DOMINIONS IS DEAD, LONG LIVE DOMINIONS edition

Previous Pantokrator >>146526389

Dominions is a fantasy turn-based strategy game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a strategy game.

I've been thinking about my own take on a memegame once my current games list gets some extra room.

How about 6 players on a 66 province map, 20 T1 thrones, 20 T2 thrones, 20 T3 thrones, Indy Difficulty: 9. Maybe even throw in a Starting Provinces: 2 or 3 to spice it up.

How terrible of an idea would this be? How about if I made a custom Oneage mod to get rid of the most powerful/popular nations so people had to go with other options?
>>
>>146603775
YES to step on Snake

Also, need subs for Flatus Mictlan, Patala, and C'tis it seems. Come join me, Lambert, and whoever Xibalba is on our journey to the end of the world.

I, Lemuria, shall be you driver.

>>146607918
Awful

But all memegames are awful. If you run it, they will come.
>>
>>146608094

>How about 6 players on a 66 province map, 20 T1 thrones, 20 T2 thrones, 20 T3 thrones, Indy Difficulty: 9.

How about indy difficulty 0-2 instead? Thrones for everyone working as normal provinces.
>>
>>146609105
That may actually be a better idea than the "aggressively fuck over the players" kinda thing I was thinking.
>>
>>146607918

After playing CoE4 a bit I'm starting to want some of the mechanics from it in Dom4, like the different resource types and more mages that cast multiple spells at once
Both Dom4 and CoE4 could use a healthy dose of quality of life improvements in some areas though
>>
>>146613089
Dominions 4 getting a way to have you spellcasters cast multiple spells in a turn (especially if it doesn't take up item slots), no matter how difficult, would radically transform the game because it would make supercasters (or one mage + supercombatant) viable.
>>
>>146586213
>One of those attacks is a lance.
That's wrong. Eagle warriors just have a standard spear, not a light lance.
>>
>>146613562
incorrect, check the dom4 inspector, they recently got a Bronze Lance. I thought you were right till I checked myself
>>
>>146613667
Shit, that's actually a pretty important change. +4 damage on the first attack is a big deal with how numerous and expendable eagle warriors are. I'm surprised nobody mentioned it.

I suppose MA Mictlan needed a buff, but the issue was/is their mages not eagle warriors.
>>
>>146613318
That's a change I can get behind given how mage pretenders have been left in the dust compared to other pretender choices.
Also, some way to diversify the endgame so that it isn't BLOODBLOODBLOOD
>>
So what should you be aiming for in the end/late game? I feel like I shouldn't still be rolling with more magic and less armies but armies seem to still be the most effective way of demolishing enemy armies and PD.
>>
>>146614427

>>146614427
Important army buffs like army of lead/gold, fog warriors, antimagic, all that stuff
Access to as many schools of magic as possible, preferably blood in lategame since demons fuck over everything else and blood scales up better than gem based magic
Tarts with gift of health if you can get them, they're basically the best non blood summon
Having some mobile thugs for PD clearing or fast throne capping would also be ideal, but there's quite a lot of ways to do that easily

I mean, there are a fair few 'kill the enemy army spells' - RoS is the famous one, but WoD is often better. Then there's the massive AoE evos, wrathful skies, firestorm, etc. Your ideal army can field all the ones that you can protect yourself against and then also field some sort of protection against that of the bad guys
>>
>>146617718
I would help, but I'd rather watch anime
>>
>>146616742
I would be worried about the bigger guy using the time you spend doing that to advance extremely rapidly using thugs/SCs against your weakly defended provinces. If the smaller guy is smart he'll turtle up as soon as you focus on him and make pushing into his lands take as long as possible.

There's also a diplomatic perspective to consider. Wiping out a small nation looks a lot less friendly than valiantly defending against a larger one, even if the small nation started the fight.

Ideally, I think I'd want to try make the smaller player back out of the fight. Make the war hurt for him but don't actively try to conquer his provinces. Just raid and/or cast cancer rituals all over them, and make sure he knows that the pain can stop as soon as he stops supporting the bigger player. That should be a lot cheaper than trying to kill him, and less likely to cause diplomatic problems.

At the same time try to make an alliance against the bigger player. Even if you think you can take him solo, more allies is always helpful and will take some of the pressure off you. Odds are his neighbors will take a slice if you beat him anyway, so you may as well try to get them to do some of the work.

Obviously all this will depend on what you've actually got available, what your two enemy nations have, and the diplomatic state of the game, but I hope I've made the reasoning clear.
>>
>>146617718
As a doctrine, I generally focus firepower on my more vulnerable enemies first. I've won two games using this philosophy of growing larger to break a stalemate

it might be pretty hard to start; you might be forced to manually set provinces as possible capital start or throne start, otherwise the game might start with not enough capital starting point due to them being occupied by thrones and it might end up crashing.

test it several times ins ingle player first.

>>
>>146642837
>i am not fast enough to capture them all
It is extremely rare for someone to not accept another player taking everything in their cap circle unless they are planning on killing them very soon or share a cap circle with them (in which case they are also planning on killing them very soon).
>>
>>146642837
Every nation can expand acceptably with national troops. Many nations get better expansion with some blesses over others or benefit more from an awake expander to help get rolling more quickly, but -every- nation can expand well with a good start, and what you're describing is a GREAT start.
>>
Any open MPs or can anybody tell me where's the best place for a newbie like me to find some ?
>>
>>146642837
>I'm not fast enough to capture them all
Unless it's a throne or really nasty province (which other players aren't going to be able to easily take either), that means you're doing expansion horribly wrong.

