Looks like either way, there isnt even a design for a ship that would fit into tier 10 naturally in the whole RN. The cruisers are interesting but the most advanced DD of RN's ww2 fleet doesnt even stack up to the tier 8s in game.

n3 at X wouldn't bother me that much along as it gets the 18in of citadel armor+belt. Also I don't know if they would dare give it 18in guns. They could also go for one of the lion upgrade/proposal/ successor projects. At 8 I'm expecting KGV. The guns aren't going to be great but the thing has tier 10 armor. Because in order to keep competitve with low armor as you keep bringing up, you would have to increase one other area of construction.

That would be the main batteries, if they could outrange and outdamage most other ships that would ever come into contact with your ship then you wouldn't really need much armor since you could just outrun your enemy's effective range and if they were able to make a hit, then you could easily do x10 their damage in return fire.

It's essentially what the soviets did during the cold war, we had better missile systems and could hit targets more accurately, so the soviets built up multiple times more nuclear missiles than us so they could at least cause mass devastation, even if it wasn't accurate

That's about the same flawed thinking that gave birth to battlecruisers. Sure, American ships had better targetting systems (though the claims of perfect pinpoint accuracy of radar-aided fire control at extreme long range during WWII is dubious). But fights never happen under perfect conditions.

Take for example the brawl between Kirishima and Washington/SoDak. Despite radar and their advantages of keeping at range, they ended up fighting at very close range. If instead of a WWI battlecruiser they had fought a more modern ship with decent guns, like Nagato, the fight wouldn't have been as one-sided as it was (tho Nagato probably still loses).

The Iowas were a flawed design as battleships, and truly had no place in anything else than carrier escort role. In a fight under standard WW2 conditions, they would have never been able to operate under the perfect conditions everyone always assume they would force the enemy to fight at (max range, shredding them with super accurate radar-guided super-heavy salvoes). They would've had to fight well inside the visual range of enemy battleships, as most non-CV encounters happened.

That's why the Montanas were planned, and cancelled once it was realized air power was superior anyway. Defending the Iowas as the perfect battleship is silly.

and I've told you how overengineered ships like Yamato fialed in their primary purpose to cause:

1. Fear, since every time a Yamato was spotted it was either sunk (Musashi, Shinano) or ran away after getting scratched (Battle of Leyte)

2. Decisive victories, Because it was never in a position to support battles it was in, or was able to actually affect the outcome of a battle.

And you can blame that partly on the commanders, but even then you can make the argument of why even build the ship class if you aren't ever going to use it?

The Iowa was successful since it completed its' roles of protecting carrier task forces, Supporting landing troops and surviving.

I don't see a floating museum for Bismarck, nor do I see one for Vittorio Veneto. Did they complete their objectives and goals? Bismarck and Tirpitz certainly inspired fear, but they didn't interdict shipping as much as the cheaper and easier to produce Uboats that were already deployed and well proven to be effective.

So unless you have an argument talking about how the Iowa failed any of their objectives or how they failed being ships I would love to hear them.

YOU were the one making the argument to cold war era tanks and they are the most equivalent. the challenger is far superior to the leopard 1 because its armor profile and armament and speed are good. Late battle ships are much more similar to MBT's than you seem to understand. They had great speed armor and guns. They are NOT supposed to engage battleships. They're NOT supposed to fight in a battle line. Otherwise they get shredded, and this was proven from time to time. Commanders put them into battle lines against battleships since they had battleship guns, and everytime they got blown the fuck out by proper battleships. See: Jutland, the sinking of the Hood.

Now, going back to Iowa, the whole "they will outrange everything, so they don't need armor" is just as flawed, because engagements rarely ever happen under ideal circumstances. Even with radar and spotters, fights in WWII always devolved into either visual-range fights or air battles. Assuming an Iowa will fight enemy battleships at ranges where they can't fight back it's wishful thinking and just hoping everything works out perfectly. Same wishful thinking as the battlecruisers with "they will just run away from the enemy battleships", which never worked out in real life.

The angle a projectile meets armor is certainly essential to the likelihood of penetration, as a projectile meeting a sloped surface would have to defeat more armor and expel some of it's energy unevenly across the projectile mass when attempting to penetrate compared to an impact against a flat surface. For a simplistic and readily observable demonstration I suggest you look at the design of German and American tank hulls both before and during the Second World War. You will notice a trend of flat surfaces on the front of the hull that could be easily targeted being replaced by smoothly angled armor with little to no surfaces that could be made to catch projectiles better than the surrounding area. They didn't do this for aesthetic purposes, adding slope to hull armor contributed to making it more effective and they came to understand this.

The U.S. is also using a kinetic penetratior and not a HEAT projectile for it's anti-armor work and the former Soviet Union and current Russian Federation spent or is spending most of it's research on composites and ERA specifically trying to defeat kinetic penetrators. So HEAT isn't the only main threat to armor where modern MBTs are concerned.

I can't mathematically prove the principles of physics exists without looking it up, and most likely neither can you, but we proceed under the assumption that it is true because accredited individuals have done the math to prove it.

Even if I can't provide mathematical proof, the writings and calculations of an accredited and published member of a naval warfare journal are not invalidated, in the same way Isaac Newton's principles of physics aren't disproven if a single adherent cannot prove it mathematically.

it isn't going to be working thourgh more material if the composite layer relys on having more material in its immediate vicinity to be effective. by making it blocky you can get more effective layers supporting each other or you can add a better heavy backing layer of something like DU. more angle just means you have less armor fully engaging the projectile to greatest effect. Remember to understand the internal of the armor not just the length one side to the other. The only reason angling is used these days are on parts that have no composite or when there is major need to save weight on a less essential armor component.

The German concept resulted in what was essentialy a lighter armed but faster wing of the line of battle.

I think it's not unreasonable to assume that German designers would have arrived at the same conclusions their Japanese counterparts arrived at in the 1920s, with designs for battleships and battlecruisers (or in this case, large cruisers) converging into a fast battleship.

The naval treaties caused this development to be delayed by twenty years, of course, but the conceptual designs that were drawn up during WW1 and ended up being cancelled when that war ended, or due to the naval treaties, clearly showed that trend.

Italian DDs look pretty boring unless they have USN-rof popguns. Apart from Navigatori-class they all exactly 4 guns and 6 torpedo tubes.

I run premium damage control on everything I own above T7, and the premium heal pot on all of my premium BBs + Hotel and I can still make money. And the premium camo on the Tirpitz is free, just like with every premium ship.
