Pretty much this. For some reason, you don't get your tank stance until 40 (but your DPS stance comes in at 30), and you don't have any AOE DPS moves until 50 (and even that's a long recast once you get it). With that being said, PLD does get buffs every patch (it seems), and it's really the best MT in the game once you have your full complement of moves.

The reason for that is the exact same reason that Storm's Path and Impulse Drive haven't received new animations. It's also the same reason why LNC is stuck spamming Impulse Drive between Heavy Thrusts until 26, and the reason why PLD is stuck with one and a half combos until level FIFTY FUCKING FOUR.

I do play PLD occasionally for low level shit and don't see how hard it can be to keep aggro, a couple of flashes and tabbing through targets is more than enough to have aggro for days.

Though i can see why people complain about losing aggro, from sword oath to shield oath PLD gets nothing but defensive cooldowns while most dps classes get a huge boost to their dps so generating aggro needs some work at that stage.

Because when they were designing the ARR classes for level 50, at some point they decided that it would be a great idea to give one tank class a single mindless 1-2-3 combo so that players could "focus on playing the role" without having to think about their actual rotation. You could even argue that it was a good decision, as long as the game stayed at level 50 forever.

Unfortunately, it left PLD pretty much unable to keep up past level 50, or with new classes like DRK that pretty much just supercede PLD in tanking style.

Yes. The best part of being a high-end crafter isn't being able to make gil. It's that you never HAVE to make gil. I had a full set of 3-star specialists at the beginning of 3.2, and I have a full set of 4-star specialists ready for 3.4. At basically no point have I held more than 3-4m gil at a time, because there's no point.

Having a class with such a low skill ceiling in ARR was a pretty good equalizer between people who wanted to play casually or semi-casually and people who were into the game hardcore. The fight design and the class design in HW compared to ARR share a common issue, which is that since they've more or less designed the game from the ground up to be really straightforward (ie: All the fights follow a very rigid script and need to be fit the 2/4/2 Full Party setup; every class has exactly one correct rotation and is based around roughly the same GCD length), the only way that they can really expand on things is to add more of the same. Encounter design just has to have more and more densely-packed mechanics, and class design gets a bunch of new buttons that form into a more complex version of the one correct rotation.

It's not a sustainable model in the long run and it's arguably already breaking down in Heavensward (the skill gap between an average DF-quality player and a top-tier raider is MASSIVE compared to ARR). I wonder if they have a plan for how to address it moving forward, or if they've even really recognized it as an issue yet.

given that nidhogg seems to be scaled back slightly from sephirot, at least in what little i've experienced of both fights so far, so they may have learned they went a bit overboard with mechanics.

Given how incredibly rigid the game is, addressing this issue would require some changes on a fundamental level, one of which might be the addition of talent specs. Hell, the removal of the Cross-class 1.0 artifact and integration of shit like Provoke and Blood for Blood into the other classes would be a HUGE step in the right direction towards this.
I have a feeling that the reason jobs and classes have zero customization is because of the cross-class system that currently exists. Problem is, it offers absolutely no customization as there's always at least 3 cross-class skills that are necessary for each job to function at end-game. Imagine a WAR or DRK without Provoke.

If I were designing the 50-60 stuff I would have taken it as a chance to fix what people didn't like about the classes / what held them back compared to others, and added effects that enhanced your current spells with one big new spell at 60.

The dev team's been reducing the amount of mechanics present in Primals since Thordan, actually. Thordan is still the most complex EX Primal in the game and will likely never lose that title.
Sephirot was a lot easier but still buckets of fun, and I felt like it struck a nice balance in terms of mechanical complexity. Nidhogg on the other hand feels like it's structured almost identically to Twintania, right down to the "home stretch final phase", since Hatch/Liquid Hell and Fireball/Ahk Morn are the only mechanics present in the respective final phases.

Thordan IS a clusterfuck to be honest, but it all comes together in such a spectacular manner, and it just clicks perfectly when you actually understand the fight. The final phase is rapid-fire mechanic after mechanic, often with 2-3 happening concurrently, but it's just such a glorious thing to behold that you can't help but love it. It really is a 10/10 fight and I'm immensely sad that I missed the initial rush to clear it.

I don't know if Sephirot to Nidhogg is really an indication of anything in particular. I think the fact that Sephirot (one of the most difficult primal fights in the game) came after Thordan (also one of the most difficult primal fights in the game) created a sort of expectation in players that that was sort of the new baseline for Extreme primal difficulty, which makes it seem like they deliberately made Nidhogg EX easy. But I think that Thordan->Sephirot was just a coincidence, and Nidhogg was just going back to the 'ordinary' EX difficulty. It's sort of like if ARR had given you Titan EX all by itself in one patch, and then the next patch had Ramuh EX, but then they followed it up with Shiva or Leviathan.

Class design is sort of a tricky issue. On the one hand, you're not really wrong, and the classes definitely feel almost overwhelmingly 'busy' compared to what all the classes were like at level 50. On the other hand, though, once you're really into a class and you do know it inside and out, it's SO much more fun than it was at level 50, and it's honestly really difficult to go back to any 50-synced content, because it just feels so simplistic and basic in comparison. There are two competing ideas there, I think, one of which is "These classes shouldn't become so complex that a player of average skill is literally only doing 50-60% of their potential", and the other is "These classes should be complex enough that a truly excellent player should be able to distinguish themselves from one who's just 'good'". It doesn't seem like SE managed to nail the balance between those two ideas, but if I'm being honest I don't know that I could do a better job of it if I tried.

To clarify I only went to 22 because some friends told me "At least get Provoke on GLD, then you can tell that class to fuck off since you're a guy who likes WAR and DK more anyway", I just haven't switched yet because I want my damned mount.

I found it's handy to go until you can summon your chocobo, then just keep that shit up as often as you need, especially during FATE grinding. Makes life much easier once you get some skills on them.