You can't take 6 provinces in a year with an amazing start to help you out?

Also this >>146642917. You shouldn't assume your capcircle is inviolable, but most players will give you plenty of time to take it and will give it back if they accidentally move into it.

Holding onto another player's capcircle usually means you're soon going to be at war with them, because it's a very large risk for someone to let you keep it. UW-land borders are an exception, of course.

>also one of the capcircle province is screaming " PUT A CASTLE ON ME".
Not really a problem unless you have extremely resource-heavy cap-only units.

A fort adjacent to your capital reduces the resources your capital gets, but makes it much harder to safely siege.
>>
>>146643628
You can't take 6 provinces in a year with an amazing start to help you out?

i can, although my armies need reinforcement often. but i also plan to reach chokepoints, get sweet farms , encircle provinces so i can take them later and having many provinces i have to get with high priority forces me to do some unhealthy choices.
i can totally see 2 provinces i absolutely need to put a fort on being so nicely positioned that i can't hope for them to be still free by turn 8. it's a bit awkward.
>>
>>146643019
Try expanding as EA Kailasa or LA Mari
>>
>>146644598
I've done Kailasa with an N9 monobless. It's honestly just gimped by the generals being StR, which summod fixes. In vanilla, I've had some success with expansion parties led using a yogi + an indy priest, but that requires setting up a temple within a turn of your cap and it's still hella awkward.
>>
>>146644598
Also, I've never actually played LA Mari but don't you just do like scales MA TC and expand with an infantry line, and bows (well, crossbows in Mari's case) + an archer lure when appropriate?
>>
>>146644267
I don't really think that's a good idea.

It sounds like you'll need to continually reinforce your expansion parties as they move towards the chokepoints, which means a lot of wasted turns just ferrying troops.

If you try to expand in a more circular pattern you can easily fold old expansion parties into new ones as needed, and quickly return any empty leaders back to the capital.

Of course, I've never liked going for chokepoints or trying to encircle territory. I feel it tends to bring a bit too much heat from other players when you block them from expansion, and there's a big risk that someone gets there first and screws up your expansion.

>>146644598
>EA Kailasa
I've tried it, it's not that awful. Falcion Yavana with a decent bless are very good against melee threats. Don't throw them at archers and you should have a decent time.

Now if only they weren't magic beings so I could lead them with indie commanders...

On the scales side, you have Bandar Warriors (which I haven't tried , but have been told they work great)

>>146645142
MA TC gets 9r pikes and 11r tower shields. Makes the frontline cost much fewer resources than the 20r pikes from LA Mari.

TC also gets composite bow troops (12r) which are better against most types of indies (in my opinion) than Mari's crossbow troops (10r).

I also think MA indies are generally easier than LA. Less heavy armor.
>>
>>146645142
It's more the fact their starting army is garbage militia than that.
>>
>>146645606
>I've tried it, it's not that awful. Falcion Yavana with a decent bless are very good against melee threats. Don't throw them at archers and you should have a decent time.
Yeah, that's what I did. I also typically had a few random crap units under the priest while the yogi led the sacreds. If no archers, the crap units sit in the back. If there are, they become an arrow screen / lure. Worked fine.

Yeah, I can see how it would be worse and how they might really need a scales snake to help ensure that they get resources early. It just doesn't seem particularly complicated or tricky to expand with the way that Kailasa is (which, again, is actually pretty okay. It's just not at all intuitive to use a cheap mage + an indy priest).
>>
>>146646183
>It just doesn't seem particularly complicated or tricky to expand with the way that Kailasa is
LA Marignon is tricky because their expansion is extremely bad.

Most nations can live with completely losing an expansion party or two stupidly and still get a decent expansion. (From my limited experience practicing with them) LA Marignon starts having trouble if you take significant losses at anytime during expansion, let alone actually losing a party.

To make up for it you need to know basically all the scripting tricks (arrow decoys, etc), need to know the details of indie provinces inside out (so you can make your troops get first hit in melee clashes) and need to know which provinces you can take with minimal losses.

By comparison Kailasa is dead easy. Once you know to avoid archers and use blessed Yanava it's about as complicated as other nations (even if it takes more gold and recruitment slots).

With LA Marignon you need to be getting the absolute most out of your troops in each fight and that means rescripting based on which province you'll move into next turn. Or you can take an earth snake, which most people do.

I know of a few games, but most are using unusual mods/settings. Vegetable Warriors 5 (modnations game, might not start due to lack of players), ChaosHander (itemunits game), MonsterMashMadness (I can't remember). Might have missed some.

I could just host a standard game with only worthy heroes. There seems to be interest.

EA would be my preference, but if people want MA or LA that's cool too.
>>

>>146650572

Heroes are random units who have a chance of appearing at your capital every turn. Each nation gets some, but a lot of the vanilla ones are shit.

Worthy heroes improves (and in a few cases, adds) heroes so that every nation has interesting heroes with actual uses.

