

>To my knowledge, nobody from the Manhattan project went violently insane over this truth

I don't remember any of the characters in Bloodborne becoming violently insane as an immediate side effect of their research into the Eldritch Truth. The only, genuinely insane characters I can recall are the Yharnamites whom have lost their minds from the effects of the blood, which is pretty much like a drug. The insane characters in the game are the victims of the Byrgenwerth scholar's insatiable lust for more knowledge, and by extension, power. And those victims know little to nothing as to what is really going on. Of course there are a select few Church/Byrgenwerth affiliated mad men, but they have their own prompts for their affliction outside of the Eldritch truth. They're never violent because of the truth, they're only ever violent in the interest of seeking more of it. With that being said, let's look outside of the scope of Bloodborne.

>To my knowledge, nobody from the Manhattan project went violently insane over this truth; the possibly most horrible truth ever crafted in the history of the human race.

I also have no idea how this affected their psyche, but it's worth looking into. That aside, you've got to remember that what they were doing was grounded in science. They made that bomb using things they could prove as tools. Looking into things like the abominable and abnormal, that the human psyche would never and had never considered, is different. Back to this though.

>I can't figure some existential bullshit about how we're all just the dirt underneath the fingernails of an outer god to even faze anybody. Most people would be too stupid to grasp it in the first place.

On this again though, I've only explored a small amount of Lovecraftian lore, but from what I understand so far this is a gross over exaggeration. I'll continue shortly.
>>
>>147212054
As I have written, I've only explored a small amount of Lovecraftian lore (The Shadow Over Innsmouth). The horrors in that story were seen as abhorrent more so than unbelievably appalling, they were foul. It's difficult for me to explain without spoiling the story, but there was no insanity in denying those horrors. The insanity was in accepting those horrors as natural when they so clearly weren't meant to be, when they were evil and blasphemous. Even then, the insanity it bred was not intrinsically violent. What I'm getting at here is that Lovecraft's works, which people typically look to as the "core" of celestial horror, were much more subtle.
>>
>>147210063
Innsmouth is pretty short and pretty cool. Especially if you've played the Old Hunters.

"Most tomb prospectors, members of the Healing Church chosen to explore the old labyrinth, are unable to withstand the weight of the old knowledge, and go mad.

This attire is worn by those lost souls.

Truth oft resembles madness, inaccessible to the dull of mind. Those who go mad are merely thoughtful souls who failed to reach any conclusions.

The appendages draped across them are said to be a kind of protective charm, or at least, that is what these lost souls believe with all their hearts."

I think it's also important to stress very few people went violently insane in Lovecraft's stories. Plenty of people faint, or freak out, but very rarely does outright madness overcome people. That's a really bad myth that got perpetrated by one fuck named August Derleth whose chokehold on Lovecraft's works after his death really did a number on his character and how people read his stories. It persists to this day and is a damn shame. People equate Lovecraft with insanity and tentacles when there's much more.

I need help killing the Loran Darkbeast

>>
>>147212568
Let's also remember Bloodborne takes many cues from Gothic literature which was romantic, full of intense emotion, passion and madness. Mix that sensibility in with Lovecraftian unknowable knowledge, you have Bloodborne's heady mix of horror.

The tomb prospectors, like any good Gothic character, go mad with a revelation of some kind, or are merely enveloped by emotion. But whose to say their madness is violent insanity? Willem didn't go mad from Insight, be started changing.
>>
>>147213078
"are unable to withstand the weight of the old knowledge, and go mad"
This line is pretty self explanatory to me. They're not just emotionally invested, they're demented.
When you meet labyrinth madmen and forgotten madmen they chase you and try to kill you. Sounds pretty violent to me.
>>
>>147213389
Or obsessed. That's one thing seekers of forbidden knowledge have been in any story about them ever, obsessed. And Labyrinth Madmen might just be plain old violently nuts after being some of the first people to discover a catastrophic truth about their world, everyone takes the discovery of the eldritch truth differently. As I had said about The Call of Cthulhu, different people took it differently, from cults to killing people to just getting bad dreams. I bet there's scores of Byrgenwerth scholars who took it the same way. Like Laurence who founded a Church about it and the blood.

