Definitely expect casualties, but also know that near flawless missions are possible. If you really nail the game down you can clear most routine ufo sweeps with 0-2 casualties regularly. Don't forget to abuse smoke, it shortens/blocks LOS, so you can literally BREAK LOS on demand. This is insanely powerful because if the aliens don't see you on their turn the can't activate their kill switch and continue to use their patrol AI that just makes them wander around the map mostly aimlessly always ending their turn with approximately half their time units (for reaction fire).

First month you always bring 100% rookies unless it's a council mission, goal is to get as many people as possible to spec. Then next month goal is to produce as many LCPLs as possible. You don't want to dump all your xp in the same ten people, it has to be spread out as much as possible.

After the first months lowranks are mostly to be trained on downed scouts and even then not in full teams of lowranks but rather as 1-3 extra soldiers to a normal team (with the core maybe even slightly stronger than a normal team). Some other missions also work with 1 lowrank soldiers but it's based on your preference and risk tolerance.

As an addendum I find eggsalt slaughter missions a good newbie training ground midgame because two CCS assaults can guarantee mission victory; I add one or two other guys for damage and then 2-3 newbies with AP grenades who will just farm kills. There's always risk when bringing newbies though.

Repair Bay is cheap and fast. Mandatory too, if you didn't disable repairs.

OTS and Foundry are things you want to get up as fast as possible. You'll need power though, so while building one, beeline for the nearest steam vent and start building a thermal(or if it's some really shitty positions, make a temporary regular power building on the path to the thermal).

That sounds like a restart-tier layout

You can't make a decent power block, and attempting to use the thermals only serves to screw over future building blocks. Not to mention that getting things up will take a seriously long time in either case. I don't know what else to say mate, besides hit the new game button

My personal suggestion for making sure you don't get fucked over by steam layouts in the future: go to the DCG ini file, ctrl+f steam(or something like that), find the line which dictates the number of steam vents, and set it to 5. Once you're past mission one and get to the base, pick the two best steam vents and pretend the other three do not exist. Assuming you can manage that measure of control, you can more or less pick yourself a decent steam layout

Armor is a very special case. IIRC sectoids have a miniscule chance of oneshotting a 7-hp soldier and no chance of oneshotting an 8-hp one (depends on difficulty). Since you can achieve both of these values without armor tech you can delay it a bit at no penalty. Personally I do xenobio -> materials -> fragments -> laser. Xenobio must always be your first tech because it unlocks corpse requests, materials second is kinda rare but I like it because it unlocks other requests and gives me alloy plates early.

You can continue even if you lose the base defense actually, which is a godsend since the aliens can send as many as they want

Don't underestimate them though, since the aliens get free resources and research for each county they take it's very easy to get a snowballing situation where their airgame is untouchable and they field an army for every mission while you can't even afford your upkeep. Plus once you can't threaten them anymore they will just take one country per month regardless of panic.

They have weight and space constraints, this big robot can act as a MEC-like tank and use heavy weapons while also being capable of doing other things while on mission if necessary. If they take a robot that can only shoot it means they've got one less guy able to do anything else thats required.

Nah man. Anarchy's Children just makes all your soldiers look like Mad Max rejects when you upgrade armor tiers and Alien Hunters adds three enemies that break the game mechanics and isn't canon anyway. It's honestly not much fun fighting a Berserker, Archon, or Viper that can perform an action EVERY TIME you perform an action. Reload? They shoot you. Move to flank the enemy? They move to distant heavy cover. Alien hunters would be awesome if it weren't for that stupid gameplay mechanic. I turned it off because I don't like fighting the ruler aliens and I also don't think the unique weapons you get in the DLC fit with the rest of the game. They look out of place, wooden, and weird.

The problem is with the game unloading all my in-game bindings when I haven't launched the game yet. Not just that, but unbinding my fucking backups is inexcusable. That is shitty programming.

That is a problem with the game and Firaxis, not the mods you mouthbreather.

there is a chance that the game didn't overwrote the file and you can try to import them again
but all of that could have been avoided if you had checked those where loaded properly

Break LOS with smoke grenades.
On the first turn, don't leave the skyrange, instead smoke that ramp. The reason why is the aliens have 100% reactions and will kill your troops upon exiting. This is null if you can see an ayy and they are close, then try to shoot them and then smoke
You need more then one base
Rush laser weapons
Avoid night missions when you can, bring flairs when you can't
Expect casualties
Buy and bring plenty of explosives (Including HE bricks, I think just called HE in the market)