It has little effect on gameplay and is generally regarded as a straight improvement over vanilla.

I'm a bit slow, but here's the game. Should be standard settings, if I've missed something tell me.

Please mention here that you've joined and which nation you chose when signing up.

I'll also make a thread on the steamgroup. Posting there will not be required to join, but it will make it easier for other players to contact you outside of game. Mostly it's just so people know who I am and can contact me on steam if desired.

I've changed score graphs.

Story events are fine.

>>146656019
Some are a bit OP against the player given certain situations. Or conversely too rewarding.

They are fine imo and make the game a little more interesting.
>>
>>146656019
Last time I tried them was a few patches ago, but they tended to be buggy and often a lot more influential than normal events.

>EA Caelum

S3-5 pretender for my summons, D3F1 for my other summons, S D F for all those summons or gayrainbow sitesearcher pretender?

what do you suggest? the rainbow idea would be dormant, the other ones probably imprisoned ( but then how the hell would i get S gems?)
>>
>>146668436
Caelum doesn't really need anything aside from good scales and a pretender that can summon the national summons (since they give you complete diversity anyway).
I believe you can get away with just DF as a minimum since there's a DF summon with S3 on it, but that might take a lot of summoning or an empower to progress to S5.
>>
>>146668436

Only need scales and DF. Yatas can be S3, can craft a hat, and can summon Celestial Yazads, one of which is S4, another has ES and can craft a coin to boost your S3 to S5.

If you really really wanna bless, there are probably worse things than a D9f4 demilich.

The latest versions aren't cracked and the game is too niche for anyone to get on it.

I think there's a pirate version available somewhere, but it's out of date, missing a lot of content and won't work with multiplayer.

>>146670397
technically there is a pirated outdated version, but if you wanna try what the game looks like you can download the demo of dominion 3. dominion 4 is just a good upgrade to it( i think the demo also has far less nations and content) but the concept is the same.
http://www.illwinter.com/dom3/

if you wanna play multiplayer, which is the real deal with dominions, you are forced to buy ( or do an hotseat with the demo). we had few months were the pirate version was up to date and up to one player /game could have been a pirate, but Illwinter DRM tactics are doing a good work.

Its coastal mages are decent but expensive. Unlike EA Marverni, they don't have 45g s1 mages to support the druids or boars to make a free sacred front line. Their cap stuff is great, but big air is better when you have other air mages too. I can see them being good when they get fog warriors and stuff up to work with their earth/astral land stuff, but that's relatively late for a nation that has mediocre research.
>>

Geomancers are 65 gold.
Druids are 165 gold.

Still, those guys + caponly A4 make a pretty decent combination. Above water they are definitely one of the better water nations in the game. That's still not much.

I want to start Formoria.

Is the hooded teleporting pretender with 4W 4N 4E scales: 30 1P 3G dormant dominion 6 a decent pretender build? The bless seems alright for the sacred umarked and giants and it also helps them expand into those paths (earth water nature) that they aren't very strong in.

Criticism?

Pure N9 can do wonders. You can thug exclisively with your druids.
>>
>>146703194
It's not the worst thing I've seen, but the W4 and N4 will be largely negligible on your sacreds. Personally I prefer an imprisoned N9 with more scales, since as >>146703423 said it makes druid thugging safer.
>>
>>146703194
Seems fine to me if you don't want an N9 bless for thugging. Thematically cool pretenders are more fun anyway.

From what I can see the more experienced players are avoiding strong nations.

I sure hope you mean Nemedians
>>
>>146735072
Nemedians are great because of glamor, but if you look at their stats firbolg are almost as good and cost half as much.

Personally I ran N9 and ran mixed sacreds with fomorians to get 2/square
>>
So tell me, would I be able to construct a twisted, corrupt, rotting from the inside out, god-empire?
>>
>>146735856
Nemedians have much better equipment, which makes a big difference.

Comparing Nemedians to the spear fir bolg - their damage is 17 compared to 13, and their attack skill is 15 compared to 12.

Glamor combined with high defense is amazing against indies too. A group of nemedians can easily outperform double their number in fir bolg.

>>146737408
I don't think so.

That sounds more like an EU/Stellaris/CK thing.
>>
>>146737767
That's all true, but I found that in the square-filler role with Unmarked, Nemedians had only marginally lower attrition for a much higher cost.

To be clear, I love Nemedians for all their secondary characteristics - magic weapons, high MR, darkvision, high morale - and they're amazing once you start casting spells. They hit right through stygian rains with their magic weapons so you can use that, their stats become godlike against non-darkvision opponents when that's down, etc. It's only in expansion and with giants doing the heavy lifting that I'd say that fomorians are the better unit to recruit. If you can afford the gold increase, sure get Nemedians so that you'll have more of them later, but I prefered getting my palisades, labs, and temples down sooner to the slightly higher Nemedians numbers before I had the magic to get the most out of them
>>
>>146738641
that firbolg* are better to recruit, I mean.
>>
>>146737408
Sorta. If you run crap dominion, then your lands are filled with turmoil, upheaval, unrest, scorching or freezing seasons, misfortune, magic draining from the lands, and literal death and plague. Most empires try to avoid doing so.
>>
>>146738820
>>146737767

>>146738641
When you said
>firbolgs are great at expanding
I'm fairly sure the guy replying assumed you were using armies of fir bolg, in which case nemedians would work way better for the same amount of resources.