Please refer to >>147183662

No amount of arguing will get you any ground with this man, regardless of how right you are. Your best bet is to just ignore him.
>>
>>147219775
It means that he inherited the League from someone else. Whether he is the beast eater or only inherited the title is debatable, but even if he is, his rune coming to symbolize the confederates does NOT mean that they didn't exist before it. Think of it like a logo; a lot of Companies are much older than their current logo or slogan.
>>
>>147220080
How could it be a logo when the Impurity rune being embedded into your fucking dome is the ONLY thing that allows the league to exist? Why would Valtr have the title Beast Eater instead of just Master of the League if he wasn't the original Beast Eater?
The ability to see vermin only came from Valtr swallowing a entire beast whole, and then he passed on that ability to others through the Impurity rune, which in some way or another faded from him. At this point all the item descriptions DIRECTLY point to this being true.
Going with the Nuclear option, many thanks
>>147219995 ,

>>
>>147220706
Because they already pass down the helmet. It could be an image thing, where every leader is thought of as the beast eater, or where they pass it off as it being the same person, when we actually know that it is not.

>At this point all the item descriptions DIRECTLY point to this being true.

False.

>Master's Iron Helm

>"An iron helm resembling an upside-down bucket.

>A single hole allows one to peek out with a single eye, which is probably all that its original owner had.

>The iron helm is passed down among masters of the League. Valtr had in fact lost the ability to see Vermin long ago."

This item heavily implies that Val was not the first master of the league.

It's hard to tell in his actual writing since he is an exceptionally good writer, especially when it comes to imagery.

Though from what I know about him as a person, he was pretty autistic, not genuinely high functioning autism tier of course but more like sperglord living with his parents tier. Keep in mind this is a man who had to be financially supported entirely by his family and wife because he absolutely refused to get a job and hardly charged anything for his stories.

Don't forget this poem by him

When, long ago, the gods created Earth
In Jove's fair image Man was shaped at birth.
The beasts for lesser parts were next designed;
Yet were they too remote from humankind.
To fill the gap, and join the rest to Man,
Th'Olympian host conceiv'd a clever plan.
A beast they wrought, in semi-human figure,
Filled it with vice, and called the thing a Nigger.

Derleth pls go

This is a HUGE myth about Lovecraft that is still perpetuated today. The pre-1918 Lovecraft was an actual shut in weirdo separated from reality due to dozens of childhood illnesses both physical and mental that really fucked up his social development, not to mention his weird fucking mother and dad who died to syphilis in a madhouse.

But then he began writing for the amateur press with the story 'The Tomb', and later 'Dagon', he really came out of his shell once he began talking via the magazines. In fact, by the end of his life, he was in regular communication with over 90 people across the US by letter - fucking snail mail - and was putting people in communication with other people. He was responsible for a few romances, too. And those letters were fucking long. It's estimated he wrote at least 100,000 letters in his life time. He had a huge circle of friends and fellow writers and he traveled all across the US to meet them despite being poor as shit during the Depression (he took night coaches to sleep on them instead of renting a hotel room). He was widely known among his friends to be very friendly, very polite and actually quite a funny guy. Yes, he was a bit awkward in some regards, had some particularly strong social views early on that lost him some friends and was utterly asexual leading to a pretty disastrous marriage, but was otherwise a lovely guy who, had he not fallen to malnourishment and stomach cancer, would have continued to mellow out later into life.

Long range weapon, poison knives.

Draw him down the stairs of the cathedral, keep him on your ass.

Hit him from outside the doors of the cathedral, he can't leave, but will still try to attack you. Eventually, he will go back up the steps.

Run in, draw him back down.

Rinse and repeat til the little edgelord fuck is dead.

Unrelated:

Is it significant that the Pthumerian chalice dungeons don't have any beast enemies in them, and that Loran does?

What did they mean by this
>>
>>147270178
I think the Pthumerians, for the most part, ascended. They first made contact, it's where Byrgenwerth learned to do their shit. So they're all old, dead Pthumerians. Abhorrent and Darkbeasts come from Loran, I'm pretty sure they fell to a beast scourge and the sands swallowing them up.

>>
>>147253798
The both do. For the Abhorrent Beast the tactic is to dash in poke, and get out.

The only thing you really need for the HBLB one is a weapon with a horizontal swing. Vertical swings and poke would work too, they just require more precise aiming so it is slightly harder. The main take away for this one is where to stand (just outside his leg), not to lock on, and how to control your camera so you can tell when to dodge in spite of the camera (by watching the leg he lifts).

