As I was saying, not much progress for the last month.

Finally joined the hull and superstructure and got a working idea on what kind of base I want. Got the main block from a Hasegawa 1/700 Myoko kit and cut the resting strands to size from a longer basswood strip I got from a crafts store. I like the drydock-reminiscent look. I'll barnish the whole base once I glue the resting strips, but first I need to get more base blocks for future projects.

I've been considering getting a Mutsu next but appearance-vise she's quite close to Kongou and Yamashiro so maybe I'll get a Yamato or some heavy cruiser. And yes, they're all Fujimi 1/700s. The wiring is stretched sprue on the Kongou and Atago. On the Yamashiro I actually used strains of hair (except for the crane and the sides of the pagoda), it's a lot more forgiving than stretched sprue which just snaps if you touch it. Some photoetch would make it look better though.

well I don't know about the German 38cm's, but I remember reading about a test done with the Musashi's 46cm's with some small animals kept on deck, and I dare say there's a good reason they didn't have people manning the exposed guns while firing, which is why the Yamatos got the enclosed AA guns everywhere.

Cleveland, Budyonny, Myoko, Molotov, in no particular order. Haven't played the nazis though.

Cleveland and Budy are both nice firespam ships with fast guns. Budy is faster, has torpedoes (though they're honestly pretty weak), and its shells fly faster. Cleveland has an extra turret and excellent AA.

Myoko is just an all-round excellent ship. Powerful guns with excellent HE, plus some good torps. Just don't show too much of your broadside or you won't live long enough to regret it.

Molotov is great for its unique and balanced )))) ability to citadel almost any cruiser at tier and above from near maximum range because of its amazing shell velocity and AP performance.

When you fire broadside, it is mostly when you're either long range or "brawling" or are there other circumstances where you can afford to do it without taking too much risk getting assraped?

If you show broadside to a battleship at any range assume you will take an assload of damage. There's a forum post detailing how damage is done, I highly recommend finding and reading it.

Past 10km-ish you can chance showing broadside to cruisers but I still recommend staying angled at all times.

The only times you want to show broadside to fire all guns is when you know for a fact that the only ships that can shoot you are otherwise preoccupied. You can also meme behind islands and fire over them, staying unspotted so long as there isn't a destroyer or aircraft around you. This is difficult to set up but highly rewarding.

Constantly use your rudder to throw off torpedoes - but you will still get torped, don't get angry about this.

If you're on NA hit up the /vg/ chat in the OP, I'm sure one of us wouldn't mind divving with you in low tiers

You should keep angled as much as possible to minimize target profile and get the most out of your armor.

At long range you might be able to get away with it if no one is looking at you, but generally it's safer to angle. At close to medium range showing broadside is an invitation for you to get assraped.

You're going to shoot all your guns most of the time if your boat has decent turret angles that allow you to shoot them while still keeping an angle not greater than 30°between your bearing and enemy position.
The value of the angle which you can safely keep depends on your armour and who's shooting you, generally you should always show the least amount of your broadside that allows you to shoot most of your guns.
Many ships have at least a turret that has a shit angle, which you shouldn't fire unless you are sure nobody is going to shoot back with something that hurts.
The times where you should really prioritize survival over firepower, therefore facing the enemy with either bow or stern, are generally when BBs are shooting you at medium to close range, when there are DDs near ready to torp the shit out of you and when there are equal or greater tier CAs at close distance focused on you.
However in this latter case, you should pay close attention whether or not the enemy CA has torps.
Getting too close might result in even more catastrophic epilogues.