Blessed Unmarked are fine too, but in that case the fir bolg are mostly redundant. I'd expect good expansion results from Unmarked even without square fillers.

>>146739836
Well, if you select the right scales (sloth plus turmoil?) that is happening, you just don't see it.

As a pretender god you don't really care how the lords of each province rule over it, just that they send you gold and soldiers, so the actual effects of scales are abstracted away.

All you'll see is less income, troops taking longer to recruit, and maybe the occasional event related to it. In certain situations you might need to send troops to a province and have them restore order as well.
>>
>>146739836
You don't build your own nation in this game. You pick one, and it comes with its own unit lineup.

she's pretty fookin' evil anon. She committed what's probably the biggest mass murder in the history of the Thronesverse to avoid punishment for a whole bunch of other murders and conspiracies. And this wasn't even a war situation like The Red Wedding which was arguably justified, at least from the Frey/Lannister POV. Cersei murdered a whole shitload of innocents for purely selfish reasons. And now just if it wasn't clear enough she dresses in black and chains to show everyone how hardcore she is.

>>146749651
Doesn't the left side of the field always get to move first unless the right side units move into them first?
>>
>>146749651
I wish I knew. As far as I can tell, it's the unit ID. Unit ID is incremented in the order in which the troops were originally recruited, but when a unit dies its ID is reused. Since unit ID is also used among all nations in a game, the low unit ID from some guy that died in another nation might go to a guy you recruit and vice-versa.

I know that's how it works for commanders, and the little testing that I've done with mixed squads shows similar results.

I agree with most things you've said, though I'm be so sure about her motivations being 100% selfish. It's quite obvious that one of, if not *the* most important reason for doing things she did was her conviction that she's the only person able to protect Tommen.
Also, I'm pretty sure The Red Wedding is still the biggest mass-murder, considering the fact that many of Starks' soldiers outside the castle were killed as well.

you just want to take a quick look at what kind of units and what kind of magic your neighbour has and in 2 minutes of checking you'll know what kind of war you are getting into when dealing with him.

What do your expansion parties look like for EA C'tis?

Also, how does one use chariots to expand with Arco/C'tis? Is there some trick to lure enemies into them to get first hit with a rule of thumb to make sure you have critical mass or something? They've always suffered at least some losses when I've used them, so I tend to default to just using myrms to expand with arco
>>
Beginner here, how much Dominion are you supposed to generally take?

And how many points in your pretender's magic path of choice? Is it ever worth getting 9-10?
>>
>>146777869
I expand with Wind Riders and pelasts and Cardaces with Arco. Never even tried using Chariots (or myrms for that matter). My expansion parties evolve through the first few turns so it's hard to recommend exactly what to recruit. I start by recruiting as many Wind Riders as I can and fill out the rest with pelasts. So the expansion party I send out turn 2 is usually 2 riders, starting army + 6 or so pelasts, and priestess to bless riders. Cardaces in a line in front, pelasts behind, riders hold and attack rear, priestess casts blessing, sermon of courage x2.

Generally I'll max out recruitment of riders and fill in the rest with pelasts. I always default to pelasts because all I care about in the early game is weight of numbers, not quality. After recruiting maybe a pair of mystics with maybe a mage engineer for site searching, I recruit a Wind Lord to prophet, and send him out with the previous few turns of riders to expand.
>>
>>146778275
6 is considered a "safe" number if you don't have special dominion abilities (like freespawn) or strong sacreds (their recruitment is limited to domnumber per turn

Magic paths also give your sacreds different blesses (4 gives a minor one, 9 a major one), so for some nations it's certainly worth it. Bless doesn't increase or decrease in power with gaining/losing paths in-game, so only starting paths matter for it.

Also, read the manual.
>>
>>146778275
Dominion is used for three things: determining how many sacred units you can recruit, spreading your scales, and keeping from losing due to having no dominion. 6 is a pretty good baseline, increase if you have very good scales or sacred units you want to recruit lots of. Generally people only take 9 or 10 if they really need the awe on their pretender chassis
>>
>>146777869
Falchioneers and some arrow bait/first hit takers

Whether chariots are going to be useful or not depends on how well you can position them, which also depends on how well you know the relative position of indie units. Chariots are risky, as you can tell, unless you're hinnom in which case their chariots tend to murder shit due to being size 5 with 24 hp
>>
>>146778692

If you're going for babby's first pretender with Marverni, take an awake E6 Earth Snake with Growth 3 , dom6 and whateve other positive scales you want and run the snek into indies (that aren't undead) to make your expansion not-terrible. Earth Snakes are fairly useless compared to other pretenders later on, but they're simple to use and effective for what they cost.
>>
>>146779764
Scales are those little symbols below your pretender that affect your territory, they let you make more forts, units, and mages, they're called this because in previous games they were symbols on little scales, showing the balance between positive and negative.
>>
>>146780059
They're actually still there in province info.

It would be nice if they made a comeback in pretender design screen as well, though.
>>
>>146779764
"Scales" are order, production, heat/cold etc. When you "go full scales" you mostly increase economical benefits for your nation (production gives more resources, order more gold etc).