I think both apply to a wide list of weapons, or at the very least, at least one good weapon from every build type (e.g. str, skll, quality).

Killed Cleric Beast with 8 molotovs and a visceral, melted Amelia with a bone ash-fueled Flamesprayer, and managed to get HMS at BL 36 with the help of a friendly pizza cutter cooperator. To be honest, this thing's about the most fun I've had in this game in a long time.

Can't wait to get Blacksky Eye and all the other goodies arcane builds have access to. Not looking forward to the chalice dungeons, though.

>>
>>147280386
Grinding is done in root dungeons. You get your gem drops from bosses, and the bosses you grind depend on what build you're going for.

You need to know the glyph in order to tackle a chalice more than once, and in order to access it via glyph you need to have made a root dungeon of your own with all of the rites checked.

The typical chalices for physical builds are swjteujh and 5pwujscd, which are Ihyll and Isz respectively. As for upgrade materials, depth 5 chalice bosses drop chunks like candy, and you can use the insight gained from grinding on buying rocks from the insight bath.

You can get the rest of your info from the OP, there'll be a link to a spreadsheet in the pastebin with all your gem grinding needs.

Appreciate the help guys, thanks. Last thing though, checked OP but didn't find the answer. Once a root is done, do you just change the glyph to get a new dungeon to grind again or do you have to remove and replace?

for flatwheel, you ideally want nourishing (simply atk%+) and flat 72.5 or 67.5 depending on whether you're getting the triangles or radials

Both are good.
Get a wheel on your current character and decide which form you like better, then build around it.

>>147288476
Just use Tomb Prospector hood.
>>
>>147287732
They both have their merits. STRONK Wheel gets comical amounts of hyper armor and big smashy blunt damage, while arc Wheel gets dash attacks that hit for 600+ and hunter tools to help with zoning.

It all depends on which one you like more. Swing it around in both forms and see which one feels better.

I think the only part of this game's story that I don't get is the dream aspect. Is this all a dream? Is just Gherman's area the dream and the rest reality? I know there's some type of concise explanation as to why this can all repeat itself indefinitely through NG+ but not fully sure what it is.
>>
>>147289424
It's not a dream, just a parallel dimension called dream.
It's as real as the waking world.
>>
>>147289424
Everything is real. The dreams and shit are real places. Humans can only get to them by basically astral projecting to them though, which is why they are thought of as dreams..

Everyone else explained it perfectly, but the reason they're referred to as Dreams/Nightmares is as a reference to H.P. Lovecraft's series of stories often referred to as the 'Dream Cycle', loosely connected stories taking place within a fantastic realm inspired by the dreamlike prose of Anglo-Irish writer Lord Dunsany (I've read some of his stuff, it's not for everyone). In these Dreamlands stories, humans can access this fantastic realm via sleeping, essentially astral projecting/bilocating. Other entities, like the Ghouls, can access it by going underground.
>>
>>147289927
Fair enough. I'd heard that there's a part of the story that explains why things are back to horrible when you start a new game +.
>>
Tell me about your Fashionborne style. Do you mix and match, and why?
>>
>>147291043
All my characters wear combinations of different sets except for my str build in full executioner's.
I do it because dressing up is a fun game, both in Bloodborne and in real life.
>>
>>147291043
Mix an match always. Closest to a full set I use is cainhurst set but with the crown of illusions.
>>
>>147291043
I get the urge to mix it up every now and then, when the fancy strikes me.

Right now I'm rocking a dimensionally displaced Jack the Ripper look, Top Hat + Gascoigne's Garb + Constable Gloves + Foreigner Trousers, using the Blades of Mercy for extra effect.

But I've also gone full edgelord anime vampire hunter with Old Hunter Cap + Yharnam Hunter Garb + Old Hunter Wraps + Yharnam Hunter Trousers as well as spooky backwoods cultist with Graveguard Hood + Yahar'gul Garb + Graveguard Skirt + Madman's Manchettes.

In fact, I once wore only the Hunter Garb (with shoulder cape) and Foreigner Trousers. No hat or gloves. Look quite snazzy.

There's a window after the first bite where if you move in too soon, he'll launch into a bite combo. But if you wait just a bit after the first bite before moving back in, you won't trigger the multi-bite.

It's also probably safer to just wait for the bite combo to exhaust itself if you can't time the above, or just ignore trying to punish bites and wait for another move.