It's trash because it was build by a new player that doesn't know what he's doing, the pretender chassis (the dude in cape) itself is pretty good.

You might want having more scales that give you money like growth and order because you will need to recruit a lot of mages and they're not cheap, and maybe lowering production to sloth 1-2-3 or so because you don't have strong recruitable units anyway.

Magic paths can be different. N9 is the easiest choice on almost any chassis. It gives your blessed sacred guys regeneration (10% hp restoration each round). W4 just gives +2 defence, which is okay. E4 is a good bless for mages as it gives reinvigoration (fatigue restoration each turn), but not as useful for regular troops.

You also need to decide what your pretender is going to do in the game. If he's awake, he's either going to attack independent provinces alone (Earth Serpent with E4-6 is good for noobs), search for magic sites and research ("rainbow" pretenders with many cheap magic paths like archmage), or just wait for its turn to awaken (Imprisoned pretenders with heavy blesses like N9B9 or something).
>>
>>146778856
>depends on how well you can position them, which also depends on how well you know the relative position of indie units
That's literally what I'm asking about. Is there an easy way to figure out where I should place my lads and how many I need?

>>146778658
>I expand with Wind Riders and pelasts and Cardaces with Arco.

I assume you take a bless for them then? I'm also not sure why you'd ever take Cardaces since they lose the jav attack and have only 4 more prot

I used myrms because they can just walk at indies and kill them. I switched production over to Peltasts for when I think javs are useful and otherwise use myrms for my lineholders too. I also used mostly ics for backline diving/strategic mobility/raiding rather than wind riders since I didn't take a bless. I have only blitz experience with arco, though.
>>
>>146779913
>Marverni without B9

Why even bother? Blood on your pretender makes your boars go from borderline useless to requiring specific counters.

Also Marverni can expand fine with or without a bless. Their heavy infantry has no problems with EA provinces, where heavy cav and crossbows are rare.
>>
>>146780653
>Is there an easy way to figure out where I should place my lads and how many I need?
No
You can try and use decoy squads but I find that it isn't consistent from province to province.
>>
>>146780923
Oh, nvm, this is a brand new player. Earth snake is fine. He should still be able to expand with his national units too, though.

Also @ newbro - Magic is actually decent for Marverni because you have 45 gold S1 mages. For general reference, Magic scales well with lots of cheap mages, since it raises their low research levels (7->10, in this case). It also reduces MR in your dominion and reduces fatigue casting, both of which are also nice when you have lots of astral mages.
>>
>>146778275
>And how many points in your pretender's magic path of choice? Is it ever worth getting 9-10?

you take 9 for major blesses.
speaking of taking high magical scales with your pretender when you don't care about blesses at all.... there are basically only 2 reasons you may want it:
-being able to cast a certain global spell/summon, as soon as you can or eventually lategame. you need to look it up and know it beforehand
-taking advantage one specific scaling summon spells. this is niche and you need to know the spell beforehand.

for example earth magic has a global spell at Earth 6 and some at earth 5 but nothing above that and since you can also craft booster items there is no encouragement to take more than earth 5, or earth 4 if you don't care about that first global but just want the other ones.

meanwhile if you want to cast utterdark you better take death 7 on your pretender, eventually more if he doesn't have item slots for the boosters.

I really like taking an imprisoned nopath pretender for Marverni, and just take maximum scales and as much dominion as possible.

Marverni really suit a Guns and Butter, fortress/temple in every province, human wave style of play. Their mages are very cheap and communionable. They don't rely on capital mages, and even if an army is destroyed you can usually compose a new effective fighting force out of the leftovers.

As Anonymous suggested though, they are quite weak to expand with. You should practice this bit carefully and be very aware of what kind of indies you can kill and which you cant.
>>
>>146781354
>s Anonymous suggested though, they are quite weak to expand with
This is wrong, Marverni units expand fine with either prod 3 or a bless.

>>
>>146781643
While I dislike his pretender for, well, a couple reasons, if your cap is being breached the fact that your pretender can be killed more easily by a specific counter is honestly not a concern
>>
>>146781738
"more easily", and "by an S1 mage with a single pearl" is night and day, dude.
>>
>>146781879
When your cap is being breached, you're fucked anyways. It literally doesn't affect your chances of winning a game
>>
>>146781879
>>146781738

You literally don't care if it dies. It's got E1/S1/N1, which is the same as your recruit anywhere mages. It's only purpose is to give scales and dominion.

People in this thread pattern match S1 -> bad too much. It's a massive vulnerability in a thug or a key mage, but it really doesn't matter in other circumstances.
>>
>>146782058
dude, if my cap is being breached and I have a tree, I fucking WRECK the opposing army and just do other stuff with my main forces, like breaching opponent's cap with a retarded S1 pretender.
>>
>>146782058
Also, Marverni is nigh-immune to magic duel, because if your hordes of S1 mages are in front of your pretender, they'll be targeted first anyways. If your opponent is anyone other than Sauromatia, then YOU are the one who magic duels and if it is Sauro then neither of you are going to spend the pearls trying to clear out the enemy hordes (unless your opponent brought relatively few soothsayers and a dickload of enaries for you to duel)
>>
>>146781879
Unless the enemy has S1 assassins and you leave the pretender alone in the capital, you've effectively lost by the time he's been "easily killed". And anyway, with a design like that, the pretender being killed loses you 3 temple checks and 11rp so not exactly a big deal.
>>
>>146782152
>my cap is being breached with a full scales build and I can still breach the enemy's capital

This doesn't happen
>>
You know what, you stupid fucks? You just literally never do a no paths pretender. Never. They never won games, I'm 99% sure of it. You just take a E4, or E9 or N9 or something else good.
>>
>>146782490
I agree with this. I dislike his no-paths pretender because I think Marverni does better with B9 or other magic on their pretender. The S1 doom-mongering is the retarded part, and what other people were responding to because it's a bad argument.

>>
>>146782490

Nah, I've wrecked with that pretender build a couple of times. I always had my opponents on the back foot because even if they killed an army and 50 mages I had another one right behind.

A small bless doesn't really get you anything. Regeneration / reinvigoration is nice for your mages, but you can get the same effect using personal buffs in a communion.

The boars need an expensive bless to be effective. That's a fine way to play Marverni too, but it's a totally different strategy.

>>146782828

Monolith is the cheapest 4 dominion pretender for Marverni. It means you can get 1 more scale than Fountain of Blood or the Oracle. If you pretender has no value as a chassis but is only good for scales that is the obvious pick.

Not really. Even a full scales build uses them as chaff. A B9 build just invests more into them because it turns them into much better chaff
>>
>>146783619
>dom 8

yeah, I guess it might be a bit high now since the changes to how dominion spread is calculated. I stand by the scales though - the goal is to maximize income. Marverni really has no problem with research given their 45g mages.
>>
>>146783593
Or Beast Mastery
>>
>>146783813
Yep, that one's especially good since a nation like Pan or Ur can reasonably spam it.

I've anecdotally only ever had WoD used as a counter to them, though, so I'm not sure what sort of prep would work well against late game Pan/Ur/whatever.

A B9 build is cheap enough that you still get rather good scales, and there are other fringe benefits of having blood on your pretender like Bloodstones, so you're not totally screwed by your pretender choice. It's more about giving you another tool that's very good against many enemies throughout the game. It isn't the sole focus of your strategy.
>>
B9 on Marverni is extremely good, I can confirm. You just need moneys for your gifts from heaven communion mages, and boars will be effective almost forever if you know how to pick your battles/counterthug.
>>
>>146783593

Hey, Boars are animals, and so 'Beast Mastery' works on them.

It's the same as 'Master Enslave', except N6 instead of S8, 4 gems instead of 8, and Thaumaturgy 8 instead of Thuamaturgy 9.

Your point still holds, of course.

Still, this is my favourite thing about Dominions. If you take the time to VERY CAREFULLY read the spell list whenever your opponent appears to have an unbeatable strategy, you often find some weird obscure spell that is the perfect counter. It's often a spell that up until now you've passed over as being worthless.

A favourite for me was from a game in Dominions 3. I was EA Pangaea, fighting Agartha. Agartha attached with a massive, seemingly unstoppable army of golems and earth elementals that completely destroyed my squishy beastmen armies. I lost all my soldiers in a few catastrophic battles. I was completely stumped and couldn't think of a counter, so I sat down to read VERY CAREFULLY through the spell books. I realised I could have my Pan do Strength of Gaia, followed by Earth Power, followed by mass Shatter. Its an obscure combined usage of spells that only works for Pangaea, and only works if you're fighting constructs. Most of the time the combination would be worthless, but in this particular game it was lethal. I wiped out the army and eventually won on the counter attack.
>>
>>146784587
>I realised I could have my Pan do Strength of Gaia, followed by Earth Power, followed by mass Shatter.
Gaia empowers only nature magic in Dom4. Did it do both E and N in Dom 3?

Well, there's some fundamentals that you'd benifit from knowing. Much better. Now, temperature scales don't move more than 1 underwater (or 0 in deep sea), your fortune counts as missfortune in others provinces so spread the love about a bit more with dom, and your sacreds REALLY like the W boost to defenses due to berserk 3 (the cap ones that is)

How about inverting the income bonus, so death gets a bonus and growth gets an income malus? You'd probably need to increase the population growth to make up for the massive income nerf growth would get.

No idea how to justify it thematically, but that seems like it would give an actual reason to dump death/not take growth.

Usually I take some sort of bless with Arco, sometimes even double major blesses. However, sometimes just a mage bless, like E4, can help, and sometimes you'll have F4 or W4 or N5 just because that's what you built, so you might as well buff your wind riders. They are quite strong anyway, and I like to use them to take down elephants and H cav even without a bless. One time I even used them to stop white centaurs from trampling my shit.

As far as pelasts vs cardaces go, neither of them are very tough or deadly, but Cardaces have formation fighter, making them a little better at holding a line. However, I build both - cardaces to advance in a line, with pelasts behind to throw javelins and spill on either side of the line.

It is, standard Therodos play (for me at least) is to rush const 6 for quills then lanterns to capitalise on the philosophers.

It's not as though you have anything better to spend fire gems on most of the time, and lightless lanterns are probably the best research boosters in the game given how weak the horrormark effect is

Abysia is fairly strong as soon as it gets fireball and fire cloud up, but lose power later when enemies get counter spells, so rushing someone might be a better plan with Abysia specifically.