Hunter Hat + Yharnam Hunter Garb + Gascgoine's Gloves + Gascoigne's Trousers

Really liking the taped hands look. Hunter hat is pretty much the only one I like and I favour the coats in this game over the other styles. Although Knight's Garb has been on for a while.

Most of the game though has been Hunter Hat + Hunter Garb (coat, no cape) + Executioner's Gloves + Foreign Trousers

You're right, I thought you were talking about the regular top hat.
Yahar'gul helm without the hood is the best with Tomb Prospector's imo.
>>
>>147297110
It's stronger but it consumes more bullets, so it's more situational than Evelyn.
It's better for pvp and co-op, but inferior for long excursions.
>>
>>147297110
I'm pretty sure it always outclasses the Evelyn in damage, just not in bullet:damage ratio.

If you are Bone Marrow Ashing something to death (Amy for instance) it's better to use 10 BMA'd Repeater Shots than Evelyn because you want it dead quick, and with Blood Bullets every 3 shots you won't run out, and if you have seven regular bullets left you can pull out the cannon to finish whatever your fighting in an instant.. In regular gameplay it's not worth using.

First time playing, and I'm getting my shit absolutely pushed in by Vicar Amelia, lads.

Am I too underlevelled, or do I just need to git gud?
I do incredibly small damage to her, around 50 or so on every R1 attack.
Using a +3 saw cleaver.
>>
>>147298194
Your level doesn't matter, your weapon upgrades and gems do.
+3 is just not enough.
>>
>>147298194
Try and get your cleaver to +6 and put on the fire gem you can find from a zoidberg in the Cathedral Ward area.

Still, 50 damage on a saw cleaver isn't unworkable since it's a fast weapon, but unless you really learn her moveset it'll just take a while.
>>
Amy's down! Only 3 tries. Just abused the fuck out of knowing where it'll land after the jump.

>>
>>147298627

>>
>>147298627
You shouldn't have to farm if you take some detours. To the right of Amelia is a dead end with some wandering madness that drop some. To the left is Hemwick which has a few lying around as well. And if you take a detour and kill Blood Starved Beast you unlock that door to the squid that has a fire gem, but you also spawn a bunch of sackmen who rarely drop twin bloodstones, and if you let one kill you they'll take you to Yahar'ghul with a lot more (and more sack guys to farm).

I need help understanding Arcane weapons and some of the "best" choices.

Is the Saw Spear actually better than the Saw Cleaver? Because despite the slightly better arcane scaling, the higher base damage on the Cleaver seems like it will always win out. Mine are both at +6, and with 70 Arcane and the same single 21.5% fire gem Cleaver is 144 + 105 and Spear is 133 + 106. If I take the Spear to +10 will the scaling allow its combined fire damage to outpace the Cleaver? I dislike the Transformed moveset on both, so in terms of pure stats which is better?

Secondly, everyone seems to recomend Lost varients of weapons for Fire. That doesn't make sense to me at all, since Hotdog seems like the source of the best fire gems, and I don't even know how you'd get a Triangle one. As far as I know Cold Abysmalls are also radial, so still no benifit for a Triangle Slot, and it doesn't even help get Nourishing's to patch up any missing fire gems, since you can get Waning versions of them.
>>
>>147300427
You can reach the red jelly in Isz within 10 mins. It may be on layer 3 but layers 1-2 are simple. Plus no need for the bonus areas.
>>
>>147300729
It'll depend on the gems by the end. Both saws have a C Arcane scaling stat, but the spear does have a slightly better one. The base AR difference at +10 is like 10, but with a good, quality Arcane +% gem the added AR will easily overcome it.

The overall difference won't be huge though, maybe like 30 or 40 AR.
>>
>>147300887
Well either Lower Loran or Isz, whichever is easiest. I'm anxious to get the platinum so I can move on to my skill build. This one was my first and a bit of a mess.
>>
>>147300729
Saw spear has slightly less base damage but it has like an extra foot of phantom range in it's folded moveset for some reason, just go for preference since they're exactly the same otherwise
You're gonna want atleast one Arc scaling radial so by that point the scaling for both saws are evened out

As for the variants, I don't know THE best set up but mine is a radial radial triangle
2 scaling radials with counterdamage secondaries and a 27% elemental triangle from isz watchers, that bumps the elemental AR on a saw to over 600 easily

I think I know what's happening here. It's a DeS backstab, sort of.