The reason is the amount of time lost by restarting with the offending player removed would be minimal.

If someone goes AI at turn 1 all you need to redo is the first turn, and you don't even need to do anything interesting there anyway.

People going AI at later turns also sucks, but you can't do anything about it by then.

You say dodging, I say luring.
>>
If possible, I need to speak to NoBully Agartha before the game snowballs even more in Abysia's favor.
>>
>>146917343
What's the game status
>>
>>146920335
Eh, it's pretty much between Mictlan and Abysia at this point I'd think, both have sort of spiraled out of control.

Mictlan is just from hearsay though, I haven't actually been able to interact with them much considering they're on the other side of the board, and my scouts typically get caught by patrols before reaching there.

Abysia apparently has enough air gems to toss some 40 away, empower a Fae Queen, and cast perpetual storm (I'm hoping with Pazuzu)
>>
>>146920583
>Abysia apparently has enough air gems to toss some 40 away, empower a Fae Queen, and cast perpetual storm
Well, what else is Abysia going to do with air gems?
>>
>>146921164
Oh, and cause a certain awoo asked, I forgot to mention that Abysia apparently has a site that lets them see all the graphs, which they've somewhat shared (i.e. hiding their own info)
Some intel work reveals, however, that their apparent claims of me being on top are total lies (except maybe in gems cause I'm an autist who uses the site search spells, sue me).

http://imgur.com/a/XTNSV
Only Abysia, myself, and Bogurus are shown. I feel having Mictlan on there might make it more complete, but I didn't really think of it at the time.
>>
>>146921993
>somewhat shared (i.e. hiding their own info)
That should be all the information needed to know they're lying about where they are.
>>
>>146922364
Well obviously. He's either on top, or only Mictlan is ahead of them, and the latter would only be a recent development due to Abysia accidently crippling Mictlan's enemies with Perpetual Storm.

I find it hilarious that Abysia's attempts to hinder devils of all things is what's most likely to cost him the game when Mictlan tears through him later with a literal bajillion puchis, though I might not get to see it.

>>
>>146924249
Pretty much. Both the mage and the troops are actually fantastic units, but it's just SO expensive.
>>
>>146924249
Not with summod.
>>
Not that dude but how do you most effectively convert pearls into combat power?
>>
>>146924934
Getting into high astral and casting Astral's powerful spells and globals.
>>
>>146925215
>casting Astral's powerful spells
That's basically rephrasing the question, mate. Like, what do I wish for? What other big astral spells do I cast? On the other end, what do I do with 60ish pearls to gain an edge in a close fight if I'm not in the 300 pearl + S9 range?

For stuff like water and earth there's lots of direct answers, but astral seems harder to figure out.
>>
>>146924934
3 Ways generally:
Ether Gate is only decent in summod. It's acceptable if you're gambling for a B random to break into blood, but hardly ideal. In the event that ALL the ether warriors strengths are being played to (enemy is using magic beings that lack magic weapons - see, Agartha) then they're a solid choice.
Golem thugs are the most common approach I see.
Alternatively, you can try to boost to high Astral for Wishing. I STRONGLY advise doing this on an immortal or a caster who can 1v1 doom horrors, because if people know you have a wish engine AC WILL come out.
>>
>>146925443
Will of fates, it's very powerful to have luck on everyone, anti-magic is always nice too
>>
>>146924249
Ether Lords are great if you want an astral mage for the higher level spells. The only other summon which gives something with astral is the Golem, which has much lower astral. Golems also cannot lead troops, so you can't use Gateway or Astral Travel.

While the price is high for just summoning an Ether Lord, you also get a bunch of Ether Warriors. They are amazing troops if you have magic scales, and still good so long as you don't have drain.

It's a poor spell for a nation with lots of recruitable astral magic, but I've found it quite valuable when breaking into astral as a death nation.

>>146924934
Astral is best used out of combat, in my experience. If possible, you should use it to make your strategic position better, rather than using it to directly win fights with summons/spells.

Mind Hunt any enemy raiding force without astral magic to kill enemy mobility and use Teleport/Gateway/Astral Travel to outmaneuver the enemy. Heavy use of both (as well as boosters for mages to cast them) can easily burn through a lot of pearls even with minimal combat use.

In combat, use astral battlefield enchantments and buffs. Antimagic and Will of the Fates are always good. Light of the North Star is amazing if you have many astral mages. Astral Tempest and Solar Brilliance can be useful if you think they'll do more damage to the enemy than you.

enough. The main key to winning though was that I predicted that Nazca would try to do exactly what they did in the last battle we fought. They caught me by surprise by having everything fly to my back and clobber my mages before they were ready to do anything.

This time I was waiting for them with my badass paladin prophet backed up by knights of the chalice and 24 swordsmen. In a straight up melee fight Nazca's flyers got absolutely flattened.

And of course Nazca still has no idea how to work their magic and kept spamming Fire Flies at my PD pikemen for the whole battle.

Why would I do that? We haven't even fought yet. Your apocalypses aren't as effective as you think, as well.
>>
>>146933553
You somehow lost a throne to R'yleh. I don't even. But I'm glad you're not throwing in the towel like so many others have. Especially Mictlan. Like, at least C'tis (and maybe Patala) fought it out at the meme level.