You hit your opponent in the back on your screen, but on their screen they're mid roll by the time your attack happens. The backstab animation overrides their roll, but the i-frames from their roll prevent damage from being taken.

It worked the same way in DeS. If you landed a backstab on your screen, but your opponent was in their i-frames on their screen, then they'd get backstabbed while taking 0 damage.

Not sure if this is a graphical glitch or not, but does anybody else notice that when you're wearing the Constable Set you only get bloodsplatter on your right leg?

Jesus, that room is a deathtrap, I don't think you can get out once the teleporter pulls you in bevause of the stupid chest. I didn't even see another door.

Trying the boss now.
>>
Anyone wanna NG+ Clock and Hamlet?
>>
>>147315373
You can break those chests, it just takes a lot to do it.

I just ran the boss as well, going to restock and then start ringing on the next layer.
>>
>>147315857
Ok thanks, there's a huge room with a Bone Ash Hunter who kills me in a single hit. That's as far as I got.

I'm ringing every time I die, so you should join soon.
>>
I found the Big chest, Great Ones Wisdom, so who knows what it was.

Also got the Lever. A few unexplored rooms but I died. I'll see what the boss is.
>>
>>147316595

Amy is easier solo (unless you get outright carried), and Abhorrent can be cheesed with Poison Knives (at least up to Ailing Loran, Lower has more health and a smaller arena so I don't think it's possible).

I didn't have PS+ until after I platniumed the game, so I was forced to get good and then become a scrub once I had acsess to online play

I appreciate the offer but I kinda want the satisfaction of doing it myself, ya know?

I've been using Ludwigs Holy Blade as a Bolt weapon to be honest.

>>
>>147325354
Not him but you'll want at least another 10 points into Arcane and a couple in Vitality (should be at 40-50, 45 is where I'd stop).
>>
>>147325354
Your build isn't great.

Too much END and not enough VIT I mean, I'm currently doing FRC dungeons with 12, but I know it's never going to be viable. Also, if you plan on using Arcane spells, it's an all or nothing stat, 40 will be lack lustre 70 or 99 are the two break points in scaling.

The best way to salvage it would be a Moonlight Sword or Wheel build, otherwise you've got 30/40 points doing jack-shit on a pure Phys or a pure Arc wrap one.
>>
>>147325743
I was gonna run an arc weapon and a phys weapon, I just happen to have better bolt gems than phys gems so the holy blade became bolt

I really just wanted to try Arcane, I hate all the spells but Augur.

I've never used Kos Parasite so I wanted to try that too.
>>
>>147325808
You'll do fine with 50 Arcane since pure fire/bolt/arcane weapons gets the most out of Arcane at 50. Hunter Tools (spells) are still decent but not so much for the higher costing ones like A Call Beyond and Tonitrus. You're best use of QS bullets would come from moonbeams and Kos Parasite L2.
>>
>>147325607
Can't you backup your save, revert to a patch where you can use an exploit to gain blood echoes, make a BL 1 character, get a billion echoes, reinstall patches, create a different backup, then level up and run tests as you like?

>>147331440
Any weapon would work, as long as it's +6 or higher, but otherwise yeah, that's probably the best visceral. Maybe 99 Strength with 1 heavy would be better?
>>
>>147331595
Would have been much higher on something with lower resistances.

Or even factoring in bonus damage modifiers. Like serrated on Beasts or Holy on Cainhurst. I'm pretty sure Ludwigs Holy Blade has a ridiculous 1.5x modifier on Cainhurst enemies. You could build up Beasthood on ghosts in a crowded room and then party the last one with a max gemmed LHB.

I'm guessing the "visceral runs effects are multipled by 5" glitch on Orphan doesn't affect damage runes? Bevause that would be awesome.
>>
>>147331994
How exactly do resistances work on enemies? Is it percent damage reduction like the number you get from armor or a flat number off the top?
>>
>>147331994
>Would have been much higher on something with lower resistances.

It would have 0 difference, actually. The Tonitrus hit would have dealt a little bit more damage, but the visceral itself would have dealt identical damage to any enemy in the game. Once AR is >8x defense, it's the same as attacking something with 0 defense. So any enemy with between 0 and ~1850 defense would have taken the same 13,300 damage. Unless it had damage reduction, but I think only players and NPC hunters have damage reduction while being visceral attacked.