And the armageddons are more a slow burn, they don't do shit until around number 8-10. I've got to hold off on that crap cause of squishy immortals traversing lizard dom anyway.

You'd best hurry though, as C'tis can tell you, seiging a Lemuria that crossed the 2k ghosts in a fort meme several thousand ghosts back is not fun.

I just wish this game wasn't going to end in speed racing through stales no one is crazy enough to sub for.
>>
>>146934447
>You somehow lost a throne to R'yleh. I don't even.

It was the one in the water plane, which was a losing war from the get go. Rylie likes to shit on me, but the fact of the matter is Bats are just not made for swimming. Still, I managed to keep up the skirmishes to this late period of the game while fighting 2 other simultaneous wars, so I feel I did a well enough job.

Doesn't look like therodos is getting their turn in, but I'll give them until the turn goes through to sort their shit out.

If they stale I'll restart the game without them. Sorry if you had a good start, but I don't want a turn 1 AI or staler.

I'm pretty damn sure that all of my claims about your position were true. I didn't tell anyone you're on top in research - the opposite, actually; I mentioned you're a bit behind due to your mages being busy bloodhunting and murdering your neighbours. I didn't comment on your income (and why would I? it's turn 57, the amount of Gibbors you can recruit every turn doesn't really matter that much). What I did actually say - about your gem income being higher than that of nations with gemgens (some of which are also using sitesearch remotes - yes, that would be me) or your diversity summons (including multiple Ether Lords) - was 100% true.
Also, if you really do feel like making the graph complete, your Acashic Record should be sent to the certain awoo rather than Mictlan. You're underestimating him a lot.

>>146920583
I did not empower a single Fairy Queen, actually. No idea why would you think that. Had a pile of spare air gems thanks to Obscuro, that much is true, but spending them on bringing the fairy to A4 would be wasteful and unnecessary.

I didn't say it doesn't matter at all. I said it doesn't matter as much as gems income. Might've been bad wording on my part.

Hey guys, new to the game but a long time player of grand strategy, 4x, and turn-based general strategy.

I'm having a few noob difficulties, maybe you fine folk can help me out.

Just booted the game up and started as test match with a bunch of ai players. I can't find any trade or diplomacy options in the UI, can someone clarify where they are?

Also, where are the tech trees for non-magic related stuff, stuff for improving infrastructure, troop quality, civ management, etc? All I appear to be able to make is either spells of craft magic items.

Also, what do I need to do to unlock more build options, everything in my capital seems to have already been built to start off with!

>>

>>
>>146950389
Wouldn't count on it. It's still the lowest win percentage in EA.
>>
>>146950149
Dominions doesn't care too much about modeling mundane infrastructure. The whole game is played on the scale of a few years, anyway. The focus is much more heavily on army movement, combat scripting, and conquest than idle development- your active goal is to kill all the other pretenders, and turtling so you can research Improved Basket Weaving wouldn't be in service of that.

The magic system is really in depth though, and takes the place of most of those things. That's where you'll go to get better troops/commanders and options for countering or defending against what your opponents are up to.

Trade and diplomacy are done by talking to other players, just like usual. It is a multiplayer game, after all.
>>
>>146950459
>replying
You're new, aren't you?
>>
>>146950459
i think it was a meme calling Dominions shallow
>>
>>146950149
Your capital starts fully built out. It's basically your springboard into kicking the shit out of the independents around you and taking their land. Any other fortresses you build don't start with any of that stuff, though.
>>
>>146950419
Just give them a 45g recruit anywhere B1 mage and ozelotls, what could go wrong?
>>
>>146950510
>>146950516
Eh. Costs me, what, 2 minutes to try and be helpful? No good reason not to, we could always use more players.
>>
>>146950459
>Dominions doesn't care too much about modeling mundane infrastructure
You mean one of the most important aspects of virtually all strategy games that aren't, like, RTSes or something?

> idle development
What do you think all of these things contribute to?

> turtling so you can research Improved Basket Weaving wouldn't be in service of that
Tell that to all the Civ and Alpha Centauri players who have been around much longer than any Dominions players, I'm sure they'll be delighted to know they're playing strategy games wrong.

>The magic system is really in depth though, and takes the place of most of those things. That's where you'll go to get better troops/commanders and options for countering or defending against what your opponents are up to.
Oh, absolutely, it's so great compared to the rest of this barren piece of shit that you could basically scrap the "strategy" overworld, skip the foreplay, and just make matches a series of self-contained, pre-prepared battles with literally nothing lost.
>>
>>146950553
Not exactly related, but I always liked how MA Machaka's theme is basically 'sorcerers practicing dark magic' while the nation has no access to B and no real chance at D >2.
>>
>>146950676
>no good reason not to, we could always use more players
that's not a prospective new player though. if you want more players post battle screens on /v/ or lure people in when somebody asks 'what's a super hardcore game for super hardcore people like myself?'
>>
>>146950710
Yeah, I can see how them having blood magic would be thematic. There's comparatively few blood magic nations in MA so they'd probably get good use out of it, too. It's certainly more use than their fucking nature randoms.
